Star Flyer in Antwerpen - Maiden Call

NL:

Today the Star Flyer was docked in Antwerp for the very first time. This sailing ship is really a cruise ship. Together with her two sister ships, Star Clipper and Royal Clipper ( the biggest sailing ship in the world, 134 metres), it sails the seven seas.

The Star Flyer has a length of 115 metres and can accommodate 182 passengers. The ship is a classic sailing ship with four masts and a total of 16 manual sails with a surface of 3365m². The highest point of the Star Flyer stretches 63 metres above the waterline. For the passengers a crew of 75 members is provided. The passengers are accommodated in 85 cabines of wich 79 with an oceanview. The ship is divided in 4 different decks. There is no casino, cinema or theater onboard like on a normal cruise ship, but there are two swimming pools, a small library and a lounge where you can relax and listen to some piano music or some singing. There is one restaurant onboard wich is decorated very attractive with a lot of wood and nautical elements.

The ship has also a special relation with Belgium. The ship namely has been built in Langerbrugge at Ghent. In July 1991 the ship has been delivered to the cruise line 'Star Clippers'. The Star Flyer was the first commercial sailing vessel built for 140 years. It was also the first commercial sailing vessel to cross the North-Atlantic Ocean in 90 years.

Normally the ships of Star Clippers sail in the warmer regions but this season they try Northern-Europe. This is very good news for Antwerp.

Thanks to an invitation from the Alderman of Tourism, Philip Heylen it was possible to get onboard this beautiful ship. You can find the photos below or on our website.

Once we were onboard this majestical ship we went to the library where we had a meeting with Captain Jürgen Müller-Cyran. He told us that he sailed for more than 20 years for the cruise line 'Star Clippers' and that the atmosphere onboard was fantastic. More than 60 percent of the passengers are regular guests onboard the Star Flyer. That makes the crew and the passengers a very close group of friends.

Several gifts were presented to the captain. You can read more about it below. After our drink  we got a tour around the ship by one of the officers. He lead us deep into the ship where the restaurant was located. When you enter it you will be suprised how large the ship really is. The crew was busy preparing the tables for dinner so we continued our tour. We went trough a cosy small corridor where the shop was located. You can buy serval souvenirs and clothing with the cruise line's logo on it. Next to the shop there was a small window. This was the reception. After that we were lead up again via a beautiful staircase with turned wooden handrails.

Once we were on the upperdeck again we had a short look around. After that we thanked the captain for the visit and left the ship with regret.
