MS Magellan sluit cruiseseizoen 2016 af / MS Magellan closes cruise season 2016

NL: Het cruiseschip MS Magellan van de Britse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages lag op dinsdag 20 december 2016 opnieuw in Antwerpen aangemeerd. Na drie kerstcruises sloot het 222-meter lange schip het cruiseseizoen voor 2016 in de Scheldestad af.

EN: The cruise ship MS Magellan of the British company Cruise & Maritime Voyages was again docked in Antwerp on Tuesday December 20th 2016. After three Christmas cruises the 222-metres long ship ended the cruise season in the city.

NL: Wie de voorbije weken langs de Scheldekaaien is gekomen heeft haar denkelijk wel eens zien liggen. Het cruiseschip MS Magellan van de Britse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages lag sinds 8 december al drie keer in Antwerpen. Het 222-meter lange schip bezoekt Antwerpen tijdens verschillende kerstcruises waarbij specifiek havens worden bezocht voor de kerstmarkten. Die derde kerstcruise is voor Antwerpen ook ineens de laatste van het jaar. Net als vorig jaar mocht MS Magellan het cruiseseizoen in de stad afsluiten.

EN: People who have been near the quayside in the last weeks might have seen her. The cruise ship MS Magellan of the British company Cruise & Maritime Voyages has been docked three times in Antwerp since 8 December. The 222-metres long ship visited Antwerp during several Christmas cruises that visit ports specifically for their Christmas markets. This third Christmas cruise is also the last of the year for Antwerp. Just like last year MS Magellan had the honour to close the cruise season in the city.

Gevarieerd seizoen / Varied season

NL: Naast MS Magellan hebben natuurlijk nog vele andere cruiseschepen een bezoek gebracht aan de Scheldestad. Dit jaar meerden er 19 verschillende cruiseschepen aan bij de cruiseterminal aan het Zuiderterras en die waren goed voor een totaal van 22 cruiseaanlopen. De zeereuzen brachten samen iets meer dan 16.000 passagiers naar de stad.

Het seizoen startte dit jaar halfweg maart met de komst van de Balmoral van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Het appartementschip The World bezocht Antwerpen na vijf jaar ook opnieuw. De grootste bezoeker voor dit jaar was de MS Marina van de Amerikaanse luxerederij Oceania Cruises. Dat schip was één van zes ‘maiden calls’ of ‘eerste aanlopen’ voor 2016. Dat wil zeggen dat het de allereerste keer was dat het schip naar de stad kwam. In september kreeg dat stad zelfs drie maiden calls na elkaar: de Azamara Quest, het expeditiecruiseschip National Geographic Orion en de Artania.

EN: Apart from MS Magellan the city was of course visited by many other cruise ships. This year 19 different cruise ships docked at the cruise terminal and made a total of 22 cruise calls. The ships brought a little over 16.000 passengers to the city.

The season started mid-March with the arrival of MS Balmoral of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. The residential ship The World also visited Antwerp again after an absence 5 years. The largest visitor for this year was MS Marina of the American luxury cruise line Oceania Cruises. This ship was one of 6 maiden calls for 2016. During September the city accommodated three consecutive maiden calls: Azamara Quest, the expedition cruise ship National Geographic Orion and the Artania.

Goede vooruitzichten / Good prospects

NL: Voor volgend jaar ziet het er voor de cruiseschepen in Antwerpen veelbelovend uit. Momenteel hebben maarliefst 30 zeecruiseschepen al een bezoek aan de stad gepland en daar kunnen er nog steeds bijkomen. Dat is het hoogste aantal sinds 2011.

EN: The cruise season of Antwerp for next year looks very promising. At the moment not less than 30 sea cruise ships have planned a visit to the city and that number can still rise. This is the highest number since 2011.

Kerstcruises Magellan 2016 / Christmas cruises Magellan 2016

NL: Het cruiseseizoen van 2016 nadert zijn einde. Morgen komt MS Magellan opnieuw naar Antwerpen voor de eerste van drie kerstcruises. Het 222 meter lange schip zal morgenvroeg rond 07.00uur aankomen en vertrekt opnieuw om 18.00uur. Een week later, op 15 december, bezoekt het schip de stad opnieuw en vijf dagen later, op 20 december, zal Magellan het cruiseseizoen afsluiten.

EN: The cruise season of 2016 is nearing its end. Tomorrow MS Magellan will visit Antwerp again for the first of three Christmas cruises. Maiden Call National Geographic Orion in Antwerpen - Ship Visit/Scheepsbezoek

NL: Het kleine expeditiecruiseschip National Geographic Orion van de Amerikaanse rederij Lindblad Expeditions lag op vrijdag 9 september 2016 voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen. Neem een kijkje aan boord van het schip.

EN: The small expedition cruise ship National Geographic Orion of the American company Lindblad Expeditions was docked in Antwerp for the first time on 9 September 2016. Take a look on board the ship.

NL: Normaal gezien heeft een cruiseschip veel weg van een drijvend flatgebouw, maar dat was deze keer niet waar. Het kleine 103 meter lange expeditiecruiseschip National Geographic Orion lijkt meer op een jacht dan een cruiseschip. Het schip lag op vrijdag 9 september 2016 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen.

Het schip maakt deel uit van de vloot van de Amerikaanse rederij Lindblad Expeditions. Zij bieden cruises aan naar gebieden waar de grote cruiseschepen niet kunnen komen, zoals  bijvoorbeeld Antarctica, de Amazone en de Galapagoseilanden.  National Geographic Orion is momenteel op weg naar Antarctica en vaart ondertussen enkele Europese cruises. In België bezocht het schip naast Antwerpen ook nog Oostende, waar het op 10 september aanmeerde.

EN: Normally a cruise ship closely resembles a floating apartment block, but this time it didn't. The small 103 metres long expedition cruise ship National Geographic Orion looks more like a yacht than an actual cruise ship. It was docked in Antwerp for the first time on Friday 9 September 2016.

The ship is part of the fleet of the American company Lindblad Expeditions. They offer cruises to destinations where large cruise ships can't get to, like for example Antarctica, the Amazon and the Galapagos Islands.  National Geographic Orion is currently on its way to Antarctica and sails a few European cruises in the meantime. Apart from Antwerp the ship also visited Ostend in Belgium on 10 September.

National Geographic

NL: Op de boeg van de National Geographic Orion prijkt het bekende logo van het gelijknamige geografische genootschap National Geographic, maar toch varen de schepen voor Lindblad Expeditions. National Geographic heeft geen financiële interesse in de cruiserederij maar gebruikt ze voor het verspreiden van hun naam en tegelijkertijd is het een goede uitvalsbasis voor hun fotografen. Tijdens elke cruise is er, naast een fotograaf van Lindblad Expeditions, namelijk altijd een fotograaf van National Geographic aan boord.

Naast de professionele fotografen worden ook de passagiers aangespoord om foto's te maken op hun reis. Om iedereen een kans te geven om met professionele apparatuur te werken heeft het schip allerhande camera's, lenzen en verrekijkers aan boord die men kan lenen voor 24 uur. Al de foto's die gemaakt worden, worden tijdens de reis verzameld en daar worden uiteindelijk de beste uitgekozen.

EN: Although the bow of the National Geographic Orion displays the famous logo of the namesake geographical association the ships belong to Lindblad Expeditions. National Geographic has no financial interest in the cruise line but uses them to spread their name and at the same time it is a great operating base for their photographers. During every cruise there is, apart from a photographer of Lindblad Expeditions, always a National Geographic photographer on board.

Apart from the professional photographers the passengers are also spurred on to take photos during their voyage. To give everyone a chance to work with professional equipment the ship has all kinds of cameras, lenses and binoculars on board that the passengers can borrow for 24 hours. All the photos that are made are collected and the best ones are chosen from them.

Ruim, ongedwongen interieur/ Spacious, informal interior

NL: Het schip mag er langs de buitenkant dan heel compact uitzien, toch is er binnenin verbazend veel ruimte. Omdat de focus van de rederij ligt op het beleven van de natuur en cultuur is er geen entertainment aan boord. Wel is het schip goed voorzien op het geven van lezingen over de gebieden waarin ze zich bevinden. Die lezingen worden gehouden in een ruime lounge waar de passagiers ook kunnen genieten van het uitzicht en een drankje. Bovenaan in het schip bevindt zich een observation lounge met grote ramen. Hier ligt ook steeds een zeekaart die de passagiers kunnen bestuderen. Wat zeker in het oog springt aan boord zijn de foto's aan de muren. Heel het schip hangt namelijk vol met foto's van National Geographic fotografen. Ook in de ruime cabines is National Geographic niet ver weg. Elke cabine heeft namelijk haar eigen wereldatlas.

Het schip heeft ook altijd kajaks en zodiacs bij om de bestemmingen te verkennen. In warmere gebieden worden er ook duikuitrustingen aan boord genomen.

EN: The ship might look very compact from the outside but on the inside it is surprisingly spacious. Because the focus of the cruise line lies on experiencing the nature and culture there is no entertainment on board, but the ship is provided with everything to give in depth lectures about the region they are in. These lectures are held in a spacious lounge where the passengers can also enjoy the view and a drink. Higher in the vessel there is an observation lounge  with large windows. Here passengers can always find a sea chart that they can study. An eye catcher on board the vessel is the great amount of photos on the walls. All throughout the vessel you can find photos of National Geographic photographers and even in the cabins National Geographic isn't far away as every cabin has its own world atlas.

The ship also has kayaks and zodiacs on board to discover the destinations. In warmer waters they also take scuba diving gear on board.

Tall Ship Amerigo Vespucci in Antwerpen 2016

NL: De trots van de Italiaanse Marine, het zeilschip Amerigo Vespucci, lag begin september opnieuw enkele dagen in Antwerpen. Van 5 tot en met 8 september 2016 lag het schip afgemeerd aan de cruiseterminal aan het Zuiderterras. Doordat het schip goed aangekondigd was in de media kwamen duizenden mensen een kijkje nemen naar de imposante driemaster.

EN: The pride of the Italian Navy, the Tall Ship Amerigo Vespucci, once again visited Antwerp for a few days at the start of September. The ship was docked at the cruise terminal at the Zuiderterras from 5 until 8 September 2016. Because the ship was announced in all the media thousands of people came to take a look at the imposing three-master.

NL: Amerigo Vespucci werd in 1931 gebouwd in de Marine-Werft Castellammare di Stabia bij Napels als één van twee opleidingsschepen voor de Italiaanse Marine. Haar zusterschip 'Cristoforo Colombo' werd in 1928 gebouwd maar moest na de Tweede Wereldoorlog als compensatie aan Rusland gegeven worden. Daar werd het schip in 1963 verwoest door een brand.

Amerigo Vespucci werd genoemd naar de gelijknamige ontdekkingsreiziger. Aan de boeg hangt daarom ook een levensgroot gouden beeld van hem. Het schip heeft een lengte van 101 meter en is 15,5 meter breed. De masten reiken tot maarliefst 54 meter hoog en de 26 zeilen van het zeilschip hebben een totale oppervlakte van ca. 2600m². De maximale snelheid van het schip onder zeil is 10 knopen maar met haar motor kan de Amerigo Vespucci tot 12 knopen, of 22 km/u behalen. Het schip heeft plaats voor ca. 450 manschappen.

Het schip vertrok op donderdagochtend onder veel belangstelling uit Antwerpen. Na te hebben gedraaid voor het Zuiderterras koos het schip het ruime sop richting Brest in Frankrijk.

EN: Amerigo Vespucci was built in 1931 at the Marine-Werft Castellammare di Stabia near Napoli as one of two training ships for the Italian Navy. Her sister ship 'Cristoforo Colombo' was built in 1928 but was given to Russia as compensation after the Second World War. There the ship was destroyed by a fire in 1963.

Amerigo Vespucci was named after the namesake explorer. Because of that the bow sports a live-size golden statue of him. The ship has a length of 101 metres and is 15,5 metres wide. The masts reach 54 metres high and the 26 sails have a surface area of ca. 2600m². The maximal speed of the vessel under sail is 10 knots, but with her motor Amerigo Vespucci can reach 12 knots, or 22 km/h. The ship can accommodate ca. 450 crew members.

On Thursday morning Amerigo Vespucci left Antwerp amid great public interest. After having turned on the river the ship headed to sea, towards Brest in France.

Maiden Call Azamara Quest in Antwerpen - Scheepsbezoek/Ship Visit

NL: Het cruiseschip Azamara Quest van de Amerikaanse luxecruiserederij Azamara Club Cruises lag op 4 & 5 september 2016 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Neem een kijkje aan boord van dit drijvende luxehotel.

EN: The cruise ship Azamara Quest of the American luxury cruise line Azamara Club Cruises was docked in Antwerp for the first time on 4 & 5 September 2016. Take a look on board this floating luxury hotel.

NL: Na een afwezigheid van vier jaar meerde Azamara Club Cruises dit jaar opnieuw aan in Antwerpen. Dit keer stuurde de Amerikaanse luxecruiserederij hun schip Azamara Quest naar de stad. Het was de eerste keer dat het schip in de Scheldestad aanmeerde. Omdat de rederij haar focus legt op de bestemmingen plant het langere bezoeken in de verschillende havens. In Antwerpen bleef de Azamara Quest daarom van zondagmiddag 4, tot maandagnamiddag 5 september in de stad. Zo kregen de passagiers ook de kans om Antwerpen bij nacht te verkennen.

EN: After an absence of four years Azamara Club Cruises once again visited Antwerp. This time the American luxury cruise line sent their ship Azamara Quest to the city.  It was the first time the ship visited Antwerp. Because the focus of the company lies on the destination they plan longer stays in the ports they visited, therefore Azamara Quest was docked in Antwerp from Sunday the 4th, until Moday afternoon the 5th of September. This way the passengers get the opportunity to visit Antwerp by night.

Vernieuwd, klassiek interieur / Refurbished classical interior

NL: Azamara Club Cruises besliste in 2015 dat hun twee schepen een grondige opknapbeurt zouden krijgen. Azamara Quest werd daarom in april 2016 in het droogdok gestuurd en werd volledig omgebouwd. De focus lag daarbij vooral op het moderniseren van het interieur waarbij veel gebruik gemaakt werd van lichte kleuren. Maar daarnaast er werden ook enkele nieuwe suites toegevoegd.

Het schip is klassiek ingericht met donkere houtsoorten en beige en witte tinten. In de traphallen zijn overal zwarte smeedijzeren relingen te vinden met gouden accenten en klassieke of modernere kunstwerken. Het schip is ook ruim en heeft veel plaatsen waar de passagiers rustig kunnen zitten en kunnen genieten van het uitzicht of het live entertainment aan boord. Wie meer geïnteresseerd is in het dineren kan terecht in één van de vier restaurants aan boord. Er is ook een grote spa aan boord waar de passagiers een waaier aan behandelingen kunnen ondergaan.

Op het bovendek bevindt zich het zwembad met daar rond ligstoelen en een poolbar. Als we nog een dek hoger gaan, onder de mast, zijn er nog ligstoelen te vinden en ook een plaats om shuffleboard te spelen. Van hieruit heb je ook een mooi zicht over de voorsteven van het schip.

EN: In 2015 Azamara Club Cruises decided that both of their ships would be refurbished. Therefore Azamara Quest went into dry dock in April 2016 and was completely rebuilt. The refurbishment was to modernise the interior for which they used light colours. But apart from that they also added some new suites.

The ship's decor is classical with dark wood types and beige and white tones. In the staircases black wrought-iron rails with gold accents and classical or modern art works can be found. The ship is also spacious with many places for the passengers to sit and enjoy the view or the live entertainment on board. For those who are more interested in the dining experience there are four different restaurants. There is also a large spa on board where the passengers can find a whole range of treatments.

On the top deck you can find the swimming pool with the deck chairs around it and a poolbar. When we ago up another deck, below the mast, you can find another open area with deck chairs and a place to play shuffleboard. From here you also have a nice view of the bow of the ship.

Eén van acht identieke schepen / One of eight identical ships

NL: Azamara Quest werd in 2000 gebouwd als R7 voor Renaissance Cruises. Deze rederij liet op enkele jaren tijd 8 identieke cruiseschepen bouwen, maar niet veel later gingen ze failliet. De schepen werden daarna verdeeld onder andere cruiserederijen. Royal Caribbean Ltd, waar Azamara Club Cruises deel van uitmaakt, kocht in 2007 twee van de schepen en startte daarmee Azamara Cruises op, wat later zou veranderen naar Azamara Club Cruises. De 8 schepen mogen dan wel identiek zijn van layout toch heeft elke rederij door de jaren heen haar eigen accenten aan boord weten te leggen.

EN: Azamara Quest was built in 2000 as R7 for Renaissance Cruises. This company built 8 identical cruise ships in only a few years time, but not long after that they went bankrupt. After that the ships were spread out among several cruise lines. Royal Caribbean Ltd, where Azamara Club Cruises is part of, bought two of the ships in 2007 and started Azamara Cruises with them, which later would change to Azamara Club Cruises. The 8 ships might be identical but throughout the years each cruise line has laid its own accents on board the vessels.

Oceania's MS Marina & MS Insignia in Antwerpen 2016

NL: De Amerikaanse luxecruiserederij Oceania Cruises bezocht Antwerpen dit jaar met twee van hun schepen. Namelijk MS Insignia en MS Marina. Het was van 2010 geleden dat de rederij de stad nog had bezocht.

MS Marina draagt dit jaar de titel van het grootste schip van het seizoen. Met 238 meter en 66.000 Bruttoton (BRT) stak ze de Crystal Symphony voorbij die eveneens 238 meter lang is maar slechts 51.000 BRT groot is. MS Marina bezocht Antwerpen dit jaar twee keer en dat lokte telkens vele kijklustigen naar de kaaien om het imposante gevaarte van dichtbij te bekijken.

MS Marina werd in 2010 gebouwd bij de scheepswerf Fincantieri in Italië en was het eerste van twee identieke schepen die voor Oceania Cruises gebouwd werden. Twee jaar later kwam het zusterschip MS Riviera in de vaart.

EN: The American luxury cruise line Oceania Cruises visited Antwerp this year with two of their ships; MS Insignia and MS Marina. The last time the company visited the city was in 2010.

This year MS Marina holds the record of the largest ship of the season. With 238 metres and 66.000 Brutto tons (BRT) she surpassed Crystal Symphony, who is also 238 metres long but only has 51.000 BRT. MS Marina made two visits to Antwerp this year and both times the ship did not go unnoticed by the citizens. Hundreds of people came to see the imposing ship up-close.

MS Marina was built in 2010 at the shipyard Fincatieri in Italy and was the first of two identical sister ships built for Oceania Cruises. Two years later her sister ship MS Riviera was launched.

NL: Naast MS Marina bezocht op 8 augustus ook MS Insignia Antwerpen. Het 181 meter lange schip lag voor de tweede keer in de stad, na haar eerste aanloop in 2010. De Insignia werd in 1998 gebouwd als R1 voor het vroeger Renaissance Cruises. Het was het eerste van 8 identieke schepen. Nadat Renaissance Cruises failliet ging werden de schepen verdeeld onder verschillende rederijen. Vier van de acht schepen maken momenteel deel uit van de vloot van Oceania Cruises.
