nieuwe Engelse rederij Ambassador Cruise Line. De rederij is de herrijzenis van
Cruise & Maritime Voyages, die door de Coronacrisis failliet ging. MS
Ambition kwam in 2022 bij hun vloot en was voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen te
zien op 19 oktober 2023.
Met in totaal 23 zeecruiseaanlopen en rond 16.000 passagiers was
2023 een mooi cruisejaar. Het lijkt erop dat de cruise-industrie zich na enkele
moeilijke jaren terug gestabiliseerd heeft. Er kwamen 17 verschillende schepen
naar de Scheldestad van 16 verschillende rederijen en in totaal werden er 36
ligdagen geregistreerd.

UK cruise line Ambassador Cruise Line. The cruise line is the resurrection of
Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which went bankrupt due to the Corona crisis. MS
Ambition joined their fleet in 2022 and was first seen in Antwerp on 19 October
2023.
With a total of 23 sea cruise calls and around 16.000 passengers,
2023 was a good cruise season. It seems the cruise industry has stabilised
again after a few difficult years. 17 different ships from 16 different cruise
lines came to the city, accounting for a total of 36 berth days.

Opnieuw in Antwerpen / After 24 Years Back in Antwerp
NL: Met haar paarse livrei is het schip een opvallende
gast in de stad. Door de jaren heen heeft het schip al met 5 verschillende
huisstijlen rondgevaren. In 1999 kwam het schip in de vaart voor Festival
Cruises als MS Mistral. Nog voor haar allereerst reis, of Maiden Voyage, was
het schip eind juni 1999 voor enkele dagen te gast in Antwerpen. Het eerste
nieuwbouwschip van de rederij werd in de Scheldestad voorgesteld aan de pers en
de reisagenten. Op 17 juli startte MS Mistral haar 7-daagse Maiden Voyage vanuit
Genua.
Na het faillissement van Festival Cruises in 2004 werd het
schip gekocht door de Spaanse rederij Ibero Cruceros als MS Grand Mistral. Als
onderdeel van de Carnival Cooperation werd in 2014 besloten dat Ibero Cruceros
volledig zou samengaan met Costa Cruises. Hierdoor werd het schip omgedoopt tot
Costa neoRiviera. Na enkele jaren bij Costa werd het schip doorgegeven aan hun
dochterrederij AIDA Cruises als MS AIDAmira waarvoor het cruises naar Afrika
voer.
In april 2022 werd het schip gekocht door Ambassador Cruise
Line. Vanaf september 2022 werd het schip voor 6 maanden gecharterd door de
Schotse Regering om te dienen als tijdelijke onderkomst voor Oekraïense
vluchtelingen in Glasgow. Op 11 mei 2023 werd het schip uiteindelijk gedoopt in
Newcastle. Op 19 oktober 2023 kwam het schip na 24 jaar terug naar Antwerpen,
dit keer voor de eerste keer als MS Ambition.
Oorspronkelijk zou MS Ambition het cruiseseizoen van 2023
afsluiten met haar aanloop op 9 en 10 december. Op het laatste moment werd
echter beslist om het schip op 12 en 13 december opnieuw naar de Scheldestad te
sturen. Bij het tweede schip van de rederij, MS Ambience, werd tijdens een
gepland werfbezoek in Bremerhaven schade ontdekt aan een schroefas waardoor het
schip tot begin januari in het droogdok moet blijven. Om de gedupeerde
passagiers tegemoet te komen werden de cruises van MS Ambition aangepast. Er
werd beslist om Hamburg in de volgende cruise te vervangen door Antwerpen.
Hierdoor heeft MS Ambition maar liefst 3 keer achterelkaar heen en weer gevaren
tussen Antwerpen en Tilbury in Engeland.
EN: With her purple livery, the ship is a
striking guest in thr city. Over the years, the ship has sailed around with 5
different house styles. In 1999, the ship entered service for Festival Cruises
as MS Mistral. Even before her Maiden Voyage the ship visited Antwerp for a few
days at the end of June 1999. The cruise line’s first new-build ship was
presented to the press and travel agents at the Scheldt Quays. On 17 July, MS
Mistral started her 7-day Maiden Voyage from Genua.
Following the bankruptcy of Festival Cruises in 2004, the
ship was bought by Spanish cruise line Ibero Cruceros as MS Grand Mistral. As
part of the Carnival Cooperation, it was decided in 2014 that Ibero Cruceros
would fully merge with Costa Cruises. As a result, the ship was renamed Costa
neoRiviera. After several years with Costa, the ship was passed on to their
subsidiary AIDA Cruises as MS AIDAmira for which it sailed cruises to Africa.
In April 2022, the ship was bought by Ambassador Cruise
Line. From September 2022, the ship was chartered for six months by the
Scottish Government to serve as a temporary shelter for Ukrainian refugees in
Glasgow. On 11 May 2023, the ship was finally christened in Newcastle. On 19
October 2023, the ship returned to Antwerp after 24 years, this time for the
first time as MS Ambition.
Originally, MS Ambition was supposed to close the 2023
cruise season with her call on 9 and 10 December. However, a last-minute
decision was made to send the ship to Antwerp again on 12 and 13 December. On
the cruise line’s second ship, MS Ambience, damage to a propeller shaft was
discovered during a planned visit at the shipyard in Bremerhaven, requiring the
ship to remain in dry dock until early January. To accommodate affected
passengers, MS Ambition's cruises were adjusted. It was decided to replace Hamburg
with Antwerp in the next cruise. As
a result, MS Ambition sailed back and forth between Antwerp and Tilbury in
England as many as three times in a row.
NL: Ook in 2024 staat MS Ambition verschillende
keren gepland voor een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Momenteel staan er in totaal 24
zeecruiseaanlopen gepland en zullen 5 cruiseschepen voor de eerste keer naar

NL: Het Noorderterras en de bijbehorende
geklasseerde hangars aan de cruiseterminal worden de komende jaren
gerestaureerd. Hierdoor zal het wandelterras tot het voorjaar van 2025
afgesloten worden. Naast de restauratie zal het terras ook vergroend worden met
plantenbakken met wilde grassen en struiken.
EN: The walking terrace ‘Noorderterras’ and
associated listed hangars at the cruise terminal will be restored over the next
few years. As a result, the
walkway terrace will be closed until the spring of 2025. In addition to the

NL:Het Noorderterras en de aangrenzende hangars
ter hoogte van de cruiseterminal zijn in behoorlijk slechte staat. Enkele jaren
geleden werden er om veiligheidsredenen al noodherstellingen uitgevoerd aan de
daken. Nu start de grondige renovatie en vooral restauratie van de geklasseerde
hangars.
In totaal wordt 9 miljoen euro uitgetrokken om het
wandelterras, de hangars en de omgeving in ere te herstellen. De originele façades
van de hangars aan de kant van de Jordaenskaai worden volledig gerestaureerd en
de ontbrekende elementen worden nagemaakt in de originele vorm. De
oorspronkelijk kleur, zijnde een midden-grijstint, zal terug zichtbaar gemaakt
worden. De lichtstraten in de daken zullen ook verder opengemaakt worden zodat
het licht de kaaivlakte beter bereikt. Er wordt ook akoestische isolatie
voorzien om het galmen onder de hangars tegen te gaan. Op kaainiveau zullen de
restanten van de oude burchtmuur zichtbaar gemaakt worden tot op een diepte van
2,5 meter. Er zullen ook kleinere exporuimtes en paviljoenen voor de jeugd
voorzien worden.
EN: The Noorderterras and adjacent hangars
near the cruise terminal are in pretty bad shape. Several years ago, emergency
repairs were already made to the roofs for safety reasons. Now the thorough
renovation and especially restoration of the listed hangars is starting.
A total of 9 million euros will be allocated to restore the terrace,
the hangars and the surrounding area. The original facades of the hangars on
the side of the Jordaenskaai will be fully restored and the missing elements
recreated in their original form. The
original color, being a mid-gray tone, will be made visible again. The
skylights in the roofs will also be opened up further so that the light reaches
the quayside better. Acoustic insulation will be provided to prevent
reverberation under the hangars. At quay level, the remains of the old
castle wall will be made visible to a depth of 2.5 meters. Smaller exhibition spaces and pavilions for youth
will also be provided.
NL: Het terras zelf wordt ook grondig
onderhanden genomen. De staalplaat wordt tot op het ruwe staal blootgelegd
waarna ze bewerkt wordt en er een nieuwe antislip laag op wordt aangebracht.
De balustrades worden ook vervangen en krijgen bovenaan een houten leunrand. De
grootste verandering wordt de inrichting van het terras zelf. Er zullen
namelijk grote plantvakken met siergrassen, vaste planten en heesters komen. De
plantensoorten die hiervoor gebruikt zullen worden, werden speciaal voor het
zilte klimaat aan de Schelde gekozen. Er wordt ook wateropvang voorzien van de
afdaken, zodat dat regenwater gebruikt kan worden voor de planten op het
terras.
Om het extra gewicht van de planten te kunnen dragen wordt
het wandelterras langs onder extra verstevigd. Naast de planten zullen er ook
extra trappen voorzien worden die de verbinding met de kaaivlakte maken. Het
project kreeg de naam ‘Kaailine’, wat geïnspireerd is op de ‘Highline’ in New
York. Daar werd een oude verhoogde spoorwegbedding omgevormd tot een park.

after which it will be treated and a new anti-slip coating applied. The
railings will also be replaced and get a wooden handrail at the top. The
biggest change will be the layout of the terrace itself. There will be large
planting beds with ornamental grasses, perennials and shrubs. The plant species
that will be used for this were specially chosen for the salty climate at the river
Scheldt. Water collection will also be provided from the canopies so that that
rainwater can be used for the plants on the terrace.
To support the extra weight of the plants, the walking
terrace will be reinforced along the bottom. In addition to the plants, additional steps will be provided to connect to
the quay terrace. The project was named "Kaailine," which was
inspired by the "Highline" in New York. There, an old elevated
railroad bed was transformed into a park.

september afgesloten voor de start van de werken. De restauratie van de hangars
en het wandelterras zullen duren tot het voorjaar van 2025. Tot die tijd zal
enkel het voorste deel van het terras aan de kant van Het Steen, met de stenen
balustrade, toegankelijk zijn voor het publiek. Na de restauratie starten aansluitend
de werken aan de kaaivlakte tussen het Steenplein en het Noorderterras. Het
volledige project staat gepland om opgeleverd te worden in het voorjaar van
2027. Wie foto’s komt nemen van de cruiseschepen zal zich dus de komende jaren
wat moeten behelpen.
EN: The North Terrace was closed on Monday,
September 18, for the start of works. The restoration of the hangars and the
walking terrace will last until spring 2025. Until then, only the front part of
the terrace on the side of Het Steen, with the stone balustrade, will be
accessible to the public. After the restoration, works on the quay area between

Antwerp for the last time on September 18 and 19, 2023. The ship will visit the

Noorderterras na een zwaaimanoeuvre voor het Zuiderterras. Het was de vierde
keer dat het kleurrijke cruiseschip te zien was in Antwerpen, maar het was dit
keer ook de laatste keer. Begin januari 2023 kondigde de Duitse rederij AIDA
Cruises namelijk aan dat het schip verkocht werd.

Noorderterras around 09:30 on Monday morning (18/09) after turning in front of the
Zuiderterras. It was the fourth time the colourful cruise ship could be seen in
Antwerp, but this time it was also the last. In early January 2023 the German cruise
line AIDA Cruises announced that the ship was being sold.
Laatste kleine schip / Last small ship
NL: Na AIDAcara en AIDAvita verlaat met de verkoop van AIDAaura
het laatste kleine schip de vloot van AIDA. De drie schepen werden de laatste
jaren ingezet voor het ‘AIDA Selection’ programma. Tijdens die cruises worden
de minder gangbare havens bezocht. Hiertoe behoorde ook Antwerpen. Ondanks het
feit dat AIDA tussen 2010 en 2012 met verschillende schepen van de grotere
Sphinx-Klasse de stad bezocht, werd uiteindelijk door de rederij besloten dat
de schepen te groot waren om Antwerpen te blijven bezoeken. Hierdoor is de kans
klein dat AIDA de komende jaren nog in Antwerpen te zien zal zijn. Het AIDA
Selection-concept wordt wel overgenomen door de andere grotere schepen, maar
verschillende havens zullen daarmee niet meer bezocht kunnen worden.
EN: After AIDAcara and AIDAvita, the sale of AIDAaura marks the
last small ship leaving AIDA's fleet. The three ships were used in recent years
for the 'AIDA Selection' program. During those cruises the less common ports

3 Year World Cruise
NL: Ondertussen is ook de koper van het schip bekend. De Griekse
rederij Miray Cruises heeft AIDAaura gekocht om er een 3-jaar-durende
wereldcruise mee te organiseren. Met hun nieuwe rederij ‘Life At Sea Cruises’
zal het schip, dat omgedoopt wordt tot MS Lara, maar liefst 382 havens bezoeken
in 140 landen en 7 continenten. De prijs voor dit avontuur start bij 77.026
Dollar. De cruise start op 1 november 2023 in Istanbul en eindigt op 1 november
2026 ook weer in de stad na 1059 dagen.
Het vaarplan werd al enkele keren aangepast maar momenteel
staat ook Antwerpen tussen de te bezoeken havens. MS Lara zou Antwerpen
bezoeken op 2 & 3 juni 2026, tegen het einde van de wereldcruise.

Wereldcruise / Academic World Cruise
NL: Elk jaar organiseert Semester At Sea twee
wereldcruises: één in het voorjaar en één in de herfst. De vertrekhaven van de
herfstcruise was oorspronkelijk Amsterdam, maar die werd om logistieke redenen
aangepast naar Antwerpen.
MS World Odyssey vertrekt van hieruit op een bijna vier
maand durende reis richting Bangkok in Thailand. Onderweg worden 10
verschillende bestemmingen bezocht waar het schip telkens verschillende dagen
zal blijven liggen. Vanuit Antwerpen zet het schip rechtstreeks koers naar
Casablanca in Marokko. Na enkele stops in de Middellandse Zee gaat het via het
Suezkanaal richting Dubai om dan via Indië verder richting Zuidoost-Azië te
varen. Op de kaart hieronder kan je het volledige
vaarschema bekijken.Voor elke haven werd ook een back-up haven
uitgezocht, mocht het schip door onvoorziene omstandigheden ergens niet kunnen
aanmeren.
EN: Every year Semester At Sea organises two
world cruises: one in the spring and one in the fall. The departure port for
the fall cruise was originally Amsterdam, but it was changed to Antwerp for
logistical reasons.
MS World Odyssey departs from Antwerp on a nearly four-month
long voyage to Bangkok, Thailand. Along the way, 10 different destinations will
be visited where the ship will stay for several days each time. From Antwerp,
the ship sets sail directly for Casablanca in Morocco. After a few stops in the
Mediterranean Sea, it will head for Dubai via the Suez Canal before continuing
on to Southeast Asia via India. You can see the full
sailing schedule on the map below.If the ship is unable to visit a port
due to an unforseen reason a back-up port has been selected for each of the
destinations.
NL: Het mag dan wel een cruise zijn, toch moet
er ook gewerkt worden. De studenten moeten allemaal deelnemen de lessen die aan
boord gegeven worden. Er wordt van iedereen verwacht dat ze 4 tot 5
verschillende cursussen volgen. De lessen worden georganiseerd door de Colorado
State University en tellen dus ook gewoon mee voor je academische loopbaan, net
zoals de lessen aan land. Studeren moet enkel op zeedagen want wanneer het
schip aangemeerd ligt in een haven mag iedereen aan land. In elke haven worden wel
nog educatieve uitstappen georganiseerd. Er worden ook specifieke lessen
gegeven over de verschillende culturen en landen die bezocht worden.
Ondanks het feit dat de Colorado State University de
hoofsponsor van het project is, mogen er ook studenten van andere
universiteiten deelnemen. Ook internationale studenten van buiten de Verenigde
Staten zijn welkom.
EN: It may be a cruise, but there is also work
to be done. The students all have to participate in the classes taught on
board. Everyone is expected to take 4 to 5 different courses. The classes are
organized by Colorado State University, so they count toward your academic
career just as much as the classes on land. Studying is only required on sea days
because when the ship is docked in a port everyone is allowed to explore ashore.
However, educational excursions are still organized in each port. Specific lessons
are also given on the different cultures and countries visited.
Despite the fact that Colorado State University is the main
sponsor of the project, students from other universities may also participate. International students from outside the
United States are also welcome.
Eén
schip, twee namen / One ship, two names
NL: Uniek aan het schip is dat het momenteel elk
jaar van naam veranderd. Het schip werd 1998 gebouwd als MS Deutschland voor
Peter Deilmann Reederei. Na het faillissement van de rederij in 2015 werd het
schip verkocht. Eind 2015 nam Semester At Sea het schip via charterverdrag over
om er in de wintermaanden schoolreizen mee te organiseren en veranderde de naam
in MS World Odyssey. Vanaf 2016 chartert ook de Duitse rederij Phoenix Reisen
het schip, maar dan in de zomermaanden. Zij laten het schip tijdens die maanden
weer rondvaren als MS Deutschland. Dit zorgt voor de unieke situatie dat de
naam van het schip twee keer per jaar veranderd: in de lente en de herfst. Op
enkele dagen tijd wordt de naam op de romp overschilderd, veranderd de streep
op de romp van kleur en wordt op de schouw het nieuwe logo aangebracht.
Deze unieke situatie zal nog enkele jaren blijven want het
chartercontract van Semester At Sea loopt nog tot minstens 2027 en dat van
Phoenix Reisen tot minstens 2025.
EN: A unique aspect of the ship is that it
currently changes its name every year. The ship was built in 1998 as MS Deutschland for Peter Deilmann Reederei.
After the bankruptcy of the cruise line in 2015, the ship was sold. At the end
of 2015, Semester At Sea chartered the ship to organize their school trips
during the winter months and changed the name to MS World Odyssey. In 2016,
German cruise line Phoenix Reisen also charters the ship, but during the summer
months. They once again rename the MS Deutschland during those months. This
creates the unique situation that the ship's name changes twice a year: in
spring and in fall. Over the span of a few days the name on the hull is
painted over, the stripe on the hull changes colour and the new logo is applied
to the funnel.
This unique
situation will remain for a few more years because Semester At Sea's charter
contract runs until at least 2027 and Phoenix Reisen's until at least 2025.

NL: Qua interieur wijkt het schip ook af van
de andere cruiseschepen. Het is namelijk volledig ingericht in de stijl van de
Grand Hotels uit de jaren ’20 met onder andere prachtige gekleurde glasramen in
de plafonds. Overal doorheen het schip liggen tapijten met gedetailleerde
patronen. Er is ook overal kunst te vinden, van historische schilderijen tot
borstbeelden en levensgrote standbeelden. Alles aan boord zorgt ervoor dat je
ondergedompeld wordt in het verleden, zonder op de hedendaagse luxe in te
boeten.
Het schip was ook jarenlang de ster in de beroemde Duitse
televisieserie ‘Das Traumschiff’, de tegenhanger van ‘The Love Boat’.
Tijdens haar tijd bij Peter Deilmann Reederei prijkte het logo van de serie op
de zijkant van de schouw bij het zwembad.
EN: In terms of interior, the ship also
differs from other cruise ships. The ship is completely decorated in the style
of the Grand Hotels of the 1920s, including beautiful colored stained glass
windows in the ceilings. Throughout the ship are carpets with detailed

The ship also
starred for many years in the famous German television series ‚Das
Traumschiff‘, the counterpart to ‚The Love Boat‘. During her time

met MS World Odyssey naar Antwerpen komt, maar het is niet de eerste aanloop
van de rederij in de stad. Tussen 2005 en 2014 lagen ze met hun vorige schip,
MV Explorer, maar liefst 6 keer in Antwerpen. Elke bezoek duurde verschillende
dagen omdat het schip telkens de stad bezocht tijdens een cruise en zo haar
passagiers de kans wou geven de stad grondig te verkennen. MS World Odyssey
blijft nu maar twee dagen omdat hun cruise uitzonderlijk begint in Antwerpen.
EN: This is the first time Semester At Sea has
come to Antwerp with MS World Odyssey, but it is not the cruise line’s first
call in the city. Between 2005 and 2014, they were in Antwerp no less than six
times with their previous ship, MV Explorer. Each call spanned several days
because the ship visited the city during a cruise, wanting to give its
passengers a chance to explore the city thoroughly. MS World Odyssey now stays
only two days because the cruise exceptionally starts in Antwerp.

schip. Qua exterieur past het schip perfect tussen de cruiseschepen die overal
ter wereld rondvaren, toch promoot de Amerikaanse rederij Residensea het schip
als het grootste private residentiële luxejacht ter wereld. Het is namelijk
niet mogelijk om zomaar een cruise te boeken op het schip. Elk van de 165
residenties aan boord moeten gekocht worden, met uitzondering van enkele
residenties die te huur zijn.

EN: The World is an atypical ship in many ways.
In terms of exterior, the ship fits perfectly among the cruise ships sailing
around the world, yet the US shipping company Residensea promotes the ship as
the largest private residential luxury yacht in the world. It is not possible
to just book a cruise on the ship. Each of the 165 residences on board must be
purchased, except for some residences that are available for rent.
Residences vary greatly in size and price. Residensea itself
does not list prices on their website, but news articles talk about prices
between $600,000 and $13 million. For that price tag, you get a studio or apartment
between 27m² and 301m². Before you can make the purchase, though, you still
have to be able to prove that your net worth is more than $5 million, as you
may calculate another 10-15% of the purchase price for annual maintenance.

terugkeert naar een bepaalde haven. Sinds de indienstname van The World in 2002
heeft het schip vier keer in Antwerpen gelegen: in 2005, 2011, 2015 en nu in
2023. In elke haven blijft het schip ook meerdere dagen om hun gasten op een
rustige manier de havens te laten ontdekken. Normaal gezien moest het schip in
2020 ook aan de Scheldekaaien liggen, maar dat werd uitgesteld door de
coronapandemie.

the option to help decide which ports to visit. Routes are fixed two years in
advance after consultation with the passengers, captain and planners. As a

port. Since The World was commissioned in 2002, the ship has been in Antwerp

NL: Het interieur van het schip is op veel
vlakken te vergelijken met andere luxecruiseschepen. Er is veel ruimte want aan
boord zijn maar tussen 150 en 200 passagiers, waarvoor een 250-koppige
bemanning klaarstaat. Er zijn ook vier schillende restaurants aan boord die elk
een andere focus hebben. Zo kan er gekozen worden uit de Aziatische keuken,
Mediterrane keuken, Haute Cuisine en een restaurant met vis en zeevruchten.
Wat The World uniek maakt is dat er ook een supermarkt aan
boord te vinden is: Fredy’s Deli Marketplace. Hier vinden de gasten verse
groenten en fruit, kruiden, sausen, snacks en zelfs ijscrème in de diepvries.
Met die producten kunnen ze dan zelf aan het werk in hun eigen keuken. Verbonden
aan de supermarkt is ook nog een bistro waar ontbijt word geserveerd en waar
ook gerechten opgediend worden die gemaakt zijn met de lokale producten van de
streek waar het schip op dat moment aangemeerd ligt. Op een luxeschip mag
natuurlijk ook de wijn niet ontbreken. In een speciale wijnkluis liggen maar liefst
14.000 flessen opgeslagen van 19 verschillende landen. Die worden aangeboden in
de verschillende restaurants, waar de gasten dan de keuze hebben uit 1100
verschillende wijnen.
Naast het culinaire aspect heeft het schip ook twee
zwembaden aan boord, twee minigolfbanen, een uitgebreid wellness center, een
theater, een unieke kunstgalerij en zelfs een kapel. Voor de gasten is het ook
mogelijk om per helikopter van en naar het schip gebracht te worden. Op de boeg
is hiervoor een heliplatform voorzien.
EN: The interior of the ship is comparable to
other luxury cruise ships in many ways. There is plenty of space as there are
only between 150 and 200 passengers on board, for whom a 250-strong crew is on
hand. There are also four different
restaurants on board, each with a different focus. These include Asian
cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine, Haute Cuisine and a seafood restaurant.
What makes The World unique is that a supermarket can also
be found on board: Fredy's Deli Marketplace. Here, guests will find fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, sauces, snacks
and even ice cream cream in the freezer. These products can then be used in
their own kitchens. Linked to the supermarket is also a bistro where breakfast
is served and where dishes made with local produce from the area where the ship
is currently berthed are also served. On a luxury ship, wine is of
course a must. As many as 14,000 bottles from 19 different countries are stored
in a special wine vault. These are offered in the various restaurants, where
guests then have a choice of 1,100 different wines.
Besides the culinary aspect, the ship also has two swimming
pools on board, two mini-golf courses, an extensive wellness centre, a theatre,
a unique art gallery and even a chapel. For guests, it is also possible to be
taken to and from the ship by helicopter. A helipad is provided on the bow for
this purpose.

World Cruise
NL: Tijdens haar wereldcruise in 2023 zal The
World elke oceaan bevaren en 6 continenten bezoeken. Begin dit jaar vertrok het
schip vanuit Dubai richting Indië. Van daaruit ging het via Sri Lanka naar de
Maladieven en de Seychellen. Na enkele stops in het Midden Oosten ging het via
het Suezkanaal naar de Middellandse Zee, waar het schip twee maanden heeft
rondgevaren. Nadien zette het koers op West-Europa. Het schip kwam vanuit het
Engelse Tibury naar Antwerpen en zal vanaf hier richting Bremen in Duitsland
gaan. Daarna gaat het na enkele tussenstops in de Oostzee richting Noorwegen en
IJsland waarna verder wordt overgestoken richting Groenland waar expedities
georganiseerd zullen worden.
Vanaf daar gaat het terug Zuidwaarts richting Canada en de
Verenigde Staten. Via de Caraïben en Zuid-Amerika zal het schip uiteindelijk
uiteindelijke de Drake Passage naar Antarctica oversteken. Zelfs voor The World
is Antarctica als bestemming iets uniek. De passagiers zullen Nieuwjaar kunnen
doorbrengen op het witte continent.
EN: During her 2023 world cruise, The World
will sail every ocean and visit six continents. Earlier this year, the ship
left Dubai for India. From there, it went via Sri Lanka to the Maladives and
Seychelles. After a few stops in the Middle East, it went via the Suez Canal to

Greenland where expeditions will be organised.
From there, it
will head back south towards Canada and the United States. Via the Caribbean
and South America, the ship will finally cross the Drake Passage to Antarctica.
Even for The World, Antarctica as a destination is something unique. Passengers
will be able to spend New Year on the white continent.

Ocean Nova came to Antwerp for the first time on 21 April 2023. The Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży also returned the same day from her 15th sea stint for the
Antwerp Maritime Academy. Both ships moored at the cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.

Scheldestad geweest is. De Ocean Nova werd gebouwd in 1991 en heeft plaats aan
boord voor 78 passagiers. Dankzij haar versterkte romp kan het schip ook
cruises varen in Antarctica. Tijdens haar bezoek aan Antwerpen voer de Ocean
Nova een cruise langs het Kanaal en Denemarken. Vanuit Antwerpen voer het schip
rechtstreeks naar Zeebrugge om daarna het Kanaal over te varen richting het
Engelse Tilbury.

expedition cruise ship Ocean Nova came to Antwerp for the first time on Friday
21 April. It is the smallest cruise ship to come to Antwerp this year and is
the second smallest cruise ship ever the city. The Ocean Nova was built in 1991
and has room on board for 78 passengers. Thanks to its reinforced hull, the
ship can also sail cruises in Antarctica. During her visit to Antwerp, the
Ocean Nova was sailing a cruise along the English Channel and Denmark. From
Antwerp, the ship sailed directly to Zeebrugge before crossing the Channel
towards Tilbury in England.

van de Ocean Nova viel samen met de terugkomst van het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży.
Na vier weken meerde het Poolse schoolschip rond 14:00u opnieuw aan in
Antwerpen. Het schip wordt elk jaar ingezet voor de Antwerp Maritime Academy,
vroeger gekend als de Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen, voor een zeestage met hun
eerstejaarsstudenten. Het was de 15de keer dat er zo’n zeestage georganiseerd
werd op het schip. Een deel van de eerstejaarsstudenten was in de masten
geklommen voor de aankomst aan de Scheldekaaien. Doordat de Ocean Nova niet
veel plaats innam aan het cruiseponton werd er besloten om de Dar Młodzieży ook
aan het ponton te laten aanmeren.
Dar Młodzieży vertrok op
zondagavond opnieuw uit Antwerpen. De volgende bestemming is de haven van
Hamburg in Duitsland, waar het schip op 5 mei zal aankomen. Van daaruit gaan ze
via het Zweedse Stockholm terug richting Gdynia in Polen.
EN: The cruise call
of the Ocean Nova coincided with the return of the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży.
After four weeks, the Polish school ship docked in Antwerp again around 14:00h.
The ship is used every year by the Antwerp Maritime Academy to organise a traineeship.
It was the 15th time such a sea traineeship was organised on the ship. Several
of the first-year students had climbed the masts while arriving back at the
Scheldt quays in Antwerp. As the Ocean Nova did not take up much space on the
cruise pontoon, it was decided that the Dar Młodzieży would also dock on the
pontoon.
Dar Młodzieży left Antwerp again
on Sunday evening. The next destination is the port of Hamburg in Germany,
where the ship will arrive on 5 May. From there, they will head back to Gdynia
in Poland via Stockholm, Sweden.

unexpected extra call. A total of 23 sea cruise calls took place this year,

nieuwe Engelse rederij Ambassador Cruise Line. De rederij is de herrijzenis van
Cruise & Maritime Voyages, die door de Coronacrisis failliet ging. MS
Ambition kwam in 2022 bij hun vloot en was voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen te
zien op 19 oktober 2023.
Met in totaal 23 zeecruiseaanlopen en rond 16.000 passagiers was
2023 een mooi cruisejaar. Het lijkt erop dat de cruise-industrie zich na enkele
moeilijke jaren terug gestabiliseerd heeft. Er kwamen 17 verschillende schepen
naar de Scheldestad van 16 verschillende rederijen en in totaal werden er 36
ligdagen geregistreerd.

UK cruise line Ambassador Cruise Line. The cruise line is the resurrection of
Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which went bankrupt due to the Corona crisis. MS
Ambition joined their fleet in 2022 and was first seen in Antwerp on 19 October
2023.
With a total of 23 sea cruise calls and around 16.000 passengers,
2023 was a good cruise season. It seems the cruise industry has stabilised
again after a few difficult years. 17 different ships from 16 different cruise
lines came to the city, accounting for a total of 36 berth days.

Opnieuw in Antwerpen / After 24 Years Back in Antwerp
NL: Met haar paarse livrei is het schip een opvallende
gast in de stad. Door de jaren heen heeft het schip al met 5 verschillende
huisstijlen rondgevaren. In 1999 kwam het schip in de vaart voor Festival
Cruises als MS Mistral. Nog voor haar allereerst reis, of Maiden Voyage, was
het schip eind juni 1999 voor enkele dagen te gast in Antwerpen. Het eerste
nieuwbouwschip van de rederij werd in de Scheldestad voorgesteld aan de pers en
de reisagenten. Op 17 juli startte MS Mistral haar 7-daagse Maiden Voyage vanuit
Genua.
Na het faillissement van Festival Cruises in 2004 werd het
schip gekocht door de Spaanse rederij Ibero Cruceros als MS Grand Mistral. Als
onderdeel van de Carnival Cooperation werd in 2014 besloten dat Ibero Cruceros
volledig zou samengaan met Costa Cruises. Hierdoor werd het schip omgedoopt tot
Costa neoRiviera. Na enkele jaren bij Costa werd het schip doorgegeven aan hun
dochterrederij AIDA Cruises als MS AIDAmira waarvoor het cruises naar Afrika
voer.
In april 2022 werd het schip gekocht door Ambassador Cruise
Line. Vanaf september 2022 werd het schip voor 6 maanden gecharterd door de
Schotse Regering om te dienen als tijdelijke onderkomst voor Oekraïense
vluchtelingen in Glasgow. Op 11 mei 2023 werd het schip uiteindelijk gedoopt in
Newcastle. Op 19 oktober 2023 kwam het schip na 24 jaar terug naar Antwerpen,
dit keer voor de eerste keer als MS Ambition.
Oorspronkelijk zou MS Ambition het cruiseseizoen van 2023
afsluiten met haar aanloop op 9 en 10 december. Op het laatste moment werd
echter beslist om het schip op 12 en 13 december opnieuw naar de Scheldestad te
sturen. Bij het tweede schip van de rederij, MS Ambience, werd tijdens een
gepland werfbezoek in Bremerhaven schade ontdekt aan een schroefas waardoor het
schip tot begin januari in het droogdok moet blijven. Om de gedupeerde
passagiers tegemoet te komen werden de cruises van MS Ambition aangepast. Er
werd beslist om Hamburg in de volgende cruise te vervangen door Antwerpen.
Hierdoor heeft MS Ambition maar liefst 3 keer achterelkaar heen en weer gevaren
tussen Antwerpen en Tilbury in Engeland.
EN: With her purple livery, the ship is a
striking guest in thr city. Over the years, the ship has sailed around with 5
different house styles. In 1999, the ship entered service for Festival Cruises
as MS Mistral. Even before her Maiden Voyage the ship visited Antwerp for a few
days at the end of June 1999. The cruise line’s first new-build ship was
presented to the press and travel agents at the Scheldt Quays. On 17 July, MS
Mistral started her 7-day Maiden Voyage from Genua.
Following the bankruptcy of Festival Cruises in 2004, the
ship was bought by Spanish cruise line Ibero Cruceros as MS Grand Mistral. As
part of the Carnival Cooperation, it was decided in 2014 that Ibero Cruceros
would fully merge with Costa Cruises. As a result, the ship was renamed Costa
neoRiviera. After several years with Costa, the ship was passed on to their
subsidiary AIDA Cruises as MS AIDAmira for which it sailed cruises to Africa.
In April 2022, the ship was bought by Ambassador Cruise
Line. From September 2022, the ship was chartered for six months by the
Scottish Government to serve as a temporary shelter for Ukrainian refugees in
Glasgow. On 11 May 2023, the ship was finally christened in Newcastle. On 19
October 2023, the ship returned to Antwerp after 24 years, this time for the
first time as MS Ambition.
Originally, MS Ambition was supposed to close the 2023
cruise season with her call on 9 and 10 December. However, a last-minute
decision was made to send the ship to Antwerp again on 12 and 13 December. On
the cruise line’s second ship, MS Ambience, damage to a propeller shaft was
discovered during a planned visit at the shipyard in Bremerhaven, requiring the
ship to remain in dry dock until early January. To accommodate affected
passengers, MS Ambition's cruises were adjusted. It was decided to replace Hamburg
with Antwerp in the next cruise. As
a result, MS Ambition sailed back and forth between Antwerp and Tilbury in
England as many as three times in a row.
NL: Ook in 2024 staat MS Ambition verschillende
keren gepland voor een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Momenteel staan er in totaal 24
zeecruiseaanlopen gepland en zullen 5 cruiseschepen voor de eerste keer naar

NL: Het Noorderterras en de bijbehorende
geklasseerde hangars aan de cruiseterminal worden de komende jaren
gerestaureerd. Hierdoor zal het wandelterras tot het voorjaar van 2025
afgesloten worden. Naast de restauratie zal het terras ook vergroend worden met
plantenbakken met wilde grassen en struiken.
EN: The walking terrace ‘Noorderterras’ and
associated listed hangars at the cruise terminal will be restored over the next
few years. As a result, the
walkway terrace will be closed until the spring of 2025. In addition to the
restoration, the terrace will also be made greener with planters of wild
grasses and shrubs.
NL:Het Noorderterras en de aangrenzende hangars
ter hoogte van de cruiseterminal zijn in behoorlijk slechte staat. Enkele jaren
geleden werden er om veiligheidsredenen al noodherstellingen uitgevoerd aan de
daken. Nu start de grondige renovatie en vooral restauratie van de geklasseerde
hangars.
In totaal wordt 9 miljoen euro uitgetrokken om het
wandelterras, de hangars en de omgeving in ere te herstellen. De originele façades
van de hangars aan de kant van de Jordaenskaai worden volledig gerestaureerd en
de ontbrekende elementen worden nagemaakt in de originele vorm. De
oorspronkelijk kleur, zijnde een midden-grijstint, zal terug zichtbaar gemaakt
worden. De lichtstraten in de daken zullen ook verder opengemaakt worden zodat
het licht de kaaivlakte beter bereikt. Er wordt ook akoestische isolatie
voorzien om het galmen onder de hangars tegen te gaan. Op kaainiveau zullen de
restanten van de oude burchtmuur zichtbaar gemaakt worden tot op een diepte van
2,5 meter. Er zullen ook kleinere exporuimtes en paviljoenen voor de jeugd
voorzien worden.
EN: The Noorderterras and adjacent hangars
near the cruise terminal are in pretty bad shape. Several years ago, emergency
repairs were already made to the roofs for safety reasons. Now the thorough
renovation and especially restoration of the listed hangars is starting.
A total of 9 million euros will be allocated to restore the terrace,
the hangars and the surrounding area. The original facades of the hangars on
the side of the Jordaenskaai will be fully restored and the missing elements
recreated in their original form. The
original color, being a mid-gray tone, will be made visible again. The
skylights in the roofs will also be opened up further so that the light reaches
the quayside better. Acoustic insulation will be provided to prevent
reverberation under the hangars. At quay level, the remains of the old
castle wall will be made visible to a depth of 2.5 meters. Smaller exhibition spaces and pavilions for youth
will also be provided.
NL: Het terras zelf wordt ook grondig
onderhanden genomen. De staalplaat wordt tot op het ruwe staal blootgelegd
waarna ze bewerkt wordt en er een nieuwe antislip laag op wordt aangebracht.
De balustrades worden ook vervangen en krijgen bovenaan een houten leunrand. De
grootste verandering wordt de inrichting van het terras zelf. Er zullen
namelijk grote plantvakken met siergrassen, vaste planten en heesters komen. De
plantensoorten die hiervoor gebruikt zullen worden, werden speciaal voor het
zilte klimaat aan de Schelde gekozen. Er wordt ook wateropvang voorzien van de
afdaken, zodat dat regenwater gebruikt kan worden voor de planten op het
terras.
Om het extra gewicht van de planten te kunnen dragen wordt
het wandelterras langs onder extra verstevigd. Naast de planten zullen er ook
extra trappen voorzien worden die de verbinding met de kaaivlakte maken. Het
project kreeg de naam ‘Kaailine’, wat geïnspireerd is op de ‘Highline’ in New
York. Daar werd een oude verhoogde spoorwegbedding omgevormd tot een park.
EN: The terrace itself is also being
thoroughly reworked. The steel sheet will be exposed down to the raw steel
after which it will be treated and a new anti-slip coating applied. The
railings will also be replaced and get a wooden handrail at the top. The
biggest change will be the layout of the terrace itself. There will be large
planting beds with ornamental grasses, perennials and shrubs. The plant species
that will be used for this were specially chosen for the salty climate at the river
Scheldt. Water collection will also be provided from the canopies so that that
rainwater can be used for the plants on the terrace.
To support the extra weight of the plants, the walking
terrace will be reinforced along the bottom. In addition to the plants, additional steps will be provided to connect to
the quay terrace. The project was named "Kaailine," which was
inspired by the "Highline" in New York. There, an old elevated
railroad bed was transformed into a park.

EN: The North Terrace was closed on Monday,
September 18, for the start of works. The restoration of the hangars and the
walking terrace will last until spring 2025. Until then, only the front part of

keer ook de laatste keer. Begin januari 2023 kondigde de Duitse rederij AIDA
Cruises namelijk aan dat het schip verkocht werd.

feit dat AIDA tussen 2010 en 2012 met verschillende schepen van de grotere
Sphinx-Klasse de stad bezocht, werd uiteindelijk door de rederij besloten dat
de schepen te groot waren om Antwerpen te blijven bezoeken. Hierdoor is de kans
klein dat AIDA de komende jaren nog in Antwerpen te zien zal zijn. Het AIDA

last small ship leaving AIDA's fleet. The three ships were used in recent years
for the 'AIDA Selection' program. During those cruises the less common ports

3 Year World Cruise
NL: Ondertussen is ook de koper van het schip bekend. De Griekse
rederij Miray Cruises heeft AIDAaura gekocht om er een 3-jaar-durende
wereldcruise mee te organiseren. Met hun nieuwe rederij ‘Life At Sea Cruises’
zal het schip, dat omgedoopt wordt tot MS Lara, maar liefst 382 havens bezoeken
in 140 landen en 7 continenten. De prijs voor dit avontuur start bij 77.026
Dollar. De cruise start op 1 november 2023 in Istanbul en eindigt op 1 november
2026 ook weer in de stad na 1059 dagen.
Het vaarplan werd al enkele keren aangepast maar momenteel
staat ook Antwerpen tussen de te bezoeken havens. MS Lara zou Antwerpen

aangepast naar Antwerpen.
MS World Odyssey vertrekt van hieruit op een bijna vier
maand durende reis richting Bangkok in Thailand. Onderweg worden 10
verschillende bestemmingen bezocht waar het schip telkens verschillende dagen
zal blijven liggen. Vanuit Antwerpen zet het schip rechtstreeks koers naar
Casablanca in Marokko. Na enkele stops in de Middellandse Zee gaat het via het
Suezkanaal richting Dubai om dan via Indië verder richting Zuidoost-Azië te

EN: Every year Semester At Sea organises two
world cruises: one in the spring and one in the fall. The departure port for
the fall cruise was originally Amsterdam, but it was changed to Antwerp for

MS World Odyssey departs from Antwerp on a nearly four-month
long voyage to Bangkok, Thailand. Along the way, 10 different destinations will
be visited where the ship will stay for several days each time. From Antwerp,

er ook gewerkt worden. De studenten moeten allemaal deelnemen de lessen die aan
boord gegeven worden. Er wordt van iedereen verwacht dat ze 4 tot 5
verschillende cursussen volgen. De lessen worden georganiseerd door de Colorado
State University en tellen dus ook gewoon mee voor je academische loopbaan, net
zoals de lessen aan land. Studeren moet enkel op zeedagen want wanneer het
schip aangemeerd ligt in een haven mag iedereen aan land. In elke haven worden wel
nog educatieve uitstappen georganiseerd. Er worden ook specifieke lessen
gegeven over de verschillende culturen en landen die bezocht worden.
Ondanks het feit dat de Colorado State University de
hoofsponsor van het project is, mogen er ook studenten van andere
universiteiten deelnemen. Ook internationale studenten van buiten de Verenigde
Staten zijn welkom.
EN: It may be a cruise, but there is also work
to be done. The students all have to participate in the classes taught on
board. Everyone is expected to take 4 to 5 different courses. The classes are
organized by Colorado State University, so they count toward your academic
career just as much as the classes on land. Studying is only required on sea days
because when the ship is docked in a port everyone is allowed to explore ashore.

Eén
schip, twee namen / One ship, two names
NL: Uniek aan het schip is dat het momenteel elk
jaar van naam veranderd. Het schip werd 1998 gebouwd als MS Deutschland voor
Peter Deilmann Reederei. Na het faillissement van de rederij in 2015 werd het
schip verkocht. Eind 2015 nam Semester At Sea het schip via charterverdrag over
om er in de wintermaanden schoolreizen mee te organiseren en veranderde de naam
in MS World Odyssey. Vanaf 2016 chartert ook de Duitse rederij Phoenix Reisen
het schip, maar dan in de zomermaanden. Zij laten het schip tijdens die maanden
weer rondvaren als MS Deutschland. Dit zorgt voor de unieke situatie dat de
naam van het schip twee keer per jaar veranderd: in de lente en de herfst. Op
enkele dagen tijd wordt de naam op de romp overschilderd, veranderd de streep
op de romp van kleur en wordt op de schouw het nieuwe logo aangebracht.
Deze unieke situatie zal nog enkele jaren blijven want het
chartercontract van Semester At Sea loopt nog tot minstens 2027 en dat van
Phoenix Reisen tot minstens 2025.
EN: A unique aspect of the ship is that it
currently changes its name every year. The ship was built in 1998 as MS Deutschland for Peter Deilmann Reederei.
After the bankruptcy of the cruise line in 2015, the ship was sold. At the end
of 2015, Semester At Sea chartered the ship to organize their school trips
during the winter months and changed the name to MS World Odyssey. In 2016,
German cruise line Phoenix Reisen also charters the ship, but during the summer
months. They once again rename the MS Deutschland during those months. This
creates the unique situation that the ship's name changes twice a year: in
spring and in fall. Over the span of a few days the name on the hull is
painted over, the stripe on the hull changes colour and the new logo is applied
to the funnel.
This unique
situation will remain for a few more years because Semester At Sea's charter

NL: Qua interieur wijkt het schip ook af van
de andere cruiseschepen. Het is namelijk volledig ingericht in de stijl van de
Grand Hotels uit de jaren ’20 met onder andere prachtige gekleurde glasramen in
de plafonds. Overal doorheen het schip liggen tapijten met gedetailleerde
patronen. Er is ook overal kunst te vinden, van historische schilderijen tot
borstbeelden en levensgrote standbeelden. Alles aan boord zorgt ervoor dat je
ondergedompeld wordt in het verleden, zonder op de hedendaagse luxe in te
boeten.
Het schip was ook jarenlang de ster in de beroemde Duitse
televisieserie ‘Das Traumschiff’, de tegenhanger van ‘The Love Boat’.
Tijdens haar tijd bij Peter Deilmann Reederei prijkte het logo van de serie op
de zijkant van de schouw bij het zwembad.

passagiers de kans wou geven de stad grondig te verkennen. MS World Odyssey
blijft nu maar twee dagen omdat hun cruise uitzonderlijk begint in Antwerpen.

around the world, yet the US shipping company Residensea promotes the ship as
the largest private residential luxury yacht in the world. It is not possible
to just book a cruise on the ship. Each of the 165 residences on board must be
purchased, except for some residences that are available for rent.
Residences vary greatly in size and price. Residensea itself
does not list prices on their website, but news articles talk about prices
between $600,000 and $13 million. For that price tag, you get a studio or apartment
between 27m² and 301m². Before you can make the purchase, though, you still
have to be able to prove that your net worth is more than $5 million, as you
may calculate another 10-15% of the purchase price for annual maintenance.

terugkeert naar een bepaalde haven. Sinds de indienstname van The World in 2002
heeft het schip vier keer in Antwerpen gelegen: in 2005, 2011, 2015 en nu in
2023. In elke haven blijft het schip ook meerdere dagen om hun gasten op een
rustige manier de havens te laten ontdekken. Normaal gezien moest het schip in
2020 ook aan de Scheldekaaien liggen, maar dat werd uitgesteld door de
coronapandemie.

NL: Het interieur van het schip is op veel
vlakken te vergelijken met andere luxecruiseschepen. Er is veel ruimte want aan
boord zijn maar tussen 150 en 200 passagiers, waarvoor een 250-koppige
bemanning klaarstaat. Er zijn ook vier schillende restaurants aan boord die elk
een andere focus hebben. Zo kan er gekozen worden uit de Aziatische keuken,
Mediterrane keuken, Haute Cuisine en een restaurant met vis en zeevruchten.
Wat The World uniek maakt is dat er ook een supermarkt aan
boord te vinden is: Fredy’s Deli Marketplace. Hier vinden de gasten verse
groenten en fruit, kruiden, sausen, snacks en zelfs ijscrème in de diepvries.
Met die producten kunnen ze dan zelf aan het werk in hun eigen keuken. Verbonden
aan de supermarkt is ook nog een bistro waar ontbijt word geserveerd en waar
ook gerechten opgediend worden die gemaakt zijn met de lokale producten van de
streek waar het schip op dat moment aangemeerd ligt. Op een luxeschip mag
natuurlijk ook de wijn niet ontbreken. In een speciale wijnkluis liggen maar liefst
14.000 flessen opgeslagen van 19 verschillende landen. Die worden aangeboden in
de verschillende restaurants, waar de gasten dan de keuze hebben uit 1100
verschillende wijnen.
Naast het culinaire aspect heeft het schip ook twee
zwembaden aan boord, twee minigolfbanen, een uitgebreid wellness center, een
theater, een unieke kunstgalerij en zelfs een kapel. Voor de gasten is het ook
mogelijk om per helikopter van en naar het schip gebracht te worden. Op de boeg
is hiervoor een heliplatform voorzien.
EN: The interior of the ship is comparable to
other luxury cruise ships in many ways. There is plenty of space as there are
only between 150 and 200 passengers on board, for whom a 250-strong crew is on
hand. There are also four different
restaurants on board, each with a different focus. These include Asian
cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine, Haute Cuisine and a seafood restaurant.
What makes The World unique is that a supermarket can also
be found on board: Fredy's Deli Marketplace. Here, guests will find fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, sauces, snacks
and even ice cream cream in the freezer. These products can then be used in
their own kitchens. Linked to the supermarket is also a bistro where breakfast
is served and where dishes made with local produce from the area where the ship
is currently berthed are also served. On a luxury ship, wine is of
course a must. As many as 14,000 bottles from 19 different countries are stored
in a special wine vault. These are offered in the various restaurants, where
guests then have a choice of 1,100 different wines.
Besides the culinary aspect, the ship also has two swimming
pools on board, two mini-golf courses, an extensive wellness centre, a theatre,
a unique art gallery and even a chapel. For guests, it is also possible to be
taken to and from the ship by helicopter. A helipad is provided on the bow for
this purpose.
2023
World Cruise
NL: Tijdens haar wereldcruise in 2023 zal The
World elke oceaan bevaren en 6 continenten bezoeken. Begin dit jaar vertrok het
schip vanuit Dubai richting Indië. Van daaruit ging het via Sri Lanka naar de
Maladieven en de Seychellen. Na enkele stops in het Midden Oosten ging het via
het Suezkanaal naar de Middellandse Zee, waar het schip twee maanden heeft
rondgevaren. Nadien zette het koers op West-Europa. Het schip kwam vanuit het
Engelse Tibury naar Antwerpen en zal vanaf hier richting Bremen in Duitsland
gaan. Daarna gaat het na enkele tussenstops in de Oostzee richting Noorwegen en
IJsland waarna verder wordt overgestoken richting Groenland waar expedities
georganiseerd zullen worden.
Vanaf daar gaat het terug Zuidwaarts richting Canada en de
Verenigde Staten. Via de Caraïben en Zuid-Amerika zal het schip uiteindelijk
uiteindelijke de Drake Passage naar Antarctica oversteken. Zelfs voor The World
is Antarctica als bestemming iets uniek. De passagiers zullen Nieuwjaar kunnen
doorbrengen op het witte continent.
EN: During her 2023 world cruise, The World
will sail every ocean and visit six continents. Earlier this year, the ship
left Dubai for India. From there, it went via Sri Lanka to the Maladives and
Seychelles. After a few stops in the Middle East, it went via the Suez Canal to

From there, it
will head back south towards Canada and the United States. Via the Caribbean
and South America, the ship will finally cross the Drake Passage to Antarctica.
Even for The World, Antarctica as a destination is something unique. Passengers
will be able to spend New Year on the white continent.

Scheldestad geweest is. De Ocean Nova werd gebouwd in 1991 en heeft plaats aan
boord voor 78 passagiers. Dankzij haar versterkte romp kan het schip ook
cruises varen in Antarctica. Tijdens haar bezoek aan Antwerpen voer de Ocean
Nova een cruise langs het Kanaal en Denemarken. Vanuit Antwerpen voer het schip
rechtstreeks naar Zeebrugge om daarna het Kanaal over te varen richting het
Engelse Tilbury.

ship can also sail cruises in Antarctica. During her visit to Antwerp, the
Ocean Nova was sailing a cruise along the English Channel and Denmark. From
Antwerp, the ship sailed directly to Zeebrugge before crossing the Channel
towards Tilbury in England.

eerstejaarsstudenten. Het was de 15de keer dat er zo’n zeestage georganiseerd
werd op het schip. Een deel van de eerstejaarsstudenten was in de masten
geklommen voor de aankomst aan de Scheldekaaien. Doordat de Ocean Nova niet
veel plaats innam aan het cruiseponton werd er besloten om de Dar Młodzieży ook
aan het ponton te laten aanmeren.
Dar Młodzieży vertrok op
zondagavond opnieuw uit Antwerpen. De volgende bestemming is de haven van
Hamburg in Duitsland, waar het schip op 5 mei zal aankomen. Van daaruit gaan ze
via het Zweedse Stockholm terug richting Gdynia in Polen.

of the Ocean Nova coincided with the return of the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży.
After four weeks, the Polish school ship docked in Antwerp again around 14:00h.
The ship is used every year by the Antwerp Maritime Academy to organise a traineeship.
It was the 15th time such a sea traineeship was organised on the ship. Several
of the first-year students had climbed the masts while arriving back at the
Scheldt quays in Antwerp. As the Ocean Nova did not take up much space on the
cruise pontoon, it was decided that the Dar Młodzieży would also dock on the
pontoon.
Dar Młodzieży left Antwerp again
on Sunday evening. The next destination is the port of Hamburg in Germany,
where the ship will arrive on 5 May. From there, they will head back to Gdynia
in Poland via Stockholm, Sweden.
