van een goed seizoen. Het aantal aanlopen blijft ook voor 2023 stabiel.

With 20 calls, after two bad years, we can again speak of a good season. The
number of calls also remains stable for 2023.
NL: MS Bolette kwam op 24
oktober met vijf uur vertraging aan in Antwerpen. Door de sterke wind was het
niet mogelijk om het schip op de geplande tijd te beloodsen aan het
loodsstation Steenbank. Er werd uiteindelijk ook nog besloten om niet de vaarroute
via Zoutelande te nemen, maar om voor de bredere vaargeul te gaan, waardoor er
ook nog extra omgevaren moest worden.
Bij de aankomst in Antwerpen zorgde
de wind nog voor een spectaculair zwaaimanoeuvre, waarbij MS Bolette met behulp
van een sleepboot vlak voor de kaai aan het loodswezen zwaaide en daarna
achterwaarts naar het cruiseponton manoeuvreerde. Door de vertraagde aankomst liet
het tij het toe om te zwaaien tijdens de aankomst. Dit had als voordeel dat het
schip daardoor de volgende dag twee uur later kon vertrekken. Het was de derde
aanloop van het schip in 2022 en telkens werd er ook een overnachting geboekt.
EN: MS Bolette
arrived in Antwerp on 24 October with a five-hour delay. Due to strong winds,
it was not possible to pilot the ship at Steenbank pilot station at the
scheduled time. It was also eventually decided not to take the shipping route
via Zoutelande, but to go for the wider channel, which also required additional
detours.
On arrival in Antwerp, the wind
caused a spectacular swinging manoeuvre, with MS Bolette turning right in front
of the quay at the old pilot station with the help of a tugboat and then
manoeuvring backwards towards the cruise pontoon. Due to the delayed arrival,
the tide allowed it to turn during the arrival. This had the advantage of
allowing the ship to depart two hours later the next day. It was the ship's third call in 2022 and each time
an overnight stay was also booked.
Cruiseseizoen 2022 / Cruise Season 2022
NL: Na twee jaren
waarin zo goed als elke cruiseaanloop geannuleerd werd, lijkt de cruise-industrie
zich opnieuw wat te stabiliseren. Er wordt nog wel regelmatig geschoven met de
vaarschema’s van de schepen door corona-maatregelen. Hierdoor werden er doorheen
2022 nog 6 aanlopen geannuleerd, sommige daarvan al enkele weken nadat ze
aangekondigd werden, maar het merendeel van de reizen kon wel gewoon doorgaan
zoals gepland.
In totaal kreeg Antwerpen dit
jaar 20 zeecruiseaanlopen op bezoek. Die werden verdeeld onder 15 verschillende
schepen van 13 verschillende rederijen. Zeven schepen bezochten de Scheldestad
voor de eerste keer.

in which almost every cruise call was cancelled, the cruise industry seems to
be stabilising somewhat again. However, there is still regular shuffling of
ships' sailing schedules due to corona measures. As a result, 6 more calls were
cancelled through 2022, some of them just weeks after they were announced, but
the majority of the voyages were able to go ahead as planned.
In total, Antwerp received 20 sea
cruise calls this year. These were divided among 15 different ships from 13
different shipping companies. Seven ships visited the city for the first time.
Vooruitblik naar 2023 / Looking
ahead to 2023
NL: We kunnen ook
al een voorzichtige vooruitblik doen naar het seizoen van 2023. Er kunnen nog
steeds zaken veranderen, maar momenteel staan er 26 zeecruiseaanlopen gepland.
Waarvan 6 schepen hun maiden call, of eerste aanloop, zullen maken in
Antwerpen.
De opening van het cruiseseizoen
staat gepland op 10 februari 2023. Dan zal MS Spirit of Adventure van Saga
Cruises naar Antwerpen komen om te overnachten. Dat wordt ook ineens de eerste
maiden call van het seizoen. In april 2022 lag haar zusterschip MS Spirit of
Discovery ook al in de stad voor haar maiden call.
Twee verder blikvangers van het
seizoen zijn de aanlopen van ‘The World’, ’s werelds enige private residentieschip
en de aanloop van de prachtige ‘Sea Cloud Spirit’, ’s werelds nieuwste
zeilcruiseschip.

EN: We can also
already take a tentative look ahead to the 2023 season. Things may still
change, but currently 26 sea cruise calls are scheduled. Of which six ships
will make their maiden call, or first call, in Antwerp.
The opening of the cruise season
is scheduled for 10 February 2023. Then Saga Cruises' MS Spirit of Adventure
will come to Antwerp for an overnight call. That will also already be the first
maiden call of the season. In April 2022, her sister ship MS Spirit of
Discovery also visited the city for her maiden call.
Two further eye-catchers of the
season are the calls of 'The World', the world's only private residence ship
and the call of the magnificent 'Sea Cloud Spirit', the world's newest sailing
cruise ship.

MS AIDAaura van de Duitse rederij AIDA Cruises lag op 19 & 20 september
2022 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het is het zesde cruiseschip van
de rederij dat de stad een bezoek brengt en het eerste schip van AIDA dat
aanmeert aan de nieuwe cruiseterminal aan het Noorderterras. Oorspronkelijk
stond de eerste aanloop of ‘maiden call’ van AIDAaura gepland in oktober 2021,
maar dat werd door de coronapandemie uitgesteld tot nu.
EN: The cruise ship
MS AIDAaura of German company AIDA Cruises docked in Antwerp for the first time
on 19 & 20 September 2022. It is the cruise lin’s sixth cruise ship to
visit the city and the first AIDA-ship to dock at the new cruise terminal at
the Noorderterras. Originally, the first call or 'maiden call' of AIDAaura was
scheduled in October 2021, but it was postponed until now due to the corona
pandemic.

andere schepen van AIDA Cruises heeft de kleurrijke boegschildering van het
schip veel bekijks. Het ontwerp van de grote rode lippen en kleurrijke ogen op
boeg werd in 1996 bedacht door de Duitse theatergraficus Feliks Büttner voor de
bouw van de AIDAcara. AIDA Cruises, toen nog gekend onder de naam Deutsche
Seetouristik, was met deze beschildering de allereerste rederij die een
opvallende beschildering aanbracht op een cruiseschip. Tegenwoordig hebben
verschillende rederijen dit idee overgenomen. Enkele voorbeelden hiervan zijn
Norwegian Cruise Line en Princess Cruises.

other AIDA Cruises ships, the ship's colourful bow painting attracts a lot of
attention. The design of the large red lips and colourful eyes on bow was
conceived by German theatre graphic artist Feliks Büttner in 1996 for the
construction of the AIDAcara. With this painting, AIDA Cruises, then known as
Deutsche Seetouristik, was the very first shipping company to apply an
eye-catching painting to the outside a cruise ship. Today, several shipping
companies have adopted this idea. Some examples are Norwegian Cruise Line and
Princess Cruises.

Sea Cloud Spirit lag op 14 juni 2022 voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen voor een
kort bezoek. De luxueuze driemaster werd warm onthaald door een delegatie van

naar de stad.

ship Sea Cloud Spirit docked in Antwerp for the first time on 14 June 2022 for
a short visit. The luxurious three-master was warmly welcomed by a delegation

Spirit is zonder twijfel een buitenbeentje op de cruiselijst voor 2022. Het is
namelijk een traditioneel zeilschip dat werd uitgerust als cruiseschip. Zo
heeft het schip ook een Spa en een fitness aan boord. Bij een traditioneel
schip denkt men bijna direct aan een historisch schip, maar de Sea Cloud Spirit
werd pas eind september vorig jaar gedoopt en is daarmee het nieuwstee schip
van de Duitse rederij Sea Cloud Cruises.

Spirit is without a doubt an oddity on the cruise list for 2022. It is a
traditional sailing ship that has been equipped as a cruise ship. For example,
the ship has a spa and a fitness on board. When you think of a traditional
ship, you almost immediately think of a historic ship, but the Sea Cloud Spirit
was only christened at the end of September last year and is therefore the
newest ship of the German shipping company Sea Cloud Cruises.

Cruises lag voor het laatst in Antwerpen in 2010 met de Sea Cloud II. In 2020
en 2021 stonden er enkele aanlopen gepland maar die werden door de pandemie
geannuleerd. Nu is het eindelijk gelukt om de Sea Cloud Spirit te mogen
ontvangen, al vaart het schip momenteel wel maar op halve capaciteit omdat er
nog steeds strenge maatregelen zijn aan boord. Normaal gezien is er plaats voor
136 passagiers waarvoor 85 bemanningsleden klaarstaan. Tijdens haar aanloop in
Antwerpen was er dus meer bemanning aan boord dan passagiers.

Cruises last called at Antwerp in 2010 with the Sea Cloud II. In 2020 and 2021,
a few calls were planned but were cancelled due to the pandemic. Now Antwerp
has finally succeeded in receiving the Sea Cloud Spirit, although the ship is
currently sailing at half capacity because there are still strict measures on
board. Normally, there is room for 136 passengers for which 85 crew members are
at the ready. During her call at Antwerp, there were more crew members on board
than passengers.

veel kijklustigen naar het Noorderterras. De impressionante driemaster met een
hoogte van 57,7 meter was al van veraf te zien. Van dichtbij kon je het ingewikkelde
touwwerk bekijken en de gouden adelaar die aan de boegspriet prijkt.
Naast de
prachtige witte zeilen, die niet minder dan 4100m² groot zijn, heeft het schip
ook nog een gewone motor die gebruikt wordt op plaatsen waar het te gevaarlijk
is om de zeilen te hijsen, zoals tijdens de aankomst of het vertrek in een
haven. De schouw van het schip zit trouwens verborgen in de achterste mast, die
je hierdoor soms kan zien roken. De zeilen worden aan boord op de traditionele
manier met de hand gehesen. Er werd niets geautomatiseerd. Dat betekent ook dat
de bemanningsleden voor het hijsen van de grote zeilen in de masten moeten
klimmen om ze handmatig los te maken.
EN: The ship
attracted many spectators to the quayside. The impressive three-master with a
height of 57,7 metres could be seen from afar. Up close, you could see the
intricate rope work and the golden eagle adorning the bowsprit.
Apart from the
beautiful white sails, which are no less than 4100 square metres, the ship also
has an ordinary engine that is used in places where it is too dangerous to
hoist the sails, such as when arriving or departing from a port. The ship's chimney is hidden in the rear mast, which can sometimes be seen
smoking. The sails are hoisted on board in the traditional way by hand. Nothing
was automated. This also means that the crew members must climb the masts to
hoist the big sails and unhook them by hand.

bezoek aan de stad is de kapitein zeer goed bevallen en hij heeft laten weten
dat de Sea Cloud Spirit volgend jaar op 16 en 17 augustus 2023 terug naar
Antwerpen zal komen. Dan zal het schip ook blijven overnachten.

keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Door het zonnige weer had het schip veel bekijks

de Antwerpse binnenstad komt.

and 19 April. Due to the sunny weather, the ship had many spectators on the
quayside. It is the second largest ship to come to the city centre of Antwerp this
year.

Discovery van de Engelse rederij Saga Cruises kwam op Paasmaandag met veel
bekijks aan in de Antwerpse binnenstad. Het was de eerste keer dat het 236 meter
lange cruiseschip naar de Scheldestad kwam. Normaalgezien had het schip al in
december 2020 in Antwerpen gelegen maar daar stak het coronavirus een stokje
voor.
Het schip, dat in 2019 in de
Duitse scheepswerf Meyer Werft gebouwd werd, kan net geen 1000 passagiers aan
boord nemen. Binnenin herinnert het interieur van het schip aan de gouden tijd
van de trans-Atlantische Ocean Liners.
Het vertrek van het schip werd
met een paar uur verlaat waarna het schip op 19 april kort voor 19:00u haar trossen
losgooide en met behulp van twee sleepboten zwaaide voor het Zuiderterras. De
volgende aanloophaven is Dover in Engeland.

Discovery of the English company Saga Cruises arrived in the city centre of
Antwerp on Easter Monday to a great deal of interest. It was the first time
that the 236-metres long cruise ship came to the city of Antwerp. Normally, the
ship would have been in Antwerp in December 2020, but the coronavirus put a
stop to that.
The ship, which was built in the
German shipyard Meyer Werft in 2019, can take just under 1,000 passengers on
board. Inside, the interior of the ship recalls the golden age of the
transatlantic Ocean Liners.
The ship's departure was delayed
by a few hours, after which the ship cast off her mooring lines shortly before
19:00 on 19 April and, with the help of two tugboats, swung in front of the
Zuiderterras. The next port of call is Dover in England.
Coronamaatregelen & Minimumleeftijd / Corona Measures
& Minimum Age
NL: Vanwege het
coronavirus dat nog steeds de ronde doet zijn er aan boord van het schip ook
nog specifieke regels van kracht. In de loop van het voorbije jaar hanteerden
verschillende cruiserederijen, waaronder ook AIDA Cruises, de regel om in de
havens niet meer individueel van boord te gaan. De enige manier waarop de
passagiers de stad dan kunnen verkennen is met een geleide groep. De meeste rederijen
hebben die regel momenteel terug laten vallen, maar dat is nog niet het geval
bij Saga Cruises. De passagiers die in Antwerpen aankwamen moesten verplicht
deelnemen aan een rondleiding als ze iets van de stad zouden willen zien. Waarschijnlijk
zal die regel binnenkort ook bij Saga Cruises opgeheven worden.
Een mogelijk reden voor de
strengere coronamaatregelen aan boord is de gemiddelde leeftijd van de
passagiers. Saga Cruises heeft namelijk als concept dat je geen cruise mag
boeken bij hen als je jonger bent dan 50 jaar. Voor een partner die meegaat is
de minimumleeftijd 40 jaar. Saga Cruises is de enige cruiserederij die zo’n
drastische regels heeft. Rederijen die bijvoorbeeld kinderen weren aan boord komen
wel meer voor.
EN: Because of the
coronavirus that is still circulating, specific rules are also in force on
board the ship. Over the course of the past year, several cruise lines,
including AIDA Cruises, have adopted the rule of no longer disembarking
individually in ports. The only way passengers can then explore the city is
with a guided group. Most cruise lines have now dropped that rule, but that is
not yet the case with Saga Cruises. Passengers arriving in Antwerp were
required to participate in a guided tour if they wanted to see anything of the
city. This rule will probably soon be lifted at Saga Cruises as well.
A possible reason for the
stricter measures on board is the average age of the passengers. Saga Cruises
has the concept that you cannot book a cruise with them if you are younger than
50. For a partner accompanying you, the minimum age is 40. Saga Cruises is the
only cruise line that has such drastic rules. Cruise companies which, for
example, do not allow children on board are more common.

kwam op 8 april 2022 voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen. Het kleine
expeditiecruiseschip is het derde van drie bijna identieke schepen die gebouwd
werden voor de Duitse luxerederij Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. In 2019 lag het
zusterschip HANSEATIC Inspiration nog in de Scheldestad. Dat schip startte toen
haar allereerste reis, of maiden voyage, vanuit Antwerpen.
Door de compacte omvang van de
scheepsklasse is het ook mogelijk om er cruises mee te maken op de Great Lakes
in Noord-Amerika. Ze hebben elk ook een eigen vloot van zodiacs bij waarmee op
de meest afgelegen plaatsen kunnen geraken, zoals de kleine zijrivieren van de
Amazone.

Spirit arrived in Antwerp for the first time on April 8, 2022. The small
expedition cruise ship is the third of three nearly identical vessels built for
the German luxury company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. In 2019, the sister ship
HANSEATIC Inspiration also visited Antwerp. That ship then started its very
first voyage, or maiden voyage, from the city.
Because of the compact size of
the ship class, it is also possible to sail cruises on the Great Lakes in North
America. They also each have their own fleet of zodiacs with which they can get
to the most remote places, such as the small tributaries of the Amazon.
Maiden Call Ceremony
NL: Wanneer een
cruiseschip voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komt worden er steeds geschenken
overhandigd aan de kapitein. Normaal gezien gebeurt dit steeds aan boord van
het schip, maar door de coronamaatregelen, die aan boord van de cruiseschepen
nog wel meer van kracht zijn dan aan land, vond de ceremonie nu plaats aan de loopbrug
van het schip op het cruiseponton. Een delegatie van de Stadshaven, het
Schepenkabinet van Antwerpen en de Douane verwelkomden de kapitein in Antwerpen
en overhandigden hem de officiële ‘plaque’ met daarop de naam van het schip en
de datum van het bezoek. Daarnaast kreeg hij ook nog een boek over Antwerpen en
natuurlijk mocht een doos Belgische chocolade ook niet ontbreken.
Als alles gaat zoals gepland
zullen er dit jaar nog minstens 6 andere maiden call ceremonies plaatsvinden in
Antwerpen.
EN: When a cruise
ship comes to Antwerp for the first time, gifts are always presented to the
captain. Normally this happens on board the ship, but because of the Covid
regulations, which are estill more present on board cruise ships than on land,
the ceremony now took place in front of the ship's gangway on the cruise
pontoon. A delegation from the City Port, the Antwerp City Council and Customs
welcomed the captain in Antwerp and presented him with the official 'plaque'
bearing the name of the ship and the date of the visit. He also received a book
about Antwerp and of course a box of Belgian chocolates.
If all goes as planned there will
be at least 6 more maiden call ceremonies in Antwerp this year.

March. The ship had the honour of inaugurating the new cruise terminal. It was
the first of 23 sea cruise calls in Antwerp for 2022.
NL: In 2021 werd
het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras al officieel in gebruik genomen. Nu is
ook de nieuwe cruiseterminal volledig operationeel. De terminal bevindt zich
onderin de nieuwe aanbouw van het middeleeuws fort Het Steen. Momenteel is de
verbinding tussen de cruiseterminal en het cruiseponton met tijdelijke hekken
omheind. Binnenkort zullen er in de plaats daarvan vaste hekken geïnstalleerd
worden. Die zullen zo geïnstalleerd worden dat de doorgang over de lengte van
de kaaien geopend zal zijn als de terminal niet in gebruik is.
MS Bolette van de Engelse rederij
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines mocht als eerste zeecruiseschip gebruik maken van de
nieuwe terminal. Het is het grootste cruiseschip dat dit jaar naar Antwerpen
komt. Met haar 1300 passagiers was het ook ineens een goede stresstest om te
zien hoe de afhandeling van een groot schip in de nieuwe terminal gebeurt.
EN: In 2021, the
cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras was already officially put into use. Now,
the new cruise terminal is also fully operational. The terminal is located at
the bottom of the new extension of the medieval fort Het Steen. At the moment,
the connection between the cruise terminal and the cruise pontoon is fenced off
with temporary fences, but soon, permanent fences will be installed. They will

MS Bolette of the English company
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is the first sea cruise ship to use the new terminal.
It is also the largest cruise ship to visit Antwerp this year. With its 1.300
passengers, it was also a good stress test to see how the handling of a large
ship in the new terminal is done.
NL: Als alles
volgens plan verloopt zullen er in 2022 in totaal 23 zeecruises aanmeren in
Antwerpen, goed voor bijna 18.000 passagiers. MS Bolette zal zelf 4 van de aanlopen
voor haar rekening nemen en zal dus nog 3 keer terugkomen dit jaar. Ook zullen er
maar liefst 8 zeecruiseschepen voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komen.
Ook de riviercruiseschepen zijn
dit jaar weer goed vertegenwoordigd met niet minder dan 626 verwachte aanlopen.
In totaal zullen ze 105.000 toeristen naar Antwerpen brengen. De schepen zullen,
als de capaciteit er zich toe leent ook kunnen aanmeren aan het nieuwe
cruiseponton. Zoals altijd wordt ook het Kattendijkdok nog steeds gebruikt als
aanlegplaats.

NL: Het splinternieuwe
onderzoekschip Belgica lag op 15 en 16 maart 2022 voor de eerste keer
aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het schip is het drijvende laboratorium van Het Koninklijk
Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen. RV Belgica zal jaarlijks naar Antwerpen
komen om de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde te testen.

research vessel Belgica was docked in Antwerp for the first time on 15 and 16
March 2022. The ship is the floating laboratory of The Royal Institute of
Natural Sciences. RV Belgica will come to Antwerp annually to test the water
quality of the Scheldt.

onderzoekschip van de Belgische Marine bracht op 15 en 16 maart 2023 voor de
eerste keer een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het schip vervangt de oude Belgica (A962)
die van 1984 tot en met 2021 actief was. Door de ouderdom en de beperkte

EN: The Belgian
Navy's new research ship paid its first visit to Antwerp on 15 and 16 March
2023. The ship replaces the old Belgica (A962), which operated from 1984 to
2021. Due to its age and limited size, it no longer met today's requirements of
a fully equipped research vessel. The ship was therefore sold and has since
been put to sea again as a research vessel in Ukraine.
Diepgaand onderzoek / In-depth research
NL:RV Belgica is
met haar 71,4 meter lengte en 16,8 meter breedte veel groter dan haar
voorganger. Dat biedt veel meer mogelijkheden voor onderzoek. Zo zal het schip dieper
kunnen ingaan op thema’s waar haar voorganger ook onderzoek naar deed. Zo zal
het schip ingezet worden om de waterkwaliteit na te gaan en de ecologie in de
zee en Schelde. Ook de impact van de mens op het milieu met betrekking tot de
windmolens op zee en de zandwinning wordt onderzocht. Een nieuwigheid op dit
schip is dat het een volledige waterkolom kan analyseren, inclusief fauna, tot
op een diepte van maar liefst 5000 meter. Het is ook mogelijk om de bodem in
kaart te brengen.
EN: At 71.4 metres
long and 16.8 metres wide, RV Belgica is much larger than its predecessor. This
offers many more opportunities for research. For instance, the ship will be able to go deeper into themes that her
predecessor also researched. The ship will be used to investigate water quality

Antwerpen ging gepaard met een onderzoek van de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde.
Hiervoor zijn er een dertigtal wetenschappers aan boord, alsook verschillende
studenten. Het is de bedoeling dat de Belgica elk jaar naar Antwerpen zal komen
om de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde na te kijken. Zo kan de evolutie van het
water over de verschillende jaren onderzocht worden.
Het vaargebied van de Belgica
beperkt zich echter niet enkel tot de Schelde en de Noordzee. Het is de bedoeling
dat het schip ook expedities zal varen naar noordoostelijke Atlantische Oceaan,
de Middellandse Zee en de Zwarte Zee. Ook reizen naar de Arctische wateren zijn
tijdens de zomer mogelijk doordat het schip gebouwd werd met ijsklasse 1A.
EN: The visit to
Antwerp was accompanied by a study of the water quality of the Scheldt. About 30 scientists are on board for this,
as well as several students. The intention is that the Belgica will come
to Antwerp every year to check the water quality of the Scheldt. In this way,
the evolution of the water over the different years can be examined.
However, the Belgica's sailing
area is not limited to the river Scheldt and the North Sea. It is planned that the ship will also sail
expeditions to the north-east Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Voyages

Gevarieerd seizoen / Varied season

gepland staat zullen er in 2022 maar liefst 16 verschillende zeecruiseschepen
naar Antwerpen komen. Een aantal schepen daarvan lagen de voorbije jaren al in
Antwerpen, maar er staan ook 7 ‘maiden calls’ gepland, of schepen die voor de
eerste keer naar de stad zullen komen. Enkele van die schepen stonden gepland
om de voorbije twee jaar langs te komen, maar werden toen geannuleerd door het
coronavirus.
De eerste maiden call staat
gepland op 8 april met Hanseatic Spirit. Dat is het zusterschip van MS
Hanseatic Inspiration die in 2019 haar allereerste reis startte in Antwerpen.
Tegen het einde van april zullen
er nog 3 schepen voor de eerste keer langskomen. Op Paasmaandag zal MS Spirit
of Discovery van Saga Cruises langskomen voor een overnight call. Het 236 meter
lange schip werd pas in 2019 gebouwd. Op 26 en 29 april zullen respectievelijk
Le Champlain van Ponant en MS Deutschland van Phoenix Reisen voor het eerst
langskomen. Voor MS Deutschland is het de eerste keer dat ze onder de vlag van
Phoenix Reisen naar Antwerpen komt. Vroeger is het schip hier al wel geweest
voor Peter Deilmann Reederei.
EN: As things
stand, no fewer than 16 different sea cruise ships will be coming to Antwerp in
2022. A number of these ships have already been in Antwerp in recent years, but
there are also 7 'maiden calls' planned, or ships that will come to the city
for the first time. Some of these ships were scheduled to visit in the past two
years, but were then cancelled due to the coronavirus.
The first maiden call is
scheduled for 8 April with Hanseatic Spirit. That is the sister ship of MS
Hanseatic Inspiration that started her very first voyage in Antwerp in 2019.
Towards the end of April, three
more ships will visit for the first time. On Easter Monday, MS Spirit of
Discovery from Saga Cruises will stop by for an overnight call. The 236-metre
ship was only built in 2019. On 26 and 29 April, respectively, Ponant's Le
Champlain and Phoenix Reisen's MS Deutschland will call for the first time. For
MS Deutschland it is the first time she comes to Antwerp under the flag of
Phoenix Reisen. In the past the ship has been here for Peter Deilmann Reederei.

Midden september krijgen we nog
eens zoek van AIDA Cruises. Dit keer zal AIDAaura voor een overnight call naar
Antwerpen komen. Anderhalve week later zal ze ook nog eens terugkomen.
Momenteel staat het gepland dat
het cruiseseizoen afgesloten zal worden door twee aanlopen van MS Ambience van
Ambassador Cruise Line. Die rederij is de herrijzenis van het failliet Cruise
& Maritime Voyages. Het is wel nog niet volledig zeker of de twee aanlopen
zullen plaatsvinden.
Hou er ook rekening mee dat
verschillende rederijen door de coronacrisis nog niet op volle capaciteit varen
waardoor hun cruises regelmatig opnieuw gepland worden. Dit kan natuurlijk ook
impact hebben op de geplande aanlopen in Antwerpen. Voor de laatste informatie

EN: On 14 June, the
sailing cruise ship Sea Cloud Spirit will come to Antwerp for the first time.

NL: MS Bolette kwam op 24
oktober met vijf uur vertraging aan in Antwerpen. Door de sterke wind was het
niet mogelijk om het schip op de geplande tijd te beloodsen aan het
loodsstation Steenbank. Er werd uiteindelijk ook nog besloten om niet de vaarroute
via Zoutelande te nemen, maar om voor de bredere vaargeul te gaan, waardoor er
ook nog extra omgevaren moest worden.
Bij de aankomst in Antwerpen zorgde
de wind nog voor een spectaculair zwaaimanoeuvre, waarbij MS Bolette met behulp
van een sleepboot vlak voor de kaai aan het loodswezen zwaaide en daarna
achterwaarts naar het cruiseponton manoeuvreerde. Door de vertraagde aankomst liet
het tij het toe om te zwaaien tijdens de aankomst. Dit had als voordeel dat het
schip daardoor de volgende dag twee uur later kon vertrekken. Het was de derde
aanloop van het schip in 2022 en telkens werd er ook een overnachting geboekt.
EN: MS Bolette
arrived in Antwerp on 24 October with a five-hour delay. Due to strong winds,
it was not possible to pilot the ship at Steenbank pilot station at the
scheduled time. It was also eventually decided not to take the shipping route
via Zoutelande, but to go for the wider channel, which also required additional
detours.
On arrival in Antwerp, the wind
caused a spectacular swinging manoeuvre, with MS Bolette turning right in front
of the quay at the old pilot station with the help of a tugboat and then
manoeuvring backwards towards the cruise pontoon. Due to the delayed arrival,
the tide allowed it to turn during the arrival. This had the advantage of
allowing the ship to depart two hours later the next day. It was the ship's third call in 2022 and each time
an overnight stay was also booked.

NL: Na twee jaren
waarin zo goed als elke cruiseaanloop geannuleerd werd, lijkt de cruise-industrie
zich opnieuw wat te stabiliseren. Er wordt nog wel regelmatig geschoven met de
vaarschema’s van de schepen door corona-maatregelen. Hierdoor werden er doorheen
2022 nog 6 aanlopen geannuleerd, sommige daarvan al enkele weken nadat ze
aangekondigd werden, maar het merendeel van de reizen kon wel gewoon doorgaan
zoals gepland.
In totaal kreeg Antwerpen dit
jaar 20 zeecruiseaanlopen op bezoek. Die werden verdeeld onder 15 verschillende
schepen van 13 verschillende rederijen. Zeven schepen bezochten de Scheldestad
voor de eerste keer.

in which almost every cruise call was cancelled, the cruise industry seems to
be stabilising somewhat again. However, there is still regular shuffling of
ships' sailing schedules due to corona measures. As a result, 6 more calls were
cancelled through 2022, some of them just weeks after they were announced, but
the majority of the voyages were able to go ahead as planned.
In total, Antwerp received 20 sea
cruise calls this year. These were divided among 15 different ships from 13
different shipping companies. Seven ships visited the city for the first time.

ahead to 2023
NL: We kunnen ook
al een voorzichtige vooruitblik doen naar het seizoen van 2023. Er kunnen nog
steeds zaken veranderen, maar momenteel staan er 26 zeecruiseaanlopen gepland.
Waarvan 6 schepen hun maiden call, of eerste aanloop, zullen maken in
Antwerpen.
De opening van het cruiseseizoen
staat gepland op 10 februari 2023. Dan zal MS Spirit of Adventure van Saga
Cruises naar Antwerpen komen om te overnachten. Dat wordt ook ineens de eerste
maiden call van het seizoen. In april 2022 lag haar zusterschip MS Spirit of
Discovery ook al in de stad voor haar maiden call.
Twee verder blikvangers van het
seizoen zijn de aanlopen van ‘The World’, ’s werelds enige private residentieschip
en de aanloop van de prachtige ‘Sea Cloud Spirit’, ’s werelds nieuwste
zeilcruiseschip.

2022 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het is het zesde cruiseschip van
de rederij dat de stad een bezoek brengt en het eerste schip van AIDA dat
aanmeert aan de nieuwe cruiseterminal aan het Noorderterras. Oorspronkelijk
stond de eerste aanloop of ‘maiden call’ van AIDAaura gepland in oktober 2021,
maar dat werd door de coronapandemie uitgesteld tot nu.

MS AIDAaura of German company AIDA Cruises docked in Antwerp for the first time
on 19 & 20 September 2022. It is the cruise lin’s sixth cruise ship to
visit the city and the first AIDA-ship to dock at the new cruise terminal at
the Noorderterras. Originally, the first call or 'maiden call' of AIDAaura was
scheduled in October 2021, but it was postponed until now due to the corona
pandemic.

other AIDA Cruises ships, the ship's colourful bow painting attracts a lot of
attention. The design of the large red lips and colourful eyes on bow was
conceived by German theatre graphic artist Feliks Büttner in 1996 for the
construction of the AIDAcara. With this painting, AIDA Cruises, then known as
Deutsche Seetouristik, was the very first shipping company to apply an
eye-catching painting to the outside a cruise ship. Today, several shipping
companies have adopted this idea. Some examples are Norwegian Cruise Line and
Princess Cruises.

schip denkt men bijna direct aan een historisch schip, maar de Sea Cloud Spirit
werd pas eind september vorig jaar gedoopt en is daarmee het nieuwstee schip
van de Duitse rederij Sea Cloud Cruises.
EN: Sea Cloud
Spirit is without a doubt an oddity on the cruise list for 2022. It is a
traditional sailing ship that has been equipped as a cruise ship. For example,
the ship has a spa and a fitness on board. When you think of a traditional
ship, you almost immediately think of a historic ship, but the Sea Cloud Spirit
was only christened at the end of September last year and is therefore the
newest ship of the German shipping company Sea Cloud Cruises.
NL: Sea Cloud
Cruises lag voor het laatst in Antwerpen in 2010 met de Sea Cloud II. In 2020
en 2021 stonden er enkele aanlopen gepland maar die werden door de pandemie
geannuleerd. Nu is het eindelijk gelukt om de Sea Cloud Spirit te mogen
ontvangen, al vaart het schip momenteel wel maar op halve capaciteit omdat er
nog steeds strenge maatregelen zijn aan boord. Normaal gezien is er plaats voor
136 passagiers waarvoor 85 bemanningsleden klaarstaan. Tijdens haar aanloop in
Antwerpen was er dus meer bemanning aan boord dan passagiers.
EN: Sea Cloud
Cruises last called at Antwerp in 2010 with the Sea Cloud II. In 2020 and 2021,
a few calls were planned but were cancelled due to the pandemic. Now Antwerp
has finally succeeded in receiving the Sea Cloud Spirit, although the ship is
currently sailing at half capacity because there are still strict measures on
board. Normally, there is room for 136 passengers for which 85 crew members are
at the ready. During her call at Antwerp, there were more crew members on board
than passengers.

veel kijklustigen naar het Noorderterras. De impressionante driemaster met een
hoogte van 57,7 meter was al van veraf te zien. Van dichtbij kon je het ingewikkelde
touwwerk bekijken en de gouden adelaar die aan de boegspriet prijkt.
Naast de
prachtige witte zeilen, die niet minder dan 4100m² groot zijn, heeft het schip
ook nog een gewone motor die gebruikt wordt op plaatsen waar het te gevaarlijk
is om de zeilen te hijsen, zoals tijdens de aankomst of het vertrek in een
haven. De schouw van het schip zit trouwens verborgen in de achterste mast, die
je hierdoor soms kan zien roken. De zeilen worden aan boord op de traditionele
manier met de hand gehesen. Er werd niets geautomatiseerd. Dat betekent ook dat
de bemanningsleden voor het hijsen van de grote zeilen in de masten moeten
klimmen om ze handmatig los te maken.
EN: The ship
attracted many spectators to the quayside. The impressive three-master with a
height of 57,7 metres could be seen from afar. Up close, you could see the
intricate rope work and the golden eagle adorning the bowsprit.
Apart from the
beautiful white sails, which are no less than 4100 square metres, the ship also
has an ordinary engine that is used in places where it is too dangerous to
hoist the sails, such as when arriving or departing from a port. The ship's chimney is hidden in the rear mast, which can sometimes be seen
smoking. The sails are hoisted on board in the traditional way by hand. Nothing
was automated. This also means that the crew members must climb the masts to
hoist the big sails and unhook them by hand.

bezoek aan de stad is de kapitein zeer goed bevallen en hij heeft laten weten
dat de Sea Cloud Spirit volgend jaar op 16 en 17 augustus 2023 terug naar
Antwerpen zal komen. Dan zal het schip ook blijven overnachten.

Coronamaatregelen & Minimumleeftijd / Corona Measures
& Minimum Age
NL: Vanwege het
coronavirus dat nog steeds de ronde doet zijn er aan boord van het schip ook
nog specifieke regels van kracht. In de loop van het voorbije jaar hanteerden
verschillende cruiserederijen, waaronder ook AIDA Cruises, de regel om in de
havens niet meer individueel van boord te gaan. De enige manier waarop de
passagiers de stad dan kunnen verkennen is met een geleide groep. De meeste rederijen
hebben die regel momenteel terug laten vallen, maar dat is nog niet het geval
bij Saga Cruises. De passagiers die in Antwerpen aankwamen moesten verplicht
deelnemen aan een rondleiding als ze iets van de stad zouden willen zien. Waarschijnlijk
zal die regel binnenkort ook bij Saga Cruises opgeheven worden.
Een mogelijk reden voor de
strengere coronamaatregelen aan boord is de gemiddelde leeftijd van de
passagiers. Saga Cruises heeft namelijk als concept dat je geen cruise mag

coronavirus that is still circulating, specific rules are also in force on
board the ship. Over the course of the past year, several cruise lines,
including AIDA Cruises, have adopted the rule of no longer disembarking
individually in ports. The only way passengers can then explore the city is
with a guided group. Most cruise lines have now dropped that rule, but that is
not yet the case with Saga Cruises. Passengers arriving in Antwerp were
required to participate in a guided tour if they wanted to see anything of the

A possible reason for the
stricter measures on board is the average age of the passengers. Saga Cruises
has the concept that you cannot book a cruise with them if you are younger than
50. For a partner accompanying you, the minimum age is 40. Saga Cruises is the
only cruise line that has such drastic rules. Cruise companies which, for
example, do not allow children on board are more common.

haar allereerste reis, of maiden voyage, vanuit Antwerpen.
Door de compacte omvang van de
scheepsklasse is het ook mogelijk om er cruises mee te maken op de Great Lakes
in Noord-Amerika. Ze hebben elk ook een eigen vloot van zodiacs bij waarmee op
de meest afgelegen plaatsen kunnen geraken, zoals de kleine zijrivieren van de
Amazone.

Spirit arrived in Antwerp for the first time on April 8, 2022. The small
expedition cruise ship is the third of three nearly identical vessels built for
the German luxury company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. In 2019, the sister ship
HANSEATIC Inspiration also visited Antwerp. That ship then started its very
first voyage, or maiden voyage, from the city.
Because of the compact size of
the ship class, it is also possible to sail cruises on the Great Lakes in North
America. They also each have their own fleet of zodiacs with which they can get
to the most remote places, such as the small tributaries of the Amazon.
Maiden Call Ceremony
NL: Wanneer een
cruiseschip voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komt worden er steeds geschenken
overhandigd aan de kapitein. Normaal gezien gebeurt dit steeds aan boord van
het schip, maar door de coronamaatregelen, die aan boord van de cruiseschepen
nog wel meer van kracht zijn dan aan land, vond de ceremonie nu plaats aan de loopbrug
van het schip op het cruiseponton. Een delegatie van de Stadshaven, het
Schepenkabinet van Antwerpen en de Douane verwelkomden de kapitein in Antwerpen
en overhandigden hem de officiële ‘plaque’ met daarop de naam van het schip en
de datum van het bezoek. Daarnaast kreeg hij ook nog een boek over Antwerpen en
natuurlijk mocht een doos Belgische chocolade ook niet ontbreken.
Als alles gaat zoals gepland
zullen er dit jaar nog minstens 6 andere maiden call ceremonies plaatsvinden in
Antwerpen.
EN: When a cruise
ship comes to Antwerp for the first time, gifts are always presented to the
captain. Normally this happens on board the ship, but because of the Covid
regulations, which are estill more present on board cruise ships than on land,
the ceremony now took place in front of the ship's gangway on the cruise
pontoon. A delegation from the City Port, the Antwerp City Council and Customs
welcomed the captain in Antwerp and presented him with the official 'plaque'
bearing the name of the ship and the date of the visit. He also received a book
about Antwerp and of course a box of Belgian chocolates.
If all goes as planned there will
be at least 6 more maiden call ceremonies in Antwerp this year.

March. The ship had the honour of inaugurating the new cruise terminal. It was
the first of 23 sea cruise calls in Antwerp for 2022.
NL: In 2021 werd
het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras al officieel in gebruik genomen. Nu is
ook de nieuwe cruiseterminal volledig operationeel. De terminal bevindt zich
onderin de nieuwe aanbouw van het middeleeuws fort Het Steen. Momenteel is de
verbinding tussen de cruiseterminal en het cruiseponton met tijdelijke hekken
omheind. Binnenkort zullen er in de plaats daarvan vaste hekken geïnstalleerd
worden. Die zullen zo geïnstalleerd worden dat de doorgang over de lengte van
de kaaien geopend zal zijn als de terminal niet in gebruik is.
MS Bolette van de Engelse rederij
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines mocht als eerste zeecruiseschip gebruik maken van de
nieuwe terminal. Het is het grootste cruiseschip dat dit jaar naar Antwerpen
komt. Met haar 1300 passagiers was het ook ineens een goede stresstest om te
zien hoe de afhandeling van een groot schip in de nieuwe terminal gebeurt.

cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras was already officially put into use. Now,
the new cruise terminal is also fully operational. The terminal is located at
the bottom of the new extension of the medieval fort Het Steen. At the moment,
the connection between the cruise terminal and the cruise pontoon is fenced off
with temporary fences, but soon, permanent fences will be installed. They will

MS Bolette of the English company
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is the first sea cruise ship to use the new terminal.
It is also the largest cruise ship to visit Antwerp this year. With its 1.300
passengers, it was also a good stress test to see how the handling of a large
ship in the new terminal is done.

volgens plan verloopt zullen er in 2022 in totaal 23 zeecruises aanmeren in
Antwerpen, goed voor bijna 18.000 passagiers. MS Bolette zal zelf 4 van de aanlopen

maar liefst 8 zeecruiseschepen voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komen.
Ook de riviercruiseschepen zijn
dit jaar weer goed vertegenwoordigd met niet minder dan 626 verwachte aanlopen.
In totaal zullen ze 105.000 toeristen naar Antwerpen brengen. De schepen zullen,
als de capaciteit er zich toe leent ook kunnen aanmeren aan het nieuwe
cruiseponton. Zoals altijd wordt ook het Kattendijkdok nog steeds gebruikt als
aanlegplaats.

onderzoekschip Belgica lag op 15 en 16 maart 2022 voor de eerste keer
aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het schip is het drijvende laboratorium van Het Koninklijk
Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen. RV Belgica zal jaarlijks naar Antwerpen
komen om de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde te testen.

research vessel Belgica was docked in Antwerp for the first time on 15 and 16
March 2022. The ship is the floating laboratory of The Royal Institute of
Natural Sciences. RV Belgica will come to Antwerp annually to test the water
quality of the Scheldt.

onderzoekschip van de Belgische Marine bracht op 15 en 16 maart 2023 voor de
eerste keer een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het schip vervangt de oude Belgica (A962)
die van 1984 tot en met 2021 actief was. Door de ouderdom en de beperkte
grootte voldeed het niet meer aan de hedendaagse eisen van een volledig
uitgerust onderzoeksschip. Het schip werd daarom verkocht en is ondertussen
alweer in zee gestoken als onderzoeksschip in Oekraïne.

Navy's new research ship paid its first visit to Antwerp on 15 and 16 March
2023. The ship replaces the old Belgica (A962), which operated from 1984 to
2021. Due to its age and limited size, it no longer met today's requirements of
a fully equipped research vessel. The ship was therefore sold and has since
been put to sea again as a research vessel in Ukraine.
Diepgaand onderzoek / In-depth research
NL:RV Belgica is
met haar 71,4 meter lengte en 16,8 meter breedte veel groter dan haar
voorganger. Dat biedt veel meer mogelijkheden voor onderzoek. Zo zal het schip dieper
kunnen ingaan op thema’s waar haar voorganger ook onderzoek naar deed. Zo zal
het schip ingezet worden om de waterkwaliteit na te gaan en de ecologie in de
zee en Schelde. Ook de impact van de mens op het milieu met betrekking tot de
windmolens op zee en de zandwinning wordt onderzocht. Een nieuwigheid op dit
schip is dat het een volledige waterkolom kan analyseren, inclusief fauna, tot
op een diepte van maar liefst 5000 meter. Het is ook mogelijk om de bodem in
kaart te brengen.
EN: At 71.4 metres
long and 16.8 metres wide, RV Belgica is much larger than its predecessor. This
offers many more opportunities for research. For instance, the ship will be able to go deeper into themes that her
predecessor also researched. The ship will be used to investigate water quality
and ecology in the sea and Scheldt. Human impact on the environment with regard
to offshore windmills and sand extraction will also be investigated. A
new feature on this ship is that it can analyse an entire water column,

Hiervoor zijn er een dertigtal wetenschappers aan boord, alsook verschillende

om de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde na te kijken. Zo kan de evolutie van het
water over de verschillende jaren onderzocht worden.
Het vaargebied van de Belgica
beperkt zich echter niet enkel tot de Schelde en de Noordzee. Het is de bedoeling
dat het schip ook expedities zal varen naar noordoostelijke Atlantische Oceaan,
de Middellandse Zee en de Zwarte Zee. Ook reizen naar de Arctische wateren zijn
tijdens de zomer mogelijk doordat het schip gebouwd werd met ijsklasse 1A.
EN: The visit to
Antwerp was accompanied by a study of the water quality of the Scheldt. About 30 scientists are on board for this,

Gevarieerd seizoen / Varied season

eerste keer naar de stad zullen komen. Enkele van die schepen stonden gepland
om de voorbije twee jaar langs te komen, maar werden toen geannuleerd door het
coronavirus.
De eerste maiden call staat
gepland op 8 april met Hanseatic Spirit. Dat is het zusterschip van MS
Hanseatic Inspiration die in 2019 haar allereerste reis startte in Antwerpen.
Tegen het einde van april zullen
er nog 3 schepen voor de eerste keer langskomen. Op Paasmaandag zal MS Spirit
of Discovery van Saga Cruises langskomen voor een overnight call. Het 236 meter
lange schip werd pas in 2019 gebouwd. Op 26 en 29 april zullen respectievelijk
Le Champlain van Ponant en MS Deutschland van Phoenix Reisen voor het eerst
langskomen. Voor MS Deutschland is het de eerste keer dat ze onder de vlag van
Phoenix Reisen naar Antwerpen komt. Vroeger is het schip hier al wel geweest
voor Peter Deilmann Reederei.

Midden september krijgen we nog
eens zoek van AIDA Cruises. Dit keer zal AIDAaura voor een overnight call naar
Antwerpen komen. Anderhalve week later zal ze ook nog eens terugkomen.
Momenteel staat het gepland dat
het cruiseseizoen afgesloten zal worden door twee aanlopen van MS Ambience van
Ambassador Cruise Line. Die rederij is de herrijzenis van het failliet Cruise
& Maritime Voyages. Het is wel nog niet volledig zeker of de twee aanlopen
zullen plaatsvinden.
Hou er ook rekening mee dat
verschillende rederijen door de coronacrisis nog niet op volle capaciteit varen
waardoor hun cruises regelmatig opnieuw gepland worden. Dit kan natuurlijk ook
impact hebben op de geplande aanlopen in Antwerpen. Voor de laatste informatie
