NL: Het Engelse cruiseschip MS Ambition kwam op 9 april 2026 als eerste zeecruiseschip voor 2026 naar Antwerpen. Haar verblijf werd ongewild met een dag verlengd door een groot olielek in het Deurganckdok in de Antwerpse haven, dat het scheepvaartverkeer op de Schelde stillegde.

Antwerp on 9 April 2026, becoming the first sea cruise ship of 2026. Her stay
was inadvertently extended by a day due to a major oil spill in the
Deurganckdok in the Port of Antwerp, which brought shipping traffic on the
Scheldt to a standstill.
NL: Het 215 meter lange
cruiseschip MS Ambition meerde op 9 april rond 08:30u aan bij Het Steen en
opende daarmee het zeecruiseseizoen van 2026. Oorspronkelijk moest MS Balmoral
van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines het cruiseseizoen openen op 15 en 16 februari,
maar door een samenloop van omstandigheden, waaronder een recente
norovirus-uitbraak aan boord, ging die aanloop niet door.
Het 11de bezoek van MS
Ambition aan Antwerpen viel samen met de vijfde verjaardag van haar Engelse
rederij Ambassador Cruise Line. Het schip werd in april 2022 als tweede schip
aan de vloot toegevoegd. Voordien voer het als AIDAmira voor de Duitse rederij
AIDA Cruises.
Om 22:00u vertrok MS Ambition
zoals gepland vanaf de Antwerpse cruiseterminal richting Zeebrugge, waar het in
de ochtend verwacht werd. Kort na vertrek kwam plots de melding binnenkwam dat
de Schelde ter hoogte van het Deurganckdok volledig gestremd werd doordat er
een groot olielek gevonden was.

docked at Het Steen at around 08:30h on 9 April, marking the start of the 2026 sea
cruise season. Originally, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ MS Balmoral was due to
open the cruise season on 15 and 16 February, but due to a combination of
circumstances, including a recent norovirus outbreak on board, that visit was
cancelled.
MS Ambition’s 11th visit to Antwerp coincided
with the fifth anniversary of its British owner, Ambassador Cruise Line. The
ship was added to the fleet as its second vessel in April 2022. Prior to that,
it sailed as AIDAmira for the German cruise line AIDA Cruises.
At 22:00, MS Ambition departed as planned from
the Antwerp cruise terminal bound for Zeebrugge, where it was expected to
arrive in the morning. Shortly after departure, a report suddenly came in that
the Scheldt had been completely closed off near the Deurganckdok due to a large
oil spill.
Olielek/Oil Spill Deurganckdok
NL: Tijdens een
bunkeroperatie raakte het 278 meter lange containerschip MSC Denmark VI
beschadigd en kwam er door een 8cm grote scheur in de romp een nog onbekende hoeveelheid
bunkerolie in het Deurganckdok terecht. De grote olievlek verspreide zich al
snel richting de Schelde waar het tijdens de nacht verschillende andere schepen
heeft vervuild. Gespecialiseerde schepen werden ingezet om de olie op te
ruimen.
Voor MS Ambition versperde de olievlek de doorgang richting zee. Het schip was genoodzaakt om 45 minuten na vertrek, ter hoogte van Haven 1013 (iets ten westen van de Blokkersdijk) rechtsomkeer te maken. De sleepboot VB Shark, die nog bij het schip voer na de begeleiding van het vertrekmanoeuvre, hielp MS Ambition tijdens de ongeplande zwaai. Samen voeren ze terug naar de cruiseterminal waar opnieuw een zwaaimanoeuvre werd uitgevoerd. Uiteindelijke meerde MS Ambition, anderhalf uur na haar vertrek, om 23:30u opnieuw aan het cruiseponton aan.
EN: During a bunkering operation, the
278-metre-long container ship MSC Denmark VI sustained damage, and an as yet
unknown quantity of bunker oil leaked into the Deurganckdok through an 8cm large crack in
the hull. The large oil slick quickly spread towards the Scheldt, where it
contaminated several other vessels during the night. Specialised vessels were
deployed to clean up the oil.
For MS Ambition, the oil slick blocked the
passage to the sea. The ship was forced to turn back 45 minutes after
departure, near Berth 1013 (just west of the Blokkersdijk). The tugboat VB
Shark, which was still alongside the ship after assisting with the departure
manoeuvre, helped MS Ambition during the unscheduled turn. Together they sailed
back to the cruise terminal, where another turning manoeuvre was carried out.
Finally, an hour and a half after its departure, at 23:30h, the MS Ambition
moored once again at the cruise pontoon.

NL: Overdag op 10
april werd in samenspraak met de Port of Antwerp-Bruges een nieuw vertrekuur
besproken. Vanaf 13:30u werd de Schelde terug vrijgegeven voor het
scheepvaartverkeer. Het Deurganckdok bleef wel nog steeds afgesloten. Voor MS
Ambition werd 16:00u als nieuw vertrekuur vastgelegd. De aanloop in Zeebrugge
werd geschrapt en de eerstvolgende haven, Honfleur, werd vervangen door Le
Havre, waar het schip op 11 april om 11:30u zou aanmeren.
De tweede vertrekpoging was een
succes en om vijf na vier vertrok MS Ambition richting zee. De verder vaart op
de Schelde verliep zonder problemen. De aanloop in Antwerpen was deel van een
6-daagse cruise die vertrok van Portsmouth en oorspronkelijk IJmuiden,
Antwerpen, Zeebrugge en Honfleur zou aanlopen, om daarna te weer te eindigen in
Portsmouth.

time was agreed in consultation with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. From 13:30h,
the Scheldt was reopened to shipping traffic. However, the Deurganckdok
remained closed. A new departure time of 16:00h was set for MS Ambition. The
call at Zeebrugge was cancelled and the next port, Honfleur, was replaced by Le
Havre, where the ship docked at 11:30 on 11 April.
The second attempt to depart was successful and at five past four, the MS Ambition set sail. The rest of the voyage on the Scheldt proceeded without incident. The call at Antwerp was part of a six-day cruise that departed from Portsmouth and was originally scheduled to call at IJmuiden, Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Honfleur, before returning to Portsmouth.
