The 181 metres long ship is the smallest ship of the fleet. Since last year you can find the logo of the cruise line on the bow of the ship. In 2016 Princess Cruises decided to repaint all their ships with the so-called ‘Sea Witch’ on the bow.

MS Pacific Princess was built in 1999 as ‘R three’ for the now defunct company Renaissance Cruises. The ship is one of eight identical ships that were built for the cruise line. After the company went bankrupt in 2001 the ships were divided under several companies. Princess Cruises bought one of the ships, Oceania Cruises currently has four of the sister ships, and the remaining three ships belong to Azamara Club Cruises.

On the inside the ships are more or less identical, but every cruise lines lays its own accents on board. Via the link you can take a look on board MS Azamara Quest, a sister ship of MS Pacific Princess: Interior Azamara Quest

Maiden Call Cruise Yacht Le Lapérouse of Ponant in Antwerpen

EN: The brand-new expedition cruise ship Le Lapérouse of the French cruise line Ponant was docked in Antwerp for the first time on September 3th 2018. It is the first ship in the world with an underwater lounge. Step on board of the ship in this article.

EN: The French cruise company Ponant visited Antwerp again after a few years of absence. This time we were able to welcome their newest expedition cruise ship Le Lapérouse at the Scheldt quays. Le Lapérouse has a length of 131 metres and was designed as a yacht with a capacity of 180 passengers. The ship is the first of a series of six almost identical ships that will be built for Ponant between 2018 and 2020. On July 10th 2018 Le Lapérouse was christened in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Onderwaterlounge / Underwater Lounge

EN: Unique to this class of ships is the fact that they all have an underwater lounge on board. For the first time a cruise line has chosen to install two windows below the water line which gives you the opportunity the experience what moves in the waters around the ship. The middle of each window is 2,5 metres below sea level. The lounge got the name ‘Le Blue Eye’ and was designed to resemble the curves of a whale. Apart from the visual aspect the room has also been fitted with a special sound system that records the sounds of the water around the ship and plays it in the lounge. The murky water of the river Scheldt might give a bit of a distorted impression of the lounge which is designed for sailings in clearer waters. The fact that the vessel is also designed as an icebreaker makes the choice for the windows even more remarkable. Le Lapérouse was build with ice-class PC6 which makes her able to break ice up to one metre in thickness.

Ontdekkingsreizigers / Explorers

EN: Each of the six new ships will be named after a French explorer. Le Lapérouse was named after Jean-François de La Pérouse who, at the end of the 18th Century, departed on a mission for King Louis XVI to map out the Pacific Ocean. The other ships will be named Le Champlain, Le Bougainville, Le Dumont-D'Urville, Le Surville and Le Bellot.

EN: Because the ships are designed as expedition cruise ships they have gotten modifications that normal cruise ships do not have. That way they can offer their passengers an extra dimension to the cruise. One of those additional things is the marina at the back of the ship which can be folded out. This forms a docking place for the water sport equipment. The ships are also equipped with a small fleet of zodiacs to bring the passengers closer to places which the ship itself cannot reach.

EN: At the moment Le Lapérouse will mostly be deployed in the warmer regions like the Maldives, Borneo and New-Zealand. During every cruise there are also specialised guides on board to inform the passengers about a wide range of topics.

Expeditiesfeer / Expedition abiance

EN: When you step on board you notice that the ship is not centered around entertainment and flashy design. The light colours and the use of wood make it feel natural and cozy. All throughout the ship you can also find beautiful photos of exotic destinations. At the front of the ship there is a small theater that is mainly used for lectures about the sights during the cruise. At the back of the ship you can find the pool. This so-called 'infinity pool' has a glass wall at the end of it which makes it appear as if the pool mixes with the sea behind it.

Of course there is also a large restaurant on board where can you can once again see the lighter colours and use of wood return. Next to that there are also several cozy lounges where the passengers can relax. There is also a very well equipped Spa on board with even a sauna with its own window.

The ship might be smaller but it is not really noticeable. Due to the use of mirrors and reflective innox-plates smalls rooms suddenly feel a lot more spacious.

Opvallende bouwwijze / Interesting building method

EN: The six new ships of Ponant are built in a special manner. The casco of the ship is built at a shipyard in Romania.  When the shell of the ship is finished it is towed to Norway where it is further completed at another shipyard. During the design phase the emphasis lied on the usage of light colours. The way the ship would get a relaxing character, what perfectly represents the concept of an expedition cruise.
