Cruiseschepen in Antwerpen: MS Astoria - Na 59 jaar terug in Antwerpen / After 59 years back in Antwerp

NL: Het cruiseschip MS Astoria van de Britse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages lag op zaterdag 11 maart 2017 voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen, maar in 1958 bezocht het schip de stad nog onder een andere naam. Momenteel draagt het 69 jaar oude schip de titel van ‘oudste cruiseschip ter wereld’.

EN: The cruise ship MS Astoria of the British company Cruise & Maritime Voyages was docked in Antwerp for the first time on Saturday 11 March 2017, but in 1958 the ship already visited the city under another name. At the moment the 69 year old ship holds the title of ‘oldest cruise ship in the world’.

NL: Het oudste cruiseschip ter wereld, MS Astoria, bracht Antwerpen op zaterdag 11 maart voor de eerste keer een bezoek. Het 160 meter lange schip van de Britse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages had dit jaar de eer om het cruiseseizoen van 2017 te openen. Toch is het niet echt de allereerste keer dat het schip de stad bezoekt. In 1958, 59 jaar geleden, lag het schip namelijk ook al in Antwerpen onder zijn originele naam MS Stockholm. Dat jaar bezochten verschillende cruiseschepen de Scheldestad naar aanleiding van de toenmalige wereldtentoonstelling in Brussel.

EN: The oldest cruise ship in the world, MS Astoria, visited Antwerp on Saturday 11 March for the first time. The 160 metres long ship of the British company Cruise & Maritime Voyages had the honour to open the cruise season of 2017. But it is actually not the first time that the ship visits the city because in 1958, 59 years ago, the ship visited Antwerp with its original name MS Stockholm. That year several cruise ships visited Antwerp because of the world exposition in Brussels.

NL: Dat het schip na 59 jaar nog eens in Antwerpen ligt is een absoluut record. MS Astoria viert dit jaar haar 69^ste verjaardag en voor een cruiseschip is dat zeer uniek. Een doorsnee cruiseschip vaart namelijk ongeveer 40 jaar rond voor het gesloopt wordt. Rond die leeftijd lopen de onderhoudskosten meestal te hoog op om het schip rendabel te houden. MS Astoria is echter al bijna dertig jaar ouder en zal al zeker tot en met 2018 verder blijven varen. Volgend jaar in maart wordt het schip trouwens opnieuw verwacht in Antwerpen.

Het moet wel gezegd worden dat het schip door de jaren heen wel wat veranderd is. In 1989 besliste de toenmalige eigenaar om de volledige bovenbouw van het schip te verwijderen en opnieuw op te bouwen in de vorm van een toenmalig modern cruiseschip. Bij deze grote ombouw werd enkel de originele romp behouden.

Aan boord is het duidelijk dat het schip een lange geschiedenis met zich meedraagt. In het grote restaurant, dat zich nog in de originele romp bevindt en omgeven is door kleine patrijspoorten hangt een gezellige sfeer. Maar ook in de hogere, nieuwere dekken zijn er verschillende aangename lounges en bars te vinden. Op het buitendek, onder de reddingsboten, is de gebogen vorm van het schip heel duidelijk. Dat is iets wat vandaag de dag nog maar bij elke schepen te merken is.

EN: The fact that the ship returns to Antwerp after 59 years is an absolute record. This year MS Astoria celebrates her 69^th anniversary and for a cruise ship that is very unique. Normally cruise ships sail around for about 40 years after which they get scrapped. Around that age the maintenance costs become too high to stay profitable. But MS Astoria is almost 30 years older than that and will keep cruising until at least 2018. Next year in March the ship is also expected back in Antwerp.

But it has to be said that the ship underwent some refurbishment over the years. In 1989 the owner decided to remove the complete upper structure and rebuilt it in the style of the modern cruise ship of that time. During this extensive rebuild only the original hull was kept.

On board it is clear that the ship is carrying a long history along. In the main restaurant, that is located in the original hull and is surrounded with small portholes, there is a cosy atmosphere. But also on the higher, newer decks, there are several pleasant lounges and bars. On the outside decks, below the lifeboats, one can clearly see the curve of the ship. That is something you rarely see on ships these days.

Een bewogen geschiedenis / An eventfull history

NL: Het schip werd tussen 1946 en 1948 in het Zweedse Göteborg gebouwd als MS Stockholm voor Swedish America Line en werd ingezet op de Noord-Atlantische route tussen Göteborg en New York. In 1956, toen het schip nog maar acht jaar oud was, haalde het op deze route het wereldnieuws. Op 25 juli van dat jaar botste het namelijk voor de Amerikaanse kust in dichte mist met het Italiaanse passagiersschip Andrea Doria. MS Stockholm boorde zich met haar boeg 12 meter in de romp van het andere schip. Bij de aanvaring kwamen 51 mensen om het leven, het merendeel daarvan aan boord van de Andrea Doria.

Na de botsing begon de Andrea Doria water te maken en het schip zonk de volgende dag. MS Stockholm had meer geluk en kon met haar zwaar gehavende boeg nog zonder problemen terugkeren naar New York. Tijdens de aanvaring leek ook de originele scheepsbel van de Stockholm verloren te zijn gegaan, maar twee jaar geleden dook ze plots opnieuw op in een privécollectie en nu wordt ze aan boord van MS Astoria tentoongesteld.

EN: The ship was built between 1946 and 1948 in the Swedish city of Gothenburg as MS Stockholm for Swedish America Line and was deployed on the North-Atlantic route between Gothenburg and New York. In 1956, when the ship was only eight years old, it became world new on this route. On July 25^th of that year it collided with the Italian passenger ship Andrea Doria. MS Stockholm pushed her bow 12 metres into the hull of the other ship. The collision resulted in 51 casualties, the majority of those were on board Andrea Doria.

After the collision Andrea Doria started to take on water and the ship sank the next day. MS Stockholm was luckier and was able to return to New York without any problems notwithstanding her severely damaged bow. It was also believed that during the collision the ship’s bell was lost, but two years ago it suddenly appeared in a private collection and it is now on display on board MS Astoria.

NL: Nadat haar boeg hersteld werd hervatte MS Stockholm haar trans-Atlantische overvaarten en voer ze nog tot 1960 voor Swedish America Line. Dat jaar werd het schip verkocht aan de toenmalige Duitse Democratische Republiek (DDR) en kreeg het de naam MS Völkerfreundschaft. Daarvoor voer het schip in lijndienst maar voer het ook regelmatig cruises. Na 25 jaar werd het schip in 1985 opnieuw verkocht en daarna is het nooit langer dan een paar jaar bij dezelfde eigenaar gebleven.

In totaal heeft het schip al 11 verschillende namen gehad. De laatste verandering gebeurde nog in 2016 toen Cruise & Maritime Voyages het schip overnam en de naam veranderde van MS Azores in MS Astoria.

EN: After they repaired her bow MS Stockholm renewed her sailings on the trans-Atlantic route and sailed for Swedish America Line until 1960. That year the ship was sold to the former German Democratic Republic (GDR / DDR) and was renamed MS Völkerfreundschaft. The ship sailed in regular service for them but also sailed some cruises. After 25 years the ship was sold again in 1985 and after that it didn’t stay with one owner for more than a few years.

In total the ship has now had 11 different names. The last changes occurred in 2016 when Cruise & Maritime Voyages took command of the vessel and changed its name from MS Azores to MS Astoria.
