NL: Het nieuwste schip van de Engelse cruiserederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages kwam op zaterdag 6 juni voor het
eerst naar Antwerpen. MS Magellan is met 222 meter één van grootste cruiseschepen
die dit jaar aanmeren in de Scheldestad. Later dit jaar komt het schip nog 4
keer terug naar Antwerpen.

6th. MS Magellan is with a length of 222 metres one of the largest ships to
call at the city this year. Later this year the ship will visit Antwerp another
4 times.
NL: MS Magellan, het nieuwe
vlaggenschip van de Engelse cruiserederij Cruise
& Maritime Voyages (CMV), lag op zaterdag 6 juni voor de eerste keer in
Antwerpen. Het schip heeft een lengte van 222 meter en is daarmee één van de
grootste schepen die dit jaar naar de Antwerpse binnenstad komen. Magellan, die
1450 passagiers aan boord kan nemen, wordt later op het jaar nog vier keer
verwacht in Antwerpen: één keer in september en drie keer tijdens de
kerstperiode om de Antwerpse kerstmarkt te bezoeken.

cruise line Cruise & Maritime Voyages
(CMV) was docked in Antwerp on her maiden call on Saturday June 6th. The
ship has a length of 222 metres and is one of the largest ships that will dock
in the city centre of Antwerp this year. Magellan, which can accommodate 1450
passengers, is planned to visit the city another 4 times this year: one time in
September and three times during the Christmas period for a visit to the
Christmas market of Antwerp.
NL: Opvallend aan de MS Magellan is
de "gevleugelde" schouw. In 1985 werd het schip als Holiday gebouwd voor de Amerikaanse
cruisegigant Carnival Cruise Lines.
Typisch voor de rederij is dat al hun schepen de kenmerkende blauw-wit-rode
schoorsteen hebben die volgens Carnival een walvisstaart voorstelt.
Toen het schip in 2010 verkocht
werd aan de zustermaatschappij Iberocruceros
werd ook de schoorsteen mee overgenomen. Daar voer het schip vier jaar onder de
naam Grand Holiday, tot de rederij
eind 2014 aankondigde dat ze zou samen gaan met Costa Cruises. Hierdoor werd het schip te koop aangeboden waarna
Cruise & Maritime Voyages het kocht.
Oorspronkelijk werd gezegd dat de
vleugels van de schouw gehaald zouden worden maar later bevestigde CMV dat de
schouw in de originele staat behouden zou worden omdat dat aerodynamisch toch
voordelen had.
EN: A remarkable feature of MS Magellan is the "winged"
funnel. In 1985 the ship was built as Holiday for the American cruise giant Carnival Cruise Lines. Typical for this
cruise line is that their ships all carry their distinctive blue-white-red
funnel, which Carnival claims to portrait the tail of a whale.
When the ship was sold to the sister company Iberocruceros in 2010 the funnel stayed
the same. There the ship sailed as Grand Holiday until the cruise line
announced at the end of 2014 that they would merge with Costa Cruises. Because of this the ship was put up for sale after
which Cruise & Maritime Voyages
bought it.
Originally it was said that the wings would be
removed from the funnel but later CMV announced that the funnel would be kept
in its original state as it would have aerodynamic advantages for the ship.
