Terugblik Cruiseseizoen 2024 / Retrospect Cruise Season 2024 – Antwerpen

NL: Met het vertrek van MS Artania op 20 december werd het zeecruiseseizoen van 2024 in Antwerpen afgesloten. In totaal vonden 23 aanlopen plaats van 15 verschillende schepen en 5 schepen bezochten dit jaar voor het eerst de Scheldestad.

EN: The departure of MS Artania on 20 December closed the 2024 sea cruise season in Antwerp. A total of 23 calls by 15 different ships took place and five ships visited the city for the first time this year.

NL: Het aantal zeecruises dat Antwerpen in 2024 bezocht blijft stabiel. Met 23 aanlopen evenaren we het seizoen van 2023. Bij 8 aanlopen werd er door de rederijen gekozen om een overnachting aan te vragen. Op die manier kunnen de passagiers ook het nachtleven van Antwerpen leren kennen.

Vijf schepen mochten voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen verwelkomt worden. Drie ervan, Seven Seas Mariner, Seven Seas Voyager en Seven Seas Splendor behoren allemaal tot de vloot van de Amerikaanse luxerederij Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Daarmee lijkt Antwerpen voor de rederij op de kaart gezet, want tot 2024 stuurden ze enkel de Seven Seas Navigator naar hier. Voor Seven Seas Voyager werd er in 2024 zelfs een turnaround georganiseerd in Antwerpen waarbij 700 nieuwe passagiers inscheepten. In 2025 staan opnieuw 3 van hun schepen gepland om langs te komen.

De overige twee ‘Maiden Calls’ waren Azamara Onward en Sirena. Beide zijn ze zusterschepen van elkaar en werden ze rond de eeuwwisseling gebouwd voor Renaissance Cruises. Momenteel varen ze voor Azamara Cruises en Oceania Cruises. Beide schepen lagen voordien ook al in Antwerpen onder andere namen.

EN: The number of sea cruises visiting Antwerp in 2024 remains stable. With 23 calls, we matched the 2023 season. For 8 calls, cruise lines chose to request an overnight stay. This way, passengers can also get to know Antwerp's nightlife.

Five ships were visiting Antwerp for the first time. Three of them, Seven Seas Mariner, Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Splendor all belong to the fleet of US luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises. This seems to put Antwerp on the map for the company, as they only sent the Seven Seas Navigator here until 2024. For Seven Seas Voyager, they even organised a turnaround in Antwerp in 2024 with 700 new passengers embarking. Another three of their ships are scheduled to visit in 2025.

The other two Maiden Calls were Azamara Onward and Sirena. Both are sister ships to each other and were built at the turn of the century for Renaissance Cruises. They currently sail for Azamara Cruises and Oceania Cruises. Both ships were also previously in Antwerp under other names.

NL: Het grootste cruiseschip voor 2024 was het luxecruiseschip MS Marina van Oceania Cruises met 238 meter en 66.084 Bruttotonnage. Het kleinste schip was MS Clio van Grand Circle Cruise Line. Met 100 meter en slechts 3504 Bruttotonnage is ze met voorsprong het kleinste schip voor 2024, maar ze is ook één van de kleinste cruiseschepen die Antwerpen ooit bezocht heeft.

Er werden in 2024 ook enkele aanlopen geschrapt. Een aantal gingen niet door wegens slecht weer of omdat het schip verkocht werd, zoals AIDAaura. Een opvallende annulatie was de Villa Vie Odyssey. Het schip, dat vroeger als MS Braemar van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines een vaste waarde was in Antwerpen, werd in Belfast omgebouwd voor de nieuwe rederij Villa Vie Residences om er een 3,5 jaar durende wereldcruise mee te organiseren. Verschillende problemen zorgden ervoor dat het vertrek van het schip maanden vertraging opliep. Tijdens die verschillende vertraging werd het schip ook drie keer aangemeld voor een aanloop in Antwerpen. Uiteindelijk werd de aanloop definitief geschrapt en heeft het schip door de vertraging het volledige Noord-Europese seizoen overgeslagen. Momenteel is het schip zonder problemen onderweg en heeft het recent het Panamakanaal doorkruist.

EN: The largest cruise ship for 2024 was the luxury cruise ship MS Marina of Oceania Cruises with 238 metres and 66,084 Gross tonnage. The smallest ship was MS Clio of Grand Circle Cruise Line. At 100 metres and only 3504 Bruttotonnage, she is by far the smallest ship for 2024, but she is also one of the smallest cruise ships to ever visit Antwerp.

Some calls were also cancelled in 2024. Some did not go ahead due to bad weather or because the ship was sold, such as AIDAaura. One notable cancellation was the Villa Vie Odyssey. The ship, which previously operated as MS Braemar of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, and which previously was a fixture in Antwerp, was refitted in Belfast for the new cruise line Villa Vie Residences to run a 3.5-year world cruise. Several problems caused the ship's departure to be delayed for months. During those various delays, the ship was also registered three times for a call in Antwerp. In the end, the call was finally cancelled and the delay caused the ship to skip the entire northern European season. Currently, the ship is underway without any problems and recently crossed the Panama Canal.

Vooruitzichten voor 2025 / Outlook for 2025

NL: Momenteel zijn er 20 zeecruiseaanlopen aangemeld voor 2025 met 3 schepen die voor het eerst naar Antwerpen komen. Het eerste cruiseschip voor 2025, MS Balmoral, wordt verwacht op 29 en 30 april. Het grootste schip is MS Vista van Oceania Cruises. Het 242 meter lange luxecruiseschip kwam pas in 2023 in de vaart.

MS Artania sluit Cruiseseizoen 2024 af / MS Artania closes Cruise Season 2024

NL: MS Artania kwam op 19 december 2024 voor de tweede keer dit jaar naar Antwerpen. Door de hevige wind besloot de rederij om een dag langer in Antwerpen te blijven liggen. Het was ook de laatste aanloop van een zeecruiseschip voor 2024.

EN: MS Artania visited Antwerp on 19 December 2024 for the second time this year. Due to strong winds, the cruise line decided to stay an extra day in Antwerp. It was also the last call of a sea cruise ship of 2024.

NL: Het 231 meter lange cruiseschip MS Artania van de Duitse rederij Phoenix Reisen meerde op 19 december rond 08:00u aan in Antwerpen. Door de hevige wind werd besloten om het geplande vertrek om 17:00u met een volledige dag op te schuiven. De aanloop in Amsterdam verviel daardoor en het werd daarmee een cruise Hamburg-Antwerpen-Hamburg. Hierdoor werd het cruiseseizoen in Antwerpen met één extra dag verlengt.

Op 9 december lag het schip ook al in Antwerpen. MS Artania was toen bezig aan haar eerste cruise na haar gepland werfbezoek bij de Lloyd-Werft in Bremerhaven. Het schip kreeg een opknapbeurt voor maar liefst 20 miljoen euro. Naast de gebruikelijk zaken, zoals het vervangen van het tapijt, werden er ook verschillende cabines met een balkon uitgerust en werden enkele restaurants opnieuw ingericht. Er werden ook vier tenderboten vervangen door types met milieuvriendelijkere motoren.

EN: The 231-metre long cruise ship MS Artania of German cruise line Phoenix Reisen docked in Antwerp on 19 December around 08:00h. Due to strong winds, it was decided to postpone the scheduled departure at 17:00h by a full day. The Amsterdam call was therefore dropped and it became a cruise Hamburg-Antwerp-Hamburg. This extended the cruise season in Antwerp by one extra day.

On 9 December, the ship was also visited Antwerp. MS Artania was then sailing her first cruise after her planned shipyard visit at the Lloyd-Werft in Bremerhaven. The ship received a refurbishment of no less than €20 million. Besides the usual things, such as carpet replacement, several cabins were fitted with balconies and some restaurants were redecorated. Four tender boats were also replaced with types with more environmentally friendly engines.

Wereldcruise / World Cruise

NL: Wanneer MS Artania op 22 december terug aankomt in Hamburg maakt het schip zich meteen klaar om diezelfde dag nog te vertrekken op haar, tot nu toe, langste wereldcruise bij Phoenix Reisen van 162 dagen. Het schip zal vanuit Hamburg richting Noord-Afrika varen waarna het oversteekt naar Zuid-Amerika en via Ushuaia doorvaart naar Polynesië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Australië. Daarna gaat de reis verder via Indonesië en Maleisië naar het eiland Réunion, bij Madagaskar. De volgende haven is Kaapstad waarna MS Artania de westkust van Afrika afvaart om uiteindelijk de wereldcruise op 2 juni 2025 te eindigen in Gran Canaria.

EN: When MS Artania arrives back in Hamburg on 22 December, the ship will immediately prepare to depart the same day on her, so far, longest world cruise with Phoenix Reisen of 162 days. The ship will sail from Hamburg towards North Africa before crossing to South America and continuing via Ushuaia to Polynesia, New Zealand and Australia. It will then continue via Indonesia and Malaysia to Réunion Island, near Madagascar. The next port is Cape Town after which MS Artania will sail down the west coast of Africa before finally ending the world cruise in Gran Canaria on 2 June 2025.

MS Balmoral na Droogdok / after Dry Dock in Antwerpen 2024

NL: Het cruiseschip MS Balmoral van de Engelse rederij Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines lag op 17 & 18 december 2024 opnieuw in Antwerpen. Het schip kwam net uit het droogdok en het was ook sinds 2019 geleden dat het schip nog in Antwerpen lag.

EN: The cruise ship MS Balmoral of the English cruise line Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines was again in Antwerp on 17 & 18 December 2024. The ship had just come out of dry dock and it was the first visit in Antwerp since 2019.

NL: MS Balmoral is sinds 2009 een vaste waarde in Antwerpen. Sinds de overname van het schip door Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2008 lag het schip bijna elk jaar meerdere keren in Antwerpen. Maar in 2020 stak het coronavirus daar een stokje voor. Tussen 2020 en 2022 stond het schip maar liefst 9 keer op de planning, maar al die aanlopen moesten om Covid-gerelateerde redenen afgezegd worden. Sindsdien is het schip niet meer tot in Antwerpen geraakt, tot nu.

Op 17 december kwam MS Balmoral rond 17:00u aan in Antwerpen tijdens één van haar kerstcruises voor een overnachting. Het was de eerste cruise van het schip na het werfbezoek bij A&P Falmouth in de gelijknamige Engelse havenstad. Tijdens een periode van bijna twee weken namen 700 personen deel aan de opknapbeurt van het schip. Onder andere al het tapijt werd vervangen, één van de restaurants werd opgefrist en er werd in de Neptune Lounge – de plaats voor het entertainment aan boord – een grote LED-wand geïnstalleerd.  

Het schip vertrok op 14 december van Falmouth richting Southampton. Daar kwam het schip aan in de ochtend van 16 december waarna het de eerste nieuwe passagiers aan boord nam. Vanuit Engeland zette MS Balmoral koers naar Antwerpen, waar het schip bleef overnachten. Van hieruit ging het verder richting Rouen in Frankrijk, waarna de Kerstcruise zal eindigen in Southampton.

Het was de 21 keer dat MS Balmoral te gast was in Antwerpen. Ook voor 2025 staat het schip terug op de planning. Dit keer met 2 aanlopen.

EN: MS Balmoral has been a fixture in Antwerp since 2009. Since the ship was taken over by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in 2008, it has been in Antwerp several times almost every year. But in 2020, coronavirus put a stop to that. Between 2020 and 2022, the ship was scheduled no less than nine times, but all those calls had to be cancelled for Covid-related reasons. Since then, the ship has not made it to Antwerp, until now.

On 17 December, MS Balmoral arrived in Antwerp around 17:00h on one of her Christmas cruises for an overnight stay. It was the ship's first cruise after its shipyard visit at A&P Falmouth in the English port town of the same name. During a period of almost two weeks, 700 people took part in the refurbishment of the ship. Among other things, all the carpet was replaced, one of the restaurants was refreshed and a large LED wall was installed in the Neptune Lounge - the place for entertainment on board.

The ship left Falmouth for Southampton on 14 December. There, the ship arrived on the morning of 16 December after which the first new passengers embarked. From England, MS Balmoral set course for Antwerp, where the ship stayed overnight. From there, it continued towards Rouen in France, after which the Christmas cruise will end in Southampton.

It was MS Balmoral's 21st visit in the city of Antwerp. The ship is also scheduled back for 2025. This time with 2 calls.

MS Ambition & Wind Turbine Parts – Antwerpen 2024

NL: MS Ambition kwam op 14 december 2024 tijdens een Kerstcruise naar Antwerpen. Tijdens de aankomst werd het schip voorbijgevaren door onderdelen voor het windmolenpark Doggerbank in de Noordzee.

EN: MS Ambition came to Antwerp on a Christmas cruise on 14 December 2024. During its arrival, the ship was passed by components for the Doggerbank wind farm in the North Sea.

NL: MS Ambition van de Engelse rederij Ambassador Cruise Line kwam op 14 december voor de vierde en laatste keer in 2024 naar Antwerpen. Het schip bezocht de stad tijdens een 7-daagse kerstcruise met als begin- en eindbestemming Tilbury in Engeland. Onderweg bezocht het schip Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Rouen en Honfleur.

MS Ambition werd in 1999 gebouwd als MS Mistral voor Festival Cruises. Na hun faillissement veranderde het schip enkele keren van eigenaar, waarna het in 2023 werd overgenomen door Ambassador Cruise Line. Het schip heeft een lengte van 216 meter en heeft plaats voor 1700 passagiers.

EN: MS Ambition of English company Ambassador Cruise Line came to Antwerp for the fourth and last time in 2024 on 14 December. The ship visited the city on a 7-day Christmas cruise starting and ending at Tilbury in England. Along the way, the ship visited Amsterdam, Antwerp, Rouen and Honfleur.

MS Ambition was built in 1999 as MS Mistral for Festival Cruises. After their bankruptcy, the ship changed hands several times before being taken over by Ambassador Cruise Line in 2023. The ship has a length of 216 metres and can accommodate 1,700 passengers.

Doggerbank Windmolens / Wind Turbines

NL: Regelmatig kan je langs de Scheldekaaien een ponton voorbij zijn varen met daarop grote gele constructies. Dit zijn onderdelen van nieuwe windmolens. Ze worden gebouwd op de site van de voormalige Cockerill Scheepswerf in Hoboken. Smulders Projects bouwt er sinds 2001 aan onderdelen voor windmolenparken en waren daarmee ook pioniers in hun marktonderdeel.

De gele constructies zijn stukken die op de funderingen van de windmolens geplaatst worden op zee, waarbij de bovenkant boven water blijft. Hier bovenop wordt dan de rest windmolen geplaatst.

Op 14 december kwamen, vlak na het zwaaimanoeuvre van MS Ambition, opnieuw enkele windmolenonderdelen voorbij gevaren aan het Steenplein. De sleepboot Multratug 22 trok het beladen ponton voort. De lading is bestemd voor de Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. Van daaruit worden ze per schip vervoert naar de Doggerbank voor de kust van Engeland.

Sinds 2022 wordt 125km voor de Oostkust van Engeland gewerkt aan het grootste offshore windmolenpark ter wereld. De Doggerbank Wind Farm bestaat uit drie delen: Dogger Bank A, B en C. Verdeeld over de drie delen zullen respectievelijk 95, 95 en 87 windmolens staan van maar liefst 260 meter hoog en met wieken van 107 meter lang. Als alle windmolens er staan in 2027 zullen ze elektriciteit leveren voor 6 miljoen gezinnen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

EN: You can regularly see a pontoon sailing past along the Scheldt quays with large yellow constructions on it. These are parts of new wind turbines. They are built on the site of the former Cockerill Shipyard in Hoboken. Smulders Projects has been building parts for wind farms there since 2001, making them pioneers in their market section.

The yellow structures are pieces that are placed on the foundations of the wind turbines at sea, with the top remaining above water. On top of this, the rest wind turbine is installed.

On 14 December, just after MS Ambition's swinging manoeuvre, some wind turbine parts again sailed by at the Steenplein. The tug Multratug 22 was pulling the loaded pontoon. The cargo is heading for the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. From there, they will be transported by ship to the Doggerbank off the coast of England.

Since 2022, 125km off the east coast of England, the world's largest offshore wind farm has been under construction. The Doggerbank Wind Farm consists of three parts: Dogger Bank A, B and C. Divided into the three parts, there will be 95, 95 and 87 wind turbines installed, respectively. They are all 260 metres high and have blades of 107 metres long. When all the wind turbines are installed in 2027, they will provide electricity for 6 million families in the UK.

Maiden Call MS Sirena in Antwerpen 2024

NL: Het luxecruiseschip MS Sirena lag op 16 oktober 2024 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het is de laatste van 5 Maiden Calls in de stad dit jaar.

EN: The luxury cruise ship MS Sirena docked in Antwerp for the first time on 16 October 2024. It is the last of 5 Maiden Calls in the city this year.

NL: Het 181-meter lange schip van de Amerikaanse rederij Oceania Cruises meerde op woensdag 16 oktober rond 07:00u ’s morgens aan bij Het Steen. Na de overvaart van Dover werd er na aankomst beslist om het schip een uur vroeger, om 17:00u, te laten afvaren richting Amsterdam.

Het was de eerste keer dat MS Sirena een bezoek bracht aan Antwerpen, maar toch was het niet de eerste keer dat het schip in de stad te zien was. In 2011 en 2014 was het schip bij ons te zien als MS Ocean Princess van Princess Cruises. In 2016 besloot die rederij om het schip te verkopen aan Oceania Cruises.

EN: The 181-metre ship of US shipping company Oceania Cruises docked at Het Steen on Wednesday 16 October at around 07:00h in the morning. After crossing from Dover, it was decided upon arrival that the ship would set sail for Amsterdam an hour earlier, at 17:00h. It was MS Sirena's first visit to Antwerp, yet it was not the first time the ship had been seen in the city. In 2011 and 2014, the ship was docked in Antwerp as MS Ocean Princess from Princess Cruises. In 2016, the cruise line decided to sell the ship to Oceania Cruises.

Renaissance-Zusters / Renaissance Sisters

NL: MS Sirena werd oorspronkelijk in 1999 gebouwd als ‘R Four’ voor Renaissance Cruises. Het was één van maar liefst 8 bijna identieke schepen die tussen 1998 en 2001 gebouwd werden voor de rederij bij de Franse scheepswerf Chantiers de l’Atlantique in St. Nazaire. De schepen kregen de tijdelijke namen ‘ R One’ tot ‘R Eight’. Het was gepland om de namen later nog aan te passen maar de aanslagen van 9/11 in New York hebben daarbij roet in het eten gegooid. Doordat veel mensen niet meer wilden reizen kreeg onder andere Renaissance Cruises hun schepen niet meer gevuld, waardoor ze eind september 2001 al het faillissement aanvroegen.

Hun 8 schepen werden verkocht en werden door verschillende rederijen overgenomen. Door de jaren heen zijn al hun schepen verschillende keren van eigenaar en naam veranderd.

MS R Four werd na het faillissement overgenomen door Princess Cruises als Tahitian Princess. Tot 2009 voer het schip rond met die naam, waarna het door Princess Cruises omgedoopt werd tot Ocean Princess. Sinds 2016 vaart het schip onder zijn huidige naam rond voor Oceania Cruises.

Voor de eerste keer in lange tijd zijn de 8 zusterschepen in handen van slechts twee cruiserederijen. Oceania Cruises heeft momenteel 4 schepen in hun bezit. De andere 4 vormen de vloot van Azamara Cruises.

EN: MS Sirena was originally built in 1999 as ‘R Four’ for Renaissance Cruises. It was one of no less than eight nearly identical ships built for the shipping company between 1998 and 2001 at the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in St Nazaire. The ships were given the temporary names ‘ R One’ to ‘R Eight’. It was planned to change the names later but the 9/11 attacks in New York threw a spanner in the works. With many people no longer wanting to travel, Renaissance Cruises, among others, could not get their ships filled, so they filed for bankruptcy as early as the end of September 2001.

Their eight ships were sold and taken over by various cruise lines. Over the years, all their ships changed owners and names several times.

MS R Four was taken over by Princess Cruises after the bankruptcy as Tahitian Princess. The ship sailed around with that name until 2009, after which it was renamed Ocean Princess by Princess Cruises. Since 2016, the ship has been sailing around under its current name for Oceania Cruises.

For the first time in a long time, the eight sister ships are owned by just two cruise lines. Oceania Cruises currently owns 4 ships. The other 4 make up Azamara Cruises' fleet.

MS Hamburg in Antwerpen | Nieuwe Livrei / New Livery – 2024

NL: Het kleine cruiseschip MS Hamburg van de Duitse rederij Plantours Kreuzfahrten kwam in 2024 opnieuw naar Antwerpen. De rederij viert haar 35-jarig bestaan met een volledig nieuwe huisstijl, waarbij ook MS Hamburg herschilderd werd.

EN: The German cruise line Plantours Kreuzfahrten's small cruise ship MS Hamburg visited Antwerp again in 2024. The cruise line is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a completely new house style, during which MS Hamburg was also repainted.

NL: De Duitse rederij Plantours Kreufahrten uit Bremen bestaat 35 jaar in 2024. Dit viert de rederij met een volledig nieuwe huisstijl met het motto ‘Der Welt so Nah’ of ‘De Wereld zo Dichtbij’. De gekende kleuren geel en donkerblauw zijn nog steeds terug te vinden in de nieuwe livrei maar het donkerblauw neemt nu de bovenhand.  

De voormalige witte romp is vanaf nu donkerblauw geschilderd met witte ‘golven’ en daarboven de bekende gele lijn. Ook de schouw is nu overwegend donkerblauw en toont nu de naam van de rederij, namelijk ‘Plantours’. Ook de riviercruiseschepen van de rederij krijgen een gelijkaardige schildering.

EN: Bremen-based German cruise line Plantours Kreufahrten will be 35 years old in 2024. The shipping company will celebrate this with a completely new corporate identity with the motto 'Der Welt so Nah' or 'The World so Close'. The familiar colours yellow and dark blue can still be found in the new livery but the dark blue now takes the upper hand.

The former white hull is now painted dark blue with white 'waves' and above it the familiar yellow line. The funnel is now also predominantly dark blue and now displays the cruise line’s name, 'Plantours'. The company's river cruise ships will also receive similar paint scheme.

NL: MS Hamburg komt in 2024 twee keer naar Antwerpen, net als in 2022 en 2023. Het schip vaart telkens een cruise langs de West-Europa met een specifieke focus op de Kanaaleilanden met als vertrek- en aankomsthaven Hamburg in Duitsland. Sinds haar overname door Plantours Kreuzfahrten in 2012 lag MS Hamburg in totaal al 7 keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen.

Het schip werd in 1997 gebouwd voor de eveneens Duitse rederij Hapag-Lloyd Cruises als MS c. Columbus. De bouw van het schip begon op 5 september 1995 bij de MTW Schiffswerft GmbH, Wismar. Met haar lengte van slechts 144 meter en breedte van 21,5 meter kan het schip de Great Lakes bereiken. Het is een van de weinige schepen die in de sluizen past. Hiervoor werden de vleugels van de brug speciaal inklapbaar gemaakt. In mei 2004 lag MS c. Columbus ook in Antwerpen aangemeerd. Het is de enige keer dat het schip de stad bezocht onder die naam.

EN: MS Hamburg will visit Antwerp twice in 2024, as it did in 2022 and 2023. The ship will cruise Western Europe each time with a specific focus on the Channel Islands with Hamburg in Germany as the departure and arrival port. Since her acquisition by Plantours Kreuzfahrten in 2012, MS Hamburg has been docked in Antwerp a total of seven times.

The ship was built in 1997 for the also German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd Cruises as MS c. Columbus. Construction of the ship began on 5 September 1995 at MTW Schiffswerft GmbH, Wismar. With her length of only 144 metres and beam of 21.5 metres, the ship can reach the Great Lakes. It is one of the few ships that can fit in the locks. For this purpose, the wings of the bridge were specially made collapsible. In May 2004, MS c. Columbus was also docked in Antwerp. It is the only time the ship visited the city under that name.

MS Clio - Opening Cruiseseizoen 2024 / Opening Cruise Season 2024

NL: Het kleine expeditiecruiseschip MS Clio van de Amerikaanse rederij Grand Circle Cruise Line opende op 26 april het cruiseseizoen van 2024 in Antwerpen. Het is meteen ook het kleinste schip voor dit jaar.

EN: The small expedition cruise ship MS Clio of the American company Grand Circle Cruise opened the 2024 cruise season in Antwerp on 26 April. It is also the smallest ship that will visit this year.

NL: Met haar lengte van 100 meter is MS Clio het kleinste cruiseschip dat ooit een cruiseseizoen mocht openen in Antwerpen. In 2023 lag het schip al twee keer in Antwerpen en in 2024 staan er in totaal drie aanlopen gepland. In totaal heeft het schip plaats voor 89 passagiers in 45 cabines en staan er 60 bemanningsleden voor hen klaar.

Het schip werd in 1998 gebouwd in Frankrijk bij de werf ‘Chantiers Alstom Leroux Naval’ in St. Malo als ‘MS Le Levant’ voor de luxerederij Compagnie Du Ponant, tegenwoordig kortweg bekend als  Ponant. Le Levant vervoegde in 1998 het enige andere schip van de rederij: het zeiljacht ‘Le Ponant’.

‘Le Levant’ bleef in de vloot van Ponant tot 2012 waarna ze volledig heringericht werd en overgedragen werd aan Paul Gaugin Cruises. Voor die rederij voer het schip onder de naam ‘MS Tere Moana’ cruises naar Tahiti, Polynesië en Oceanië.

In december 2015 veranderde het schip dan, voorlopig voor de laaste keer, van eigenaar en werd het overgenomen door Grand Circle Cruise Line als MS Clio.

EN: At 100 metres long, MS Clio is the smallest cruise ship ever allowed to open a cruise season in Antwerp. The ship was already in Antwerp twice in 2023 and a total of three calls are planned in 2024. In total, the ship has room for 89 passengers in 45 cabins and 60 crew members are waiting for them.

The ship was built in 1998 in France at the shipyard 'Chantiers Alstom Leroux Naval' in St Malo as 'MS Le Levant' for the luxury cruise line Compagnie Du Ponant, today known simply as Ponant. Le Levant joined the company's only other ship in 1998: the sailing yacht 'Le Ponant'.

'Le Levant' remained in Ponant's fleet until 2012 after which she was completely refitted and transferred to Paul Gaugin Cruises. For that cruise line, the ship sailed cruises to Tahiti, Polynesia and Oceania under the name 'MS Tere Moana'.

In December 2015, the ship once again changed hands, for the last time for now, and was taken over by Grand Circle Cruise Line as MS Clio.

Antwerpen - Officiële Cruiselijst 2024 / Official Cruise List 2024

NL: MS Clio komt op 26 april als eerste zeecruiseschip voor 2024 naar Antwerpen. In totaal worden er dit jaar 24 aanlopen verwacht waarvan 5 schepen voor de eerste keer naar de Scheldestad zullen komen.

EN: MS Clio will come to Antwerp on 26 April as the first sea cruise ship for 2024. A total of 24 calls are expected this year, of which five ships will come to the city for the first time.

NL: Dit jaar laat het eerste zeecruiseschip langer op zich wachten. Op vrijdag 26 april komt MS Clio naar Antwerpen. Het kleinste cruiseschip voor 2024 opent dit jaar het cruiseseizoen en zal in mei nog twee keer terugkomen. Diezelfde maand zal ook het luxecruiseschip Seabourn Ovation nog een bezoek brengen aan de stad.

In juni komen er in het tweede deel van de maand vier schepen kort na elkaar: MS Ambition, MS Europa, MS Hamburg en ook het grootste cruiseschip voor 2024, MS Marina, met haar lengte van 238 meter.

De eerste twee ‘maiden calls’ voor 2024 zullen plaats vinden in juli. De Amerikaanse luxerederij Regent Seven Seas Cruises lijkt de weg gevonden te hebben naar Antwerpen. Tot nu toe kwam enkel hun Seven Seas Navigator naar de stad, maar dit jaar sturen ze drie van hun andere schepen stroomopwaarts. Seven Seas Mariner en Seven Seas Voyager bezoeken Antwerpen in juli. Het derde schip, Seven Seas Splendor, bezoekt ons begin augustus voor de eerste keer. Begin augustus zal ook MS Europa 2 Antwerpen opnieuw een bezoek brengen.

EN: This year, the first sea cruise ship is taking longer to arrive. MS Clio visit Antwerp on Friday 26 April. The smallest cruise ship for 2024 opens the cruise season this year and will return twice more in May. That same month, the luxury cruise ship Seabourn Ovation will also visit the city.

In June, four ships will visit in quick succession in the second part of the month: MS Ambition, MS Europa, MS Hamburg and also the largest cruise ship for 2024, MS Marina, with its length of 238 metres.

The first two 'maiden calls' for 2024 will take place in July. US luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises seems to have found its way to Antwerp. Until now, only their Seven Seas Navigator came to the city, but this year they are sending three of their other ships upstream. Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Voyager will visit Antwerp in July. The third ship, Seven Seas Splendor, will visit us for the first time in early August. MS Europa 2 will also visit Antwerp again in early August.

NL: Azamara stuurt begin september hun nieuwste schip, MS Azamara Onward, voor de eerste keer richting Antwerpen voor een overnachting. De laatste van de 5 maiden calls staat midden oktober gepland voor MS Sirena van Oceania Cruises. Dit schip is een zusterschip van MS Azamara Onward. Beide schepen werden eind jaren ‘90 gebouwd voor Renaissance Cruises.

De rest van het najaar bestaat uit aanlopen van oude bekenden. Zo bezoek MS Ambition van Ambassador Cruise Line de stad nog drie keer. Ook MS Artania van Phoenix Reisen komt nog drie keer naar Antwerpen en zal op 19 december het cruiseseizoen ook afsluiten. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines komt dit jaar maar één keer naar Antwerpen, maar wel opnieuw met MS Balmoral. Het zal de eerste aanloop zijn van het schip sinds 2019.

Zoals steeds is de info onder voorbehoud van wijzigingen en kunnen er in de loop van het jaar nog extra aanlopen bijkomen.

EN: Azamara is sending their newest ship, MS Azamara Onward, to Antwerp for the first time for an overnight stay in early September. The last of the 5 maiden calls is scheduled for MS Sirena of Oceania Cruises in mid-October. This ship is a sister ship to MS Azamara Onward. Both ships were built in the late 1990s for Renaissance Cruises.

The rest of the autumn consists of calls from old acquaintances. For instance, MS Ambition of Ambassador Cruise Line will visit the city three more times. Phoenix Reisen's MS Artania will also visit Antwerp three more times and will also close the cruise season on 19 December. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines will come to Antwerp only once this year, but again with MS Balmoral. It will be the ship's first call since 2019.

MS Ambition sluit Cruiseseizoen 2023 af / MS Ambition closes Cruise Season 2023

NL: MS Ambition van de Engelse rederij Ambassador Cruise Line sloot op 12 & 13 december het cruiseseizoen van 2023 af met een onverwachte extra aanloop. In totaal vonden er dit jaar 23 zeecruiseaanlopen plaats, goed voor rond 16.000 passagiers.

EN: MS Ambition of the UK cruise line Ambassador Cruise Line closed the 2023 cruise season on 12 & 13 December with an unexpected extra call. A total of 23 sea cruise calls took place this year, accounting for around 16.000 passengers.

NL: MS Ambition is de nieuwste aanwinst van de nieuwe Engelse rederij Ambassador Cruise Line. De rederij is de herrijzenis van Cruise & Maritime Voyages, die door de Coronacrisis failliet ging. MS Ambition kwam in 2022 bij hun vloot en was voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen te zien op 19 oktober 2023.

Met in totaal 23 zeecruiseaanlopen en rond 16.000 passagiers was 2023 een mooi cruisejaar. Het lijkt erop dat de cruise-industrie zich na enkele moeilijke jaren terug gestabiliseerd heeft. Er kwamen 17 verschillende schepen naar de Scheldestad van 16 verschillende rederijen en in totaal werden er 36 ligdagen geregistreerd.

EN: MS Ambition is the latest addition to new UK cruise line Ambassador Cruise Line. The cruise line is the resurrection of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which went bankrupt due to the Corona crisis. MS Ambition joined their fleet in 2022 and was first seen in Antwerp on 19 October 2023.

With a total of 23 sea cruise calls and around 16.000 passengers, 2023 was a good cruise season. It seems the cruise industry has stabilised again after a few difficult years. 17 different ships from 16 different cruise lines came to the city, accounting for a total of 36 berth days.

Na 24 Jaar Opnieuw in Antwerpen / After 24 Years Back in Antwerp

NL: Met haar paarse livrei is het schip een opvallende gast in de stad. Door de jaren heen heeft het schip al met 5 verschillende huisstijlen rondgevaren. In 1999 kwam het schip in de vaart voor Festival Cruises als MS Mistral. Nog voor haar allereerst reis, of Maiden Voyage, was het schip eind juni 1999 voor enkele dagen te gast in Antwerpen. Het eerste nieuwbouwschip van de rederij werd in de Scheldestad voorgesteld aan de pers en de reisagenten. Op 17 juli startte MS Mistral haar 7-daagse Maiden Voyage vanuit Genua.

Na het faillissement van Festival Cruises in 2004 werd het schip gekocht door de Spaanse rederij Ibero Cruceros als MS Grand Mistral. Als onderdeel van de Carnival Cooperation werd in 2014 besloten dat Ibero Cruceros volledig zou samengaan met Costa Cruises. Hierdoor werd het schip omgedoopt tot Costa neoRiviera. Na enkele jaren bij Costa werd het schip doorgegeven aan hun dochterrederij AIDA Cruises als MS AIDAmira waarvoor het cruises naar Afrika voer.

In april 2022 werd het schip gekocht door Ambassador Cruise Line. Vanaf september 2022 werd het schip voor 6 maanden gecharterd door de Schotse Regering om te dienen als tijdelijke onderkomst voor Oekraïense vluchtelingen in Glasgow. Op 11 mei 2023 werd het schip uiteindelijk gedoopt in Newcastle. Op 19 oktober 2023 kwam het schip na 24 jaar terug naar Antwerpen, dit keer voor de eerste keer als MS Ambition.

Oorspronkelijk zou MS Ambition het cruiseseizoen van 2023 afsluiten met haar aanloop op 9 en 10 december. Op het laatste moment werd echter beslist om het schip op 12 en 13 december opnieuw naar de Scheldestad te sturen. Bij het tweede schip van de rederij, MS Ambience, werd tijdens een gepland werfbezoek in Bremerhaven schade ontdekt aan een schroefas waardoor het schip tot begin januari in het droogdok moet blijven. Om de gedupeerde passagiers tegemoet te komen werden de cruises van MS Ambition aangepast. Er werd beslist om Hamburg in de volgende cruise te vervangen door Antwerpen. Hierdoor heeft MS Ambition maar liefst 3 keer achterelkaar heen en weer gevaren tussen Antwerpen en Tilbury in Engeland.

EN: With her purple livery, the ship is a striking guest in thr city. Over the years, the ship has sailed around with 5 different house styles. In 1999, the ship entered service for Festival Cruises as MS Mistral. Even before her Maiden Voyage the ship visited Antwerp for a few days at the end of June 1999. The cruise line’s first new-build ship was presented to the press and travel agents at the Scheldt Quays. On 17 July, MS Mistral started her 7-day Maiden Voyage from Genua.

Following the bankruptcy of Festival Cruises in 2004, the ship was bought by Spanish cruise line Ibero Cruceros as MS Grand Mistral. As part of the Carnival Cooperation, it was decided in 2014 that Ibero Cruceros would fully merge with Costa Cruises. As a result, the ship was renamed Costa neoRiviera. After several years with Costa, the ship was passed on to their subsidiary AIDA Cruises as MS AIDAmira for which it sailed cruises to Africa.

In April 2022, the ship was bought by Ambassador Cruise Line. From September 2022, the ship was chartered for six months by the Scottish Government to serve as a temporary shelter for Ukrainian refugees in Glasgow. On 11 May 2023, the ship was finally christened in Newcastle. On 19 October 2023, the ship returned to Antwerp after 24 years, this time for the first time as MS Ambition.

Originally, MS Ambition was supposed to close the 2023 cruise season with her call on 9 and 10 December. However, a last-minute decision was made to send the ship to Antwerp again on 12 and 13 December. On the cruise line’s second ship, MS Ambience, damage to a propeller shaft was discovered during a planned visit at the shipyard in Bremerhaven, requiring the ship to remain in dry dock until early January. To accommodate affected passengers, MS Ambition's cruises were adjusted. It was decided to replace Hamburg with Antwerp in the next cruise. As a result, MS Ambition sailed back and forth between Antwerp and Tilbury in England as many as three times in a row.

Vooruitblik naar 2024 / Looking Ahead to 2024

NL: Ook in 2024 staat MS Ambition verschillende keren gepland voor een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Momenteel staan er in totaal 24 zeecruiseaanlopen gepland en zullen 5 cruiseschepen voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komen. Drie daarvan zijn schepen van dezelfde luxerederij: Regent Seven Seas. Het cruiseseizoen voor 2024 zal op 19 april geopend worden door Seabourn Ovation van de luxerederij Seabourn. Alle informatie is zoals altijd wel onder voorbehoud van wijzigingen.
