Colombian Tall Ship ARC Gloria in Antwerpen 2024

NL: Het Tall Ship ARC Gloria van de Colombiaanse Marine meerde eind mei 2024 voor de tweede keer aan in Antwerpen. Het schip bleef vier dag liggen aan het cruiseponton bij Het Steen. Iedereen die dat wou kon het schip gratis bezoeken.

EN: The Colombian Navy's Tall Ship ARC Gloria docked in Antwerp for the second time at the end of May 2024. The ship stayed docked at the cruise pontoon near Het Steen for four days. Anyone who wanted to could visit the ship for free.

NL: De 76 meter lange driemaster ARC Gloria van de Colombiaanse Marine meerde op 31 mei om 09:30u aan bij het cruiseponton aan Het Steen. Het opleidingsschip werd die ochtend opgewacht door een marine band en een delegatie van de Belgische Marine. Ook de ARC Gloria had muziek bij en speelde tijdens de aankomst haar eigen hymne ‘Himno del ARC Buque Gloria’. Vanop het cruiseponton en de kaairand juichten de Antwerpse Colombianen het schip toe met hun Colombiaanse vlaggen.

De officieren aan boord salueerde bij de aankomst en enkele cadetten klommen, gekleed in de kleuren van de Colombiaanse vlag, in het touwwerk. Ondanks het slechte weer was er toch een uitgelaten sfeer tijdens het aanmeren.

EN: The 76-metre three-master ARC Gloria of the Colombian Navy moored at the cruise pontoon near Het Steen at 09:30h on 31 May. The training ship was welcomed by a navy band and a delegation from the Belgian Navy. The ARC Gloria also carried music and played its own anthem 'Himno del ARC Buque Gloria' during the arrival. From the cruise pontoon and quayside, the Antwerp Colombians cheered the ship with their Colombian flags.

The officers on board saluted on arrival and some of the cadets, dressed in the colours of the Colombian flag, climbed the ropes. Despite the bad weather, there was still an elated atmosphere during the docking.

NL: Nadat de loopbruggen gelegd werden, ging eerst een de delegatie van de Belgische Marine aan boord om ARC Gloria officieel te verwelkomen in Antwerpen. Colombia is voor Antwerpen zeer belangrijk omdat het de belangrijkste Europese invoerhaven is van tropisch fruit zoals bananen, ananassen en avocado’s. Antwerpen is ook de grootste koffiehaven ter wereld. Alle magazijnen samengeteld ligt er in Antwerpen genoeg koffie opgeslagen voor 27 miljard kopjes.

EN: After the gangways were laid, a delegation of the Belgian Navy first boarded the ship to officially welcome ARC Gloria to Antwerp. Colombia is very important for Antwerp as it is the main European import port of tropical fruits such as bananas, pineapples and avocados. Antwerp is also the world's largest coffee port. All warehouses combined, there is enough coffee stored in Antwerp for 27 billion cups.

Bezoek aan boord / Visit on board

NL: Om 11:00u, slechts iets meer dan een uur na de aankomst, mochten de eerste bezoekers het schip al betreden. Aan boord stond de vriendelijke bemanning klaar om iedereen te ontvangen. Naast een rondleiding over de buitendekken was het ook mogelijk om het kleine museum aan boord te bezoeken met onder andere een buste van Admiraal José Padilla Lopez, een sleutelfiguur in de onafhankelijkheidsoorlog van Colombia. Daarnaast was het ook mogelijk om de brug te bezoeken. Op het overdekte achterdek stonden verschillende standjes opgesteld waar Colombiaanse snuisterijen en souvenirs van het schip verkocht werden. Het schip was elke dag dat het in Antwerpen lag te bezoeken.

EN: At 11:00h, only a little over an hour after arrival, the first visitors were already allowed to board the ship. On board, the friendly crew was ready to welcome everyone. Besides a tour of the outer decks, it was also possible to visit the small museum on board which includes a bust of Admiral José Padilla Lopez, a key figure in Colombia's war of independence. In addition, it was also possible to visit the bridge. Several stalls were set up on the covered aft deck selling Colombian trinkets and souvenirs from the ship. The ship could be visited every day it was in Antwerp.

NL: ARC Gloria is momenteel bezig aan een tour langs West- en Noord-Europa om de 200^ste verjaardag te vieren van de Colombiaanse Marine. Het schip kwam vanuit Barcelona rechtstreeks naar Antwerpen gevaren en zet van hieruit op 3 juni koers naar Stockholm waar het op 11 juni verwacht wordt. Nadien wordt Kiel in Duitsland bezocht tijdens hun maritiem festival ‘Kieler Woche’. Van daaruit gaat het richting Amsterdam en nadien ook nog Londen.

De Stad Antwerpen hoopt om ARC Gloria opnieuw te mogen verwelkomen tijdens volgende editie van de Tall Ships Races in Antwerpen in 2026. Momenteel heeft het schip hier nog niet voor bevestigd.

EN: ARC Gloria is currently on a tour of western and northern Europe to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Colombian Navy. The ship sailed from Barcelona directly to Antwerp, from where it sets sail on 3 June to Stockholm where it is expected on 11 June. Afterwards, it will visit Kiel in Germany during their maritime festival 'Kieler Woche'. From there, it will head for Amsterdam and then also London.

The City of Antwerp hopes to welcome ARC Gloria again during next edition of the Tall Ships Races in Antwerp in 2026. Currently, the ship has not yet confirmed for this.

MS Clio - Opening Cruiseseizoen 2024 / Opening Cruise Season 2024

NL: Het kleine expeditiecruiseschip MS Clio van de Amerikaanse rederij Grand Circle Cruise Line opende op 26 april het cruiseseizoen van 2024 in Antwerpen. Het is meteen ook het kleinste schip voor dit jaar.

EN: The small expedition cruise ship MS Clio of the American company Grand Circle Cruise opened the 2024 cruise season in Antwerp on 26 April. It is also the smallest ship that will visit this year.

NL: Met haar lengte van 100 meter is MS Clio het kleinste cruiseschip dat ooit een cruiseseizoen mocht openen in Antwerpen. In 2023 lag het schip al twee keer in Antwerpen en in 2024 staan er in totaal drie aanlopen gepland. In totaal heeft het schip plaats voor 89 passagiers in 45 cabines en staan er 60 bemanningsleden voor hen klaar.

Het schip werd in 1998 gebouwd in Frankrijk bij de werf ‘Chantiers Alstom Leroux Naval’ in St. Malo als ‘MS Le Levant’ voor de luxerederij Compagnie Du Ponant, tegenwoordig kortweg bekend als  Ponant. Le Levant vervoegde in 1998 het enige andere schip van de rederij: het zeiljacht ‘Le Ponant’.

‘Le Levant’ bleef in de vloot van Ponant tot 2012 waarna ze volledig heringericht werd en overgedragen werd aan Paul Gaugin Cruises. Voor die rederij voer het schip onder de naam ‘MS Tere Moana’ cruises naar Tahiti, Polynesië en Oceanië.

In december 2015 veranderde het schip dan, voorlopig voor de laaste keer, van eigenaar en werd het overgenomen door Grand Circle Cruise Line als MS Clio.

EN: At 100 metres long, MS Clio is the smallest cruise ship ever allowed to open a cruise season in Antwerp. The ship was already in Antwerp twice in 2023 and a total of three calls are planned in 2024. In total, the ship has room for 89 passengers in 45 cabins and 60 crew members are waiting for them.

The ship was built in 1998 in France at the shipyard 'Chantiers Alstom Leroux Naval' in St Malo as 'MS Le Levant' for the luxury cruise line Compagnie Du Ponant, today known simply as Ponant. Le Levant joined the company's only other ship in 1998: the sailing yacht 'Le Ponant'.

'Le Levant' remained in Ponant's fleet until 2012 after which she was completely refitted and transferred to Paul Gaugin Cruises. For that cruise line, the ship sailed cruises to Tahiti, Polynesia and Oceania under the name 'MS Tere Moana'.

In December 2015, the ship once again changed hands, for the last time for now, and was taken over by Grand Circle Cruise Line as MS Clio.

Antwerpen - Officiële Cruiselijst 2024 / Official Cruise List 2024

NL: MS Clio komt op 26 april als eerste zeecruiseschip voor 2024 naar Antwerpen. In totaal worden er dit jaar 24 aanlopen verwacht waarvan 5 schepen voor de eerste keer naar de Scheldestad zullen komen.

EN: MS Clio will come to Antwerp on 26 April as the first sea cruise ship for 2024. A total of 24 calls are expected this year, of which five ships will come to the city for the first time.

NL: Dit jaar laat het eerste zeecruiseschip langer op zich wachten. Op vrijdag 26 april komt MS Clio naar Antwerpen. Het kleinste cruiseschip voor 2024 opent dit jaar het cruiseseizoen en zal in mei nog twee keer terugkomen. Diezelfde maand zal ook het luxecruiseschip Seabourn Ovation nog een bezoek brengen aan de stad.

In juni komen er in het tweede deel van de maand vier schepen kort na elkaar: MS Ambition, MS Europa, MS Hamburg en ook het grootste cruiseschip voor 2024, MS Marina, met haar lengte van 238 meter.

De eerste twee ‘maiden calls’ voor 2024 zullen plaats vinden in juli. De Amerikaanse luxerederij Regent Seven Seas Cruises lijkt de weg gevonden te hebben naar Antwerpen. Tot nu toe kwam enkel hun Seven Seas Navigator naar de stad, maar dit jaar sturen ze drie van hun andere schepen stroomopwaarts. Seven Seas Mariner en Seven Seas Voyager bezoeken Antwerpen in juli. Het derde schip, Seven Seas Splendor, bezoekt ons begin augustus voor de eerste keer. Begin augustus zal ook MS Europa 2 Antwerpen opnieuw een bezoek brengen.

EN: This year, the first sea cruise ship is taking longer to arrive. MS Clio visit Antwerp on Friday 26 April. The smallest cruise ship for 2024 opens the cruise season this year and will return twice more in May. That same month, the luxury cruise ship Seabourn Ovation will also visit the city.

In June, four ships will visit in quick succession in the second part of the month: MS Ambition, MS Europa, MS Hamburg and also the largest cruise ship for 2024, MS Marina, with its length of 238 metres.

The first two 'maiden calls' for 2024 will take place in July. US luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises seems to have found its way to Antwerp. Until now, only their Seven Seas Navigator came to the city, but this year they are sending three of their other ships upstream. Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Voyager will visit Antwerp in July. The third ship, Seven Seas Splendor, will visit us for the first time in early August. MS Europa 2 will also visit Antwerp again in early August.

NL: Azamara stuurt begin september hun nieuwste schip, MS Azamara Onward, voor de eerste keer richting Antwerpen voor een overnachting. De laatste van de 5 maiden calls staat midden oktober gepland voor MS Sirena van Oceania Cruises. Dit schip is een zusterschip van MS Azamara Onward. Beide schepen werden eind jaren ‘90 gebouwd voor Renaissance Cruises.

De rest van het najaar bestaat uit aanlopen van oude bekenden. Zo bezoek MS Ambition van Ambassador Cruise Line de stad nog drie keer. Ook MS Artania van Phoenix Reisen komt nog drie keer naar Antwerpen en zal op 19 december het cruiseseizoen ook afsluiten. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines komt dit jaar maar één keer naar Antwerpen, maar wel opnieuw met MS Balmoral. Het zal de eerste aanloop zijn van het schip sinds 2019.

Zoals steeds is de info onder voorbehoud van wijzigingen en kunnen er in de loop van het jaar nog extra aanlopen bijkomen.

EN: Azamara is sending their newest ship, MS Azamara Onward, to Antwerp for the first time for an overnight stay in early September. The last of the 5 maiden calls is scheduled for MS Sirena of Oceania Cruises in mid-October. This ship is a sister ship to MS Azamara Onward. Both ships were built in the late 1990s for Renaissance Cruises.

The rest of the autumn consists of calls from old acquaintances. For instance, MS Ambition of Ambassador Cruise Line will visit the city three more times. Phoenix Reisen's MS Artania will also visit Antwerp three more times and will also close the cruise season on 19 December. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines will come to Antwerp only once this year, but again with MS Balmoral. It will be the ship's first call since 2019.

Marine/Navy - HNLMS Groningen in Antwerpen

NL: Het Nederlandse patrouilleschip HNLMS Groningen P843 van de Koninklijke Marine lag begin februari 2024 aangemeerd aan het cruiseponton in Antwerpen. Het schip kwam op vrijdag 2 februari aan rond 10:00u en bleef liggen tot dinsdag 5 februari 10:00u. Het doel van het bezoek was recreatie voor de bemanning.

Onze collega Tibo Deprest van onze partnerwebsite CruiseschepenInZeebrugge.be was dit weekend in Antwerpen en kon de onderstaande foto’s maken.

EN: The Dutch patrol ship HNLMS Groningen P843 of the Royal Netherlands Navy was docked at the cruise pontoon in Antwerp in early February 2024. The ship arrived on Friday February 2nd at 10:00h and remained moored until Tuesday February 5th 10:00h. The purpose of the visit was recreation for the crew.

NL: HLNMS Groningen werd op 21 april 2011 gedoopt en kwam officieel in dienst op 29 november 2013. Het is het vierde en laatste schip van de Hollandklasse. De schepen werden ontworpen als Ocean Patrol Vessels en worden onder andere ingezet om te surveilleren in de territoriale wateren. Ze voeren ook vaak douanetaken uit en houden grip op de visserij en de milieubescherming.

De vier schepen zijn elk 108 meter lang en 16 meter breed en halen een snelheid van 22 knopen of 40,7 km/u. Aan boord is standaard een 50-koppige bemanning. Achteraan het schip bevind zich een helikopterplatform en een hangaar waar een helikopter van het type NH90 is past.

In april 2016 lag HNLMS Holland ook voor enkele dagen in Antwerpen. Toen lag het schip nog aangemeerd aan de oude cruiseterminal aan het Zuiderterras.

EN: HLNMS Groningen was christened on 21 April 2011 and officially entered service on 29 November 2013. It is the fourth and last ship of the Holland class. The ships were designed as Ocean Patrol Vessels and are used, among other things, to conduct surveillance in the territorial waters. They also often perform customs duties and keep a grip on fisheries and environmental protection.

The four vessels are each 108 metres long and 16 metres wide and reach speeds of 22 knots or 40.7 km/h. On board is a 50-strong crew as standard. At the back of the ship is a helicopter platform and hangar where an NH90-type helicopter can be stored.

In April 2016, one of the sister ships, HNLMS Holland, also visited Antwerp for a few days. Back then, the ship was still docked at the old cruise terminal on Zuiderterras.

MS Ambition sluit Cruiseseizoen 2023 af / MS Ambition closes Cruise Season 2023

NL: MS Ambition van de Engelse rederij Ambassador Cruise Line sloot op 12 & 13 december het cruiseseizoen van 2023 af met een onverwachte extra aanloop. In totaal vonden er dit jaar 23 zeecruiseaanlopen plaats, goed voor rond 16.000 passagiers.

EN: MS Ambition of the UK cruise line Ambassador Cruise Line closed the 2023 cruise season on 12 & 13 December with an unexpected extra call. A total of 23 sea cruise calls took place this year, accounting for around 16.000 passengers.

NL: MS Ambition is de nieuwste aanwinst van de nieuwe Engelse rederij Ambassador Cruise Line. De rederij is de herrijzenis van Cruise & Maritime Voyages, die door de Coronacrisis failliet ging. MS Ambition kwam in 2022 bij hun vloot en was voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen te zien op 19 oktober 2023.

Met in totaal 23 zeecruiseaanlopen en rond 16.000 passagiers was 2023 een mooi cruisejaar. Het lijkt erop dat de cruise-industrie zich na enkele moeilijke jaren terug gestabiliseerd heeft. Er kwamen 17 verschillende schepen naar de Scheldestad van 16 verschillende rederijen en in totaal werden er 36 ligdagen geregistreerd.

EN: MS Ambition is the latest addition to new UK cruise line Ambassador Cruise Line. The cruise line is the resurrection of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which went bankrupt due to the Corona crisis. MS Ambition joined their fleet in 2022 and was first seen in Antwerp on 19 October 2023.

With a total of 23 sea cruise calls and around 16.000 passengers, 2023 was a good cruise season. It seems the cruise industry has stabilised again after a few difficult years. 17 different ships from 16 different cruise lines came to the city, accounting for a total of 36 berth days.

Na 24 Jaar Opnieuw in Antwerpen / After 24 Years Back in Antwerp

NL: Met haar paarse livrei is het schip een opvallende gast in de stad. Door de jaren heen heeft het schip al met 5 verschillende huisstijlen rondgevaren. In 1999 kwam het schip in de vaart voor Festival Cruises als MS Mistral. Nog voor haar allereerst reis, of Maiden Voyage, was het schip eind juni 1999 voor enkele dagen te gast in Antwerpen. Het eerste nieuwbouwschip van de rederij werd in de Scheldestad voorgesteld aan de pers en de reisagenten. Op 17 juli startte MS Mistral haar 7-daagse Maiden Voyage vanuit Genua.

Na het faillissement van Festival Cruises in 2004 werd het schip gekocht door de Spaanse rederij Ibero Cruceros als MS Grand Mistral. Als onderdeel van de Carnival Cooperation werd in 2014 besloten dat Ibero Cruceros volledig zou samengaan met Costa Cruises. Hierdoor werd het schip omgedoopt tot Costa neoRiviera. Na enkele jaren bij Costa werd het schip doorgegeven aan hun dochterrederij AIDA Cruises als MS AIDAmira waarvoor het cruises naar Afrika voer.

In april 2022 werd het schip gekocht door Ambassador Cruise Line. Vanaf september 2022 werd het schip voor 6 maanden gecharterd door de Schotse Regering om te dienen als tijdelijke onderkomst voor Oekraïense vluchtelingen in Glasgow. Op 11 mei 2023 werd het schip uiteindelijk gedoopt in Newcastle. Op 19 oktober 2023 kwam het schip na 24 jaar terug naar Antwerpen, dit keer voor de eerste keer als MS Ambition.

Oorspronkelijk zou MS Ambition het cruiseseizoen van 2023 afsluiten met haar aanloop op 9 en 10 december. Op het laatste moment werd echter beslist om het schip op 12 en 13 december opnieuw naar de Scheldestad te sturen. Bij het tweede schip van de rederij, MS Ambience, werd tijdens een gepland werfbezoek in Bremerhaven schade ontdekt aan een schroefas waardoor het schip tot begin januari in het droogdok moet blijven. Om de gedupeerde passagiers tegemoet te komen werden de cruises van MS Ambition aangepast. Er werd beslist om Hamburg in de volgende cruise te vervangen door Antwerpen. Hierdoor heeft MS Ambition maar liefst 3 keer achterelkaar heen en weer gevaren tussen Antwerpen en Tilbury in Engeland.

EN: With her purple livery, the ship is a striking guest in thr city. Over the years, the ship has sailed around with 5 different house styles. In 1999, the ship entered service for Festival Cruises as MS Mistral. Even before her Maiden Voyage the ship visited Antwerp for a few days at the end of June 1999. The cruise line’s first new-build ship was presented to the press and travel agents at the Scheldt Quays. On 17 July, MS Mistral started her 7-day Maiden Voyage from Genua.

Following the bankruptcy of Festival Cruises in 2004, the ship was bought by Spanish cruise line Ibero Cruceros as MS Grand Mistral. As part of the Carnival Cooperation, it was decided in 2014 that Ibero Cruceros would fully merge with Costa Cruises. As a result, the ship was renamed Costa neoRiviera. After several years with Costa, the ship was passed on to their subsidiary AIDA Cruises as MS AIDAmira for which it sailed cruises to Africa.

In April 2022, the ship was bought by Ambassador Cruise Line. From September 2022, the ship was chartered for six months by the Scottish Government to serve as a temporary shelter for Ukrainian refugees in Glasgow. On 11 May 2023, the ship was finally christened in Newcastle. On 19 October 2023, the ship returned to Antwerp after 24 years, this time for the first time as MS Ambition.

Originally, MS Ambition was supposed to close the 2023 cruise season with her call on 9 and 10 December. However, a last-minute decision was made to send the ship to Antwerp again on 12 and 13 December. On the cruise line’s second ship, MS Ambience, damage to a propeller shaft was discovered during a planned visit at the shipyard in Bremerhaven, requiring the ship to remain in dry dock until early January. To accommodate affected passengers, MS Ambition's cruises were adjusted. It was decided to replace Hamburg with Antwerp in the next cruise. As a result, MS Ambition sailed back and forth between Antwerp and Tilbury in England as many as three times in a row.

Vooruitblik naar 2024 / Looking Ahead to 2024

NL: Ook in 2024 staat MS Ambition verschillende keren gepland voor een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Momenteel staan er in totaal 24 zeecruiseaanlopen gepland en zullen 5 cruiseschepen voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komen. Drie daarvan zijn schepen van dezelfde luxerederij: Regent Seven Seas. Het cruiseseizoen voor 2024 zal op 19 april geopend worden door Seabourn Ovation van de luxerederij Seabourn. Alle informatie is zoals altijd wel onder voorbehoud van wijzigingen.

Noorderterras – Restauratie / Restauration

NL: Het Noorderterras en de bijbehorende geklasseerde hangars aan de cruiseterminal worden de komende jaren gerestaureerd. Hierdoor zal het wandelterras tot het voorjaar van 2025 afgesloten worden. Naast de restauratie zal het terras ook vergroend worden met plantenbakken met wilde grassen en struiken.

EN: The walking terrace ‘Noorderterras’ and associated listed hangars at the cruise terminal will be restored over the next few years. As a result, the walkway terrace will be closed until the spring of 2025. In addition to the restoration, the terrace will also be made greener with planters of wild grasses and shrubs.

NL: Het Noorderterras en de aangrenzende hangars ter hoogte van de cruiseterminal zijn in behoorlijk slechte staat. Enkele jaren geleden werden er om veiligheidsredenen al noodherstellingen uitgevoerd aan de daken. Nu start de grondige renovatie en vooral restauratie van de geklasseerde hangars.

In totaal wordt 9 miljoen euro uitgetrokken om het wandelterras, de hangars en de omgeving in ere te herstellen. De originele façades van de hangars aan de kant van de Jordaenskaai worden volledig gerestaureerd en de ontbrekende elementen worden nagemaakt in de originele vorm. De oorspronkelijk kleur, zijnde een midden-grijstint, zal terug zichtbaar gemaakt worden. De lichtstraten in de daken zullen ook verder opengemaakt worden zodat het licht de kaaivlakte beter bereikt. Er wordt ook akoestische isolatie voorzien om het galmen onder de hangars tegen te gaan. Op kaainiveau zullen de restanten van de oude burchtmuur zichtbaar gemaakt worden tot op een diepte van 2,5 meter. Er zullen ook kleinere exporuimtes en paviljoenen voor de jeugd voorzien worden.

EN: The Noorderterras and adjacent hangars near the cruise terminal are in pretty bad shape. Several years ago, emergency repairs were already made to the roofs for safety reasons. Now the thorough renovation and especially restoration of the listed hangars is starting.

A total of 9 million euros will be allocated to restore the terrace, the hangars and the surrounding area. The original facades of the hangars on the side of the Jordaenskaai will be fully restored and the missing elements recreated in their original form. The original color, being a mid-gray tone, will be made visible again. The skylights in the roofs will also be opened up further so that the light reaches the quayside better. Acoustic insulation will be provided to prevent reverberation under the hangars. At quay level, the remains of the old castle wall will be made visible to a depth of 2.5 meters. Smaller exhibition spaces and pavilions for youth will also be provided.

‘Kaailine’

NL: Het terras zelf wordt ook grondig onderhanden genomen. De staalplaat wordt tot op het ruwe staal blootgelegd waarna ze bewerkt wordt en er een nieuwe antislip laag op wordt aangebracht. De balustrades worden ook vervangen en krijgen bovenaan een houten leunrand. De grootste verandering wordt de inrichting van het terras zelf. Er zullen namelijk grote plantvakken met siergrassen, vaste planten en heesters komen. De plantensoorten die hiervoor gebruikt zullen worden, werden speciaal voor het zilte klimaat aan de Schelde gekozen. Er wordt ook wateropvang voorzien van de afdaken, zodat dat regenwater gebruikt kan worden voor de planten op het terras.

Om het extra gewicht van de planten te kunnen dragen wordt het wandelterras langs onder extra verstevigd. Naast de planten zullen er ook extra trappen voorzien worden die de verbinding met de kaaivlakte maken. Het project kreeg de naam ‘Kaailine’, wat geïnspireerd is op de ‘Highline’ in New York. Daar werd een oude verhoogde spoorwegbedding omgevormd tot een park.

EN: The terrace itself is also being thoroughly reworked. The steel sheet will be exposed down to the raw steel after which it will be treated and a new anti-slip coating applied. The railings will also be replaced and get a wooden handrail at the top. The biggest change will be the layout of the terrace itself. There will be large planting beds with ornamental grasses, perennials and shrubs. The plant species that will be used for this were specially chosen for the salty climate at the river Scheldt. Water collection will also be provided from the canopies so that that rainwater can be used for the plants on the terrace.

To support the extra weight of the plants, the walking terrace will be reinforced along the bottom. In addition to the plants, additional steps will be provided to connect to the quay terrace. The project was named "Kaailine," which was inspired by the "Highline" in New York. There, an old elevated railroad bed was transformed into a park.

Timing

NL: Het Noorderterras werd op maandag 18 september afgesloten voor de start van de werken. De restauratie van de hangars en het wandelterras zullen duren tot het voorjaar van 2025. Tot die tijd zal enkel het voorste deel van het terras aan de kant van Het Steen, met de stenen balustrade, toegankelijk zijn voor het publiek. Na de restauratie starten aansluitend de werken aan de kaaivlakte tussen het Steenplein en het Noorderterras. Het volledige project staat gepland om opgeleverd te worden in het voorjaar van 2027. Wie foto’s komt nemen van de cruiseschepen zal zich dus de komende jaren wat moeten behelpen.

EN: The North Terrace was closed on Monday, September 18, for the start of works. The restoration of the hangars and the walking terrace will last until spring 2025. Until then, only the front part of the terrace on the side of Het Steen, with the stone balustrade, will be accessible to the public. After the restoration, works on the quay area between the Steenplein and the Noorderterras will start next. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2027. AIDAaura in Antwerpen – Allerlaatste Cruise / Final Cruise

NL: MS AIDAaura van de Duitse rederij AIDA Cruises lag op 18 en 19 september 2023 voor de laatste keer in Antwerpen. Het schip bezoekt de stad tijdens haar allerlaatste cruise. Vanuit Antwerpen zet het schip koers op Bremerhaven waar de laatste passagiers zullen ontschepen.

EN: MS AIDAaura of the German cruise line AIDA Cruises visited Antwerp for the last time on September 18 and 19, 2023. The ship will visit the city on her very last cruise. From Antwerp, the ship sets sail for Bremerhaven where the last passengers will disembark.

NL: MS AIDAaura meerde op maandagmorgen (18/09) rond 09:30u aan aan het cruiseponton voor het Noorderterras na een zwaaimanoeuvre voor het Zuiderterras. Het was de vierde keer dat het kleurrijke cruiseschip te zien was in Antwerpen, maar het was dit keer ook de laatste keer. Begin januari 2023 kondigde de Duitse rederij AIDA Cruises namelijk aan dat het schip verkocht werd.

EN: MS AIDAaura moored at the cruise pontoon in front of the Noorderterras around 09:30 on Monday morning (18/09) after turning in front of the Zuiderterras. It was the fourth time the colourful cruise ship could be seen in Antwerp, but this time it was also the last. In early January 2023 the German cruise line AIDA Cruises announced that the ship was being sold.

Laatste kleine schip / Last small ship

NL: Na AIDAcara en AIDAvita verlaat met de verkoop van AIDAaura het laatste kleine schip de vloot van AIDA. De drie schepen werden de laatste jaren ingezet voor het ‘AIDA Selection’ programma. Tijdens die cruises worden de minder gangbare havens bezocht. Hiertoe behoorde ook Antwerpen. Ondanks het feit dat AIDA tussen 2010 en 2012 met verschillende schepen van de grotere Sphinx-Klasse de stad bezocht, werd uiteindelijk door de rederij besloten dat de schepen te groot waren om Antwerpen te blijven bezoeken. Hierdoor is de kans klein dat AIDA de komende jaren nog in Antwerpen te zien zal zijn. Het AIDA Selection-concept wordt wel overgenomen door de andere grotere schepen, maar verschillende havens zullen daarmee niet meer bezocht kunnen worden.

EN: After AIDAcara and AIDAvita, the sale of AIDAaura marks the last small ship leaving AIDA's fleet. The three ships were used in recent years for the 'AIDA Selection' program. During those cruises the less common ports are visited. These also included Antwerp. NL: Ondertussen is ook de koper van het schip bekend. De Griekse rederij Miray Cruises heeft AIDAaura gekocht om er een 3-jaar-durende wereldcruise mee te organiseren. Met hun nieuwe rederij ‘Life At Sea Cruises’ zal het schip, dat omgedoopt wordt tot MS Lara, maar liefst 382 havens bezoeken in 140 landen en 7 continenten. De prijs voor dit avontuur start bij 77.026 Dollar. De cruise start op 1 november 2023 in Istanbul en eindigt op 1 november 2026 ook weer in de stad na 1059 dagen.

Het vaarplan werd al enkele keren aangepast maar momenteel staat ook Antwerpen tussen de te bezoeken havens. MS Lara zou Antwerpen bezoeken op 2 & 3 juni 2026, tegen het einde van de wereldcruise.
