NL: Het Noorderterras,
de verhoogde wandelpromenade aan de Jordaenskaai, zal in 2022 volledig
gerenoveerd worden. Daarbij zal er op het terras ook deels een duinenlandschap aangeplant
worden. Op die manier zal project ‘Kaailine’ de wandelterrassen langs de
Schelde nieuw leven inblazen.

‘Kaailine’, een verwijzing naar het High Line Park in New York, wil de Stad
Antwerpen het Noorderterras en Zuiderterras langs de Scheldekaaien opwaarderen
en terug aantrekkelijker maken. Momenteel overheerst de graffiti nog op beide
wandelterrassen, maar project ‘Kaailine’ voorziet een grondige renovatie van de
beide geklasseerde bouwwerken zodat ze nadien opnieuw kunnen stralen in de grandeur
van weleer. Daarbij zullen de terrassen ook vergroend worden met behulp van
grote plantenbakken.
Eerder dit jaar werd aangekondigd
dat het Zuiderterras eerst aan de beurt zou komen voor de renovatie. Spijtig
genoeg werd er na onderzoek opgemerkt dat de kaaimuur daar eerst gestabiliseerd
zal moeten worden. Daardoor werd ervoor gekozen om de focus te verleggen naar
het Noorderterras.
EN: With the
'Kaailine' project, a reference to the High Line Park in New York, the City of
Antwerp wants to upgrade the Noorderterras and Zuiderterras along the Scheldt
quays and make them more attractive again. At the moment graffiti still
dominates both terraces, but the 'Kaailine' project provides for a thorough
renovation of both listed buildings so that they can once again shine in the
grandeur of yesteryear. The terraces will also be made greener with the help of
large plant containers.
Earlier this year, it was
announced that the Zuiderterras would be renovated first. Unfortunately, after
investigation it was noted that the quay wall there will first need to be
stabilised. As a result, it was decided to shift the focus to the Noorderterrase.
NL: Na de renovatie
zal het Noorderterras veranderd zijn in een groene wandelboulevard. Voor de
vergroening van het Noorderterras werd voor planten gekozen die gedijen in de
buurt van de Schelde met haar brakke water. Er komen grote plantenvakken
waarin mix van grassen zoals verbena of grote pimpernel geplant zal worden, die
overgaan in struiken en heesters met een maximale hoogte van anderhalve meter.
Daarnaast komen er ook zones met planten zoals zeekool, cipressenkruid en
blauwspirea. De plantvakken zijn zo opgebouwd dat ze ook regenwater zullen kunnen
bufferen.
“Omdat de plantvakken langs de
stadszijde staan, blijft het zicht op de Schelde behouden. Het zitmeubilair,
zowel vrijstaand en als onderdeel van de plantvakken, wordt eveneens met zicht
op de Schelde geplaatst”, laat Schepen van Stadsontwikkeling Annick De
Ridder weten. Verder zal er bij de renovatie van de terrassen ook bekeken worden
of de daken deels opengemaakt kunnen worden zodat er meer licht tot op de
kaaien komt.
Als alles goed gaat zullen de werken
aan het Noorderterras starten in de zomer van 2022. Hierdoor zal het
wandelterras ook een tijd afgesloten worden voor het publiek. ‘Kaailine’ maakt
deel uit van het centrale deel van de Scheldekaaien, tussen Noorderterras en
Zuiderterras. Voor dat deel is een ontwerp voor de kaaivlakte in opmaak. De
heraanleg van de kaaien tussen Noorderterras en Steenplein, waarbij ook de
ruimte onder het terras een nieuwe invulling krijgt, staat gepland vanaf het
voorjaar van 2024.

renovation, the Noorderterras will be transformed into a green pedestrian
boulevard. To make the Noorderterras greener, plants were chosen that thrive in
the vicinity of the Scheldt with its brackish water. There will be large
planting beds in which a mixture of grasses such as verbena or large burnet
will be planted, which will then change into shrubs and bushes with a maximum
height of one and a half metres. There will also be zones with plants such as
sea kale, cypress herb and bluespirea. The planting beds are constructed in
such a way that they will also be able to buffer rainwater.
"Because the planting beds
are on the city side, the view of the Scheldt is preserved. The seating, both
free-standing and as part of the planting beds, will also be placed with a view
of the Scheldt," says Annick De Ridder, Alderman for Urban Development.
Furthermore, for the renovation of the terraces we will also examine whether
the roofs can be partially opened up so that more light can reach the quays.
If all goes well, work on the
Noorderterras will start in the summer of 2022. As a result, the walking
terrace will be closed off to the public for a while. Kaailine' is part of the
central part of the Scheldt quays, between Noorderterras and Zuiderterras. For
that part, a design for the quay area is in preparation. The reconstruction of
the quays between the Noorderterras and the Steenplein, whereby the space under
the terrace will also be given a new interpretation, is planned from the spring
of 2024.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines bracht op 5 en 6 november 2021 voor de eerste keer een
bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het schip meerde aan aan het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het
Noorderterras.

NL: Met de cruiseaanloop van MS Bolette op 5
en 6 november werd het korte cruiseseizoen van 2021 beëindigd. Antwerpen mocht
dit jaar vijf cruiseaanlopen ontvangen. Gezien de omstandigheden met COIVD-19
is dat geen slecht aantal. Er werden eerst nog enkele extra aanlopen verwacht
maar die werden al snel opnieuw geannuleerd door de rederijen vanwege de steeds
veranderende situatie. Het kan nog steeds zijn dat er aanlopen toegevoegd zullen
worden voor 2021, al achten we die kans wel vrij klein.
EN: With the cruise call of MS Bolette on 5 and
6 November, the short cruise season of 2021 has ended. Antwerp received a total
of five cruise calls this year. Given the circumstances with COIVD-19 that is
not a bad number. Initially, a few extra calls were expected, but these were
soon cancelled again by the cruise lines due to the ever-changing situation. It
is still possible that calls will be added for 2021, although we consider this
probability to be rather low.
NL: MS Bolette was het eerste cruiseschip dat
aanmeerde in Antwerpen sinds de officiële opening van Het Steen als toeristisch
centrum. Toch was het nog niet mogelijk om de cruiseterminal te gebruiken omdat
de verbinding tussen het terminalgebouw en het cruiseponton nog volop afgewerkt
wordt. Van zodra dat in orde is kunnen de passagiers ook in stijl ontvangen
worden in het middeleeuwse fort.
Voor de fotografen was het wel al mogelijk om voor de eerste
keer een cruiseschip te fotograferen vanuit de nieuwe uitkijktoren van Het
Steen. Van daaruit krijg je een knap zicht over het volledige cruiseponton.

NL: Het mag dan wel de allereerst aanloop zijn
van het schip als ‘MS Bolette’, toch is het niet de alleerste keer dat het
schip in Antwerpen te zien is. In 2001 lag het schip al twee keer aangemeerd in
Antwerpen als MS Amsterdam van Holland America Line.
In 2020 kocht Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines het schip nadat de
Carnival Corp., het moederbedrijf van Holland America Line, door de coronapandemie
versneld afscheid nam van maar liefst 19 cruiseschepen. Ook haar zusterschip MS
Rotterdam werd gekocht door Fred. Olsen. Dat schip kreeg de naam Borealis.
Het ziet ernaar uit dat MS Bolette ook het cruiseseizoen van
2022 zal mogen openen.

restauratie opent Het Steen de poorten voor het grote publiek op vrijdag 22
oktober 2021. Als toeristisch onthaalcentrum is het de ideale startplaats om
Antwerpen te ontdekken. Het oudste bewaarde gebouw van Antwerpen herbergt een
bezoekerscentrum, een nieuwe cruiseterminal, panoramisch dakterras en het
belevingsparcours The Antwerp Story.

NL: Het Steen kende de voorbije 800 jaar
veel functies: van burcht tot gevangenis en van tehuis tot museum. Koen Kennis,
schepen voor toerisme: “Sinds 2008 bleef het gesloten voor het brede publiek,
waardoor een hele generatie Antwerpenaren opgroeide zonder het oudste gebouw
van de stad ooit te hebben betreden. Ik heb dat altijd erg jammer gevonden. Met
deze restauratie krijgen de Sinjoren ‘hun’ Steen nu terug, en bovendien zwaaien
de poorten ook open voor bezoekers aan de stad. Het Steen maakte immers zoveel
mee dat het de perfecte plek is om het verhaal van de stad te vertellen.”
EN: Het Steen has had many functions
over the past 800 years: from fortress to prison and from home to museum. Koen
Kennis, alderman for tourism: "Since 2008, it has remained closed to the
general public, causing a whole generation of Antwerp citizens to grow up
without ever having entered the city's oldest building. I have always found
that a great pity. With this restoration, the ‘Sinjoren’ will now get 'their' Steen
back, and moreover, the gates will swing open for visitors to the city. After
all, the Steen has been through so much that it is the perfect place to tell
the city's story."
Het toeristisch centrum / All things tourism
NL: In het vernieuwde Steen is alles wat
met toerisme in Antwerpen te maken heeft gecentraliseerd. Zo verhuisde de toeristische
dienst en de stadswinkel van de Grote Markt naar het middeleeuwse fort. Er werd
ook een belevingsparcours gecreëerd met de naam The Antwerp Story. Tijdens dit interactieve
parcours kom je in een notendop te weten wat Antwerpen zo speciaal maakt. Hiervoor
wordt onder meer gebruik gemaakt van de laatste technologieën om zowel de
geschiedenis als het heden tot leven te laten komen.
EN: In the renovated Steen, everything
to do with tourism in Antwerp is centralised. The tourist information centre
and the city shop have moved from the Grote Markt to the medieval fortress. An
experience trail called The Antwerp Story has also been created. During this
interactive route you will find out in a nutshell what makes Antwerp so
special. The latest technologies are used to bring both history and the present
to life.
Cruise
Terminal
NL: Onderaan in het gebouw, op het
niveau van de kaai, werd er een nieuwe cruiseterminal gecreëerd. De passagiers
zullen ontvangen worden in een ruime hal waar plaats is voor 400 personen. Er
werd ook een aparte ruimte voorzien om de security-check te doen. Het geheel zal
uiteindelijk naadloos aansluiten op het nieuwe cruiseponton. Momenteel wordt er
nog de laatste hand gelegd aan de kaaien tussen de cruiseterminal en het ponton.
EN: In the lower half of the building,
on the level of the quay, a new cruise terminal was created. Passengers will be
welcomed in a spacious hall with room for 400 people. There is also a separate
area for the security check. The whole space will eventually connect seamlessly
to the new cruise pontoon. Currently, the finishing touches are being added to
the quay between the cruise terminal and the pontoon.
Uitkijktoren
/ Observation tower
NL: De nieuwe aanbouw van Het Steen
bevat ook een gloednieuwe uitkijktoren. De toren zal, op slechts enkele dagen
na, het volledige jaar door gratis te bezoeken zijn tussen 10:00 en 22:00u. Vanop
het hoogste punt krijg je een prachtig uitzicht over de Schelde. Ook wanneer er
een cruiseschip aangemeerd ligt aan het cruiseponton zal dat vanop de toren
heel goed te zien zijn. Naast de toren bevindt zich ook nog een dakterras dat
vrij toegankelijk is.
EN: The new extension to Het Steen also

can be visited free of charge throughout the year between 10:00 and 22:00. From
the highest point, you will have a magnificent view over the river Scheldt.
When a cruise ship is moored at the cruise pontoon, this will be clearly

NL: Voor de strakke
timing te respecteren ging de kapitein nog even op de rem staan: zondag stipt
om 13.30u nam de Global Mercy feilloos de laatste Scheldebocht
richting het oude stadscentrum van Antwerpen. Talloze kijklustigen vergaapten
zich langs de kaaien aan het 174 meter lange schip, begeleid door een paar
slepers van het Havenbedrijf, die voor een feestelijk watergordijn zorgden.
Het nieuwe ziekenhuisschip zal
ongeveer een half jaar lang blijven liggen aan het operationele hoofdkwartier
(NOC, kaai 602) van het Havenbedrijf, waar het helemaal wordt afgewerkt.
Als alles goed gaat, moet het
schip in februari klaar zijn voor vertrek. Tegen die tijd moet het uitgerust
zijn met 199 bedden, 6 operatiezalen, een labo, scanners, maar ook een groot
auditorium voor opleidingen aan lokale hulpverleners.
De Global Mercy is met zijn
172 meter nog een heel stuk groter dan de 152 meter lange Africa Mercy,
die zijn titel van grootste particuliere ziekenhuisschip hiermee moet afstaan.
EN: To respect the
tight timing, the captain applied the brakes: at exactly 13.30 hrs on Sunday,
the Global Mercy made the last turn on the river Scheldt towards the old city
centre of Antwerp. Numerous spectators gazed at the 174-metre-long ship along
the quays, accompanied by a couple of tugboats from the Port Authority, which
created a festive water curtain.
The new hospital ship will be
moored at the operational headquarters (NOC, quay 602) of the Port Company for
about six months, where it will be completely finished.
If all goes well, the ship should
be ready for departure in February. By then, it should be equipped with 199
beds, 6 operating theatres, a lab, scanners, but also a large auditorium for
training local aid workers.
With its 172 metres, the Global
Mercy is still a lot larger than the 152-metre Africa Mercy, which will
relinquish its title as the largest private hospital ship.
Antwerpen-Dakar
NL: De eerste
reisbestemming van de Global Mercy wordt de Senegalese hoofdstad
Dakar. De lokale bevolking zal er terechtkunnen voor allerhande medische hulp,
zoals het verwijderen van tumoren, tandzorg, enzovoort.
“Onderwijs en gezondheidszorg
zijn hier in het Westen de normaalste zaak van de wereld, maar 5 miljard mensen
hebben geen toegang tot gezondheidszorg”, zegt Bert van Dijk, voorzitter van
Mercy Ships België. “Een groot deel daarvan moeten we situeren in Sub-Saharisch
Afrika, op slechts een paar uur vliegen hiervandaan. We zien daar veel wanhoop.
Maar Mercy Ships heeft intussen al 2,5 miljoen mensen kunnen helpen.”
Volgens Van Dijk zou het schip
aanvankelijk in de Filipijnen worden afgewerkt, maar corona strooide roet in
het eten. Mercy Ships Belgium ging te rade bij zijn trouwe partner Port of
Antwerp of de afwerking niet hier zou kunnen gebeuren. “We hebben geen seconde
getwijfeld”, zegt Rob Smeets, COO van het Havenbedrijf Antwerpen.
“Een ploeg van meer dan twintig
mensen heeft een jaar keihard gewerkt om hier de nodige voorbereidingen te
treffen. We hebben zelfs een miniterminal gebouwd. We zijn dan ook trots dat
de Global Mercy naar hier komt voor zijn afwerking.”
EN: The first
travel destination of the Global Mercy will be Senegal's capital Dakar. The
local population will be able to go there for all kinds of medical assistance,
such as tumor removal, dental care, etc.
"Education and healthcare
are the most normal things in the world here in the West, but 5 billion people
have no access to healthcare," says Bert van Dijk, President of Mercy
Ships Belgium. "A large part of that is in Sub-Saharan Africa, just a few
hours' flight away. We see a lot of despair there. But Mercy Ships has already
been able to help 2.5 million people."
According to Van Dijk, the ship
was initially supposed to be finished in the Philippines, but corona threw a
spanner in the works. Mercy Ships Belgium consulted its loyal partner Port of
Antwerp to see if the finishing touches could be made here. "We did not
hesitate for a second," says Rob Smeets, COO of the Port of Antwerp.
"A team of more than twenty
people have worked extremely hard for a year to make the necessary
preparations. We have even built a mini terminal. So we are proud that the
Global Mercy is coming here for its finishing touches."

NL: Op het
aankomstfeest zondag waren zo’n vijftig lokale bedrijven uitgenodigd. Onder de
aanwezigen spraken we met Yves en Greg Aertssen, van de Stabroekse
aannemersgroep Aertssen.
“We schenken nu al sinds geruime
tijd het budget voor het nieuwjaarscadeau van ons personeel aan Mercy Ships.
Deze organisatie schrijft een mooi verhaal dat enthousiasme opwekt. Het leeft
ook in de Antwerpse gemeenschap”, zegt Greg. “Iedereen gelooft erin”, vult Yves
aan. “We vinden het extra interessant, omdat Mercy Ships in Afrika actief is,
en wij ook in die richting kijken voor onze activiteiten.”
EN: Some fifty
local companies were invited to the arrival party on Sunday. Among those
present, we spoke with Yves and Greg Aertssen, of the Aertssen contractor group
from Stabroek.
"For some time now, we have
been donating the budget for our staff's New Year's gift to Mercy Ships. This
organisation writes a beautiful story that generates enthusiasm. It also lives
in the Antwerp community", says Greg. "Everyone believes in it",
Yves adds. "We find it extra interesting, because Mercy Ships is active in
Africa, and we are also looking in that direction for our activities."
NL: Het splinterieuwe hospitaalschip Global Mercy van Mercy Ships komt naar de
Scheldekaaien! Op zondag 12/09 zal het schip een welkomsttraject varen door de
haven tot aan de Scheldekaaien (zie de kaart hieronder). Het schip zal rond 12.00u passeren
aan het eerste uitkijkpunt bij de Zandvlietsluis en rond 13.30u langs de
laatste drie punten op de kaart varen. MV Global Mercy zal niet aanmeren
aan de Scheldekaaien en vaart aansluitend door naar Kaai 602 in de haven.
EN: Mercy Ships' hospital ship Global Mercy is coming to the Scheldt quays! On Sunday 12/09 the ship will sail a welcome route through the port to the Scheldt quays (see the map below). The ship will pass the first viewpoint at the Zandvlietlock around 12.00 pm and will pass the last three points on the map around 1.30 pm. ondersteuning aan te bieden. Vrijwilligers uit binnen- en buitenland zullen
daar de Global Mercy inrichten en afwerken tot het

inrichting, de installatie van medische apparatuur en IT-systemen maar ook de
bevoorrading van het schip voor haar eerste missie. “Dit unieke
project is een voorlopig hoogtepunt in de samenwerking tussen Port of Antwerp
en Mercy Ships. Met onze steun staan we als Havenbedrijf niet alleen, het
maatschappelijk engagement in de havengemeenschap is zeer groot. Tientallen
bedrijven in onze haven steunen Mercy Ships al structureel en zullen dit ook
doen bij de inrichting van de Global Mercy. Mercy Ships en het prachtige werk
dat ze verrichten liggen na aan het hart van de haven van Antwerpen”, zegt
havenschepen Annick De Ridder.

Mercy Ships and the wonderful work they do are right at the heart of the port of Antwerp," says port alderman Annick De Ridder.

MS Europa van de Duitse rederij Hapag-Lloyd Cruises bracht op dinsdag 17
augustus 2021 opnieuw een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het was het eerste
zeecruiseschip dat na de corona-pauze in de Scheldestad aanmeerde, maar ook het
eerste zeecruiseschip dat aanmeerde aan het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het
Noorderterras.
EN: The luxury cruise
ship MS Europa of the German cruise line Hapag-Lloyd Cruises paid another visit
to Antwerp on Tuesday, 17 August 2021. It was the first sea cruise ship to dock
in the city of Antwerp after the corona break, but also the first sea cruise
ship to dock at the new cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.
NL: Na anderhalf jaar mocht Antwerpen op 17
augustus opnieuw een zeecruiseschip ontvangen. Het 5+ sterrenschip MS Europa
van Hapag-Lloyd Cruises had de eer om als eerste schip terug te komen naar de
stad. Sinds midden juli is hun voltallige vloot opnieuw in de vaart. MS Europa
was daarbij het laatste schip dat opnieuw in zee stak.
EN: NL: On August 17th, after one and a half
years, Antwerp was able to welcome another sea cruise ship. The 5+ star ship MS
Europa of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises had the honour to be the first ship to return to
the city. Since mid-July, their entire fleet has been back in service. MS
Europa was the last ship to take to the sea again.
Cruiseponton
/ Cruise Pontoon
NL: Wat de
cruiseaanloop nog uniek maakt, is dat MS Europa als eerste zeecruiseschip
gebruik gemaakt heeft van het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras. Voorheen
meerden er enkel kleinere schepen aan zoals het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży en het
schoolschip Horyzont II in het voorjaar.
Op het nieuwe cruiseponton wordt
geen gebruik meer gemaakt van een mobiele gangway of loopbrug zoals dat aan het
Zuiderterras het geval was. Omdat het volledige ponton meebeweegt met de
getijden is er geen vraag meer naar een gangway die zichzelf daaraan aanpast.
Vanaf nu gebruiken de schepen hun eigen gangway die ze standaard allemaal aan
boord hebben.
Ondanks de werken aan de kaaien en Het Steen werd er door
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises voor gekozen om aan te meren aan het cruiseponton. Momenteel
kunnen de cruiseschepen nog steeds aanmeren aan het Zuiderterras mochten ze dat
willen. Vanaf midden oktober, wanneer Het Steen zal openen als het toeristische
onthaal van Antwerpen, zullen de cruiseschepen standaard aanmeren aan het
cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.
EN: What makes the cruise call even more
unique is that MS Europa was the first sea cruise ship to use the new cruise
pontoon at the Noorderterras. Previously, only smaller ships moored there, such
as the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży and the school ship Horyzont II in the spring.
On the new cruise pontoon, no mobile gangway is used as was
the case on the Zuiderterras. Because the entire pontoon moves with the tides,
there is no longer any demand for a gangway that adjusts itself accordingly.
From now on, the ships will use their own gangway, which they all have on board
as standard.
Despite the works on the quays and the fortress Het Steen,
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises opted to dock at the cruise pontoon. At the moment, the
cruise ships can still dock at the Zuiderterras if they wish. As from
mid-October, when Het Steen will open as the tourist reception of Antwerp, the
cruise ships will automatically dock at the cruise pontoon at the
Noorderterras.
Drenkeling
op Zee / Man overboard at Sea
NL: De cruiseaanloop werd spijtig genoeg overschaduwd
door een spijtig voorval. In de vroege namiddag op 16 augustus werd er een
reddingsactie opgestart omdat er op MS Europa een man overboord geslagen was.
Het schip was op dat moment onderweg van de Duitse stad Hamburg richting Antwerpen
en bevond zich niet ver van het Nederlandse Waddeneiland Texel.
Het bleek te gaan om man van in de 80 die om een nog
onbekende reden van één van de bovendekken van het schip in het water was
gevallen. Er werd meteen een grote zoekactie opgestart met vijf reddingboten,
twee helikopters, een vliegtuig, een schip van de Kustwacht en nog enkele
andere schepen die in de buurt waren. Door de hoge golven van 5 tot 6 meter was
het echter zeer moeilijk om te zoeken. Na een aantal uur werd de zoekactie
stopgezet omdat de overlevingskans van de man volgens de Kustwacht nihil
geworden was.
EN: The cruise call was overshadowed by an
unfortunate incident. In the early afternoon of August 16th, a rescue operation
was launched because a man had fallen overboard on MS Europa. At that moment,
the ship was en route from the German city of Hamburg to Antwerp and was not
far from the Dutch Wadden Island of Texel.
It turned out to be an 80 year old man who had fallen into
the water from one of the upper decks of the ship for an unknown reason. A
major search operation was immediately launched with five lifeboats, two
helicopters, an aeroplane, a Coastguard vessel and several other vessels in the
vicinity. However, the high waves of 5 to 6 metres made the search very
difficult. After several hours, the search was stopped because the chances of
survival of the man had become zero according to the Coast Guard.

NL: Momenteel staan er nog steeds een aantal
cruiseaanlopen in Antwerpen gepland voor 2021. Het zal enkel nog afwachten
worden of ze ook daadwerkelijk zullen plaatsvinden, want de cruiserederijen

lag van 26 april tot en met 5 mei in het droogdok bij EDR Antwerp Shipyard.
Daar kreeg het schip zowel boven als onder de waterlijn een groot onderhoud en
kreeg het ook een nieuwe laag verf.
Na 10 dagen
in het droogdok kreeg MS SEAVENTURE terug water onder haar kiel. Terwijl de
romp van het schip voorheen bijna volledig wit was is de onderkant van de romp
nu lichtblauw geschilderd in de huiskleuren van de Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises,
waarvoor het schip binnenkort in zee zal steken. In het droogdok verscheen ook
de naam ‘SEAVENTURE’ in reliëf op de boeg.

binnenin het schip. Zo kregen verschillende delen van het schip ondertussen een
nieuwe bekleding.

expedition cruise ship MS SEAVENTURE has been docked at EDR Antwerp Ship Repair
since 16 January 2021. In the past few months, under the supervision of the
Swiss cruise line Scylla Ocean, numerous renovations have been carried out
inside the ship. For example, various parts of the ship have been refurbished.
NL: Op maandag 26 april gingen de werken aan
het schip de tweede fase in. MS SEAVENTURE werd verplaatst naar één van de
droogdokken op het werfterrein en het schip werd meteen uit het water gehaald.
Nu het schip volledig droog staat kan er begonnen worden aan het onderhoud van
de romp en de propellers. Na het algemene onderhoud zal alles onder de
waterlijn een nieuwe verflaag krijgen.
Ook boven de waterlijn zijn er aan de buitenkant van het
schip nog aanpassingen gepland. MS SEAVENTURE is momenteel gehuld in witte
doeken om tijdens het spuiten van de verf geen overspray te hebben. Binnen
enkele dagen zal men namelijk beginnen met de romp te beschilderen in de
huisstijl van VIVA Cruises, zijnde een blauwe romp met een witte bovenbouw. De
schouw zal ook beschilderd worden in twee tinten blauw met een golfpatroon.

EN: On Monday 26 April, the works on the ship
entered the second phase. MS SEAVENTURE was moved to one of the dry docks at
the shipyard and the ship was immediately taken out of the water. Now that the
ship is laying completely dry, maintenance of the hull and propellers can
begin. After the general maintenance, everything below the waterline will get a
new layer of paint.
Above the waterline, adjustments to the outside of the ship
are also planned. MS SEAVENTURE is currently covered in white tarps to avoid

‘Kaailine’, een verwijzing naar het High Line Park in New York, wil de Stad

wandelterrassen, maar project ‘Kaailine’ voorziet een grondige renovatie van de
beide geklasseerde bouwwerken zodat ze nadien opnieuw kunnen stralen in de grandeur
van weleer. Daarbij zullen de terrassen ook vergroend worden met behulp van
grote plantenbakken.
Eerder dit jaar werd aangekondigd
dat het Zuiderterras eerst aan de beurt zou komen voor de renovatie. Spijtig
genoeg werd er na onderzoek opgemerkt dat de kaaimuur daar eerst gestabiliseerd
zal moeten worden. Daardoor werd ervoor gekozen om de focus te verleggen naar
het Noorderterras.
EN: With the
'Kaailine' project, a reference to the High Line Park in New York, the City of
Antwerp wants to upgrade the Noorderterras and Zuiderterras along the Scheldt
quays and make them more attractive again. At the moment graffiti still
dominates both terraces, but the 'Kaailine' project provides for a thorough
renovation of both listed buildings so that they can once again shine in the
grandeur of yesteryear. The terraces will also be made greener with the help of
large plant containers.
Earlier this year, it was
announced that the Zuiderterras would be renovated first. Unfortunately, after
investigation it was noted that the quay wall there will first need to be
stabilised. As a result, it was decided to shift the focus to the Noorderterrase.

zal het Noorderterras veranderd zijn in een groene wandelboulevard. Voor de
vergroening van het Noorderterras werd voor planten gekozen die gedijen in de
buurt van de Schelde met haar brakke water. Er komen grote plantenvakken
waarin mix van grassen zoals verbena of grote pimpernel geplant zal worden, die
overgaan in struiken en heesters met een maximale hoogte van anderhalve meter.
Daarnaast komen er ook zones met planten zoals zeekool, cipressenkruid en
blauwspirea. De plantvakken zijn zo opgebouwd dat ze ook regenwater zullen kunnen
bufferen.
“Omdat de plantvakken langs de
stadszijde staan, blijft het zicht op de Schelde behouden. Het zitmeubilair,
zowel vrijstaand en als onderdeel van de plantvakken, wordt eveneens met zicht
op de Schelde geplaatst”, laat Schepen van Stadsontwikkeling Annick De
Ridder weten. Verder zal er bij de renovatie van de terrassen ook bekeken worden
of de daken deels opengemaakt kunnen worden zodat er meer licht tot op de
kaaien komt.
Als alles goed gaat zullen de werken
aan het Noorderterras starten in de zomer van 2022. Hierdoor zal het
wandelterras ook een tijd afgesloten worden voor het publiek. ‘Kaailine’ maakt
deel uit van het centrale deel van de Scheldekaaien, tussen Noorderterras en
Zuiderterras. Voor dat deel is een ontwerp voor de kaaivlakte in opmaak. De
heraanleg van de kaaien tussen Noorderterras en Steenplein, waarbij ook de
ruimte onder het terras een nieuwe invulling krijgt, staat gepland vanaf het
voorjaar van 2024.

boulevard. To make the Noorderterras greener, plants were chosen that thrive in
the vicinity of the Scheldt with its brackish water. There will be large
planting beds in which a mixture of grasses such as verbena or large burnet
will be planted, which will then change into shrubs and bushes with a maximum
height of one and a half metres. There will also be zones with plants such as
sea kale, cypress herb and bluespirea. The planting beds are constructed in
such a way that they will also be able to buffer rainwater.
"Because the planting beds
are on the city side, the view of the Scheldt is preserved. The seating, both
free-standing and as part of the planting beds, will also be placed with a view
of the Scheldt," says Annick De Ridder, Alderman for Urban Development.
Furthermore, for the renovation of the terraces we will also examine whether
the roofs can be partially opened up so that more light can reach the quays.
If all goes well, work on the
Noorderterras will start in the summer of 2022. As a result, the walking
terrace will be closed off to the public for a while. Kaailine' is part of the
central part of the Scheldt quays, between Noorderterras and Zuiderterras. For
that part, a design for the quay area is in preparation. The reconstruction of
the quays between the Noorderterras and the Steenplein, whereby the space under
the terrace will also be given a new interpretation, is planned from the spring
of 2024.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines bracht op 5 en 6 november 2021 voor de eerste keer een
bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het schip meerde aan aan het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het
Noorderterras.

NL: Met de cruiseaanloop van MS Bolette op 5
en 6 november werd het korte cruiseseizoen van 2021 beëindigd. Antwerpen mocht
dit jaar vijf cruiseaanlopen ontvangen. Gezien de omstandigheden met COIVD-19
is dat geen slecht aantal. Er werden eerst nog enkele extra aanlopen verwacht
maar die werden al snel opnieuw geannuleerd door de rederijen vanwege de steeds
veranderende situatie. Het kan nog steeds zijn dat er aanlopen toegevoegd zullen
worden voor 2021, al achten we die kans wel vrij klein.
EN: With the cruise call of MS Bolette on 5 and
6 November, the short cruise season of 2021 has ended. Antwerp received a total
of five cruise calls this year. Given the circumstances with COIVD-19 that is
not a bad number. Initially, a few extra calls were expected, but these were
soon cancelled again by the cruise lines due to the ever-changing situation. It
is still possible that calls will be added for 2021, although we consider this
probability to be rather low.
NL: MS Bolette was het eerste cruiseschip dat
aanmeerde in Antwerpen sinds de officiële opening van Het Steen als toeristisch
centrum. Toch was het nog niet mogelijk om de cruiseterminal te gebruiken omdat
de verbinding tussen het terminalgebouw en het cruiseponton nog volop afgewerkt
wordt. Van zodra dat in orde is kunnen de passagiers ook in stijl ontvangen
worden in het middeleeuwse fort.
Voor de fotografen was het wel al mogelijk om voor de eerste
keer een cruiseschip te fotograferen vanuit de nieuwe uitkijktoren van Het
Steen. Van daaruit krijg je een knap zicht over het volledige cruiseponton.

NL: Het mag dan wel de allereerst aanloop zijn
van het schip als ‘MS Bolette’, toch is het niet de alleerste keer dat het
schip in Antwerpen te zien is. In 2001 lag het schip al twee keer aangemeerd in
Antwerpen als MS Amsterdam van Holland America Line.
In 2020 kocht Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines het schip nadat de
Carnival Corp., het moederbedrijf van Holland America Line, door de coronapandemie
versneld afscheid nam van maar liefst 19 cruiseschepen. Ook haar zusterschip MS
Rotterdam werd gekocht door Fred. Olsen. Dat schip kreeg de naam Borealis.
Het ziet ernaar uit dat MS Bolette ook het cruiseseizoen van
2022 zal mogen openen.

NL: Na een grondige
restauratie opent Het Steen de poorten voor het grote publiek op vrijdag 22
oktober 2021. Als toeristisch onthaalcentrum is het de ideale startplaats om
Antwerpen te ontdekken. Het oudste bewaarde gebouw van Antwerpen herbergt een
bezoekerscentrum, een nieuwe cruiseterminal, panoramisch dakterras en het
belevingsparcours The Antwerp Story.
EN: After a thorough
restoration, Het Steen opens its doors to the general public on Friday 22
October 2021. As a tourist reception centre, it is the ideal starting point for
discovering Antwerp. The oldest preserved building in Antwerp houses a visitor
centre, a new cruise terminal, panoramic roof terrace and the experience trail The
Antwerp Story.
NL: Het Steen kende de voorbije 800 jaar
veel functies: van burcht tot gevangenis en van tehuis tot museum. Koen Kennis,
schepen voor toerisme: “Sinds 2008 bleef het gesloten voor het brede publiek,
waardoor een hele generatie Antwerpenaren opgroeide zonder het oudste gebouw
van de stad ooit te hebben betreden. Ik heb dat altijd erg jammer gevonden. Met
deze restauratie krijgen de Sinjoren ‘hun’ Steen nu terug, en bovendien zwaaien
de poorten ook open voor bezoekers aan de stad. Het Steen maakte immers zoveel
mee dat het de perfecte plek is om het verhaal van de stad te vertellen.”

over the past 800 years: from fortress to prison and from home to museum. Koen
Kennis, alderman for tourism: "Since 2008, it has remained closed to the
general public, causing a whole generation of Antwerp citizens to grow up
without ever having entered the city's oldest building. I have always found
that a great pity. With this restoration, the ‘Sinjoren’ will now get 'their' Steen
back, and moreover, the gates will swing open for visitors to the city. After
all, the Steen has been through so much that it is the perfect place to tell
the city's story."
Het toeristisch centrum / All things tourism
NL: In het vernieuwde Steen is alles wat
met toerisme in Antwerpen te maken heeft gecentraliseerd. Zo verhuisde de toeristische
dienst en de stadswinkel van de Grote Markt naar het middeleeuwse fort. Er werd
ook een belevingsparcours gecreëerd met de naam The Antwerp Story. Tijdens dit interactieve
parcours kom je in een notendop te weten wat Antwerpen zo speciaal maakt. Hiervoor
wordt onder meer gebruik gemaakt van de laatste technologieën om zowel de
geschiedenis als het heden tot leven te laten komen.
EN: In the renovated Steen, everything
to do with tourism in Antwerp is centralised. The tourist information centre
and the city shop have moved from the Grote Markt to the medieval fortress. An
experience trail called The Antwerp Story has also been created. During this
interactive route you will find out in a nutshell what makes Antwerp so
special. The latest technologies are used to bring both history and the present
to life.
Cruise
Terminal
NL: Onderaan in het gebouw, op het
niveau van de kaai, werd er een nieuwe cruiseterminal gecreëerd. De passagiers
zullen ontvangen worden in een ruime hal waar plaats is voor 400 personen. Er
werd ook een aparte ruimte voorzien om de security-check te doen. Het geheel zal
uiteindelijk naadloos aansluiten op het nieuwe cruiseponton. Momenteel wordt er
nog de laatste hand gelegd aan de kaaien tussen de cruiseterminal en het ponton.
EN: In the lower half of the building,
on the level of the quay, a new cruise terminal was created. Passengers will be
welcomed in a spacious hall with room for 400 people. There is also a separate
area for the security check. The whole space will eventually connect seamlessly
to the new cruise pontoon. Currently, the finishing touches are being added to
the quay between the cruise terminal and the pontoon.
Uitkijktoren
/ Observation tower
NL: De nieuwe aanbouw van Het Steen
bevat ook een gloednieuwe uitkijktoren. De toren zal, op slechts enkele dagen
na, het volledige jaar door gratis te bezoeken zijn tussen 10:00 en 22:00u. Vanop
het hoogste punt krijg je een prachtig uitzicht over de Schelde. Ook wanneer er
een cruiseschip aangemeerd ligt aan het cruiseponton zal dat vanop de toren
heel goed te zien zijn. Naast de toren bevindt zich ook nog een dakterras dat
vrij toegankelijk is.
EN: The new extension to Het Steen also

can be visited free of charge throughout the year between 10:00 and 22:00. From
the highest point, you will have a magnificent view over the river Scheldt.
When a cruise ship is moored at the cruise pontoon, this will be clearly

accessible.

Hospital Ship MV Global Mercy arrives in Antwerpen

Mercy, het grootste private ziekenhuisschip ter wereld, is op zondag 12
september aangekomen in Antwerpen. Een evenement dat honderden belangstellende
toeschouwers naar de kaaien lokte. Het nieuwe schip van Mercy Ships zal in de
haven van Antwerpen gedurende een half jaar worden afgewerkt. Daarna vertrekt

Mercy, het grootste private ziekenhuisschip ter wereld, is op zondag 12
september aangekomen in Antwerpen. Een evenement dat honderden belangstellende
toeschouwers naar de kaaien lokte. Het nieuwe schip van Mercy Ships zal in de
haven van Antwerpen gedurende een half jaar worden afgewerkt. Daarna vertrekt
het voor een jarenlange reis langs arme landen om er mensen gratis
gezondheidszorg aan te bieden.
Grootste particuliere ziekenhuisschip ter wereld / World's
largest private hospital ship
NL: Voor de strakke
timing te respecteren ging de kapitein nog even op de rem staan: zondag stipt
om 13.30u nam de Global Mercy feilloos de laatste Scheldebocht
richting het oude stadscentrum van Antwerpen. Talloze kijklustigen vergaapten
zich langs de kaaien aan het 174 meter lange schip, begeleid door een paar
slepers van het Havenbedrijf, die voor een feestelijk watergordijn zorgden.
Het nieuwe ziekenhuisschip zal
ongeveer een half jaar lang blijven liggen aan het operationele hoofdkwartier
(NOC, kaai 602) van het Havenbedrijf, waar het helemaal wordt afgewerkt.
Als alles goed gaat, moet het
schip in februari klaar zijn voor vertrek. Tegen die tijd moet het uitgerust
zijn met 199 bedden, 6 operatiezalen, een labo, scanners, maar ook een groot
auditorium voor opleidingen aan lokale hulpverleners.
De Global Mercy is met zijn
172 meter nog een heel stuk groter dan de 152 meter lange Africa Mercy,
die zijn titel van grootste particuliere ziekenhuisschip hiermee moet afstaan.
EN: To respect the
tight timing, the captain applied the brakes: at exactly 13.30 hrs on Sunday,
the Global Mercy made the last turn on the river Scheldt towards the old city
centre of Antwerp. Numerous spectators gazed at the 174-metre-long ship along
the quays, accompanied by a couple of tugboats from the Port Authority, which
created a festive water curtain.
The new hospital ship will be
moored at the operational headquarters (NOC, quay 602) of the Port Company for
about six months, where it will be completely finished.
If all goes well, the ship should
be ready for departure in February. By then, it should be equipped with 199
beds, 6 operating theatres, a lab, scanners, but also a large auditorium for
training local aid workers.
With its 172 metres, the Global
Mercy is still a lot larger than the 152-metre Africa Mercy, which will
relinquish its title as the largest private hospital ship.
Antwerpen-Dakar
NL: De eerste
reisbestemming van de Global Mercy wordt de Senegalese hoofdstad
Dakar. De lokale bevolking zal er terechtkunnen voor allerhande medische hulp,
zoals het verwijderen van tumoren, tandzorg, enzovoort.
“Onderwijs en gezondheidszorg
zijn hier in het Westen de normaalste zaak van de wereld, maar 5 miljard mensen
hebben geen toegang tot gezondheidszorg”, zegt Bert van Dijk, voorzitter van
Mercy Ships België. “Een groot deel daarvan moeten we situeren in Sub-Saharisch
Afrika, op slechts een paar uur vliegen hiervandaan. We zien daar veel wanhoop.
Maar Mercy Ships heeft intussen al 2,5 miljoen mensen kunnen helpen.”
Volgens Van Dijk zou het schip
aanvankelijk in de Filipijnen worden afgewerkt, maar corona strooide roet in
het eten. Mercy Ships Belgium ging te rade bij zijn trouwe partner Port of
Antwerp of de afwerking niet hier zou kunnen gebeuren. “We hebben geen seconde
getwijfeld”, zegt Rob Smeets, COO van het Havenbedrijf Antwerpen.
“Een ploeg van meer dan twintig
mensen heeft een jaar keihard gewerkt om hier de nodige voorbereidingen te
treffen. We hebben zelfs een miniterminal gebouwd. We zijn dan ook trots dat
de Global Mercy naar hier komt voor zijn afwerking.”
EN: The first
travel destination of the Global Mercy will be Senegal's capital Dakar. The
local population will be able to go there for all kinds of medical assistance,
such as tumor removal, dental care, etc.
"Education and healthcare
are the most normal things in the world here in the West, but 5 billion people
have no access to healthcare," says Bert van Dijk, President of Mercy
Ships Belgium. "A large part of that is in Sub-Saharan Africa, just a few
hours' flight away. We see a lot of despair there. But Mercy Ships has already
been able to help 2.5 million people."
According to Van Dijk, the ship
was initially supposed to be finished in the Philippines, but corona threw a
spanner in the works. Mercy Ships Belgium consulted its loyal partner Port of
Antwerp to see if the finishing touches could be made here. "We did not
hesitate for a second," says Rob Smeets, COO of the Port of Antwerp.
"A team of more than twenty
people have worked extremely hard for a year to make the necessary
preparations. We have even built a mini terminal. So we are proud that the
Global Mercy is coming here for its finishing touches."

aanwezigen spraken we met Yves en Greg Aertssen, van de Stabroekse
aannemersgroep Aertssen.
“We schenken nu al sinds geruime
tijd het budget voor het nieuwjaarscadeau van ons personeel aan Mercy Ships.
Deze organisatie schrijft een mooi verhaal dat enthousiasme opwekt. Het leeft
ook in de Antwerpse gemeenschap”, zegt Greg. “Iedereen gelooft erin”, vult Yves
aan. “We vinden het extra interessant, omdat Mercy Ships in Afrika actief is,
en wij ook in die richting kijken voor onze activiteiten.”

local companies were invited to the arrival party on Sunday. Among those
present, we spoke with Yves and Greg Aertssen, of the Aertssen contractor group
from Stabroek.
"For some time now, we have
been donating the budget for our staff's New Year's gift to Mercy Ships. This
organisation writes a beautiful story that generates enthusiasm. It also lives
in the Antwerp community", says Greg. "Everyone believes in it",
Yves adds. "We find it extra interesting, because Mercy Ships is active in
Africa, and we are also looking in that direction for our activities."

NL: Het splinterieuwe hospitaalschip Global Mercy van Mercy Ships komt naar de
Scheldekaaien! Op zondag 12/09 zal het schip een welkomsttraject varen door de
haven tot aan de Scheldekaaien (zie de kaart hieronder). Het schip zal rond 12.00u passeren
aan het eerste uitkijkpunt bij de Zandvlietsluis en rond 13.30u langs de
laatste drie punten op de kaart varen. MV Global Mercy zal niet aanmeren
aan de Scheldekaaien en vaart aansluitend door naar Kaai 602 in de haven.

bevoorrading van het schip voor haar eerste missie. “Dit unieke

en Mercy Ships. Met onze steun staan we als Havenbedrijf niet alleen, het
maatschappelijk engagement in de havengemeenschap is zeer groot. Tientallen

MS Europa in Antwerpen - 1ste Aanloop aan Cruiseponton / 1st Cruise Call at Cruise Pontoon

MS Europa van de Duitse rederij Hapag-Lloyd Cruises bracht op dinsdag 17
augustus 2021 opnieuw een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het was het eerste
zeecruiseschip dat na de corona-pauze in de Scheldestad aanmeerde, maar ook het
eerste zeecruiseschip dat aanmeerde aan het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het
Noorderterras.
EN: The luxury cruise
ship MS Europa of the German cruise line Hapag-Lloyd Cruises paid another visit
to Antwerp on Tuesday, 17 August 2021. It was the first sea cruise ship to dock
in the city of Antwerp after the corona break, but also the first sea cruise
ship to dock at the new cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.
NL: Na anderhalf jaar mocht Antwerpen op 17
augustus opnieuw een zeecruiseschip ontvangen. Het 5+ sterrenschip MS Europa
van Hapag-Lloyd Cruises had de eer om als eerste schip terug te komen naar de
stad. Sinds midden juli is hun voltallige vloot opnieuw in de vaart. MS Europa
was daarbij het laatste schip dat opnieuw in zee stak.
EN: NL: On August 17th, after one and a half
years, Antwerp was able to welcome another sea cruise ship. The 5+ star ship MS
Europa of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises had the honour to be the first ship to return to
the city. Since mid-July, their entire fleet has been back in service. MS
Europa was the last ship to take to the sea again.
Cruiseponton
/ Cruise Pontoon
NL: Wat de
cruiseaanloop nog uniek maakt, is dat MS Europa als eerste zeecruiseschip
gebruik gemaakt heeft van het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras. Voorheen
meerden er enkel kleinere schepen aan zoals het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży en het
schoolschip Horyzont II in het voorjaar.
Op het nieuwe cruiseponton wordt
geen gebruik meer gemaakt van een mobiele gangway of loopbrug zoals dat aan het
Zuiderterras het geval was. Omdat het volledige ponton meebeweegt met de
getijden is er geen vraag meer naar een gangway die zichzelf daaraan aanpast.
Vanaf nu gebruiken de schepen hun eigen gangway die ze standaard allemaal aan
boord hebben.
Ondanks de werken aan de kaaien en Het Steen werd er door
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises voor gekozen om aan te meren aan het cruiseponton. Momenteel
kunnen de cruiseschepen nog steeds aanmeren aan het Zuiderterras mochten ze dat
willen. Vanaf midden oktober, wanneer Het Steen zal openen als het toeristische
onthaal van Antwerpen, zullen de cruiseschepen standaard aanmeren aan het
cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.
EN: What makes the cruise call even more
unique is that MS Europa was the first sea cruise ship to use the new cruise
pontoon at the Noorderterras. Previously, only smaller ships moored there, such
as the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży and the school ship Horyzont II in the spring.
On the new cruise pontoon, no mobile gangway is used as was
the case on the Zuiderterras. Because the entire pontoon moves with the tides,
there is no longer any demand for a gangway that adjusts itself accordingly.
From now on, the ships will use their own gangway, which they all have on board
as standard.
Despite the works on the quays and the fortress Het Steen,
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises opted to dock at the cruise pontoon. At the moment, the
cruise ships can still dock at the Zuiderterras if they wish. As from
mid-October, when Het Steen will open as the tourist reception of Antwerp, the
cruise ships will automatically dock at the cruise pontoon at the
Noorderterras.
Drenkeling
op Zee / Man overboard at Sea
NL: De cruiseaanloop werd spijtig genoeg overschaduwd
door een spijtig voorval. In de vroege namiddag op 16 augustus werd er een
reddingsactie opgestart omdat er op MS Europa een man overboord geslagen was.
Het schip was op dat moment onderweg van de Duitse stad Hamburg richting Antwerpen
en bevond zich niet ver van het Nederlandse Waddeneiland Texel.
Het bleek te gaan om man van in de 80 die om een nog
onbekende reden van één van de bovendekken van het schip in het water was
gevallen. Er werd meteen een grote zoekactie opgestart met vijf reddingboten,
twee helikopters, een vliegtuig, een schip van de Kustwacht en nog enkele
andere schepen die in de buurt waren. Door de hoge golven van 5 tot 6 meter was
het echter zeer moeilijk om te zoeken. Na een aantal uur werd de zoekactie
stopgezet omdat de overlevingskans van de man volgens de Kustwacht nihil
geworden was.
EN: The cruise call was overshadowed by an
unfortunate incident. In the early afternoon of August 16th, a rescue operation
was launched because a man had fallen overboard on MS Europa. At that moment,
the ship was en route from the German city of Hamburg to Antwerp and was not
far from the Dutch Wadden Island of Texel.
It turned out to be an 80 year old man who had fallen into
the water from one of the upper decks of the ship for an unknown reason. A
major search operation was immediately launched with five lifeboats, two
helicopters, an aeroplane, a Coastguard vessel and several other vessels in the
vicinity. However, the high waves of 5 to 6 metres made the search very
difficult. After several hours, the search was stopped because the chances of
survival of the man had become zero according to the Coast Guard.

NL: Momenteel staan er nog steeds een aantal
cruiseaanlopen in Antwerpen gepland voor 2021. Het zal enkel nog afwachten
worden of ze ook daadwerkelijk zullen plaatsvinden, want de cruiserederijen
moet nog regelmatig hun vaarschema volledig omgooien door de constant veranderende
regels omtrent corona.
Als alles goed gaat zal MS Amera van Phoenix Reisen op 23
september een bezoek brengen aan Antwerpen. Voor de laatste info over de

NL: MS Seaventure, het nieuwste
cruiseschip van de Zwitserse rederij Scylla Ocean, straalt in haar nieuwe
kleuren. Tijdens een droogdokperiode bij EDR Antwerp Shipyard werd het schip
beschilderd in de huisstijl van de Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises die het schip
chartert.

ship of the Swiss cruise line Scylla Ocean, shines in her new colours. During a
dry-docking period at EDR Antwerp Shipyard, the ship was painted in the house
style of the German shipping company VIVA Cruises, which charters the ship.
NL: Het expeditiecruiseschip MS SEAVENTURE
lag van 26 april tot en met 5 mei in het droogdok bij EDR Antwerp Shipyard.
Daar kreeg het schip zowel boven als onder de waterlijn een groot onderhoud en
kreeg het ook een nieuwe laag verf.
Na 10 dagen
in het droogdok kreeg MS SEAVENTURE terug water onder haar kiel. Terwijl de
romp van het schip voorheen bijna volledig wit was is de onderkant van de romp
nu lichtblauw geschilderd in de huiskleuren van de Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises,
waarvoor het schip binnenkort in zee zal steken. In het droogdok verscheen ook
de naam ‘SEAVENTURE’ in reliëf op de boeg.
EN: The expedition cruise ship MS SEAVENTURE was in dry dock at EDR Antwerp Shipyard from 26 April to 5 May. There the ship received major maintenance above and below the waterline and was also given a new layer of paint.
After 10 days in dry-dock, MS SEAVENTURE got water under her keel again. NL: MS SEAVENTURE, het nieuwste cruiseschip van de
Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises, ging op maandag 26 april in het droogdok voor
onderhoud en schilderwerken. Binnen 10 à 12 dagen zal het schip stralen in de
huiskleuren van VIVA Cruises.

eerder berichtte, sinds 16 januari 2021 aangemeerd bij de scheepswerf EDR
Antwerp Ship Repair. Daar werden de voorbije maanden, onder toezicht van de
Zwitserse cruise rederij Scylla Ocean, talrijke vernieuwingen doorgevoerd
binnenin het schip. Zo kregen verschillende delen van het schip ondertussen een
nieuwe bekleding.
EN: As we reported here earlier, the
expedition cruise ship MS SEAVENTURE has been docked at EDR Antwerp Ship Repair
since 16 January 2021. In the past few months, under the supervision of the
Swiss cruise line Scylla Ocean, numerous renovations have been carried out
inside the ship. For example, various parts of the ship have been refurbished.
NL: Op maandag 26 april gingen de werken aan
het schip de tweede fase in. MS SEAVENTURE werd verplaatst naar één van de
droogdokken op het werfterrein en het schip werd meteen uit het water gehaald.
Nu het schip volledig droog staat kan er begonnen worden aan het onderhoud van
de romp en de propellers. Na het algemene onderhoud zal alles onder de
waterlijn een nieuwe verflaag krijgen.
Ook boven de waterlijn zijn er aan de buitenkant van het
schip nog aanpassingen gepland. MS SEAVENTURE is momenteel gehuld in witte
doeken om tijdens het spuiten van de verf geen overspray te hebben. Binnen
enkele dagen zal men namelijk beginnen met de romp te beschilderen in de
huisstijl van VIVA Cruises, zijnde een blauwe romp met een witte bovenbouw. De
schouw zal ook beschilderd worden in twee tinten blauw met een golfpatroon.

EN: On Monday 26 April, the works on the ship
entered the second phase. MS SEAVENTURE was moved to one of the dry docks at
the shipyard and the ship was immediately taken out of the water. Now that the
ship is laying completely dry, maintenance of the hull and propellers can
begin. After the general maintenance, everything below the waterline will get a
new layer of paint.
Above the waterline, adjustments to the outside of the ship
are also planned. MS SEAVENTURE is currently covered in white tarps to avoid
overspray during the painting process. In a few days, they will start painting
the hull in the house style of VIVA Cruises, being a blue hull and white
upperstructure. The funnel will also be painted in two shades of blue with a
wave pattern.
