Colombian Tall Ship ARC Gloria in Antwerpen 2024

NL: Het Tall Ship ARC Gloria van de Colombiaanse Marine meerde eind mei 2024 voor de tweede keer aan in Antwerpen. Het schip bleef vier dag liggen aan het cruiseponton bij Het Steen. Iedereen die dat wou kon het schip gratis bezoeken.

EN: The Colombian Navy's Tall Ship ARC Gloria docked in Antwerp for the second time at the end of May 2024. The ship stayed docked at the cruise pontoon near Het Steen for four days. Anyone who wanted to could visit the ship for free.

NL: De 76 meter lange driemaster ARC Gloria van de Colombiaanse Marine meerde op 31 mei om 09:30u aan bij het cruiseponton aan Het Steen. Het opleidingsschip werd die ochtend opgewacht door een marine band en een delegatie van de Belgische Marine. Ook de ARC Gloria had muziek bij en speelde tijdens de aankomst haar eigen hymne ‘Himno del ARC Buque Gloria’. Vanop het cruiseponton en de kaairand juichten de Antwerpse Colombianen het schip toe met hun Colombiaanse vlaggen.

De officieren aan boord salueerde bij de aankomst en enkele cadetten klommen, gekleed in de kleuren van de Colombiaanse vlag, in het touwwerk. Ondanks het slechte weer was er toch een uitgelaten sfeer tijdens het aanmeren.

EN: The 76-metre three-master ARC Gloria of the Colombian Navy moored at the cruise pontoon near Het Steen at 09:30h on 31 May. The training ship was welcomed by a navy band and a delegation from the Belgian Navy. The ARC Gloria also carried music and played its own anthem 'Himno del ARC Buque Gloria' during the arrival. From the cruise pontoon and quayside, the Antwerp Colombians cheered the ship with their Colombian flags.

The officers on board saluted on arrival and some of the cadets, dressed in the colours of the Colombian flag, climbed the ropes. Despite the bad weather, there was still an elated atmosphere during the docking.

NL: Nadat de loopbruggen gelegd werden, ging eerst een de delegatie van de Belgische Marine aan boord om ARC Gloria officieel te verwelkomen in Antwerpen. Colombia is voor Antwerpen zeer belangrijk omdat het de belangrijkste Europese invoerhaven is van tropisch fruit zoals bananen, ananassen en avocado’s. Antwerpen is ook de grootste koffiehaven ter wereld. Alle magazijnen samengeteld ligt er in Antwerpen genoeg koffie opgeslagen voor 27 miljard kopjes.

EN: After the gangways were laid, a delegation of the Belgian Navy first boarded the ship to officially welcome ARC Gloria to Antwerp. Colombia is very important for Antwerp as it is the main European import port of tropical fruits such as bananas, pineapples and avocados. Antwerp is also the world's largest coffee port. All warehouses combined, there is enough coffee stored in Antwerp for 27 billion cups.

Bezoek aan boord / Visit on board

NL: Om 11:00u, slechts iets meer dan een uur na de aankomst, mochten de eerste bezoekers het schip al betreden. Aan boord stond de vriendelijke bemanning klaar om iedereen te ontvangen. Naast een rondleiding over de buitendekken was het ook mogelijk om het kleine museum aan boord te bezoeken met onder andere een buste van Admiraal José Padilla Lopez, een sleutelfiguur in de onafhankelijkheidsoorlog van Colombia. Daarnaast was het ook mogelijk om de brug te bezoeken. Op het overdekte achterdek stonden verschillende standjes opgesteld waar Colombiaanse snuisterijen en souvenirs van het schip verkocht werden. Het schip was elke dag dat het in Antwerpen lag te bezoeken.

EN: At 11:00h, only a little over an hour after arrival, the first visitors were already allowed to board the ship. On board, the friendly crew was ready to welcome everyone. Besides a tour of the outer decks, it was also possible to visit the small museum on board which includes a bust of Admiral José Padilla Lopez, a key figure in Colombia's war of independence. In addition, it was also possible to visit the bridge. Several stalls were set up on the covered aft deck selling Colombian trinkets and souvenirs from the ship. The ship could be visited every day it was in Antwerp.

NL: ARC Gloria is momenteel bezig aan een tour langs West- en Noord-Europa om de 200^ste verjaardag te vieren van de Colombiaanse Marine. Het schip kwam vanuit Barcelona rechtstreeks naar Antwerpen gevaren en zet van hieruit op 3 juni koers naar Stockholm waar het op 11 juni verwacht wordt. Nadien wordt Kiel in Duitsland bezocht tijdens hun maritiem festival ‘Kieler Woche’. Van daaruit gaat het richting Amsterdam en nadien ook nog Londen.

De Stad Antwerpen hoopt om ARC Gloria opnieuw te mogen verwelkomen tijdens volgende editie van de Tall Ships Races in Antwerpen in 2026. Momenteel heeft het schip hier nog niet voor bevestigd.

EN: ARC Gloria is currently on a tour of western and northern Europe to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Colombian Navy. The ship sailed from Barcelona directly to Antwerp, from where it sets sail on 3 June to Stockholm where it is expected on 11 June. Afterwards, it will visit Kiel in Germany during their maritime festival 'Kieler Woche'. From there, it will head for Amsterdam and then also London.

The City of Antwerp hopes to welcome ARC Gloria again during next edition of the Tall Ships Races in Antwerp in 2026. Currently, the ship has not yet confirmed for this.

MS Ocean Nova & Dar Młodzieży in Antwerpen - April 2023

NL: Het expeditiecruiseschip Ocean Nova kwam op 21 april 2023 voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen. Het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży keerde diezelfde dag ook terug van haar 15^de zeestage met de Antwerp Maritime Academy. Beide schepen meerden aan aan het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.

EN: The expedition cruise ship Ocean Nova came to Antwerp for the first time on 21 April 2023. The Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży also returned the same day from her 15th sea stint for the Antwerp Maritime Academy. Both ships moored at the cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.

NL: Het 73 meter lange expeditiecruiseschip Ocean Nova kwam op vrijdag 21 april voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen. Het is het kleinste cruiseschip dat dit jaar naar Antwerpen zal komen en het is het op één na kleinste cruiseschip dat ooit in de Scheldestad geweest is. De Ocean Nova werd gebouwd in 1991 en heeft plaats aan boord voor 78 passagiers. Dankzij haar versterkte romp kan het schip ook cruises varen in Antarctica. Tijdens haar bezoek aan Antwerpen voer de Ocean Nova een cruise langs het Kanaal en Denemarken. Vanuit Antwerpen voer het schip rechtstreeks naar Zeebrugge om daarna het Kanaal over te varen richting het Engelse Tilbury.

EN: The 73-metre expedition cruise ship Ocean Nova came to Antwerp for the first time on Friday 21 April. It is the smallest cruise ship to come to Antwerp this year and is the second smallest cruise ship ever the city. The Ocean Nova was built in 1991 and has room on board for 78 passengers. Thanks to its reinforced hull, the ship can also sail cruises in Antarctica. During her visit to Antwerp, the Ocean Nova was sailing a cruise along the English Channel and Denmark. From Antwerp, the ship sailed directly to Zeebrugge before crossing the Channel towards Tilbury in England.

NL: De cruiseaanloop van de Ocean Nova viel samen met de terugkomst van het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży. Na vier weken meerde het Poolse schoolschip rond 14:00u opnieuw aan in Antwerpen. Het schip wordt elk jaar ingezet voor de Antwerp Maritime Academy, vroeger gekend als de Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen, voor een zeestage met hun eerstejaarsstudenten. Het was de 15^de keer dat er zo’n zeestage georganiseerd werd op het schip. Een deel van de eerstejaarsstudenten was in de masten geklommen voor de aankomst aan de Scheldekaaien. Doordat de Ocean Nova niet veel plaats innam aan het cruiseponton werd er besloten om de Dar Młodzieży ook aan het ponton te laten aanmeren.

Dar Młodzieży vertrok op zondagavond opnieuw uit Antwerpen. De volgende bestemming is de haven van Hamburg in Duitsland, waar het schip op 5 mei zal aankomen. Van daaruit gaan ze via het Zweedse Stockholm terug richting Gdynia in Polen.

EN: The cruise call of the Ocean Nova coincided with the return of the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży. After four weeks, the Polish school ship docked in Antwerp again around 14:00h. The ship is used every year by the Antwerp Maritime Academy to organise a traineeship. It was the 15th time such a sea traineeship was organised on the ship. Several of the first-year students had climbed the masts while arriving back at the Scheldt quays in Antwerp. As the Ocean Nova did not take up much space on the cruise pontoon, it was decided that the Dar Młodzieży would also dock on the pontoon.

Dar Młodzieży left Antwerp again on Sunday evening. The next destination is the port of Hamburg in Germany, where the ship will arrive on 5 May. From there, they will head back to Gdynia in Poland via Stockholm, Sweden.

Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II in Antwerpen 2023

NL: Het Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II kwam op 2 april 2023 aan in Antwerpen voor een vijfdaags bezoek. Het schip vaart momenteel een “schoolcruise” met het Canadese project ‘Class Afloat’, waarbij studenten kunnen studeren aan boord van het schip terwijl ze de wereld rondvaren.

EN: The Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II arrived in Antwerp on 2 April 2023 for a five-day visit. The ship is currently sailing a "school cruise" with the Canadian project 'Class Afloat', where students can study aboard the ship while sailing around the world.

NL: Het groene Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II, dat trouwens ook groene zeilen heeft, kwam op zondag 2 april aan in Antwerpen. Het schip zal vijf dagen aan het cruiseponton blijven liggen, tot donderdag 6 april.

Alexander von Humboldt II is een vrij nieuw zeilschip. Het werd in 2011 gebouwd bij de scheepswerf Brenn- und Verformtechnik (BVT) in de Duitse stad Bremen. Het was het eerste grote zeilschip dat in Duitsland gebouwd werd sinds 1994. Het vervangt de originele Alexander von Humboldt die in 2011 uit de vaart werd genomen en momenteel in Bremen dienst doet als hotelschip.

Alexander von Humboldt II wordt uitgebaat door de rederij Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training en iedereen tussen 14 en 75 jaar oud komt in aanmerking om mee te varen met het schip. In totaal is er aan boord plaats voor 79 personen.

EN: The green Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II, which also has green sails, arrived in Antwerp on Sunday April 2nd. The ship will stay docked at the cruise pontoon for five days, until Thursday April 6th.

Alexander von Humboldt II is a fairly new sailing ship. It was built in 2011 at the Brenn- und Verformtechnik (BVT) shipyard in the German city of Bremen. It was the first large sailing ship built in Germany since 1994. It replaced the original Alexander von Humboldt, which was decommissioned in 2011 and currently serves as a hotel ship in Bremen.

Alexander von Humboldt II is operated by the shipping company Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training and anyone between the age of 14 and 75 is eligible to sail on the ship. In total, there is room on board for 79 people.

Class Afloat

NL: Vorig jaar lag Alexander von Humboldt II nog in Antwerpen tijdens The Tall Ships Races. Dit jaar bezoekt het schip de stad in een andere hoedanigheid. Momenteel vaart het de wereld rond voor het Canadese project ‘Class Afloat’. Het West Island College International organiseert elk jaar een schoolcruise op het Tall Ship met een erkende schoolopleiding, naar het Canadese model.

Het schooljaar is onderverdeeld in twee semesters: september tot januari en mei tot september. De studenten kunnen zelf kiezen of ze voor één of twee semesters deelnemen, of zelfs in sommige gevallen voor meer dan twee semesters. Het schooljaar is een combinatie van een reis op het vaste land, gecombineerd met een lange vaart op de Alexander von Humboldt II. Er worden namelijk niet enkel havens in Europa aangelopen maar ook havens in bijvoorbeeld de Caraïben, Zuid-Amerika en Afrika. Naargelang het studietraject dat gekozen wordt, wordt er tot 5 uur les per dag gevolgd. Het project bestaat al sinds 1984.

In de zomermaanden, wanneer de studenten niet aan boord zijn, neemt de Alexander von Humboldt II deel aan de grote zeilevenementen zoals The Tall Ships Races, en andere bijeenkomsten van unieke schepen.

EN: Last year, Alexander von Humboldt II was still in Antwerp during The Tall Ships Races. This year, the ship is visiting the city for a different reason. It is currently sailing around the world for the Canadian project 'Class Afloat'. The West Island College International organises a school cruise on the Tall Ship every year with an approved school curriculum, following the Canadian model.

The school year is divided into two semesters: September to January and May to September. Students can choose whether to participate for one or two semesters, or even in some cases for more than two semesters. The school year is a combination of mainland travel, combined with a long sailing on the Alexander von Humboldt II. Not only ports in Europe are visited, but also ports in, for example, the Caribbean, South America and Africa. Depending on the study route chosen, up to five hours of lessons per day are taken. The project has existed since 1984.

During the summer months, when the students are not on board, the Alexander von Humboldt II participates in major sailing events such as The Tall Ships Races, and other gatherings of unique ships.

Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży in Antwerpen in 2023

NL: Het Poolse Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży bracht op 24 en 25 maart 2023 opnieuw een bezoek in Antwerpen. Voor de 15^de keer vertrekken de eerstejaarsstudenten van de Antwerp Maritime Academy op een 4 weken lange zeestage met de driemaster.

EN: The Polish Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży paid another visit to Antwerp on 24 and 25 March 2023. For the 15th time, the first-year students of the Antwerp Maritime Academy set off on a 4-week nautical internship with the three-master.

NL: De Antwerp Maritime Academy, vroeger bekend als de Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen, organiseert in 2023 opnieuw een zeestage voor hun eerstejaarsstudenten. Het is al de 15^de keer dat er zo’n opleiding georganiseerd wordt. Dankzij een samenwerking met de Gdynia Maritime Academy in Polen wordt de majestueuze driemaster Dar Młodzieży elk jaar ter beschikking gesteld voor de vaart.

Dar Młodzieży meerde op vrijdagsnamiddag aan bij het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras. Daar schepen op zaterdag 120 studenten in, samen met hun coaches. De vier weken durende zeestage brengt hen naar Funchal op Madeira waarna ze terug koers zetten naar Antwerpen. Het schip zal terug aankomen in de Scheldestad op 21 april, rond 14:00u. 

EN: The Antwerp Maritime Academy, formerly known as the Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen, is once again organising a sea traineeship for their first-year students in 2023. It is already the 15th time such a course has been organised. Thanks to a cooperation with the Gdynia Maritime Academy in Poland, the majestic three-master Dar Młodzieży is made available for sailing every year.

Dar Młodzieży docked at the cruise pontoon in Antwerp on Friday afternoon. There, 120 students embarked on Saturday, along with their coaches. The four-week sea internship will take them to Funchal on the island of Madeira after which they will set sail back to Antwerp. The ship will arrive back in the city on April 21st, around 14:00h.

NL: Dar Młodzieży werd in 1982 gebouwd voor de Gdynia Maritime Academy bij de Poolse scheepswerf Gdansk Shipyard in de gelijknamige stad. Ze werd ontworpen om het toenmalige opleidingsschip Dar Pomorza te vervangen, dat toen al meer dan vijftig jaar lang ingezet werd om nieuwe rekruten op te leiden. Dar Młodzieży, wat vertaald wordt als ‘Gift van de Jeugd’, bleek na de oplevering zo populair te zijn dat er nog 5 zusterschepen gebouwd werden: Druzhba (1987), Khersones (1988), Mir (1987), Pallada (1983) en Nasheba (1992)

Omdat het schip specifiek gebouwd werd voor studenten werd er ook een klaslokaal voorzien aan boord. Naast de gewone navigatiebrug van waaruit het schip gestuurd wordt, is er ook nog een tweede brug die uitgerust is met dezelfde instrumenten en kaarttafels. Op die manier kunnen de studenten ook zelf navigeren.

Het schip doet, zoals de meeste Tall Ships die nog rondvaren, regelmatig mee aan de Tall Ships Races en de andere bijeenkomsten van zeilschepen en historische schepen wereldwijd. Dankzij de samenwerking met de Antwerp Maritime Academy is Dar Młodzieży zo goed als elk jaar te gast in Antwerpen. Ook tijdens de edities van The Tall Ships Races is ze steeds van de partij.

EN: Dar Młodzieży was built in 1982 for the Gdynia Maritime Academy at the Polish shipyard Gdansk Shipyard in the city of the same name. She was designed to replace the previous training ship Dar Pomorza, which had by then been used to train new recruits for more than 50 years. Dar Młodzieży, which translates as 'Gift of Youth', proved so popular after delivery that five more sister ships were built: Druzhba (1987), Khersones (1988), Mir (1987), Pallada (1983) and Nasheba (1992).

As the ship was built specifically for students, a classroom was also provided on board. Besides the regular navigation bridge from which the ship is steered, there is also a second bridge equipped with the same instruments and chart tables. This way, the students can also navigate themselves.
The ship, like most Tall Ships still around, regularly participates in the Tall Ships Races and the other meetings of sailing ships and historical ships worldwide. Thanks to its cooperation with the Antwerp Maritime Academy, Dar Młodzieży visits Antwerp just about every year. She is also always present during the editions of The Tall Ships Races.

Maiden Call Sea Cloud Spirit in Antwerpen

NL: Het zeilcruiseschip Sea Cloud Spirit lag op 14 juni 2022 voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen voor een kort bezoek. De luxueuze driemaster werd warm onthaald door een delegatie van de Stad Antwerpen. Volgend jaar in augustus zal het schip nog eens terugkomen naar de stad.

EN: The sailing cruise ship Sea Cloud Spirit docked in Antwerp for the first time on 14 June 2022 for a short visit. The luxurious three-master was warmly welcomed by a delegation from the City of Antwerp. Next year in August, the ship will return to the city.

NL: Sea Cloud Spirit is zonder twijfel een buitenbeentje op de cruiselijst voor 2022. Het is namelijk een traditioneel zeilschip dat werd uitgerust als cruiseschip. Zo heeft het schip ook een Spa en een fitness aan boord. Bij een traditioneel schip denkt men bijna direct aan een historisch schip, maar de Sea Cloud Spirit werd pas eind september vorig jaar gedoopt en is daarmee het nieuwstee schip van de Duitse rederij Sea Cloud Cruises.

EN: Sea Cloud Spirit is without a doubt an oddity on the cruise list for 2022. It is a traditional sailing ship that has been equipped as a cruise ship. For example, the ship has a spa and a fitness on board. When you think of a traditional ship, you almost immediately think of a historic ship, but the Sea Cloud Spirit was only christened at the end of September last year and is therefore the newest ship of the German shipping company Sea Cloud Cruises.

NL: Sea Cloud Cruises lag voor het laatst in Antwerpen in 2010 met de Sea Cloud II. In 2020 en 2021 stonden er enkele aanlopen gepland maar die werden door de pandemie geannuleerd. Nu is het eindelijk gelukt om de Sea Cloud Spirit te mogen ontvangen, al vaart het schip momenteel wel maar op halve capaciteit omdat er nog steeds strenge maatregelen zijn aan boord. Normaal gezien is er plaats voor 136 passagiers waarvoor 85 bemanningsleden klaarstaan. Tijdens haar aanloop in Antwerpen was er dus meer bemanning aan boord dan passagiers.

EN: Sea Cloud Cruises last called at Antwerp in 2010 with the Sea Cloud II. In 2020 and 2021, a few calls were planned but were cancelled due to the pandemic. Now Antwerp has finally succeeded in receiving the Sea Cloud Spirit, although the ship is currently sailing at half capacity because there are still strict measures on board. Normally, there is room for 136 passengers for which 85 crew members are at the ready. During her call at Antwerp, there were more crew members on board than passengers.

NL: Het schip trok veel kijklustigen naar het Noorderterras. De impressionante driemaster met een hoogte van 57,7 meter was al van veraf te zien. Van dichtbij kon je het ingewikkelde touwwerk bekijken en de gouden adelaar die aan de boegspriet prijkt.

Naast de prachtige witte zeilen, die niet minder dan 4100m² groot zijn, heeft het schip ook nog een gewone motor die gebruikt wordt op plaatsen waar het te gevaarlijk is om de zeilen te hijsen, zoals tijdens de aankomst of het vertrek in een haven. De schouw van het schip zit trouwens verborgen in de achterste mast, die je hierdoor soms kan zien roken. De zeilen worden aan boord op de traditionele manier met de hand gehesen. Er werd niets geautomatiseerd. Dat betekent ook dat de bemanningsleden voor het hijsen van de grote zeilen in de masten moeten klimmen om ze handmatig los te maken.

EN: The ship attracted many spectators to the quayside. The impressive three-master with a height of 57,7 metres could be seen from afar. Up close, you could see the intricate rope work and the golden eagle adorning the bowsprit.

Apart from the beautiful white sails, which are no less than 4100 square metres, the ship also has an ordinary engine that is used in places where it is too dangerous to hoist the sails, such as when arriving or departing from a port. The ship's chimney is hidden in the rear mast, which can sometimes be seen smoking. The sails are hoisted on board in the traditional way by hand. Nothing was automated. This also means that the crew members must climb the masts to hoist the big sails and unhook them by hand.

NL: Het korte bezoek aan de stad is de kapitein zeer goed bevallen en hij heeft laten weten dat de Sea Cloud Spirit volgend jaar op 16 en 17 augustus 2023 terug naar Antwerpen zal komen. Dan zal het schip ook blijven overnachten.

EN: The short visit to the city was very well received by the captain and he has announced that the Sea Cloud Spirit will return to Antwerp next year on 16 and 17 August 2023. Then the ship will stay overnight.

Tall Ship Kruzenshtern komt opnieuw naar Antwerpen / comes back to Antwerp

NL: Het Russische Tall Ship Kruzenshtern wordt volgende week terug verwacht in Antwerpen. Op dinsdag 23 en woensdag 24 mei 2017 zal het schip afgemeerd liggen aan de cruiseterminal en het zal ook open zijn voor het grote publiek.

Het Russische zeilopleidingsschip Kruzenshtern zal op 23 en 24 mei aangemeerd liggen in Antwerpen aan de cruiseterminal (Zuiderterras). Vorig jaar lag het schip ook al in Antwerpen tijdens de Tall Ships Races. Het indrukwekkende zeilschip bezoekt de Scheldestad op weg naar Oostende, waar ze te gast zal zijn voor Oostende voor Anker van 25 tot 28 mei 2017.

De viermaster Kruzenshtern werd gebouwd in 1926 en heeft een lengte van 114 meter. Dat maakt haar tot één van de grootste zeilschepen ter wereld.

EN: Next week the Russian Tall Ship Kruzenshtern will return to Antwerp. On Tuesday 23^rd, and Wednesday 24^th May 2017 the ship will be docked at the cruise terminal and it will be opened for the public.

The Russian sail training ship Kruzenshtern will be docked at the cruise terminal (Zuiderterras) on 23 and 24 May.Last year the ship also visited Antwerp during the Tall ShipsRaces. The impressive sailing vessel visits the city on its way to Ostend, where it is expected for the maritime event ‘Oostende Voor Anker’ from 25 until 28 of May 2017.

The fourmaster Kruzenshtern was built in 1926 and has a length of 114 metres. This makes her one of the largest sailing vessels/tall ships in the world.

Kruzenshtern in Antwerp – practical:

Tall Ship Amerigo Vespucci in Antwerpen 2016

NL: De trots van de Italiaanse Marine, het zeilschip Amerigo Vespucci, lag begin september opnieuw enkele dagen in Antwerpen. Van 5 tot en met 8 september 2016 lag het schip afgemeerd aan de cruiseterminal aan het Zuiderterras. Doordat het schip goed aangekondigd was in de media kwamen duizenden mensen een kijkje nemen naar de imposante driemaster.

EN: The pride of the Italian Navy, the Tall Ship Amerigo Vespucci, once again visited Antwerp for a few days at the start of September. The ship was docked at the cruise terminal at the Zuiderterras from 5 until 8 September 2016. Because the ship was announced in all the media thousands of people came to take a look at the imposing three-master.

NL: Amerigo Vespucci werd in 1931 gebouwd in de Marine-Werft Castellammare di Stabia bij Napels als één van twee opleidingsschepen voor de Italiaanse Marine. Haar zusterschip 'Cristoforo Colombo' werd in 1928 gebouwd maar moest na de Tweede Wereldoorlog als compensatie aan Rusland gegeven worden. Daar werd het schip in 1963 verwoest door een brand.

Amerigo Vespucci werd genoemd naar de gelijknamige ontdekkingsreiziger. Aan de boeg hangt daarom ook een levensgroot gouden beeld van hem. Het schip heeft een lengte van 101 meter en is 15,5 meter breed. De masten reiken tot maarliefst 54 meter hoog en de 26 zeilen van het zeilschip hebben een totale oppervlakte van ca. 2600m². De maximale snelheid van het schip onder zeil is 10 knopen maar met haar motor kan de Amerigo Vespucci tot 12 knopen, of 22 km/u behalen. Het schip heeft plaats voor ca. 450 manschappen.

Het schip vertrok op donderdagochtend onder veel belangstelling uit Antwerpen. Na te hebben gedraaid voor het Zuiderterras koos het schip het ruime sop richting Brest in Frankrijk.

EN: Amerigo Vespucci was built in 1931 at the Marine-Werft Castellammare di Stabia near Napoli as one of two training ships for the Italian Navy. Her sister ship 'Cristoforo Colombo' was built in 1928 but was given to Russia as compensation after the Second World War. There the ship was destroyed by a fire in 1963.

Amerigo Vespucci was named after the namesake explorer. Because of that the bow sports a live-size golden statue of him. The ship has a length of 101 metres and is 15,5 metres wide. The masts reach 54 metres high and the 26 sails have a surface area of ca. 2600m². The maximal speed of the vessel under sail is 10 knots, but with her motor Amerigo Vespucci can reach 12 knots, or 22 km/h. The ship can accommodate ca. 450 crew members.

On Thursday morning Amerigo Vespucci left Antwerp amid great public interest. After having turned on the river the ship headed to sea, towards Brest in France.

Van 22 tot 26 augustus ligt het Tall Ship 'Amerigo Vespucci' aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het is sinds 2006 geleden dat het schip nog eens in onze stad lag. Het schip is open voor het publiek op zaterdag 24, en zondag 25 augustus, telkens tussen 15 & 18 uur. Onderaan het artikel kan u enkele interieurfoto's van het schip vinden.

De 'Amerigo Vespucci' werd gebouwd in 1931 in de Marine-Werft Castellammare di Stabia bij Napels. Oorspronkelijk werd het schip gebruikt als schoolschip voor de Italiaanse Marine. Deze functie heeft het schip vandaag de dag nog altijd.

Het schip heeft een lengte van 101 meter en is 15,5 meter breed. De masten reiken tot maarliefst 54 meter hoog. De 26 zeilen van de 'Amerigo Vespucci' hebben een totale oppervlakte van ca. 2600m². De maximale snelheid van het schip onder zeil is 10 knopen. Met haar motor kan de 'Amerigo Vespucci' tot 12 knopen behalen. Het schip heeft plaats voor ca. 450 manschappen.

Aan de boeg van het schip is trouwens een levensgroot beeld te vinden van de naamgever van het schip, namelijk de ontdekkingsreiziger Amerigo Vespucci.

From the 22nd until the 26th of August the Tall Ship 'Amerigo Vespucci' is docked in Antwerp. The last time the ship visited our city was in 2006. The ship is open for the public on Saturday the 24th, and Sunday the 25th of August, daily opened from  3 to 6 p.m. We were onboard this weekend to take a look at this beautiful ship. The maximum speed of the ship under sail is 10 knots. With her motor she can sail up to 12 knots. The ship can accommodate ca. 450 crew members.

At the bow a life-size statue of the godfather of the ship, the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, can be found.
