EN: On 3 September, both Le Champlain and MS
Deutschland were moored together in Antwerp. Due to a combination of
circumstances, both ships extended their stay in the city for separate reasons.
For MS Deutschland, it was her very last visit. The ship called at Antwerp
during her very last cruise for Phoenix Reisen.
Le Champlain
& Storm
NL: Het
EN: The luxury expedition cruise ship Le Champlain
docked at the cruise pontoon at Het Steen at a quarter to eight in the morning
on 2 September 2026. The French ship, operated by Ponant, visited Antwerp
during a 10-day cruise from Copenhagen in Denmark to London in England. En
route, it had already called at Warnemünde and Wismar in Germany. Via the Kiel
Canal, the ship set course for Amsterdam. The next stop was the small harbour
of Scheveningen, where the 131-metre-long ship can only just enter, despite its
limited size. From there, Le Champlain sailed up the river Scheldt towards
Antwerp.
NL: Het verblijf in
verwacht in Antwerpen.
EN: The stopover in Antwerp was scheduled between
08:00h and 18:30h, but it soon became apparent that departure would be a
problem. The following day, on 3 September, Le Champlain was due to arrive in
Ostend, but due to the forecast of gale-force winds along the coast, the
captain decided to extend the stopover in Antwerp and skip Ostend.
Normally, that would not have been a problem,
but on 3 September, the MS Deutschland, operated by Phoenix Reisen, was due to
arrive in Antwerp. Despite the forecast stormy winds, the ship was still
expected to sail up the Scheldt because the wind strength there was
considerably lower. It was only out on the North Sea that the wind was too
strong. Diverting the MS Deutschland to Zeebrugge was not an option due to the
wind.
Kaai Verhalen / Shifting Berth
Men
EN: To resolve the problem, discussions were held
with Le Champlain regarding the ship shifting berth – a maritime term for
moving a ship from one quay to another within the same port. At 06:30h on 3
September, the pilot came on board Le Champlain and the ship’s gangway was
raised halfway against the hull. At 06:45h, the mooring lines were cast off;
the ship swung round in front of the cruise pontoon and, with the gangway still
hanging from the ship’s side, headed south towards the city.
At Quay S10, not far from the Kennedy Tunnel,
the ship turned again and moored at 07:15h against a number of fenders that had
been specially provided for this unique manoeuvre. These fenders had been
installed the previous evening by ‘GS Ship Supply & Services’. It was the
very first time ever that an ocean-going cruise ship had moored at Quay S10.
All the other quays were occupied by the many river cruise ships that had
diverted to Antwerp due to low water levels on the Rhine and Danube. Le
Champlain handled the security for their ship at Quay S10 themselves, as it was
too difficult to arrange additional security at short notice.
MS Deutschland – Laatste cruise / Final Cruise
tegenhanger van ‘The Love Boat’. Tussen 1999 en 2015 werden er afleveringen aan
boord opgenomen.
In 2014 ging Peter Deilmann Reederei failliet.
EN: Shortly before 08:00h on 3 September, the MS
Deutschland, operated by the German cruise line Phoenix Reisen, arrived at the
cruise terminal. The ship turned around in front of the Steenplein, after which
it was moored to the cruise pontoon by Brabo’s boatmen.
The 175-metre-long MS Deutschland entered
service in 1998 for what was then Peter Deilmann Reederei. The ship is fully
furnished in the style of a 1920s Grand Hotel, featuring a blend of Classicism,
Art Nouveau and Art Deco. This interior design makes the ship unique in the
cruise industry. In Germany, the ship became famous as the filming location for
the popular television series ‘Das Traumschiff’, the German equivalent of ‘The
Love Boat’. Episodes were filmed on board between 1999 and 2015.
In 2014, Peter Deilmann Reederei went into liquidation. Since 2015, the ship has been operated annually from September to April as the MS World Odyssey by the American cruise line ‘Semester At Sea’. The ship sails for them as a floating university, undertaking world cruises with students on board. Since 2016, the ship has sailed for the rest of the year as the MS Deutschland for Phoenix Reisen. As a result, the ship changed its name twice a year.
NL: De Amerikaanse
Semester At Sea die de naam opnieuw in MS World Odyssey veranderde.
EN: However, the ship’s American owner has decided
not to renew the charter agreement with Phoenix Reisen, meaning that 2026 was
its final season as the ‘MS Deutschland’. It is currently unclear what will
happen to the ship, as it will still sail two cruises for Semester At Sea in
2027, but its future beyond that is uncertain.
The very last cruise of the MS Deutschland for
Phoenix Reisen took her to Antwerp. On 28 August, the ship set sail from
Bremerhaven in Germany. She then travelled via Portsmouth and Fowey in England
to Saint-Malo in France. From there, the ship headed straight for Antwerp.
Despite the strong winds at sea, the Scheldt was still safely navigable.
Upon arrival in Antwerp, the ship requested to
stay in the city for longer. According to the schedule, the ship was due to
dock in IJmuiden on 4 September, but due to an announced strike at the Svitser
tugboat company, MS Deutschland would not be able to enter the port. As a
solution, the original departure time of 18:00h was postponed to 23:00h.
Passengers were required to be back on board by 21:00h, but in the end the ship
did not leave Antwerp until 03:15h in the morning. As a result of this change,
Antwerp became the ship’s final port of call. Following its arrival in
Bremerhaven on 5 September, MS Deutschland was almost immediately handed over
to Semester At Sea, which renamed it MS World Odyssey. On 7 September at 18:00h,
the ship set sail from Bremerhaven once again with a new group of students on
board.
Phoenix-Vlootbijeenkomst / Phoenix Fleet Meeting
waarna MS Deutschland antwoordde.
EN: Along with MS Deutschland, Phoenix Reisen’s river cruise ships Alina and Asara were also in Antwerp on 3 September. At 17:00h, both river cruise ships departed from Antwerp at the same time. Passengers on all three ships were asked to come out onto the open decks to wave each other off.
The ships sailed past MS Deutschland one by one
and, in accordance with maritime custom, each sounded their ship’s horn three
times, after which MS Deutschland responded to each ship with three blasts on
its own ship’s horn. On board the ships, passengers and crew stood waving to
one another. From the bridge of MS Deutschland, large hands mounted on a pole
were used to greet the river cruise ships. On MS Asara, all the passengers on
the upper deck had opened a turquoise umbrella (Phoenix’s corporate colour) to
wave with.
At the same time as MS Alina and MS Asara, MS
Viking Kvasir from Viking River Cruises had also set sail. It took the
opportunity to join in and sounded its ship’s horn three times, to which MS
Deutschland replied.
Twee
zeecruises tegelijk / Two sea cruises simultaneously
Bridge voer.
EN: As a result of all these changes, two
ocean-going cruise ships were docked in Antwerp at the same time on 3
September. This was the first time this had happened since the opening of the
new cruise pontoon in 2021. A similar situation is unlikely to occur again, as
Antwerp is only willing (and able) to accommodate one sea cruise ship at a
time. With the current infrastructure, it is not possible to comply with the
international ISPS regulations for more than one ship.
It did, however, provide a rare opportunity to
take photographs of two cruise ships passing each other. Le Champlain sailed
past MS Deutschland at the cruise pontoon whilst departing at around 17:45h,
but the ships did not exchange greetings. The following day, Le Champlain ended
its cruise in London, after passing under the Tower Bridge.
