MS Magellan sluit cruiseseizoen 2015 af / MS Magellan closes cruise season 2015

NL: Het 222 meter lange cruiseschip MS Magellan van de Engelse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages lag op 23 december opnieuw in Antwerpen. Met de aanloop van het schip wordt ook het Antwerpse cruiseseizoen voor 2015 afgesloten.

EN: The 222 metres long cruise ship MS Magellan from the English company Cruise & Maritime Voyages was docked in Antwerp again on December 23st. With this call the ship also closes the cruise season for 2015.

NL: Na drie keer in Antwerpen te hebben gelegen binnen de tijdspanne van één week lag het cruiseschip MS Magellan van de Engelse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages op woensdag 23 december voor de laatste keer in de stad op een ongeplande aanloop. Dit jaar heeft het schip de eer om tijdens een van haar kerstcruises het Antwerpse cruiseseizoen voor 2015 af te sluiten.

De Scheldestad mocht dit jaar 21 zeecruiseschepen ontvangen. Dat is een daling tegenover vorig jaar toen er nog 29 zeereuzen naar de stad kwamen. Maar dat wil zeker niet zeggen dat het slecht gaat met de cruiseschepen in Antwerpen. De cruisemarkt fluctueert zeer sterk waardoor zulke dalingen kunnen voorkomen. Zeker kleinere cruisehavens zoals Antwerpen maken daardoor kans op een sterke daling of juist een stijging van het aantal aanlopen. Voor volgend jaar staan er al zeker 23 bezoeken gepland en daar kunnen er nog bijkomen.

EN: After being docked in Antwerp three times within the time span of one week the cruise ship MS Magellan from the English company Cruise & Maritime Voyages was docked in the city for the last time on Monday December 23rd, during an unschelduled call. This year the ship has the honour to close the cruise season of 2015 in Antwerp during her Christmas cruise.

This year Antwerp was visited by 21 sea cruise ships. This is a decline as opposed to last year when still 29 sea giants came to the city. But this doesn't necessarily mean that it's not going well with the cruise ships in Antwerp. The cruise market is always fluctuating which brings declines with it. Certainly for a smaller cruise port like Antwerp there is a chance of a steep decline or  rise of the number of cruise calls. For next year there are already 23 calls registered and it's still possible that there will be added more.

Cruise call Pont-Aven in Antwerpen 2015 Cancelled

NL: Normaal gezien zou de cruiseferry Pont-Aven van de Franse rederij Brittany Ferries het cruiseseizoen van Antwerpen afsluiten op 25 en 26 december. Door een mogelijke staking binnen het bedrijf wordt de kerstcruise naar de Scheldestad echter afgelast.

EN: Normally the cruise ferry Pont-Aven from the French ferry company Brittany Ferries would close the cruise season in Antwerp on December 25th & 26th. But due to a possible strike within the company the Christmas cruise to the city has been cancelled.

NL: De cruiseferry Pont-Aven zou op 25 en 26 december voor het derde jaar op rij aanmeren aan de cruiseterminal in Antwerpen. Op 11 december werd echter door de rederij Brittany Ferries beslist om de Kerstcruise te annuleren door een nakende staking binnen het bedrijf. Ook de Nieuwjaarscruise naar Rouen in Frankrijk werd geannuleerd.

EN: The cruise ferry Pont-Aven would have visited Antwerp for the third year in a row on December 25th and 26th, but on December 11th Brittany Ferries decided to cancel the cruise due to a possible strike within the company. Apart from the Christmas cruise the New Years cruise to Rouen in France has also been cancelled.

Besparingen / Economy measures

NL: De kans dat de werknemers van Brittany Ferries tijdens de feestdagen het werk zullen neerleggen is redelijk groot. Er blijkt een dispuut te zijn over het langer te moeten werken voor hetzelfde loon. Omdat de werknemers dit hebben geweigerd wil Brittany Ferries hun snelle catamaranferry, HSC Normandie Express, omvlaggen van de Franse naar de Engelse vlag. Hierdoor zouden ze twintig procent kunnen besparen, maar daar zijn de werknemers niet akkoord mee.

Om de passagiers niet op het laatste moment te moeten informeren dat hun cruise niet doorgaat heeft Brittany Ferries besloten om hun twee feestcruises met de Pont-Aven te annuleren. Hierdoor verschuift voor Antwerpen ook de afsluiting van het cruiseseizoen.  

Het cruiseseizoen van Antwerpen zal nu afgesloten worden op 21 december door MS Magellan van Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

EN: The chances are quite high that the employees of Brittany Ferries will strike during the holidays. There seems to be a dispute about the crew having to work longer hours for the same wage. Because the employees refused this Brittany Ferries now wants to reflag their fast catamaran ferry, HSC Normandie Express, from the French to the English flag. That way the company would save twenty percent, but the employees don't want this to happen.

To make sure that Brittany Ferries should not contact their passengers about a possible cancellation at the very last moment, they decided to cancel both holiday cruises with Pont-Aven. Because of the cancellation the end of the cruise season in Antwerp also changes.

The cruise season of Antwerp will now be closed on December 21st by MS Magellan from Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

50 jaar Marco Polo - 50 years Marco Polo

NL: Het elegante cruiseschip MS Marco Polo meerde op 26 oktober opnieuw aan in het hart van Antwerpen, vlakbij het restaurant Zuiderterras. Dit jaar viert het schip zijn gouden jubileum. Het vaart namelijk al 50 jaar rond de wereld. Stap mee aan boord van deze veteraan in de cruisewereld.

EN: On the 26th of October the elegant cruise ship MS Marco Polo once again docked in the heart of Antwerp, right next to the restaurant Zuiderterras. This year the ship celebrates its golden jubilee. The ship has been sailing around the world for 50 year. Step on board this veteran of the cruise branch.

NL: Wie regelmatig langs de Scheldekaaien komt zal het schip vast al eens hebben zien liggen. Sinds de eerste aanloop in mei 2010 kwam de Marco Polo van de Engelse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) maarliefst 18 keer naar Antwerpen. Daarmee is het 176 meter lange schip ook de recordhouder van meeste aanlopen ooit in de stad.

EN: Those who often visit the Schelde quays will probably already have seen the ship docked there. Since the first call in May 2010 the 176 metres long Marco Polo, from the English cruise line Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV), has docked in Antwerp for not less than 18 times. No other cruise ship has ever visited Antwerp more times.

Gouden jubileum - Golden jubilee

NL: Dit jaar vaart Marco Polo voor exact 50 jaar rond de wereld en dat is een hele prestatie. De meeste cruiseschepen worden namelijk afgedankt als ze ongeveer veertig jaar oud zijn omdat de onderhoudskosten dan te hoog oplopen. Maar Cruise & Maritime Voyages laat zich hier momenteel nog niet door afschrikken en zorgt zeer goed voor de oude dame. Elk jaar ondergaat het schip een uitgebreide controle van de motoren, die overigens nog origineel zijn uit 1965, en wordt het schip bijgeschilderd waar nodig.

Voor het jubileumjaar werden er verschillende speciale cruises en evenementen georganiseerd.

EN: This year Marco Polo has been sailing around the world for exactly 50 years and that is a great achievement. Most cruise ships are abandoned around the age of forty because the maintenance costs will become too high, but Cruise & Maritime Voyages doesn't let this bother them at the moment and still takes very good care of the old lady. Every year the ship goes into dry dock for an extensive check-up of the engines, which are still original from 1965, and the ship gets repainted where needed.

For the jubilee several special cruises and events were organised by the cruise line.

Elegante vorm - Elegant form

NL: Veel mensen beschrijven de nieuwe cruiseschepen als drijvende flatgebouwen, maar dat is zeker niet het geval bij dit schip. Marco Polo werd gebouwd op het einde van het tijdperk van de ocean liners en dat is ook duidelijk zichtbaar. Typische kernmerken zijn dat de schepen een hoge boeg hebben en dat de reddingsboten hoog op het schip bevestigd zijn. Op die manier is het schip beter bestand tegen de hoge golven op de oceaan. Dat geeft de schepen ook een andere vorm dan hedendaagse cruiseschepen. De ronde vormen in het schip waren typisch voor de jaren zestig.

Ook binnenin ziet het schip er nog heel goed uit voor haar leeftijd. Regelmatig worden de lounges en bars heringericht om het aan boord voor de passagiers zo aangenaam mogelijk te maken.

EN: Many people describe the new cruise ships as floating apartment blocks, but this is certainly not the case with Marco Polo. Marco Polo was built at the end of the era of the ocean liners and this is very visible. Typical characteristics of those ships is a very high bow and that the lifeboats are placed high upon the ships. That way the ship is protected against the high waves on the ocean. This gives the ships a completely different appearance than the modern cruise ships. The round forms in the ships were also typical for the sixties.

Also on the inside the ship still looks very good. The lounges and bars get refurbished from time to time to make the experience as pleasant as possible for the passengers.

Van de Sovjet-Unie tot de UK - From the Soviet-Union to the UK

NL: In 1965 werd het schip gebouwd bij de Mathias-Thesen Werft in het toenmalige Oost-Duitsland als Alexandr Pushkin, genoemd naar de gelijknamige Russische dichter. Het schip is één van vijf identieke schepen die gebouwd werden voor de rederij Baltic Shipping Company, gevestigd in Rusland in de voormalige Sovjet-Unie. Daar deed het schip functie als cruiseschip en troepentransportschip. Alexandr Pushkin (Marco Polo) is het enige schip van het vijftal dat momenteel nog rondvaart. Alle andere werden gesloopt of zijn gezonken.

Het schip veranderde verschillende keren van eigenaar nadat de rederij failliet ging. Tot 1991 voer het schip rond als Alexandr Pushkin, daarna werd het omgedoopt tot Marco Polo. In 2010 kocht de Engelse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages het schip over van het Duitse TransOcean Tours. Vanaf dat jaar is het schip ook jaarlijks naar Antwerpen beginnen komen.

In de Card room aan boord van Marco Polo is de originele scheepsbel van Alexandr Pushkin nog terug te vinden.

EN: In 1965 the ship was built at the Mathias-Thesen Werft in former East-German as Alexandr Pushkin, named after the namesake Russian poet. The ship is one of five identical ships that were built for Baltic Shipping Company, which was stationed in Russia in the former Soviet-Union. There the ship was used as cruise ship and for transporting military troops. Alexandr Pushkin (Marco Polo) is the only ship of the five that is still sailing today. All the others have been scrapped or sank.

The ship has changed ownership many times after the company went bankrupt. Until 1991 the ship sailed as Alexandr Pushkin. Onwards 1991 it was renamed Marco Polo. In 2010 Marco Polo was bought by the English cruise line Cruise & Maritime Voyages from the previous owner, the German TransOcean Tours. From that year Marco Polo visited Antwerp every year.

In the Card room on board Marco Polo you can still find the original ship bell from Alexandr Pushkin.

Toekomst - Future

NL: Cruise & Maritime Voyages zal Marco Polo hoogstwaarschijnlijk nog een paar jaar in de vloot houden, maar daarna zullen ook zij afscheid nemen van dit iconische schip. Nadien is de kans zeer groot dat het schip zal worden verkocht aan een sloopfirma.

EN: Cruise & Maritime Voyages will most likely keep Marco Polo in their fleet for a few more years, after which they will say goodbye to the iconic ship. After that the chance that the ship will be sold to a scrap yard is very high.

Oriana & Europa in Antwerpen 17/10/2015

NL: De stad Antwerpen mocht op zaterdag 17 oktober 2015 opnieuw twee cruiseschepen tegelijk ontvangen. Op zich is dat niet zo uniek want een dubbele aanloop komt wel meer voor, maar deze keer lagen de schepen niet samen aan het Zuiderterras. MV Oriana meerde namelijk aan in het Leopolddok.

EN: On Saturday 17 October 2015 the city of Antwerp was once again visited by two cruise ships on the same day. It is not really unique  as a double cruise call occurs from time to time, but this time the ships did not both dock at the Zuiderterras in the city as MV Oriana dock in the Leopolddok.

NL: MS Europa van de Duitse rederij Hapag-Lloyd Cruises en MV Oriana van de Engelse rederij P&O Cruises lagen op 17 oktober samen in Antwerpen. Deze keer lagen de schepen echter niet samen aan de cruiseterminal zoals dat gebruikelijk is bij een dubbele aanloop. Enkel de Europa meerde 's morgens af aan het Zuiderterras. De Oriana week uit naar de dokken van de Antwerpse haven en meerde aan in het Leopolddok aan de kaaien 206-212. Bekijk onderaan het artikel de foto's van beide schepen.

EN: MS Europa from the German cruise line Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and MV Oriana from the English cruise line P&O Cruises were both docked in Antwerp on October 17th. But this time the ships both berth at the cruise terminal like it is the case during most double cruise calls. Only the Europa docked at the Schelde qyays in the morning. The Oriana was diverted to the docks in the port of Antwerp and docked in the Leopolddok at quays 206-212.

Te grote diepgang - Draft too high

NL: Normaal gezien meren beide cruiseschepen bij een dubbele cruiseaanloop af aan de Scheldekaaien, maar doordat de Oriana te diep in het water ligt geraakt het schip niet tot in de binnenstad. Bij laagtij zou het schip anders in de problemen komen en zich vast kunnen steken in het slib. Daardoor week het schip al voor het tweede jaar op rij uit naar het Leopolddok. De passagiers aan boord werden opgewacht door een colonne bussen die hen naar de binnenstad bracht. 

EN: During a double cruise call both ships normally dock at the Schelde quays, but because the Oriana lies to deep in the water the ship wasn't able to get to the city centre. Otherwise the ship could get into trouble during low tide as it possibly could get stuck in the mud of the river. Therefore the ship was diverted to the Leopolddok for the second year in a row. The passengers on board were awaited by a column of busses to take them to the city centre.

Reusachtige Union Jack - Giant Union Jack

NL: Vorig jaar lag de Oriana ook al aangemeerd in het Leopolddok maar toen was het schip nog in de oude kleuren van P&O Cruises, namelijk een volledig witte romp en een okergele schouw. Begin dit jaar werd het schip omgeschilderd in de nieuwe huisstijl van de rederij. Daarvoor werd onder mee de schouw blauw geschilderd. Maar de grootste verandering is dat de Oriana op de boeg een reusachtige Engelse vlag kreeg. Met die aanpassingen wil P&O Cruises hun Britse traditie, die ze al meer dan 175 jaar meedragen, nog extra benadrukken.

EN: Last year Oriana was also docked in the Leopolddok but then the ship was stil in the old colours of P&O Cruises, namely the completely white hull and the ochre-yellow funnel. Earlier this year the ship was repainted in the new house style of the cruise line. Therefore the funnel was painted blue, but the biggest difference is that Oriana received an enormous Union Jack on the bow. By doing so P&O Cruises wants to accentuate their British tradition that is already going on for over 175 years now.

MS Astor in Antwerpen Oktober/October 2015

MS Astor van de Duitse rederij TransOcean Kreuzfahrten lag begin oktober twee keer kort achter elkaar in Antwerpen aangemeerd. Op zondag 4 oktober kwam het schip onder stralende zonneschijn aan in de stad en vertrok terug om 23uur 's avonds.

Op woensdag meerde het schip echter al opnieuw aan in Antwerpen. Deze keer voer de Astor een microcruise van Bremerhaven naar Antwerpen. Omdat Antwerpen de eindhaven was van de cruise gingen alle passagiers van boord. Daarna werden allerlei voorbereidingen getroffen om het schip klaar te maken voor haar werfbezoek in Vlissingen in Nederland, waar het schip momenteel ligt.

De situatie van MS Astor is op dit moment heel speciaal. Het schip werd vorig jaar opgekocht door de Engelse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages. Tijdens het zomerseizoen vaart het schip echter nog steeds, als charter, voor de Duitse rederij TransOcean Kreuzfahrten. Tijdens het werfbezoek wordt de Astor klaargemaakt voor haar winterseizoen voor Cruise & Maritime Voyages waarvoor het helemaal naar Australië trekt.

MS Astor heeft een lengte van 176 meter en kan 650 passagiers aan boord nemen. Het schip werd in 1987 gebouwd in Kiel, Duitsland.

MS Astor from the German cruise line TransOcean Kreuzfahrten was docked in Antwerp two times short after each other at the beginning of October. On Sunday October 4th the ship arrived in the city with brilliant sunshine and departed at 11p.m.

On Wednesday the ship already visited Antwerp again. This time the Astor sailed a micro cruise from Bremerhaven to Antwerp. Because Antwerp was the endpoint all passengers had to disembark. Afterwards the ship was being prepared for her dry dock period in Flushing in the Netherlands, where it is docked right now.

The situation of MS Astor is very special at the moment. Last year the ship was bought by the English cruise line Cruise & Maritime Voyages, but during the summer season the ship still sails for the German cruise line TransOcean Kreuzfahrten as a charter. During the visit at the shipyard the Astor will be prepared for her winter season with Cruise & Maritime Voyages and will set sail for Australia.

MS Astor has a length of 176 metres and can accommodate 650 passengers. The ship was built in Kiel, Germany in 1987.

NL: Met de komst van het cruiseschip MS Magellan van Cruise & Maritime Voyages wordt het cruiseseizoen van Antwerpen, na meer dan twee maanden stilte, opnieuw op gang getrokken. Het 222 meter lange schip meerde op 5 september opnieuw aan in de binnenstad. Neem mee een kijkje aan boord van het schip.

EN: With the arrival of the cruise ship MS Magellan from Cruise & Maritime Voyages the cruise season of Antwerp, which has been interrupted for over two months, is once again picking up. On 5th September the 222 metres long ship docked once again in the city center. Take a look on board the ship.

NL: Het cruiseschip MS Magellan van de Engelse rederij Cruise & Maritime Voyages lag op zaterdag 5 september voor de tweede keer dit jaar in Antwerpen aangemeerd. Daarmee wordt ook het cruiseseizoen terug op gang getrokken na een stilte van meer dan twee maanden. Het nieuwe vlaggenschip van de rederij werd begin dit jaar in de vaart genomen nadat het overgekocht werd van de vorige eigenaar Ibero Cruceros. Met 222 meter is het het grootste schip van de rederij en ook het tweede grootste cruiseschip dat dit jaar naar Antwerpen komt.

MS Magellan brengt 1450 passagiers mee naar de Scheldestad en zal dat nog drie keer doen dit jaar. Wie het impressionante schip dus zelf eens van dichtbij wil gaan bekijken kan dit op 15, 18 of 21 december 2015.

EN: On Saturday 5th September the cruise ship MS Magellan from Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) was berthed in Antwerp for the second time this year. With this the cruise season also picked up again after a gap of over two months without any ships. The new flagship of the cruise line started sailing for CMV at the start of 2015, after it was bought from its former owner Ibero Cruceros. With 222 metres the ship is the largest in the fleet, and the second largest ship to visit Antwerp this year.

MS Magellan brings 1450 passengers to the city and will do that again for another three times this year. When you want to see the imposing ship up close you can do so on 15, 18 or 21 December 2015.

Ruim interieur / Spacious interior

NL: MS Magellan werd in 1985 gebouwd als MS Holiday voor de Amerikaanse rederij Carnival Cruise Lines. Die staan bekend voor hun zeer kleurrijk, overdadig interieur. Om het schip voor de Engelse markt aan te passen werd een groot deel van het interieur vervangen door een rustiger ogend decor.

Wat opvalt is het enorme gevoel van ruimte aan boord. De restaurants en bars zitten niet opeengepakt zoals op sommige andere cruiseschepen wel het geval is. Magellan heeft twee restaurants aan boord, verschillende bars, een groot welness center met verschillende behandelingen, een showlounge die verspreid is over twee dekken, twee zwembaden en nog veel meer.

EN: MS Magellan was built in 1985 al MS Holiday for the American company Carnival Cruise Lines. They are well known for their very colourful, extravagant interior. To adjust the ship to the British market a large part of the interior was replaced by a more relaxed decor.

Once you are on board it is striking how much space there is. The restaurants and bars are not at all packed together as is sometimes the case on other cruise ships. Magellan has two restaurants on board, several bars, a large wellness center with many different treatments, a two deck high show lounge, two swimming pools and much more.

Gevleugelde schouw / Winged funnel

NL: Wat opvalt aan het schip is de schouw. Die is namelijk zo gebouwd dat het lijkt alsof ze twee vleugels heeft. De kenmerkende schouw is het symbool van Carnival Cruise Lines en zou volgens hen een walvisstaart voorstellen. Omdat het aerodynamisch niet goed zou zijn om de vleugels eraf te halen koos Cruise & Maritime Voyages ervoor om de schouw in haar originele staat te behouden.

EN: Striking to the ship's appearance is the funnel. It has been built as if it has two wings. The distinctive funnel is the trademark of Carnival Cruise Lines. According to them it resembles a whale tail. For aerodynamic reasons Cruise & Maritime Voyages chose to not remove the wings and leave the funnel in its original state.

Nieuw schip? / New ship?

NL: Volgens een bemanningslid aan boord van Magellan zou Cruise & Maritime Voyages aan het kijken zijn of het mogelijk is om een zusterschip van Magellan toe te voegen aan hun vloot. Of het uiteindelijk tot een akkoord zal komen is op dit moment nog onduidelijk.

EN: According to one of the crew members in board Magellan Cruise & Maritime Voyages are looking for the possibility to maybe add a sister ship of Magellan to their fleet. If it will eventually happen is unsure at the moment.
