Maiden Call L'Austral in Antwerpen

De Franse rederij Compagnie du Ponant lag op 7 mei voor het eerst met een schip in Antwerpen. Het luxecruisejacht L'Austral mocht als eerste onze stad komen ontdekken. Het schip is 142 meter lang waardoor het op plaatsen kan geraken waar de grote cruiseschepen niet kunnen komen, zoals bijvoorbeeld Antarctica. Hiervoor heeft L'Austral, net zoals haar twee identieke zusterschepen  een verstevigde romp. Hiermee kunnen de schepen door ijs varen met een dikte tot 40cm.

Aan boord van L'Austral verblijven 264 passagiers in Franse luxe met een strak maar aangenaam design. Het interieur heeft veel meer weg van dat van een luxejacht dan een doorsnee cruiseschip. We hadden de mogelijkheid eens rond te kijken aan boord. Het resultaat daarvan kan u hieronder bekijken. 

De passagiers kregen vlak voor het vertrek nog een leuke verrassing. Het Duitse cruiseschip MS Deutschland van Peter Deilmann Reederei kwam namelijk vroeger dan verwacht aan in Antwerpen. Toen de schepen zij aan zij voeren groeten ze elkaar met hun scheepshoorn. Terwijl de Deutschland verder voer om zich te draaien aan de Kennedytunnel gooide L'Austral haar trossen los en verliet Antwerpen richting Amsterdam.

On  7 May the French cruise line Compagnie du Ponant docked for the first time in Antwerp with one of their ships. The luxury cruise yacht L'Austral was the first of the fleet to explore the city. The ship has a length of 142 metres, that makes it possible to reach destinations that are impossible to get to with large cruise ships; for example Antarctica. L'Austral was, just like her two identical sister ships built with a strengthened hull. That way they are able to sail trough ice with a thickness up to 40cm.

Onboard L'Austral the 264 passengers can enjoy French luxury with a contemporary design. The interior can best be compared to that of a luxury yacht because it is different from most cruise ships. We got the opportunity to take a look around the ship. The result can be found below.

Just before the departures the passengers got a nice surprise. The German cruise ship MS Deutschland of Peter Deilmann Reederei arrived in Antwerp earlier than expected, resulting in the two ships meeting each other. They both greeted the other with their ship horn. While the Deutschland sailed upstream to turn around, L'Austral cast off her moorings and left Antwerp for Amsterdam.

Asuka II (飛鳥II) in Antwerpen

Het Japanse cruiseschip Asuka II (飛鳥II) van NYK Cruises lag op 3 mei na zeven jaar afwezigheid nog eens in Antwerpen. Het schip werd in 1990 gebouwd bij Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan. Oorspronkelijk voer ze onder de naam Crystal Harmony voor Crystal Cruises. In 2006 werd het schip overgedragen aan de zustermaatschappij Nippon Yūsen Kaisha of kortweg NYK. Na de overdracht werd het schip volledig gerenoveerd om zich zo beter op de Japanse markt te kunnen richten. Daarbij werd ook de naam veranderd in Asuka II. Asuka betekend in het Japans 'Flying Bird' of 'Vliegende Vogel'.

De meeste cruises vertrekken in Japan vanuit Yokohama of Kobe maar de Asuka II vaart ook elk jaar een wereldcruise. De wereldcruise voor dit jaar vertrok in Yokohama en voer via Indonesië en West-Australië naar Cape Town in Zuid Afrika. Vandaar voer de Asuka II verder naar Namibië, Tenerifé en Lissabon. In West-Europa stopte het schip in Cherbourg, Southampton en Antwerpen. Van hieruit vaart de Asuka II rechtstreeks door naar Gdynia in Polen vanwaar het in Baltische zee gaat cruises. Daarna vaart ze via Noorwegen over IJsland naar New York om dan van daaruit via het Panama-kanaal naar Acapulco en San Francisco te gaan. Daarna steekt ze door naar Honolulu om dan uiteindelijk terug aan te komen in Japan waar ze aan zal komen in Kobe. Wie meevaart op deze wereldcruise kan dus gerust zeggen dat ze een groot deel van de wereld gezien hebben.

De Asuka II heeft een lengte van 241 meter kan in totaal rond 1000 passagiers aan boord nemen. Voor zo'n groot schip lijkt dit misschien zeer weinig, maar dat komt omdat NYK Cruises ervoor kiest de passagiers veel ruimte te geven.

The Japanese cruise ship Asuka II ((飛鳥II) was once again docked in Antwerp on 3 May after seven years of absence. The ship was built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan in 1990. Originally she sailed under the name Crystal Harmony for Crystal Cruises. In 2006 the ship was handed over to the sister company Nippon Yūsen Kaisha, better known as NYK. After the transfer the ship was completely refurbished to suit the Japanese market. With the refurbishment they also chanced het name to Asuka II. Asuka in Japanese means 'Flying Bird'.

Most of the cruises of NYK start from Yokohama or Kobe in Japan, but every year the Asuka II also sails a world cruise. This year's world cruise started in Yokohama and sailed via Indonesia and Western-Australia to Cape Town in South Africa. From there the Asuka II cruised to Namibia, Tenerifé and Lisbon. In Western Europe the ship stopped in Cherbourg, Southampton and Antwerp. From here the Asuka II sails directly to Gdynia in Poland from where she will cruise the Baltic Sea. After that she will sail via Norway, over Iceland to New York, after which she will sail via the Panama-Canal to Acapulco and San Francisco. Balmoral opent Antwerpse cruiseseizoen 2014 / Balmoral opens cruise season 2014 in Antwerp

Het cruiseseizoen voor 2014 werd op 20 april in Antwerpen geopend door het Engelse cruiseschip Balmoral van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Het 218 meter lange schip kan 1400 passagiers vervoeren en vaart sinds 2008 voor de Engelse rederij. Daarvoor voer ze onder de naam Norwegian Crown voor Norwegian Cruise Line.

Dit jaar verwacht Antwerpen maarliefst 29 cruiseaanlopen, waaronder zes Maiden Calls. Het eerstvolgende cruiseschip is het Japanse cruiseschip Asuka II op 3 mei. Daarna volgen de cruise calls zich heel snel op:

On 20 April the cruise season of 2014 was opened in Antwerp by the English cruise ship Balmoral of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. The ship has a length of 218 metres and can accommodate 1400 passengers. The ship sails for the English cruise line since 2008. Before that it sailed for Norwegian Cruise Line under the name Norwegian Crown.

This year Antwerp expects 29 cruise calls among which are six Maiden Calls. The next ship will be the Japanese cruise ship Asuka II, on 3 May. After that the cruise calls will follow up closely:

Ship visit river cruise ship Swiss Diamond

Op 20 maart werd het cruiseseizoen voor 2014 voorgesteld aan boord van het riviercruiseschip Swiss Diamond van de Zwitserse rederij Scylla.

De Swiss Diamond heeft een lengte van 101 meter en heeft plaats voor 123 passagiers. Die passagiers kunnen zich ontspannen in het stijlvolle panoramasalon en de daarbij aansluitende bar die zich bevinden op dek 2. Eén dek lager is het restaurant van het schip te vinden. Op het zondek staat ook nog een jacuzzi klaar om tot rust te komen tijdens de vaarten op de rivieren en kanalen.

On 20 March the cruise season of 2014 was presented onboard the river cruise ship Swiss Diamond. The ship is part of the Swiss fleet of Scylla.

The Swiss Diamond has a length of 101 metres and can accommodate 123 passengers. Those passengers can relax in the stylish panorama salon with an accompanying bar which can be found on deck 2. One deck lower the ship's restaurant can be found. On the sun deck there's also a Jacuzzi installed for relaxing while sailing on the rivers and canals.

Officiële cruiselijst 2014 / Official cruise list 2014

De officiële lijst met cruisecalls voor 2014 is vrijgegeven door Cruise Port Antwerp. Het cruiseseizoen van 2014 beloofd één van de meest gevarieerde seizoenen te worden in jaren. In totaal staan er 28 aanlopen gepland van niet minder dan 21 verschillende cruiseschepen. Zes van deze schepen komen voor het eerst naar Antwerpen. Er is ook een duidelijke trend zichtbaar in het aantal overnachtingen van de cruiseschepen in onze stad. Met 11 geregistreerde overnight calls zal dit jaar een nieuw record gevestigd worden.

Op 20 april begint het cruiseseizoen met de komst van de vaste klant Balmoral van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Vanaf mei gaat het seizoen in een heuse stroomversnelling. Na 7 jaar brengt het Japanse cruiseschip Asuka II op 3 mei nog eens een bezoek aan onze stad. Maar ook op 7, 8, 9, 11 en 12 mei liggen er cruiseschepen in Antwerpen. Tijdens die week zijn er niet minder dan drie maiden calls. Zowel de luxe-cruisejachten L'Austral en Seabourn Quest, als het expeditieschip National Geographic Explorer komen dan voor het eerst naar Antwerpen. Verder brengt ook de Deutschland ons tussendoor nog een bezoek.

Ook juni wordt een heel drukke maand aan de terminal. We beginnen op 1 juni met de komst van de Bremen. Die wordt op 4 juni gevolgd door de Europa 2 en de dag daarna ligt alweer het volgende schip in Antwerpen, namelijk de Ocean Princess. Veder krijgen we in juni ook nog de Silver Cloud, Europa en Deutschland aan de kaaien.

Tijdens de zomermaanden is het rustiger met in totaal drie aanlopen. In juli bezoeken de Braemar en Saga Pearl II onze stad. Voor de Saga Pearl II zal het de maiden call zijn. Begin Augustus komt ook de Marco Polo nog eens langs.

September wordt opnieuw een drukke maand met zeven aanlopen. Op 7 september brengt de Silver Whisper een bezoek aan Antwerpen. De twee daaropvolgende dagen zal de Prinsendam van Holland America Line aan de kaai liggen, en de dag daarna komt de Europa nog eens langs. Verder meren ook de Explorer, Marco Polo en Hanseatic nog eens aan in Antwerpen en de Discovery van Cruise & Maritime Voyages maakt in september ook haar maiden call.

Van 3 tot en met 5 oktober zal de Schelde afgesloten zijn ter hoogte van Het Steen door een pontonbrug om de Eerste Wereldoorlog te herdenken. De brug zal de rechteroever met de linkeroever verbinden. Op 7 oktober volgt dan een call van de Noorse expeditie-ijsbreker Fram, die na 5 jaar Antwerpen nog eens een bezoek brengt. Een hoogtepunt wordt zeker en vast de maiden call van het Engelse cruiseschip Oriana van P&O Cruises. Met een lengte van 260 meter zal dit het langste cruiseschip zijn dat ooit aan de Scheldekaaien heeft gelegen. Het draaimanoeuvre van het schip beloofd dus zeer imposant te worden.

In November legt de Balmoral nog eens aan in Antwerpen en op 21 december komt de Marco Polo langs voor een bezoek aan de kerstmarkt. Op 25 & 26 december sluiten we net zoals vorig jaar het seizoen af met de cruiseferry Pont-Aven.

Zoals u zelf al wel gemerkt zal hebben volgen de cruiseaanlopen zich dit jaar heel snel op. Op deze blog en op onze website zullen we u zo goed mogelijk op de hoogte houden van de gebeurtenissen.

The official cruise list for 2014 has been released by Cruise Port Antwerp. The cruise season of 2014 seems to become one of the most varied seasons in years. A total of 28 cruise calls are planned with not less than 21 different cruise ships. Six of these ships will come to Antwerp for the very first time. There is also a trend noticeable in the number of overnight calls in the city. With the 11 registered overnight calls this year will set a new record.

On 20 April the cruise season will start with the arrival of our regular visitor Balmoral of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Onwards May the cruise calls follow each other very closely. After 7 years the Japanese cruise ship Asuka II will visit our city again on 3 May. But also on 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 May there will be cruise ships docked in Antwerp. During that week there are not less than three maiden calls. Both luxury cruise yachts L'Austral and Seabourn Quest, and the expedition ship National Geographic Explorer will dock in Antwerp for the first time. In between all these maiden calls the Deutschland will also visit us.

June will also be a very busy month at the terminal. On June 1st we start with the arrival of the Bremen. On the 4th the Europa 2 docks in Antwerp and the day after the next ship, the Ocean Princess, berths already at the terminal. Furthermore the Silver Cloud, Europa and Deutschland will also dock at our quays.

During the summer months it is relatively calm with a total of three cruise calls. In July the Braemar and Saga Pearl II will visit the city. For the Saga Pearl II this will be the maiden call. At the beginning of August the Marco Polo will visit again.

September will once again be a busy month with a total 7 calls. On 7 September the Silver Whisper will visit Antwerp. The following two days the Prinsendam of Holland America Line will be berthed at the quays, and the day after that we will be getting another visit of the Europa. In September the Explorer, Marco Polo and Hanseatic will also visit again, and the Discovery of Cruise & Maritime Voyages will make her maiden call.

On 3, 4 and 5 October the river Scheldt will be blocked due to a pontoon bridge that will be assembled across the river to remember the First World War. The bridge will be placed close to the old fort Het Steen. On 7 October the Norwegian expedition icebreaker Fram will call again at Antwerp after 5 years of absence. A highlight will certainly be the maiden call of the English cruise ship Oriana of P&O Cruises. With a length of 260 meters this will be the longest ship that has ever docked at the Scheldt quays. The turning maneuver promises to be quiet spectacular.

In November the Balmoral will call again at Antwerp and on 21 December the Marco Polo will visit us for our Christmas market. On 25 & 26 December the season will, just like last year, be closed by the cruise ferry Pont-Aven.

Santa Maria in Antwerpen 1958

In augustus 1958 lag het cruiseschip Santa Maria van de Portugese rederij Companhia Colonial de Navegação aan het Zuiderterras in Antwerpen. Het schip maakte een cruise van 11 tot 22 augustus om de passagiers de mogelijkheid te geven de Wereldtentoonstelling in Brussel te bezoeken.

De Santa Maria had een lengte van 186 meter, kon 1296 passagiers vervoeren en had een bemanning van 319 personen. Het schip werd in 1952 gebouwd bij de Hobokense scheepswerf Cockerill in België. Hier werden ook haar twee zusterschepen Vera Cruz en Infante Dom Henrique gebouwd. In 1973 werd de Santa Maria na amper 22 jaar gevaren te hebben gesloopt in Taiwan.

In August 1958 the cruise ship Santa Maria of the Portuguese cruise line Companhia Colonial de Navegação docked in Antwerp at the Zuiderterras. The ship made a cruise from the 11th until the 22nd of August to give the passengers the opportunity to visit the World Exhibition in Brussels.

The Santa Maria had a length of 186 meters, was able to accommodate 1269 passengers and had a crew of 319 people. In 1952 the ship was built at the Cockerill shipyard in Hoboken, Belgium. This yard also built her two sister ships Vera Cruz and Infante Dom Henrique. In 1973, after just 22 years of service, the ship was scrapped in Taiwan.
