Marco Polo - Antwerp Ship Repair

NL:

As some of you already know the Marco Polo is currently docked in one of the dry docks of Antwerp Ship Repair in the port of Antwerp. Cruise & Maritime Voyages has chosen Antwerp to give their flagship a major overhaul.

In 1965 the ship was built at the Mathias Thesen Yard in East-Germany for Baltic Shipping Company from the Soviet Union. The ship was christened 'Aleksandr Pushkin', called after the poet with the same name. The ship was one of 5 identical sister ships. Throughout the years the ship has been in the posession of many owners. But finally it was bought by Cruise & Maritime Voyages in 2010.

It's a small wonder the the Marco Polo is still sailing the seven seas. All her sister ships have already been scrapped. Because it is an older ship, and the safety regulations on cruise ships are getting very strict, it is only guessing how long it will be possible to maintain everything onboard. At the moment this does not seem to be a problem.

As you can see the shape of the Marco Polo is nothing like that of a modern cruise ship. The ship has been built at the end of the Ocean Liner-age. This is very well visible. For example: the life boats are located very high up on the ship and the bow is also very high. It's great to see a ship like this out of the water. It is the only way to take a look at what is located below the waterline.

The Marco Polo will be docked in our harbour for almost a full month. At the start of December the ship will start cruising again, ready for the season of 2013.
