School Ship MS Gann in Antwerpen 2026 – Ship Visit

NL: Het Noorse schoolschip MS Gann lag van 17 tot en met 19 april 2026 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd aan het cruiseponton bij het Noorderterras. Het 108 meter lange schip bracht 140 studenten naar Antwerpen tijdens een 10-daagse schoolcruise.

EN: The Norwegian training ship MS Gann was moored at the cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras for the first time from 17 to 19 April 2026. The 108-metre-long ship brought 140 students to Antwerp during a 10-day long school cruise.

NL: MS Gann meerde op 17 april 2026 rond 10:30 aan bij het Noorderterras. Het schoolschip van de Noorse rederij ‘Skoleskipet Gann’ – vertaald ‘Het schoolschip Gann’ – bezocht Antwerpen tijdens een 10-daagse schoolcruise. De thuishaven van het schip is de stad Stavanger in het Zuidwesten van Noorwegen. Van daaruit vertrok het schip op 14/04 naar de Deense stad Esbjerg, waar het op 15/04 aangemeerd lag. De eerstvolgende haven was Antwerpen. Vanuit Antwerpen werd koers gezet naar  Great Yarmouth in Engeland, waar het schip van 20 tot 21/04 aangemeerd lag. Van daaruit keerde het schip terug naar Noorwegen om op 23/04 rond de middag terug aan te meren in Stavanger.

EN: MS Gann docked at the Noorderterras at around 10.30h on 17 April 2026. The training ship of the Norwegian company ‘Skoleskipet Gann’ – translated as ‘The School Ship Gann’ – visited Antwerp during a 10-day educational cruise. The ship’s home port is the city of Stavanger in south-western Norway. From there, the ship set sail on 14 April for the Danish city of Esbjerg, where it moored on 15 April. The next port of call was Antwerp. From Antwerp, the ship set course for Great Yarmouth in England, where it was moored from 20 to 21 April. From there, the ship returned to Norway, docking back in Stavanger around noon on 23 April.

NL: Voor de eerste ligdag in Antwerpen (17/04) werden er excursies georganiseerd naar Brussel. Eén deel van de studenten bezocht Train World en de anderen brachten een bezoek aan de Noorse Ambassade.

Op 18 april is een deel van de studenten naar Rijsel in Frankrijk gereisd om de voetbalwedstrijd Lille-Nice in het ‘Stade Pierre-Mauroy’ van dichtbij mee te maken.

De laatste dag in Antwerpen, zondag, begon met een misviering aan boord. Voor de gelegenheid werden Priester Ole Martin Sandland en diaconale medewerker Frode Hove van de Noorse Zeemanskerk van Antwerpen aan boord uitgenodigd. In de namiddag verkenden de studenten verder de Antwerpse binnenstad.

Als afsluiter werd er ’s avonds op het achterdek van het schip een barbecue georganiseerd. Dankzij het mooie weer konden de studenten genieten van een mooie zonsondergang. Om 21:00u zette MS Gann dan koers naar Great Yarmouth in Engeland.

EN: On the first day of the ship’s stay in Antwerp (17 April), excursions were organised to Brussels. Some of the students visited Train World, whilst others paid a visit to the Norwegian Embassy.

On 18 April, some of the students travelled to Lille in France to watch the Lille vs Nice football match up close at the ‘Stade Pierre-Mauroy’.

The final day in Antwerp, Sunday, began with a Mass on board. For the occasion, Priest Ole Martin Sandland and Deacon Frode Hove from the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in Antwerp were invited on board. In the afternoon, the students continued to explore Antwerp city centre.

To round off the day, a barbecue was organised on the ship’s aft deck in the evening. Thanks to the fine weather, the students were able to enjoy a beautiful sunset. At 9.00 pm, the MS Gann set sail for Great Yarmouth in England.

Drijvende Middelbare School / Floating High School

NL: MS Gann is geen doorsnee opleidingsschip maar een schoolschip. Het verschil is dat de 2^de graad-studenten het volledige schooljaar aan boord van het schip doorbrengen. Ze volgen er niet enkel les maar slapen en eten er ook. Een opleidingsschip, zoals bijvoorbeeld het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży, wordt meestal maar een korte tijd gebruikt tijdens stages, waarna de studenten aan land verder studeren. MS Gann daarentegen is een volledig uitgeruste middelbare school die drijft.

De studenten van de eerste graad leven ook aan boord tijdens het schooljaar, maar zij volgen les in een schoolgebouw op de kaai op het eiland Buøy in Stavanger, direct naast het schip. Er worden lessen gegeven over bijvoorbeeld frezen en elektronica, maar ze leren er bijvoorbeeld ook lassen, wat aan boord risico’s met zich mee zou brengen.

Er zijn twee leertrajecten mogelijk. Het ene is een voorbereiding om verder te sturen in aan een Noorse maritieme vakschool, het andere aan een maritieme hogeschool. Bijna alle studenten krijgen na hun studies op MS Gann een stage aangeboden bij andere maritieme bedrijven. Ondertussen heeft de school sinds de oprichting al meer dan 13.000 studenten gehad.

Vijftig dagen per jaar zijn de studenten ook echt onderweg met MS Gann. Elk jaar wordt er in het voorjaar een schoolcruise georganiseerd naar het buitenland. De rest van de vaardagen worden binnen Noorwegen ingevuld. In de winter varen de studenten noordwaarts richting bijvoorbeeld de Lofoten, Harstad, Narvik of Bodø.  

EN: MS Gann is not a typical training ship but a school ship. The difference is that the 2^nd grade students spend the entire school year on board the ship. They not only attend lessons on board but also sleep and eat there. A training ship, such as the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży, is usually only used for a short period during an internship, after which the students continue their studies on land. MS Gann, on the other hand, is a fully equipped secondary school that floats.

First-year students also live on board during the school year, but they attend lessons in a school building on the quay on the island of Buøy in Stavanger, right next to the ship. Lessons are given on subjects such as milling and electronics, but they also learn skills such as welding, which would pose risks if carried out on board.

There are two possible study pathways. One prepares students for further study at a Norwegian maritime vocational college, the other at a maritime university. Almost all students are offered an internship with other maritime companies after completing their studies on MS Gann. Since its foundation, the school has already had more than 13,000 students.

The students spend fifty days a year actually at sea on the MS Gann. Every year in the spring, a school cruise is organised abroad. The remaining sailing days are spent within Norway. In winter, the students sail northwards to destinations such as the Lofoten Islands, Harstad, Narvik or Bodø. 

Schoolschip met Postboot-verleden / School Ship with Mailboat History

NL: MS Gann is één van drie zusterschepen die voor de Noorse rederij Hurtigruten gebouwd werden. Die rederij voer in die tijd dagelijks de volledige Noorse Westkust af tot aan de Russische grens en werd gebruikt voor zowel post- als passagiersvervoer. Tegenwoordig delen ze hun route met de rederij Havila, die een deel van de afvaarten voor hun rekening neemt.

MS Gann werd in 1982 gebouwd in de Noorse stad Trondheim als MS Narvik. Beide zusterschepen varen ook nog steeds rond. MS Vesterålen vaart momenteel nog steeds voor Hurtigruten. MS Midnatsol/Lyngen vaart sinds 2008 rond als MS National Geographic Explorer en was in 2023 nog te zien in Antwerpen.

EN: MS Gann is one of three sister ships built for the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten. At the time, the company operated daily services along the entire Norwegian west coast as far as the Russian border, carrying both mail and passengers. Today, they share their route with the shipping company Havila, which operates some of the sailings.

MS Gann was built in 1982 in the Norwegian city of Trondheim as MS Narvik. Both sister ships are still in service. MS Vesterålen currently still sails for Hurtigruten. MS Midnatsol/Lyngen has been sailing since 2008 as MS National Geographic Explorer and was still to be seen in Antwerp in 2023.

Een groot deel van het interieur is nog hetzelfde als tijdens haar tijd bij Hurtigruten. Overal doorheen het schip vind je de naam ‘MS Narvik’ nog terug, zoals bijvoorbeeld op de borden met dekplannen. Daarop staat ook nog de vlag van haar oorspronkelijke rederij ‘Ofotens og Vesterålens Dampskipsselskab (OVDS)’. Die vormde samen met de rederij ‘Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap (TFDS)’ de Hurtigruten (letterlijk vertaald ‘snelle route’) langs de Noorse kust.

In het Restaurant Finnmarken aan boord MS Gann is in de glazen panelen nog steeds de vlag van OVDS te vinden. Ook het langgerekte Restaurant Sandnes is met haar warme kleuren nog origineel. Het tapijt wordt zelfs vervangen met originele stukken die nog beschikbaar zijn.

EN: Hurtigruten’s ships, including the MS Gann, are fitted with a built-in gangway and cargo door that can be opened and extended automatically. On board, MS Gann is simply yet tastefully furnished. Much of the interior remains unchanged from her time with Hurtigruten. Throughout the ship, you can still find the name ‘MS Narvik’, for example on the deck plan signs. These also still bear the flag of her original shipping company, ‘Ofotens og Vesterålens Dampskipsselskab (OVDS)’. Together with the shipping company ‘Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap (TFDS)’, they formed the Hurtigruten (literally ‘fast route’) along the Norwegian coast.

In the Restaurant Finnmarken on board MS Gann, the OVDS flag can also still be found on the glass dividers. The elongated Restaurant Sandnes, with its warm colours, is also still in its original state. The carpet is even being replaced with original pieces that are still available.

NL: Andere delen van het schip werden wel aangepast om te voldoen aan de noden van een school. Achteraan het schip bevinden zich enkele moderne klaslokalen. Het Panorama Salon, op het hoogste dek van het schip, wordt ook gebruikt om les te geven en is in twee lokalen opgedeeld.

In het ruim van het schip zit ook nog een klaslokaal verscholen waar de studenten praktijklessen krijgen met allerlei gereedschap. Ook de rest van het ruim, dat vroeger voor een groot deel gebruikt werd als een autodek, is in grote maten aangepast als leeromgeving. Zo kan je er onder andere pneumatiek leren of hoe je een motor in elkaar steekt. Opvallend is ook dat in het ruim ook een fitnesruimte voorzien is.

Naast de technische aspecten wordt er ook aangeleerd hoe de rest van het schip werkt. Zo hebben de studenten een beurtrol om mee te helpen opdienen in het restaurant. Ook leren navigeren mag natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Daarvoor kunnen de studenten terecht op de brug van het schip, waar speciaal extra apparatuur geïnstalleerd werd om de praktijkopleiding gemakkelijker te maken.

EN: Other parts of the ship have been adapted to meet the needs of a school. At the aft of the ship are several modern classrooms. The Panorama Salon, on the ship’s top deck, is also used for teaching and has been divided into two classrooms.

Hidden away in the ship’s hold is another classroom where students receive practical lessons using all kinds of tools. The rest of the hold, which was previously used largely as a car deck, has also been adapted as a learning environment. Here, students can learn about pneumatics or how to assemble an engine, amongst other things. In the hold you can also find a well-equipped gym.

In addition to the technical aspects, students are also taught how the rest of the ship operates. For instance, students take turns helping to serve in the restaurant. Naturally, learning to navigate is also an essential part of the programme. For this, students can go to the ship’s bridge, where special additional equipment has been installed to facilitate practical training.

Hybride Aandrijving / Hybride Propulsion

NL: Sinds 2018 werkt het Noorse maritieme bedrijf Kongsberg samen met Skoleskipet Gann. Het bedrijf ontwikkeld nieuwe technologie om de scheepvaart te optimaliseren. MS Gann wordt daarbij gebruikt als testproject om oudere schepen uit te rusten met nieuwe milieuvriendelijke technologieën.

In 2021 werden de hoofdmotoren van MS Gann uitgerust met ‘Hybrid shaft generators’, die ervoor zorgen dat de elektriciteitsverdeling stabiel blijft wanneer de snelheid van het schip veranderd. Daarnaast werd er ook een 646 kWh ‘SAVe Energy battery system’ geïnstalleerd. Daarmee kan het schip bij lage snelheid voor langere tijd enkel op batterij varen. Bij hoge snelheid valt dit terug naar ongeveer een uur.

Al die nieuwe technologieën worden aangestuurd vanuit de machine controlekamer in het ruim van het schip. Hiervoor werd een volledig nieuwe console geïnstalleerd.

EN: Since 2018, the Norwegian maritime company Kongsberg has been collaborating with Skoleskipet Gann. The company is developing new technology to optimise shipping. MS Gann is being used as a test project to fit older ships with new environmentally friendly technologies.

In 2021, the main engines of MS Gann were fitted with ‘Hybrid shaft generators’, which ensure that the power distribution remains stable when the ship’s speed changes. In addition, a 646 kWh ‘SAVe Energy battery system’ was also installed. This allows the ship to sail on battery power alone for longer periods at low speed. At high speed, this drops to around one hour.

All these new technologies are controlled from the engine control room in the ship’s hold. A completely new console was installed for this purpose.

Geschiedenis / History

NL: De opstart van de school gaat terug tot 24 januari 1947. Toen werd ‘Unge Sjømenns Kristelige Forening (USKF)’ of ‘Christelijke Vereniging voor Jonge Zeelieden’ gesticht door Kapitein Claus M. Høie. Die Christelijke basis is vandaag de dag aan boord nog steeds een belangrijk deel van de opleiding. Kapiteit Høie ging op zoek naar een schip om de jeugd een goede maritieme basisopleiding te kunnen geven. Het allereerste schip was ‘MS Brand IV’ in 1949, maar dat werd al in 1951 vervangen door de allereerste ‘Gann’, een stoomschip dat voordien als DS Sandnæs rondvoer. In 1957 werd opnieuw van schip gewisseld. Dit keer werd DS Vågan (ex-DS Finnmarken van Hurtigruten) hernoemd tot ‘Gann’. De naam ‘Gann’ is afgeleid van de Gandsfjorden, de fjord tussen Sandnes en Stavanger.

Al in 1960 werd het sierlijke plezierjacht M/Y Marina overgenomen. Pas na 18 jaar zal men in 1978 nog eens van schip wisselen. Er wordt dan gekozen voor het passagiersschip MS Sandnes, dat momenteel nog steeds rondvaart rond Stavanger. De tot nu toe voorlaatste wissel was in 1995 toen MS Ragnvald Jarl van Hurtigruten werd overgenomen. Elk schip werd, zoals hun voorgangers, telkens omgedoopt tot MS Gann. Toen Hurtigruten in 2007 MS Narvik verkocht, heeft Skoleskipet Gann deze opportuniteit gegrepen. Het schip heeft in vergelijking met MS Ragnvald Jarl een veel grotere oppervlakte, waardoor het beter geschikt is om opleiding te geven. In 2003 bracht Skoleskipet Gann met dat schip ook een bezoek aan Antwerpen als MS Gann. MS Ragnvald Jarl vaart trouwens momenteel ook nog steeds rond onder die naam. Met bouwjaar 1956 is het één van de beschermde veteranenschepen in Noorwegen.

EN: The school’s origins date back to 24 January 1947. On that day, the ‘Unge Sjømenns Kristelige Forening (USKF)’ or ‘Christian Association for Young Seafarers’ was founded by Captain Claus M. Høie. That Christian foundation remains an important part of the training programme on board to this day. Captain Høie set out to find a ship on which to provide young people with a sound basic maritime education. The very first ship was ‘MS Brand IV’ in 1949, but this was replaced as early as 1951 by the very first ‘Gann’, a steamship that had previously sailed as DS Sandnæs. In 1957, the ship was changed again. This time, DS Vågan (ex-DS Finnmarken of Hurtigruten) was renamed ‘Gann’. The name ‘Gann’ is derived from the Gandsfjorden, the fjord between Sandnes and Stavanger.

As early as 1960, the elegant pleasure yacht M/Y Marina was acquired. It was not until 18 years later, in 1978, that another change of vessel took place. The choice then fell on the passenger ship MS Sandnes, which is still operating around Stavanger today. The penultimate change to date took place in 1995 when MS Ragnvald Jarl was acquired from Hurtigruten. Each ship, like its predecessors, was renamed MS Gann. When Hurtigruten sold MS Narvik in 2007, Skoleskipet Gann seized this opportunity. Compared to MS Ragnvald Jarl, the ship has a much larger surface area, making it better suited for training purposes. In 2003 Skoleskipet Gann also visited Antwerp with that ship as MS Gann. MS Ragnvald Jarl is still sailing today. Built in 1956, it is one of Norway’s protected heritage ships.

NL: Wist je dat? een 16 meter lange en 5 meter hoge sectie van DS Gann (ex- Vågan/Finnmarken) in 1998 ontdekt werd in een bos in Beekbergen, bij Apeldoorn in Nederland? Nadat het schip in 1960 in Rotterdam aan een sloper verkocht werd, is een deel van het salon- en cabinedek als bij wonder bewaard gebleven. In 2003 werd het overgebracht naar Noorwegen en nu is het, volledig gerestaureerd, te bezichtigen in het Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes.

EN: Did you know? A 16-metre-long and 5-metre-high section of the DS Gann (ex-Vågan/Finnmarken) was discovered in 1998 in a forest in Beekbergen, near Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. After the ship was sold to a scrapyard in Rotterdam in 1960, part of the saloon and cabin deck miraculously survived. In 2003, it was transported to Norway and now, fully restored, it is on display at the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes.

Maiden Call MS Renaissance in Antwerpen 2026 – Ship Visit

NL: Het Franse cruiseschip MS Renaissance lag op 15 april 2026 voor de eerst keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het 220 meter lange schip was voor het laatst te zien in de Scheldestad in 2000, toen het als MS Maasdam voor Holland America Line voer.

EN: The French cruise ship MS Renaissance docked in Antwerp for the first time on 15 April 2026. The 220-metre-long vessel was last seen in the city on the Scheldt in 2000, when it was sailing as the MS Maasdam for Holland America Line.

NL: Het eerste bezoek van MS Renaissance in Antwerpen is ook meteen het eerste bezoek van de rederij Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC). In 2022 werd het schip overgekocht van de rederij Seajets, die het schip sinds 2020 opgelegd hadden in Griekenland nadat Holland America Line het tijdens de coronacrisis verkocht had, samen met haar zusterschepen.

De rederij CFC is in januari 2025 samengegaan met Ambassador Cruise Line en hebben samen de Ambassador Group gevormd. Hierdoor heeft MS Renaissance ook de huiskleuren van Ambassador Cruise Line overgenomen met de paarse en groene accenten. Ook de gekende grote paarse ‘A’ werd op de zijkant van het schip geschilderd.

EN: MS Renaissance’s first visit to Antwerp also marks the first visit by the cruise line Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC). In 2022, the ship was purchased from Seajets, which had it laid up in Greece since 2020 after Holland America Line sold it, along with its sister ships, during the coronavirus crisis.

In January 2025, CFC merged with Ambassador Cruise Line to form the Ambassador Group. As a result, MS Renaissance has also adopted Ambassador Cruise Line’s corporate colours, featuring purple and green accents. The familiar large purple ‘A’ has also been painted on the side of the ship.

Maiden Call Ceremony

NL: Zoals gebruikelijk bij het eerste bezoek van een cruiseschip, overhandigde een delegatie van de Stad Antwerpen geschenken aan de kapitein. Kapitein Herve wisselde met de Stad een plaquette uit om het eerste bezoek te herdenken. Hij kreeg ook een boek over de stad Antwerpen dat in de bibliotheek van het schip zou komen.

Antwerpen was voor Kapitein Herve geen onbekende, want hij vertelde dat hij vroeger al verschillende keren per trein in de stad was geweest.

EN: As is customary on a cruise ship’s maiden visit, a delegation from the City of Antwerp presented gifts to the captain. Captain Herve exchanged a commemorative plaque to the city to mark the maiden visit. He was also given a book about the city of Antwerp, which would be added to the ship’s library.

Antwerp was no stranger to Captain Herve, as he explained that he had visited the city several times by train in the past.

Grandeur of Holland America Line with Ambassador-touch

NL: Het interieur van MS Renaissance is door de jaren heen verschillende keren vernieuwd, maar er werd toch een groot deel van het oorspronkelijke interieur van haar tijd bij Holland America Line (HAL) behouden. Het schip werd in 1993 gebouwd bij de Italiaanse scheepswerf Fincantieri als het eerste van vier schepen. Het interieur van MS Maasdam is ontworpen met motieven die hommage brengen aan de vroegere Nederlandse rederijen ‘Vereenigde Oostindische en Westindische Compagnie’. Overal doorheen het schip worden ook historische artefacten ten toon gesteld.

EN: The interior of MS Renaissance has been refurbished several times over the years, but a large part of the original interior from her time with Holland America Line (HAL) has been preserved. The ship was built in 1993 at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri as the first of four ships. The interior of MS Maasdam has been designed with motifs paying homage to the former Dutch shipping company ‘Dutch East & West India Company’. Historical artefacts are also on display throughout the ship.

NL: Het interieur van het schip wordt op veel plaatsen gedomineerd door veel ronde vormen, gecombineerd met messing en hout. Het Renaissance Theater is daarvan een goed voorbeeld, maar ook het Grand Restaurant draagt, met haar pompeuze lampen/kandelaars, bij aan dit impressionante design. Het 3-dekken-hoge atrium werd ook in dezelfde stijl ontworpen en presenteert een kunstwerk van Luciano Vistosi dat uit meer dan 2000 stukken glas bestaat. Het kunstwerk benut de volledige hoogte van het atrium.

Opvallen is ook dat op veel plaatsen aan boord de naam Maasdam nog terug te vinden is. Zo zijn er volledige vitrinekasten te vinden waarin de maiden call plaques ten toon gesteld worden.

EN: The ship’s interior is dominated in many places by rounded shapes, combined with brass and wood. The Renaissance Theatre is a fine example of this, but the Grand Restaurant, with its opulent chandeliers, also contributes to this impressive design. The three-deck-high atrium was also designed in the same style and features a work of art by Luciano Vistosi comprising more than 2,000 pieces of glass. The artwork makes use of the full height of the atrium.

It is also interesting to see that the name Maasdam can still be found in many places on board. For instance, there are entire display cabinets in which the maiden call plaques are exhibited.

NL: Sommige ruimtes werden door de jaren heen wel in een nieuw design gestoken. De Panoramique Lounge & Nightclub, boven de brug van het schip, werd in een lichter, meer modern design aangekleed. Le Décanteur, een wijnbar naast het Atrium, werd ook met hedendaags design uitgerust.

Direct onder de reddingsboten bevindt zich de Promenade van het schip. Op dat brede wandelpad kan je een volledige cirkel rond het dek lopen of van het zicht op zee genieten in één van de ligstoelen. Het dek zelf is nog met teak bekleed. Vroeger werden de dekken van schepen regelmatig uitgerust met deze houtsoort, maar tegenwoordig komt dat minder en minder voor.

EN: Some areas have been given a new look over the years. The Panoramique Lounge & Nightclub, located above the ship’s bridge, has been refurbished in a lighter, more modern style. Le Décanteur, a wine bar next to the Atrium, has also been given a contemporary makeover.

Directly beneath the lifeboats lies the ship’s Promenade. On this wide walkway, you can walk a full circle around the deck or enjoy the sea view from one of the sun loungers. The deck itself is still clad in teak. In the past, ship decks were regularly fitted with this type of wood, but nowadays this is becoming less and less common.

NL: MS Renaissance heeft ook twee zwembaden aan boord. Eén op het achterdek met zicht op zee. Het andere zwembad bevind zich in het midden van het schip en is van de wind geschut door glaswanden en een wandelpad op het dek erboven. Bij slecht weer kan het volledige dek ook gesloten worden dankzij het grote schuifdak.

EN: MS Renaissance also has two swimming pools on board. One is on the aft deck with sea views. The other pool is located in the middle of the ship and is sheltered from the wind by glass walls and a walkway on the deck above. In bad weather, the entire deck can also be enclosed thanks to the large sliding roof.

Na 26 jaar opnieuw in Antwerpen / Back in Antwerp after 26 years

NL: MS Maasdam is voor Antwerpen een belangrijk schip geweest. Het was op 30 augustus 1996 het eerste zeecruiseschip dat de stad bezocht na de oprichting van Antwerp Cruise Port. Voordien kwamen er af en toe al zeecruiseschepen langs, maar pas vanaf 1996 werden ze actief bijgehouden en werd Antwerpen actief als cruisebestemming gepromoot.

Die allereerste aanloop was daarbij ook nog vrij onverwacht want het 3 jaar oude schip moest eigenlijk naar Gent varen, maar doordat de sluis bij Terneuzen niet veilig bevonden werd voor een schip van die grootte, werd beslist om MS Maasdam door te laten varen naar Antwerpen.

EN: The MS Maasdam has been an important ship for Antwerp. On 30 August 1996, it was the first ocean-going cruise ship to visit the city following the establishment of Antwerp Cruise Port. Ocean-going cruise ships had occasionally called at the port before that, but it was only from 1996 onwards that their visits were actively recorded and Antwerp was actively promoted as a cruise destination.

That very first call was also quite unexpected, as the three-year-old ship was actually due to sail to Ghent; however, because the lock at Terneuzen was deemed unsafe for a ship of that size, it was decided to sail MS Maasdam to Antwerp.

NL: Op 13 juni 2000 kwam het schip dan nog één keer terug naar Antwerpen als MS Maasdam. In 2020 werd het schip dan uiteindelijk verkocht en zo kwam het na 26 jaar toch opnieuw naar onze stad, al heeft het wel nu een andere naam.

In 2027 staat MS Renaissance terug aangemeld voor een bezoek aan Antwerpen.

EN: On 13 June 2000, the ship returned to Antwerp one last time as MS Maasdam. In 2020, the ship was finally sold, and so, after 26 years, it returned to our city once again, albeit under a different name.

In 2027, the MS Renaissance is scheduled to visit Antwerp again.

Nieuw Ponton Steenplein vanaf 2027 / New Pontoon Steenplein from 2027

NL: Het Ponton Van Dijck aan het Steenplein in Antwerpen wordt vernieuwd. Nog dit jaar wordt het huidige ponton verlengt om de capaciteit te verhogen, maar tegen de lente van 2027 zal het vervangen zijn door een nagelnieuwe constructie van 150 meter lang met plaats voor 4 schepen.

EN: The Pontoon Van Dijck at the Steenplein in Antwerp is getting renovated. The current pontoon will be extended later this year to increase its capacity, but by spring 2027 it will have been replaced by a brand-new 150-metre-long structure with space for four vessels.

NL: Het Ponton Van Dijck, soms ook het Flandriaponton genoemd, ligt voor het Steenplein in de Schelde. De huidige constructie ligt er sinds februari 2008. Toen bestond het ponton nog uit 3 aparte delen die de volledige inham van de Scheldekaaien aan het Steenplein vulden. In 2017 werden twee van de drie delen weggehaald omdat de inham aan het dichtslibben was, waardoor de achterste delen bij laagwater op het droge kwamen te liggen. De uitgevoerde baggerwerken haalden niet het verhoopte resultaat en moesten in de jaren ervoor jaarlijks herhaald worden.

Sind 1 juli 2017 werd het ponton ook intensief gebruikt voor openbaar vervoer over het water. Op die dag startte na 58 jaar opnieuw de ferry tussen het Steenplein en Linkeroever op, maar ook De Waterbus ging die dag officieel uit de startblokken.

Al snel werd duidelijk dat het ponton te weinig capaciteit had, want regelmatig kwamen ook nog de rondvaartboten van onder andere Flandria en Rivertours passagiers oppikken. Die werden dan telkens weggejaagd door de volgende aankomende ferry of Waterbus.

EN: The Pontoon Van Dijck, sometimes also referred to as the Flandria Pontoon, is situated off the Steenplein in the river Scheldt. The current structure has been in place since February 2008. At that time, the pontoon consisted of three separate sections that filled the entire inlet of the Scheldt quays at the Steenplein. In 2017, two of the three sections were removed because the inlet was silting up, causing the rear sections to run aground at low tide. The dredging work carried out did not achieve the desired result and had to be repeated annually in the preceding years.

Since 1 July 2017, the pontoon has also been used extensively for public transport by water. On that day, after a 58-year hiatus, the ferry service between the Steenplein and Linkeroever (the left river bank) resumed, and De Waterbus also officially launched its service.

It soon became clear that the pontoon lacked sufficient capacity, as sightseeing boats from operators such as Flandria and Rivertours were also regularly picking up passengers. These were then invariably forced to move on by the next arriving ferry or Waterbus.

Tijdelijke verlenging in 2026 / Temporary extension in 2026

NL: Het passagiersvervoer over de Schelde wordt elk jaar belangrijker en zeker met het oog op de lange sluiting van de metrokokers tussen de stations Opera en Van Eeden vanaf 4 mei 2026 zal het Ponton Van Dijck nog meer passagiers te slikken krijgen. Om dat op te vangen wordt er een tussentijdse oplossing aangeboden. Het huidige ponton zal tussen april en mei een uitbreiding krijgen, met een extra pontondeel en een tweede toegangsbrug. Hiervoor zullen bagger- en heiwerken plaatsvinden.

EN: Passenger transport across the Scheldt is becoming increasingly important every year, and with the prolonged closure of the metro tunnels between the stations Opera and Van Eeden from 4 May 2026, the Pontoon Van Dijck will have to handle even more passengers. To cope with this, an interim solution is being put in place. The current pontoon will be extended between April and May, with an additional pontoon section and a second access bridge. Dredging and pile-driving works will be carried out for this purpose.

Nieuw Ponton 2027 / New Pontoon 2027

NL: In november 2026 starten dan de werken voor het nieuwe ponton. Tijdens die werken zal het huidige ponton tegen het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras gelegd worden.

Het nieuwe ponton zal 150 meter lang worden, wat 50 meter langer is dan de huidige constructie. Het wordt een stalen constructie van 1700 ton in het lichtgrijs waarop een luifel staat met zachtgele accenten. Die luifel werd zo ontworpen dat hij bij slecht weer veel ruimte biedt om te schuilen. Er komt één grote ruime loopbrug die zal aansluiten aan de kaai bij het Zuiderterras. Daarvoor zal nog een nieuw toegangsplatform geplaats worden, wat te vergelijken is met de toegangsplatformen van het cruiseponton.

EN: Work on the new pontoon will begin in November 2026. During these works, the current pontoon will be moved against the cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.

The new pontoon will be 150 metres long, which is 50 metres longer than the current structure. It will be a 1,700-tonne steel structure in light grey, topped by a canopy with soft yellow accents. This canopy has been designed to provide ample shelter in bad weather. There will be a single large, spacious gangway bridge connecting to the quay at the Zuiderterras. A new access platform will be installed in front of this, similar to the access platforms of the cruise pontoon.

NL: De extra lengte van het ponton geeft plaats om in totaal 4 schepen tegelijkertijd te laten aanmeren. Aan het huidige ponton kunnen slechts 3 schepen liggen. Wanneer beide waterbussen en de ferry aangemeerd liggen zal er dus bijvoorbeeld ook nog een plezierboot kunnen aanmeren.

De bouw van het ponton zal heel binnenkort al starten in de ateliers van de aannemers. In het voorjaar van 2027 zal het ponton geplaatst worden, samen met het nieuwe toegangsplatform aan het Zuiderterras en de toegangsbrug. In de lente zal het ponton dan in gebruik genomen worden.

AG Vespa, het autonoom gemeentebedrijf voor vastgoed en stadsprojecten, coördineert samen met De Vlaamse Waterweg nv de heraanleg van de Scheldekaaien. De Vlaamse Waterweg nv realiseert de tijdelijke uitbreiding van het bestaande ponton met aannemer ARTES Roegiers, en het nieuwe ponton met medewerking van AG Vespa. Het ontwerp van het nieuwe ponton is van studiebureau SBE en wordt gerealiseerd door de tijdelijke maatschappij Herbosch-Kiere en Iemants.

EN: The extra length of the pontoon provides space for a total of four vessels to moor at the same time. The current pontoon can only accommodate three vessels. So, for example, when both waterbuses and the ferry are moored, there will still be room for a pleasure boat to moor as well.

Construction of the pontoon will begin very soon in the contractors’ workshops. In the spring of 2027, the pontoon will be installed, together with the new access platform at the Zuiderterras and the access bridge. The pontoon will then be put into service in the spring.

AG Vespa, the autonomous municipal company for property and urban projects, is coordinating the redevelopment of the Scheldt quays in collaboration with De Vlaamse Waterweg nv. De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is carrying out the temporary extension of the existing pontoon with contractor ARTES Roegiers, and the new pontoon in collaboration with AG Vespa. The design of the new pontoon is by engineering firm SBE and is being realised by the temporary joint venture Herbosch-Kiere and Iemants.
