NL: De Stad Antwerpen wil een nieuwe cruiseterminal bouwen aan
het Noorderterras. Die zou de huidige terminal binnen een paar jaar gaan
vervangen. Alle toeristen, waaronder ook de cruisepassagiers, zullen dan
ontvangen worden op Het Steen dat volledig gerenoveerd zal worden.
EN: The City of Antwerp wants to build a new cruise terminal at the
Noorderterras. The new terminal will replace the current one within a few years.
All tourist, including the cruise passengers, will then be welcomed at the medieval
fortress Het Steen, which will get fully renovated.
NL: Er werd al enige tijd over gespeculeerd, maar de kogel
lijkt nu echt door de kerk te zijn. De Antwerpse cruiseterminal aan het
Zuiderterras zal binnen enkele jaren verdwijnen en vervangen worden door een
nieuwe terminal aan het Noorderterras, aan de andere kant van het
Flandriaponton. Door de heraanleg van de Scheldekaaien moet de huidige terminal
afgebroken worden. Daardoor zouden de cruiseschepen opnieuw gaan aanmeren aan
het Noorderterras bij Het Steen, zoals dat begin jaren '90 het geval was.
EN: There was much speculation about
it, but it seems like the decision has finally been made. The cruise terminal
of Antwerp, located at the Zuiderterras, will disappear within a few years and
will be replaced by a new terminal at the Noorderterras, on the other side of
the Flandria pontoon. The terminal has to be demolished due to the renovation
of the Scheldt quays. The cruise ships will then once again dock at the Noorderterras,
like it was during the early nineties.

NL: De nieuwe cruiseterminal zal in verbinding staan met Het
Steen. Het middeleeuwse fort, dat gebouwd werd tussen 1200 en 1225, zal
daarvoor volledig gerenoveerd worden. Daarbij wordt nog gekeken of de
aangebouwde zalen uit de jaren '50 behouden zullen worden of niet. Voor de
renovatiewerken, die in 2018 van start zullen gaan, wordt acht miljoen euro
uitgetrokken. Tegen 2020 zou het gebouw de uitvalsbasis moeten worden voor alle
toeristische activiteiten in Antwerpen. Zo zullen ook de dienst toerisme en de stadswinkel
op termijn ondergebracht worden in Het Steen.
Schepen van Toerisme Koen Kennis
liet weten dat momenteel nog onderzocht wordt hoe de cruiseschepen zullen afmeren
aan de nieuwe terminal. Zo wordt er bekeken of er eventueel gewerkt zou kunnen
worden met pontons zoals in Liverpool het geval is. Daar leggen de
cruiseschepen zich niet rechtstreeks aan de kaai maar aan een ponton dat zich
op een kleine afstand in de rivier bevindt.

connected to Het Steen. The medieval fortress, built between 1200 and 1225,
will be fully renovated. At the moment it is still undecided if the built-on
halls from the fifties will be kept or not. Eight million Euros have been
reserved for the renovation, which will start in 2018. By 2020 the building
should become the centre point for all the tourist activities in Antwerp. Both
the tourist office and the city shop will be stationed in Het Steen.
The Alderman of Tourism Koen Kennis said that
it is still being researched how the cruise ships will berth at the new
terminal. They are investigating if it would be possible to work with pontoons
like in Liverpool. There the ships don't dock directly at the quays but at a
pontoon located in the river at a small distance from the quay.

Zuiderterras
NL: In 2003 werd de eerste cruiseterminal van Antwerpen onder
het Zuiderterras in gebruik genomen. De glazen constructie, die ook wel eens de
visbokaal genoemd wordt, zorgde ervoor dat de passagiers een plek hadden waar
ze op een aangename manier konden uitrusten of informatie konden krijgen. Tijdens
de eerste jaren werd de investering zwaar bekritiseerd omdat het niet rendabel was
door het lage aantal cruiseaanlopen. Het aantal cruiseschepen dat Antwerpen
bezoekt is de laatste jaren terug omhoog gegaan, maar nu lijkt het lot van de
terminal toch beschoren.
De cruiseterminal past niet meer
in de plannen voor de heraanleg van de Scheldekaaien. Daarbij zal de
waterkeringsmuur met 90 centimeter verhoogd worden tot 2,25 meter. De terminal
werd zo gebouwd dat de fundering ervan op de zelfde hoogte staat als de
waterkeringsmuur. Maar door de verhoging van de muur loopt de terminal op
termijn de kans om onderwater te lopen bij storm of springtij.

EN: In 2003 the first cruise terminal
of Antwerp, located below the Zuiderterras, was opened to the public. The glass
building, also jokingly called the fish bowl, finally created a place for the
passengers to rest or get information in an enjoyable way. During the first
years the investment was heavily criticised because it wasn't profitable due to
the low number of cruise calls. Over the last years the number of calls has
risen again but the fate of the terminal seems to have been sealed.
The cruise terminal doesn't fit anymore into
the plans to renovate the Scheldt quays. During the renovation the flood
defence of Antwerp, which is a closable wall, needs to be heightened by 90
centimetres to 2,25 metres. The terminal was built in such a way that the
foundations are on the same height as the flood defence wall, but due to it
needing to be higher the terminal is at risk of flooding during a storm or
spring tide.
