Cruiseschip The World in Antwerpen – 2023

NL: Het private residentiële cruiseschip The World kwam eind juni 2023 opnieuw naar Antwerpen voor enkele dagen. Het was de vierde keer dat het schip te zien was in de Scheldestad. Aan boord bevinden zich 165 residenties waarvan de meeste enkel gekocht kunnen worden.

EN: The private residential cruise ship The World visited Antwerp again for a few days at the end of June 2023. It is the fourth time the ship has docked in the city. On board are 165 residences, most of which can only be bought.

NL: The World is op veel vlakken een atypisch schip. Qua exterieur past het schip perfect tussen de cruiseschepen die overal ter wereld rondvaren, toch promoot de Amerikaanse rederij Residensea het schip als het grootste private residentiële luxejacht ter wereld. Het is namelijk niet mogelijk om zomaar een cruise te boeken op het schip. Elk van de 165 residenties aan boord moeten gekocht worden, met uitzondering van enkele residenties die te huur zijn.

De residenties verschillen sterk van grootte en prijs. Residensea vermeldt zelf geen prijzen op hun website, maar in nieuwsartikels wordt gesproken over prijzen tussen $600.000 en $13 miljoen. Voor dat prijskaartje krijg je een studio of appartement tussen 27m² en 301m². Voordat je de aankoop kan doen, moet je wel nog kunnen bewijzen dat je nettowaarde meer dan $5 miljoen is. Voor het jaarlijkse onderhoud mag je namelijk nog eens 10 tot 15% van de aankoopprijs rekenen.

EN: The World is an atypical ship in many ways. In terms of exterior, the ship fits perfectly among the cruise ships sailing around the world, yet the US shipping company Residensea promotes the ship as the largest private residential luxury yacht in the world. It is not possible to just book a cruise on the ship. Each of the 165 residences on board must be purchased, except for some residences that are available for rent.

Residences vary greatly in size and price. Residensea itself does not list prices on their website, but news articles talk about prices between $600,000 and $13 million. For that price tag, you get a studio or apartment between 27m² and 301m². Before you can make the purchase, though, you still have to be able to prove that your net worth is more than $5 million, as you may calculate another 10-15% of the purchase price for annual maintenance.

Kies zelf je cruise / Choose your own cruise

NL: Residensea biedt hun passagiers ook de optie om zelf mee te beslissen welke havens ze willen bezoeken. De routes worden twee jaar op voorhand vastgelegd na overleg met de passagiers, kapitein en de planners. Hierdoor duurt er meestal een aantal jaar voordat het schip terugkeert naar een bepaalde haven. Sinds de indienstname van The World in 2002 heeft het schip vier keer in Antwerpen gelegen: in 2005, 2011, 2015 en nu in 2023. In elke haven blijft het schip ook meerdere dagen om hun gasten op een rustige manier de havens te laten ontdekken. Normaal gezien moest het schip in 2020 ook aan de Scheldekaaien liggen, maar dat werd uitgesteld door de coronapandemie.

EN: Residensea also offers their passengers the option to help decide which ports to visit. Routes are fixed two years in advance after consultation with the passengers, captain and planners. As a result, it usually takes several years before the ship returns to a particular port. Since The World was commissioned in 2002, the ship has been in Antwerp four times: in 2005, 2011, 2015 and now in 2023. In each port, the ship also stays for several days to let their guests explore the ports at leisure. Normally in 2020, the ship was also supposed to be visiting the city, but that was postponed due to the corona pandemic.

Van Supermarkt tot Wijnkluis / From Supermarket to Wine Vault

NL: Het interieur van het schip is op veel vlakken te vergelijken met andere luxecruiseschepen. Er is veel ruimte want aan boord zijn maar tussen 150 en 200 passagiers, waarvoor een 250-koppige bemanning klaarstaat. Er zijn ook vier schillende restaurants aan boord die elk een andere focus hebben. Zo kan er gekozen worden uit de Aziatische keuken, Mediterrane keuken, Haute Cuisine en een restaurant met vis en zeevruchten.

Wat The World uniek maakt is dat er ook een supermarkt aan boord te vinden is: Fredy’s Deli Marketplace. Hier vinden de gasten verse groenten en fruit, kruiden, sausen, snacks en zelfs ijscrème in de diepvries. Met die producten kunnen ze dan zelf aan het werk in hun eigen keuken. Verbonden aan de supermarkt is ook nog een bistro waar ontbijt word geserveerd en waar ook gerechten opgediend worden die gemaakt zijn met de lokale producten van de streek waar het schip op dat moment aangemeerd ligt. Op een luxeschip mag natuurlijk ook de wijn niet ontbreken. In een speciale wijnkluis liggen maar liefst 14.000 flessen opgeslagen van 19 verschillende landen. Die worden aangeboden in de verschillende restaurants, waar de gasten dan de keuze hebben uit 1100 verschillende wijnen. 

Naast het culinaire aspect heeft het schip ook twee zwembaden aan boord, twee minigolfbanen, een uitgebreid wellness center, een theater, een unieke kunstgalerij en zelfs een kapel. Voor de gasten is het ook mogelijk om per helikopter van en naar het schip gebracht te worden. Op de boeg is hiervoor een heliplatform voorzien.

EN: The interior of the ship is comparable to other luxury cruise ships in many ways. There is plenty of space as there are only between 150 and 200 passengers on board, for whom a 250-strong crew is on hand. There are also four different restaurants on board, each with a different focus. These include Asian cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine, Haute Cuisine and a seafood restaurant.

What makes The World unique is that a supermarket can also be found on board: Fredy's Deli Marketplace. Here, guests will find fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, sauces, snacks and even ice cream cream in the freezer. These products can then be used in their own kitchens. Linked to the supermarket is also a bistro where breakfast is served and where dishes made with local produce from the area where the ship is currently berthed are also served. On a luxury ship, wine is of course a must. As many as 14,000 bottles from 19 different countries are stored in a special wine vault. These are offered in the various restaurants, where guests then have a choice of 1,100 different wines. 

Besides the culinary aspect, the ship also has two swimming pools on board, two mini-golf courses, an extensive wellness centre, a theatre, a unique art gallery and even a chapel. For guests, it is also possible to be taken to and from the ship by helicopter. A helipad is provided on the bow for this purpose.

2023 World Cruise

NL: Tijdens haar wereldcruise in 2023 zal The World elke oceaan bevaren en 6 continenten bezoeken. Begin dit jaar vertrok het schip vanuit Dubai richting Indië. Van daaruit ging het via Sri Lanka naar de Maladieven en de Seychellen. Na enkele stops in het Midden Oosten ging het via het Suezkanaal naar de Middellandse Zee, waar het schip twee maanden heeft rondgevaren. Nadien zette het koers op West-Europa. Het schip kwam vanuit het Engelse Tibury naar Antwerpen en zal vanaf hier richting Bremen in Duitsland gaan. Daarna gaat het na enkele tussenstops in de Oostzee richting Noorwegen en IJsland waarna verder wordt overgestoken richting Groenland waar expedities georganiseerd zullen worden.

Vanaf daar gaat het terug Zuidwaarts richting Canada en de Verenigde Staten. Via de Caraïben en Zuid-Amerika zal het schip uiteindelijk uiteindelijke de Drake Passage naar Antarctica oversteken. Zelfs voor The World is Antarctica als bestemming iets uniek. De passagiers zullen Nieuwjaar kunnen doorbrengen op het witte continent.

EN: During her 2023 world cruise, The World will sail every ocean and visit six continents. Earlier this year, the ship left Dubai for India. From there, it went via Sri Lanka to the Maladives and Seychelles. After a few stops in the Middle East, it went via the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean, where the ship sailed around for two months. Afterwards, it set sail for Western Europe. The ship came to Antwerp from Tibury, England, and from here it will head for Bremen in Germany. Then, after several stops in the Baltic Sea, it will head towards Norway and Iceland after which it will continue crossing towards Greenland where expeditions will be organised.

From there, it will head back south towards Canada and the United States. Via the Caribbean and South America, the ship will finally cross the Drake Passage to Antarctica. Even for The World, Antarctica as a destination is something unique. Passengers will be able to spend New Year on the white continent.

MS Ocean Nova & Dar Młodzieży in Antwerpen - April 2023

NL: Het expeditiecruiseschip Ocean Nova kwam op 21 april 2023 voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen. Het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży keerde diezelfde dag ook terug van haar 15^de zeestage met de Antwerp Maritime Academy. Beide schepen meerden aan aan het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.

EN: The expedition cruise ship Ocean Nova came to Antwerp for the first time on 21 April 2023. The Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży also returned the same day from her 15th sea stint for the Antwerp Maritime Academy. Both ships moored at the cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.

NL: Het 73 meter lange expeditiecruiseschip Ocean Nova kwam op vrijdag 21 april voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen. Het is het kleinste cruiseschip dat dit jaar naar Antwerpen zal komen en het is het op één na kleinste cruiseschip dat ooit in de Scheldestad geweest is. De Ocean Nova werd gebouwd in 1991 en heeft plaats aan boord voor 78 passagiers. Dankzij haar versterkte romp kan het schip ook cruises varen in Antarctica. Tijdens haar bezoek aan Antwerpen voer de Ocean Nova een cruise langs het Kanaal en Denemarken. Vanuit Antwerpen voer het schip rechtstreeks naar Zeebrugge om daarna het Kanaal over te varen richting het Engelse Tilbury.

EN: The 73-metre expedition cruise ship Ocean Nova came to Antwerp for the first time on Friday 21 April. It is the smallest cruise ship to come to Antwerp this year and is the second smallest cruise ship ever the city. The Ocean Nova was built in 1991 and has room on board for 78 passengers. Thanks to its reinforced hull, the ship can also sail cruises in Antarctica. During her visit to Antwerp, the Ocean Nova was sailing a cruise along the English Channel and Denmark. From Antwerp, the ship sailed directly to Zeebrugge before crossing the Channel towards Tilbury in England.

NL: De cruiseaanloop van de Ocean Nova viel samen met de terugkomst van het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży. Na vier weken meerde het Poolse schoolschip rond 14:00u opnieuw aan in Antwerpen. Het schip wordt elk jaar ingezet voor de Antwerp Maritime Academy, vroeger gekend als de Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen, voor een zeestage met hun eerstejaarsstudenten. Het was de 15^de keer dat er zo’n zeestage georganiseerd werd op het schip. Een deel van de eerstejaarsstudenten was in de masten geklommen voor de aankomst aan de Scheldekaaien. Doordat de Ocean Nova niet veel plaats innam aan het cruiseponton werd er besloten om de Dar Młodzieży ook aan het ponton te laten aanmeren.

Dar Młodzieży vertrok op zondagavond opnieuw uit Antwerpen. De volgende bestemming is de haven van Hamburg in Duitsland, waar het schip op 5 mei zal aankomen. Van daaruit gaan ze via het Zweedse Stockholm terug richting Gdynia in Polen.

EN: The cruise call of the Ocean Nova coincided with the return of the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży. After four weeks, the Polish school ship docked in Antwerp again around 14:00h. The ship is used every year by the Antwerp Maritime Academy to organise a traineeship. It was the 15th time such a sea traineeship was organised on the ship. Several of the first-year students had climbed the masts while arriving back at the Scheldt quays in Antwerp. As the Ocean Nova did not take up much space on the cruise pontoon, it was decided that the Dar Młodzieży would also dock on the pontoon.

Dar Młodzieży left Antwerp again on Sunday evening. The next destination is the port of Hamburg in Germany, where the ship will arrive on 5 May. From there, they will head back to Gdynia in Poland via Stockholm, Sweden.

Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II in Antwerpen 2023

NL: Het Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II kwam op 2 april 2023 aan in Antwerpen voor een vijfdaags bezoek. Het schip vaart momenteel een “schoolcruise” met het Canadese project ‘Class Afloat’, waarbij studenten kunnen studeren aan boord van het schip terwijl ze de wereld rondvaren.

EN: The Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II arrived in Antwerp on 2 April 2023 for a five-day visit. The ship is currently sailing a "school cruise" with the Canadian project 'Class Afloat', where students can study aboard the ship while sailing around the world.

NL: Het groene Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II, dat trouwens ook groene zeilen heeft, kwam op zondag 2 april aan in Antwerpen. Het schip zal vijf dagen aan het cruiseponton blijven liggen, tot donderdag 6 april.

Alexander von Humboldt II is een vrij nieuw zeilschip. Het werd in 2011 gebouwd bij de scheepswerf Brenn- und Verformtechnik (BVT) in de Duitse stad Bremen. Het was het eerste grote zeilschip dat in Duitsland gebouwd werd sinds 1994. Het vervangt de originele Alexander von Humboldt die in 2011 uit de vaart werd genomen en momenteel in Bremen dienst doet als hotelschip.

Alexander von Humboldt II wordt uitgebaat door de rederij Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training en iedereen tussen 14 en 75 jaar oud komt in aanmerking om mee te varen met het schip. In totaal is er aan boord plaats voor 79 personen.

EN: The green Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt II, which also has green sails, arrived in Antwerp on Sunday April 2nd. The ship will stay docked at the cruise pontoon for five days, until Thursday April 6th.

Alexander von Humboldt II is a fairly new sailing ship. It was built in 2011 at the Brenn- und Verformtechnik (BVT) shipyard in the German city of Bremen. It was the first large sailing ship built in Germany since 1994. It replaced the original Alexander von Humboldt, which was decommissioned in 2011 and currently serves as a hotel ship in Bremen.

Alexander von Humboldt II is operated by the shipping company Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training and anyone between the age of 14 and 75 is eligible to sail on the ship. In total, there is room on board for 79 people.

Class Afloat

NL: Vorig jaar lag Alexander von Humboldt II nog in Antwerpen tijdens The Tall Ships Races. Dit jaar bezoekt het schip de stad in een andere hoedanigheid. Momenteel vaart het de wereld rond voor het Canadese project ‘Class Afloat’. Het West Island College International organiseert elk jaar een schoolcruise op het Tall Ship met een erkende schoolopleiding, naar het Canadese model.

Het schooljaar is onderverdeeld in twee semesters: september tot januari en mei tot september. De studenten kunnen zelf kiezen of ze voor één of twee semesters deelnemen, of zelfs in sommige gevallen voor meer dan twee semesters. Het schooljaar is een combinatie van een reis op het vaste land, gecombineerd met een lange vaart op de Alexander von Humboldt II. Er worden namelijk niet enkel havens in Europa aangelopen maar ook havens in bijvoorbeeld de Caraïben, Zuid-Amerika en Afrika. Naargelang het studietraject dat gekozen wordt, wordt er tot 5 uur les per dag gevolgd. Het project bestaat al sinds 1984.

In de zomermaanden, wanneer de studenten niet aan boord zijn, neemt de Alexander von Humboldt II deel aan de grote zeilevenementen zoals The Tall Ships Races, en andere bijeenkomsten van unieke schepen.

EN: Last year, Alexander von Humboldt II was still in Antwerp during The Tall Ships Races. This year, the ship is visiting the city for a different reason. It is currently sailing around the world for the Canadian project 'Class Afloat'. The West Island College International organises a school cruise on the Tall Ship every year with an approved school curriculum, following the Canadian model.

The school year is divided into two semesters: September to January and May to September. Students can choose whether to participate for one or two semesters, or even in some cases for more than two semesters. The school year is a combination of mainland travel, combined with a long sailing on the Alexander von Humboldt II. Not only ports in Europe are visited, but also ports in, for example, the Caribbean, South America and Africa. Depending on the study route chosen, up to five hours of lessons per day are taken. The project has existed since 1984.

During the summer months, when the students are not on board, the Alexander von Humboldt II participates in major sailing events such as The Tall Ships Races, and other gatherings of unique ships.

Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży in Antwerpen in 2023

NL: Het Poolse Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży bracht op 24 en 25 maart 2023 opnieuw een bezoek in Antwerpen. Voor de 15^de keer vertrekken de eerstejaarsstudenten van de Antwerp Maritime Academy op een 4 weken lange zeestage met de driemaster.

EN: The Polish Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży paid another visit to Antwerp on 24 and 25 March 2023. For the 15th time, the first-year students of the Antwerp Maritime Academy set off on a 4-week nautical internship with the three-master.

NL: De Antwerp Maritime Academy, vroeger bekend als de Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen, organiseert in 2023 opnieuw een zeestage voor hun eerstejaarsstudenten. Het is al de 15^de keer dat er zo’n opleiding georganiseerd wordt. Dankzij een samenwerking met de Gdynia Maritime Academy in Polen wordt de majestueuze driemaster Dar Młodzieży elk jaar ter beschikking gesteld voor de vaart.

Dar Młodzieży meerde op vrijdagsnamiddag aan bij het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras. Daar schepen op zaterdag 120 studenten in, samen met hun coaches. De vier weken durende zeestage brengt hen naar Funchal op Madeira waarna ze terug koers zetten naar Antwerpen. Het schip zal terug aankomen in de Scheldestad op 21 april, rond 14:00u. 

EN: The Antwerp Maritime Academy, formerly known as the Hogere Zeevaartschool Antwerpen, is once again organising a sea traineeship for their first-year students in 2023. It is already the 15th time such a course has been organised. Thanks to a cooperation with the Gdynia Maritime Academy in Poland, the majestic three-master Dar Młodzieży is made available for sailing every year.

Dar Młodzieży docked at the cruise pontoon in Antwerp on Friday afternoon. There, 120 students embarked on Saturday, along with their coaches. The four-week sea internship will take them to Funchal on the island of Madeira after which they will set sail back to Antwerp. The ship will arrive back in the city on April 21st, around 14:00h.

NL: Dar Młodzieży werd in 1982 gebouwd voor de Gdynia Maritime Academy bij de Poolse scheepswerf Gdansk Shipyard in de gelijknamige stad. Ze werd ontworpen om het toenmalige opleidingsschip Dar Pomorza te vervangen, dat toen al meer dan vijftig jaar lang ingezet werd om nieuwe rekruten op te leiden. Dar Młodzieży, wat vertaald wordt als ‘Gift van de Jeugd’, bleek na de oplevering zo populair te zijn dat er nog 5 zusterschepen gebouwd werden: Druzhba (1987), Khersones (1988), Mir (1987), Pallada (1983) en Nasheba (1992)

Omdat het schip specifiek gebouwd werd voor studenten werd er ook een klaslokaal voorzien aan boord. Naast de gewone navigatiebrug van waaruit het schip gestuurd wordt, is er ook nog een tweede brug die uitgerust is met dezelfde instrumenten en kaarttafels. Op die manier kunnen de studenten ook zelf navigeren.

Het schip doet, zoals de meeste Tall Ships die nog rondvaren, regelmatig mee aan de Tall Ships Races en de andere bijeenkomsten van zeilschepen en historische schepen wereldwijd. Dankzij de samenwerking met de Antwerp Maritime Academy is Dar Młodzieży zo goed als elk jaar te gast in Antwerpen. Ook tijdens de edities van The Tall Ships Races is ze steeds van de partij.

EN: Dar Młodzieży was built in 1982 for the Gdynia Maritime Academy at the Polish shipyard Gdansk Shipyard in the city of the same name. She was designed to replace the previous training ship Dar Pomorza, which had by then been used to train new recruits for more than 50 years. Dar Młodzieży, which translates as 'Gift of Youth', proved so popular after delivery that five more sister ships were built: Druzhba (1987), Khersones (1988), Mir (1987), Pallada (1983) and Nasheba (1992).

As the ship was built specifically for students, a classroom was also provided on board. Besides the regular navigation bridge from which the ship is steered, there is also a second bridge equipped with the same instruments and chart tables. This way, the students can also navigate themselves.
The ship, like most Tall Ships still around, regularly participates in the Tall Ships Races and the other meetings of sailing ships and historical ships worldwide. Thanks to its cooperation with the Antwerp Maritime Academy, Dar Młodzieży visits Antwerp just about every year. She is also always present during the editions of The Tall Ships Races.

MS Spirit of Adventure opent Cruiseseizoen 2023 / MS Spirit of Adventure opens Cruise Season 2023

NL: Het 236-meter lange cruiseschip MS Spirit of Adventure lag op 10 & 11 februari 2023 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het schip had dit jaar de eer om het cruiseseizoen te openen. Schepen van Toerisme Koen Kennis sprak de pers toe aan boord van het schip.

EN: The 236-metre cruise ship MS Spirit of Adventure docked in Antwerp for the first time on 10 & 11 February 2023. The ship had the honour of opening this year's cruise season. Alderman for Tourism Koen Kennis addressed the press on board the ship.

NL: De opening van het cruiseseizoen gaat naar gewoonte gepaard met een persmoment aan boord van het eerste cruiseschip. Dit jaar was het extra speciaal omdat MS Spirit of Adventure voor de eerste keer in Antwerpen lag. Kapitein Franko Papić kreeg voor deze ‘maiden call’ enkele geschenken van de Stad overhandigd door de schepen van Toerisme Koen Kennis. De Stad Antwerpen kreeg op haar beurt een plaquette overhandigd van het schip. Voor de kapitein was het niet het eerste bezoek aan Antwerpen, want hij bracht vorig jaar ook het zusterschip Spirit of Discovery naar de Scheldestad.

EN: As usual, the opening of the cruise season is accompanied by a press moment on board the first cruise ship. This year it was extra special because MS Spirit of Adventure docked in Antwerp for the first time. Captain Franko Papić was presented with some gifts from the City of Antwerp by Tourism alderman Koen Kennis for this 'maiden call'. In turn, the City of Antwerp was presented with a plaque of the ship. For the captain, it was not the first visit to Antwerp, as he also brought the sister ship Spirit of Discovery to Antwerp last year.

NL: MS Spirit of Adventure is het tweede nieuwbouwschip van de Engelse rederij Saga Cruises. Haar zusterschip, MS Spirit of Discovery, lag in 2022 nog aangemeerd aan de Scheldekaaien. MS Spirit of Adventure werd in september 2020 opgeleverd door de Duitse scheepswerf Meyer Werft. Door de coronapandemie kwam ze echter pas in juli 2021 in vaart. Qua indeling zijn beide zusterschepen zo goed als gelijk. Wat wel sterk varieert is de stijl van het interieur. Waar de Spirit of Discovery specifiek ontworpen werd als een ouder, klassiek cruiseschip met de grandeur van toen, kreeg de Spirit of Adventure een veel moderner interieurdesign met strakkere lijnen, wat vooral opvalt aan de grote witte traphal in het midden van het schip.

Net zoals alle andere schepen die Saga Cruises doorheen de jaren gehad heeft, kunnen enkel vijftigplussers een cruise boeken op de schepen. Dit zorgt ervoor dat er steeds een serene sfeer hangt aan boord.

EN: MS Spirit of Adventure is the second new-build ship of UK-based company Saga Cruises. Her sister ship, MS Spirit of Discovery, visited Antwerp in 2022. MS Spirit of Adventure was delivered by German shipyard Meyer Werft in September 2020. However, due to the corona pandemic, she did not enter service until July 2021. In terms of layout, both sister ships are pretty much the same. What does vary greatly is the style of the interior. Whereas the Spirit of Discovery was specifically designed as an older, classic cruise ship with the grandeur of the old times, the Spirit of Adventure was given a much more modern interior design with tighter lines, which is particularly noticeable in the large white stairwell in the centre of the ship.

Like all the other ships Saga Cruises has the policy that you can only book a cruise with them if you are 50-year-old, or over. This ensures that there is always a serene atmosphere on board.

Cruiseseizoen 2023 / Cruise Season 2023

NL: Het toerisme in Antwerpen lijkt zich terug te herstellen na de moeilijke voorbije jaren en ook het cruisetoerisme hoort hierbij. Voor de zeecruises krijgen we na drie moeilijke jaren opnieuw een mooie lijst te zien. Met 23 geplande zeecruiseaanlopen zitten we bijna terug op het gemiddelde van voor de pandemie en verwachten we in 2023 rond de 15.000 passagiers. Zeven schepen zullen voor het eerst naar de stad komen. Het eerstvolgende cruiseschip, MS Ocean Nova op 21 april, zal eveneens een ‘maiden call’ zijn.

Ook de riviercruises zijn helemaal terug van weggeweest. Met opnieuw meer dan 700 geplande aanlopen zitten we ook hier terug rond de cijfers van 2019. Die 700 aanlopen zullen goed zijn voor bijna 114.000 riviercruisepassagiers.

EN: Tourism in Antwerp seems to be recovering after the difficult past years. For sea cruises, after three difficult years, we are once again presented with a nice list of cruise calls. With 23 scheduled sea cruise calls, we are almost back to the pre-pandemic average and expect around 15,000 passengers in 2023. Seven ships will be coming to town for the first time. The next cruise ship, MS Ocean Nova on 21 April, will also be a maiden call.

River cruise ship are also fully back. With again more than 700 scheduled calls, here too we have rissen to almost the 2019-figures. The 700 calls will in total account for nearly 114,000 river cruise passengers.

Antwerpen - Officiële Cruiselijst 2023 / Official Cruise List 2023

NL: Antwerpen mag in 2023 haar eerste zeecruiseschip al ontvangen in februari. De 236 meter lange Spirit of Adventure opent het seizoen en is meteen de eerste van 7 ‘maiden calls’ dit jaar. Als alles volgens plan verloopt zullen er in totaal 23 zeecruiseaanlopen plaatsvinden in 2023.

EN: Antwerp will already receive its first sea cruise ship of 2023 in February. The 236-metre-long Spirit of Adventure will open the season and will immediately be the first of 7 'maiden calls' this year. If all goes according to plan, there will be a total of 23 sea cruise calls in 2023.

NL: Het zeecruiseseizoen in Antwerpen begint dit jaar al op 10 februari met de komst van de Spirit of Adventure van de Engelse rederij Saga Cruises. Het 236 meter lange cruiseschip komt dit jaar voor de eerste keer naar de stad. Als er geen veranderingen meer zijn, zullen er 7 schepen voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komen in 2023.

De eerstvolgende ‘maiden call’ staat in april op naam van het kleine expeditiecruiseschip Ocean Nova. Met een lengte van 73 meter is het het kleinste cruiseschip voor 2023. Elk jaar is het schip ook te vinden in de antarctische wateren. Een ander klein schip dat dit jaar voor het eerst naar Antwerpen komt is de 100 meter lange MV Clio van Grand Circle Cruise Line. Dat schip zal ons in mei twee keer bezoeken.

Het enige residentiecruiseschip ter wereld, The World, staat ook gepland om Antwerpen opnieuw te bezoeken in 2023. Het schip zal van 29 juni tot en met 01/07 aan het Noorderterras aanmeren.

EN: The sea cruise season in Antwerp this year already starts on 10 February with the arrival of the Spirit of Adventure from English company Saga Cruises. The 236-metre cruise ship is coming to the city for the first time this year. If there are no more changes, seven ships will come to Antwerp for the first time in 2023.

The next 'maiden call' will be by the small expedition cruise ship Ocean Nova in April. At 73 metres long, it is the smallest cruise ship for 2023. Every year, the ship can also be found in antarctic waters. Another small ship coming to Antwerp for the first time this year is Grand Circle Cruise Line's 100-metre MV Clio. That ship will visit us twice in May.

The world's only residential cruise ship, The World, is also scheduled to visit Antwerp again in 2023. The ship will dock at the cruise terminal from 29 June to 01/07.

NL: Voor het eerst zal ook de 239 meter lange MS Riviera van Oceania Cruises naar Antwerpen komen. Haar zusterschip, MS Marina, kwam ook al enkele keren naar de stad. Het is ook het grootste schip dat dit jaar gepland staat.

Ook AIDAaura zal opnieuw naar Antwerpen komen. Spijtig genoeg heeft AIDA Cruises begin januari aangekondigd dat het schip eind september hun vloot zal verlaten. Wanneer het schip op 18 en 19/09 in Antwerpen aanmeert, zal ze bezig zijn aan haar allerlaatste cruise voor AIDA Cruises. MS AIDAaura is ook het enige schip van AIDA Cruises dat nog klein genoeg is om naar Antwerpen te komen. Wie dus nog eens een schip met de kenmerkende ogen en rode lippen wil zien, heeft dit jaar nog twee kansen: één in juni en één in september.

Nog in september zal MS World Odyssey van Semester at Sea naar Antwerpen komen. Het schoolcruiseschip bezoekt de stad aan het begin van haar wereldreis richting Japan. Het schip komt als World Odyssey voor het eerst naar Antwerpen, maar het bezocht de Scheldestad al verschillende keren als MS Deutschland. Sinds enkele jaren verandert het schip elk jaar van naam om in de zomermaanden als MS Deutschland te varen voor Phoenix Reisen, en van de herfst tot het voorjaar als MS World Odyssey te varen voor Semester At Sea.

EN: For the first time, Oceania Cruises' 239-metre MS Riviera will also come to Antwerp. Her sister ship, MS Marina, also came to the city several times already. It is also the largest ship scheduled this year.

AIDAaura will also come to Antwerp again. Unfortunately, AIDA Cruises announced in early January that the ship will leave their fleet at the end of September. When the ship docks in Antwerp on 18 and 19/09, she will be sailing her very last cruise for AIDA Cruises. MS AIDAaura is also the only ship of AIDA Cruises that is still small enough to come to Antwerp. So those wanting to see another ship with the distinctive eyes and red lips have two more chances this year: one in June and one in September.

Also in September, MS World Odyssey from Semester at Sea will come to Antwerp. The school cruise ship will visit the city at the beginning of its world cruise to Japan. The ship is coming to Antwerp for the first time as World Odyssey, but it already visited the city several times as MS Deutschland. For several years now, the ship changes its name every year to sail as MS Deutschland for Phoenix Reisen during the summer months, and from autumn to spring as MS World Odyssey for Semester At Sea.

NL: In oktober krijgen we laatste twee maiden calls op bezoek. Op 6 oktober staat Hanseatic Nature van Hapag-Lloyd Cruises gepland. Het is het laatste van de drie expeditiecruiseschepen dat nog niet in Antwerpen geweest is. Tijdens de vorig jaren kregen we Hanseatic Inspiration en Hanseatic Spirit al te zien.

Om af te sluiten zal MS Ambition van Ambassador Cruise Line in het najaar 4 keer naar Antwerpen komen. De maiden call staat gepland op 19 oktober. De nieuwe rederij is de herrijzenis van Cruise & Maritime Voyages, die dankzij de Covid-pandemie failliet ging.

Naast de schepen die voor de eerste keer naar de stad komen, zullen er ook veel oude bekenden langskomen.

EN: In October, we will receive our last two maiden calls. Hanseatic Nature of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is scheduled on 6 October. It is the last of the three expedition cruise ships that has not yet visited Antwerp. During previous years, we already got to see Hanseatic Inspiration and Hanseatic Spirit. 

To end the season, Ambassador Cruise Line's MS Ambition will come to Antwerp four times. The maiden call is scheduled for 19 October. The new cruise line is the resurrection of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which went bankrupt due to the Covid pandemic.

Besides the ships coming to the city for the first time, many old acquaintances will also be visiting.

MS Bolette sluit cruiseseizoen voor 2022 af / MS Bolette closes cruise season of 2022

NL: Voor het tweede jaar op heeft MS Bolette van Fred. Olsen Cruises Lines het zeecruiseseizoen in Antwerpen afgesloten. Met 20 aanlopen kunnen we, na twee slechte jaren, opnieuw spreken van een goed seizoen. Het aantal aanlopen blijft ook voor 2023 stabiel.

EN: For the second year on, MS Bolette of Fred. Olsen Cruises Lines closed the sea cruise season in Antwerp. With 20 calls, after two bad years, we can again speak of a good season. The number of calls also remains stable for 2023.

NL: MS Bolette kwam op 24 oktober met vijf uur vertraging aan in Antwerpen. Door de sterke wind was het niet mogelijk om het schip op de geplande tijd te beloodsen aan het loodsstation Steenbank. Er werd uiteindelijk ook nog besloten om niet de vaarroute via Zoutelande te nemen, maar om voor de bredere vaargeul te gaan, waardoor er ook nog extra omgevaren moest worden.

Bij de aankomst in Antwerpen zorgde de wind nog voor een spectaculair zwaaimanoeuvre, waarbij MS Bolette met behulp van een sleepboot vlak voor de kaai aan het loodswezen zwaaide en daarna achterwaarts naar het cruiseponton manoeuvreerde. Door de vertraagde aankomst liet het tij het toe om te zwaaien tijdens de aankomst. Dit had als voordeel dat het schip daardoor de volgende dag twee uur later kon vertrekken. Het was de derde aanloop van het schip in 2022 en telkens werd er ook een overnachting geboekt.

EN: MS Bolette arrived in Antwerp on 24 October with a five-hour delay. Due to strong winds, it was not possible to pilot the ship at Steenbank pilot station at the scheduled time. It was also eventually decided not to take the shipping route via Zoutelande, but to go for the wider channel, which also required additional detours.

On arrival in Antwerp, the wind caused a spectacular swinging manoeuvre, with MS Bolette turning right in front of the quay at the old pilot station with the help of a tugboat and then manoeuvring backwards towards the cruise pontoon. Due to the delayed arrival, the tide allowed it to turn during the arrival. This had the advantage of allowing the ship to depart two hours later the next day. It was the ship's third call in 2022 and each time an overnight stay was also booked.

Cruiseseizoen 2022 / Cruise Season 2022

NL: Na twee jaren waarin zo goed als elke cruiseaanloop geannuleerd werd, lijkt de cruise-industrie zich opnieuw wat te stabiliseren. Er wordt nog wel regelmatig geschoven met de vaarschema’s van de schepen door corona-maatregelen. Hierdoor werden er doorheen 2022 nog 6 aanlopen geannuleerd, sommige daarvan al enkele weken nadat ze aangekondigd werden, maar het merendeel van de reizen kon wel gewoon doorgaan zoals gepland.

In totaal kreeg Antwerpen dit jaar 20 zeecruiseaanlopen op bezoek. Die werden verdeeld onder 15 verschillende schepen van 13 verschillende rederijen. Zeven schepen bezochten de Scheldestad voor de eerste keer.

EN: After two years in which almost every cruise call was cancelled, the cruise industry seems to be stabilising somewhat again. However, there is still regular shuffling of ships' sailing schedules due to corona measures. As a result, 6 more calls were cancelled through 2022, some of them just weeks after they were announced, but the majority of the voyages were able to go ahead as planned.

In total, Antwerp received 20 sea cruise calls this year. These were divided among 15 different ships from 13 different shipping companies. Seven ships visited the city for the first time.

Vooruitblik naar 2023 / Looking ahead to 2023

NL: We kunnen ook al een voorzichtige vooruitblik doen naar het seizoen van 2023. Er kunnen nog steeds zaken veranderen, maar momenteel staan er 26 zeecruiseaanlopen gepland. Waarvan 6 schepen hun maiden call, of eerste aanloop, zullen maken in Antwerpen.

De opening van het cruiseseizoen staat gepland op 10 februari 2023. Dan zal MS Spirit of Adventure van Saga Cruises naar Antwerpen komen om te overnachten. Dat wordt ook ineens de eerste maiden call van het seizoen. In april 2022 lag haar zusterschip MS Spirit of Discovery ook al in de stad voor haar maiden call.

Twee verder blikvangers van het seizoen zijn de aanlopen van ‘The World’, ’s werelds enige private residentieschip en de aanloop van de prachtige ‘Sea Cloud Spirit’, ’s werelds nieuwste zeilcruiseschip.
