Antwerpen - Nieuwe Cruiseterminal ontvangt eerste Cruiseschip / New Cruise Terminal hosts first cruise ship

NL: Het cruiseschip MS Bolette van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines opende op 22 maart het cruiseseizoen van 2022. Het schip had de eer om de nieuwe cruiseterminal in gebruik te nemen. Het was de eerste van 23 zeecruiseaanlopen in Antwerpen voor 2022.

EN: The cruise ship MS Bolette of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines opened the cruise season of 2022 on 22 March. The ship had the honour of inaugurating the new cruise terminal. It was the first of 23 sea cruise calls in Antwerp for 2022.

NL: In 2021 werd het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras al officieel in gebruik genomen. Nu is ook de nieuwe cruiseterminal volledig operationeel. De terminal bevindt zich onderin de nieuwe aanbouw van het middeleeuws fort Het Steen. Momenteel is de verbinding tussen de cruiseterminal en het cruiseponton met tijdelijke hekken omheind. Binnenkort zullen er in de plaats daarvan vaste hekken geïnstalleerd worden. Die zullen zo geïnstalleerd worden dat de doorgang over de lengte van de kaaien geopend zal zijn als de terminal niet in gebruik is.

MS Bolette van de Engelse rederij Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines mocht als eerste zeecruiseschip gebruik maken van de nieuwe terminal. Het is het grootste cruiseschip dat dit jaar naar Antwerpen komt. Met haar 1300 passagiers was het ook ineens een goede stresstest om te zien hoe de afhandeling van een groot schip in de nieuwe terminal gebeurt.

EN: In 2021, the cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras was already officially put into use. Now, the new cruise terminal is also fully operational. The terminal is located at the bottom of the new extension of the medieval fort Het Steen. At the moment, the connection between the cruise terminal and the cruise pontoon is fenced off with temporary fences, but soon, permanent fences will be installed. They will be placed in such a way that the passageway along the length of the quays will be open when the terminal is not in use.

MS Bolette of the English company Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is the first sea cruise ship to use the new terminal. It is also the largest cruise ship to visit Antwerp this year. With its 1.300 passengers, it was also a good stress test to see how the handling of a large ship in the new terminal is done.

NL: Als alles volgens plan verloopt zullen er in 2022 in totaal 23 zeecruises aanmeren in Antwerpen, goed voor bijna 18.000 passagiers. MS Bolette zal zelf 4 van de aanlopen voor haar rekening nemen en zal dus nog 3 keer terugkomen dit jaar. Ook zullen er maar liefst 8 zeecruiseschepen voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komen.

Ook de riviercruiseschepen zijn dit jaar weer goed vertegenwoordigd met niet minder dan 626 verwachte aanlopen. In totaal zullen ze 105.000 toeristen naar Antwerpen brengen. De schepen zullen, als de capaciteit er zich toe leent ook kunnen aanmeren aan het nieuwe cruiseponton. Zoals altijd wordt ook het Kattendijkdok nog steeds gebruikt als aanlegplaats.

Reasearch Vessel Belgica – Maiden Call Antwerpen 2022

NL: Het splinternieuwe onderzoekschip Belgica lag op 15 en 16 maart 2022 voor de eerste keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen. Het schip is het drijvende laboratorium van Het Koninklijk Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen. RV Belgica zal jaarlijks naar Antwerpen komen om de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde te testen.

EN: The brand-new research vessel Belgica was docked in Antwerp for the first time on 15 and 16 March 2022. The ship is the floating laboratory of The Royal Institute of Natural Sciences. RV Belgica will come to Antwerp annually to test the water quality of the Scheldt.

NL: Het nieuwe onderzoekschip van de Belgische Marine bracht op 15 en 16 maart 2023 voor de eerste keer een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het schip vervangt de oude Belgica (A962) die van 1984 tot en met 2021 actief was. Door de ouderdom en de beperkte grootte voldeed het niet meer aan de hedendaagse eisen van een volledig uitgerust onderzoeksschip. Het schip werd daarom verkocht en is ondertussen alweer in zee gestoken als onderzoeksschip in Oekraïne.

EN: The Belgian Navy's new research ship paid its first visit to Antwerp on 15 and 16 March 2023. The ship replaces the old Belgica (A962), which operated from 1984 to 2021. Due to its age and limited size, it no longer met today's requirements of a fully equipped research vessel. The ship was therefore sold and has since been put to sea again as a research vessel in Ukraine.

Diepgaand onderzoek / In-depth research

NL: RV Belgica is met haar 71,4 meter lengte en 16,8 meter breedte veel groter dan haar voorganger. Dat biedt veel meer mogelijkheden voor onderzoek. Zo zal het schip dieper kunnen ingaan op thema’s waar haar voorganger ook onderzoek naar deed. Zo zal het schip ingezet worden om de waterkwaliteit na te gaan en de ecologie in de zee en Schelde. Ook de impact van de mens op het milieu met betrekking tot de windmolens op zee en de zandwinning wordt onderzocht. Een nieuwigheid op dit schip is dat het een volledige waterkolom kan analyseren, inclusief fauna, tot op een diepte van maar liefst 5000 meter. Het is ook mogelijk om de bodem in kaart te brengen.

EN: At 71.4 metres long and 16.8 metres wide, RV Belgica is much larger than its predecessor. This offers many more opportunities for research. For instance, the ship will be able to go deeper into themes that her predecessor also researched. The ship will be used to investigate water quality and ecology in the sea and Scheldt. Human impact on the environment with regard to offshore windmills and sand extraction will also be investigated. A new feature on this ship is that it can analyse an entire water column, including fauna, to a depth of as much as 5 000 metres. It is also possible to map the bottom.

NL: Het bezoek aan Antwerpen ging gepaard met een onderzoek van de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde. Hiervoor zijn er een dertigtal wetenschappers aan boord, alsook verschillende studenten. Het is de bedoeling dat de Belgica elk jaar naar Antwerpen zal komen om de waterkwaliteit van de Schelde na te kijken. Zo kan de evolutie van het water over de verschillende jaren onderzocht worden.

Het vaargebied van de Belgica beperkt zich echter niet enkel tot de Schelde en de Noordzee. Het is de bedoeling dat het schip ook expedities zal varen naar noordoostelijke Atlantische Oceaan, de Middellandse Zee en de Zwarte Zee. Ook reizen naar de Arctische wateren zijn tijdens de zomer mogelijk doordat het schip gebouwd werd met ijsklasse 1A.

EN: The visit to Antwerp was accompanied by a study of the water quality of the Scheldt. About 30 scientists are on board for this, as well as several students. The intention is that the Belgica will come to Antwerp every year to check the water quality of the Scheldt. In this way, the evolution of the water over the different years can be examined.

However, the Belgica's sailing area is not limited to the river Scheldt and the North Sea. It is planned that the ship will also sail expeditions to the north-east Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Voyages to Arctic waters are also possible during the summer as the ship was built with ice class 1A.

NL: Het cruiseseizoen van 2022 staat voor de deur. Op 22 maart zal MS Bolette van Fred. Olsen Cruises met een overnight call het startschot geven. In totaal worden er dit jaar 22 zeecruiseaanlopen verwacht aan de nieuwe cruiseterminal aan het Noorderterras.

EN: The 2022 cruise season is almost upon us. On 22 March, MS Bolette of Fred. Olsen Cruises will kick off the season with an overnight call. This year, a total of 22 sea cruise calls are expected at the new cruise terminal at the Noorderterras.

NL: Het is weer bijna zover. Op 22 en 23 maart zal MS Bolette van de Engelse rederij Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines het nieuwe cruiseseizoen openen. Als alles volgens plan gaat zullen er dit jaar 22 cruiseaanlopen plaatsvinden. Alle zeecruiseschepen zullen vanaf nu ook, zonder uitzondering, aanmeren aan de cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.

EN: It is almost time again. On 22 and 23 March, MS Bolette of the English shipping company Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines will open the new cruise season. Gevarieerd seizoen / Varied season

NL: Zoals het nu gepland staat zullen er in 2022 maar liefst 16 verschillende zeecruiseschepen naar Antwerpen komen. Een aantal schepen daarvan lagen de voorbije jaren al in Antwerpen, maar er staan ook 7 ‘maiden calls’ gepland, of schepen die voor de eerste keer naar de stad zullen komen. Enkele van die schepen stonden gepland om de voorbije twee jaar langs te komen, maar werden toen geannuleerd door het coronavirus.

De eerste maiden call staat gepland op 8 april met Hanseatic Spirit. Dat is het zusterschip van MS Hanseatic Inspiration die in 2019 haar allereerste reis startte in Antwerpen.

Tegen het einde van april zullen er nog 3 schepen voor de eerste keer langskomen. Op Paasmaandag zal MS Spirit of Discovery van Saga Cruises langskomen voor een overnight call. Het 236 meter lange schip werd pas in 2019 gebouwd. Op 26 en 29 april zullen respectievelijk Le Champlain van Ponant en MS Deutschland van Phoenix Reisen voor het eerst langskomen. Voor MS Deutschland is het de eerste keer dat ze onder de vlag van Phoenix Reisen naar Antwerpen komt. Vroeger is het schip hier al wel geweest voor Peter Deilmann Reederei.

EN: As things stand, no fewer than 16 different sea cruise ships will be coming to Antwerp in 2022. A number of these ships have already been in Antwerp in recent years, but there are also 7 'maiden calls' planned, or ships that will come to the city for the first time. Some of these ships were scheduled to visit in the past two years, but were then cancelled due to the coronavirus.

The first maiden call is scheduled for 8 April with Hanseatic Spirit. That is the sister ship of MS Hanseatic Inspiration that started her very first voyage in Antwerp in 2019.

Towards the end of April, three more ships will visit for the first time. On Easter Monday, MS Spirit of Discovery from Saga Cruises will stop by for an overnight call. The 236-metre ship was only built in 2019. On 26 and 29 April, respectively, Ponant's Le Champlain and Phoenix Reisen's MS Deutschland will call for the first time. For MS Deutschland it is the first time she comes to Antwerp under the flag of Phoenix Reisen. In the past the ship has been here for Peter Deilmann Reederei.

NL: Op 14 juni zal het zeilcruiseschip Sea Cloud Spirit voor de eerste keer naar Antwerpen komen. Dit klassiek tall ship werd pas in 2020 gebouwd, maar is qua uiterlijk niet te onderscheiden van de oudere zeilschepen.

Op 15 augustus komt MS Ocean Majesty van de Duitse rederij Hasa Touristik naar Antwerpen. Het schip werd gebouwd in 1966 en wordt daarmee al onder de oldtimers gerekend. 

Midden september krijgen we nog eens zoek van AIDA Cruises. Dit keer zal AIDAaura voor een overnight call naar Antwerpen komen. Anderhalve week later zal ze ook nog eens terugkomen.

Momenteel staat het gepland dat het cruiseseizoen afgesloten zal worden door twee aanlopen van MS Ambience van Ambassador Cruise Line. Die rederij is de herrijzenis van het failliet Cruise & Maritime Voyages. Het is wel nog niet volledig zeker of de twee aanlopen zullen plaatsvinden.

Hou er ook rekening mee dat verschillende rederijen door de coronacrisis nog niet op volle capaciteit varen waardoor hun cruises regelmatig opnieuw gepland worden. Dit kan natuurlijk ook impact hebben op de geplande aanlopen in Antwerpen. Voor de laatste informatie raden we aan om onze website in het oog te houden.

EN: On 14 June, the sailing cruise ship Sea Cloud Spirit will come to Antwerp for the first time. This classic tall ship was only built in 2020, but its appearance is indistinguishable from the older sailing ships.

On 15 August, MS Ocean Majesty of the German cruise line Hasa Touristik will come to Antwerp. The ship was built in 1966 and is therefore already considered an oldtimer. 

In mid-September we shall be receiving another visit from AIDA Cruises. This time AIDAaura will come to Antwerp for an overnight call. A week and a half later, she will also return again for a second call.

At the moment it is planned that the cruise season will be closed by two calls from MS Ambience of Ambassador Cruise Line. This shipping company is the resurrection of the bankrupt Cruise & Maritime Voyages. It is not yet completely certain that the two calls will take place.

Keep in mind that several shipping companies are not yet sailing at full capacity because of the corona crisis, which means that their cruises are regularly rescheduled. Renovatie Noorderterras 2022 / Renovation Noorderterras 2022

NL: Het Noorderterras, de verhoogde wandelpromenade aan de Jordaenskaai, zal in 2022 volledig gerenoveerd worden. Daarbij zal er op het terras ook deels een duinenlandschap aangeplant worden. Op die manier zal project ‘Kaailine’ de wandelterrassen langs de Schelde nieuw leven inblazen.

EN: The Noorderterras, the elevated promenade at the Jordaenskaai, will be completely renovated in 2022. In addition, a dune landscape will be partially planted on the terrace. In this way, the Kaailine project will breathe new life into the terraces along the Scheldt.

NL: Met het project ‘Kaailine’, een verwijzing naar het High Line Park in New York, wil de Stad Antwerpen het Noorderterras en Zuiderterras langs de Scheldekaaien opwaarderen en terug aantrekkelijker maken. Momenteel overheerst de graffiti nog op beide wandelterrassen, maar project ‘Kaailine’ voorziet een grondige renovatie van de beide geklasseerde bouwwerken zodat ze nadien opnieuw kunnen stralen in de grandeur van weleer. Daarbij zullen de terrassen ook vergroend worden met behulp van grote plantenbakken.

Eerder dit jaar werd aangekondigd dat het Zuiderterras eerst aan de beurt zou komen voor de renovatie. Spijtig genoeg werd er na onderzoek opgemerkt dat de kaaimuur daar eerst gestabiliseerd zal moeten worden. Daardoor werd ervoor gekozen om de focus te verleggen naar het Noorderterras.

EN: With the 'Kaailine' project, a reference to the High Line Park in New York, the City of Antwerp wants to upgrade the Noorderterras and Zuiderterras along the Scheldt quays and make them more attractive again. At the moment graffiti still dominates both terraces, but the 'Kaailine' project provides for a thorough renovation of both listed buildings so that they can once again shine in the grandeur of yesteryear. The terraces will also be made greener with the help of large plant containers.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the Zuiderterras would be renovated first. Unfortunately, after investigation it was noted that the quay wall there will first need to be stabilised. As a result, it was decided to shift the focus to the Noorderterrase.

Groene Boulevard / Green Boulevard

NL: Na de renovatie zal het Noorderterras veranderd zijn in een groene wandelboulevard. Voor de vergroening van het Noorderterras werd voor planten gekozen die gedijen in de buurt van de Schelde met haar brakke water. Er komen grote plantenvakken waarin mix van grassen zoals verbena of grote pimpernel geplant zal worden, die overgaan in struiken en heesters met een maximale hoogte van anderhalve meter. Daarnaast komen er ook zones met planten zoals zeekool, cipressenkruid en blauwspirea. De plantvakken zijn zo opgebouwd dat ze ook regenwater zullen kunnen bufferen.

“Omdat de plantvakken langs de stadszijde staan, blijft het zicht op de Schelde behouden. Het zitmeubilair, zowel vrijstaand en als onderdeel van de plantvakken, wordt eveneens met zicht op de Schelde geplaatst”, laat Schepen van Stadsontwikkeling Annick De Ridder weten. Verder zal er bij de renovatie van de terrassen ook bekeken worden of de daken deels opengemaakt kunnen worden zodat er meer licht tot op de kaaien komt.

Als alles goed gaat zullen de werken aan het Noorderterras starten in de zomer van 2022. Hierdoor zal het wandelterras ook een tijd afgesloten worden voor het publiek. ‘Kaailine’ maakt deel uit van het centrale deel van de Scheldekaaien, tussen Noorderterras en Zuiderterras. Voor dat deel is een ontwerp voor de kaaivlakte in opmaak. De heraanleg van de kaaien tussen Noorderterras en Steenplein, waarbij ook de ruimte onder het terras een nieuwe invulling krijgt, staat gepland vanaf het voorjaar van 2024.

EN: After the renovation, the Noorderterras will be transformed into a green pedestrian boulevard. To make the Noorderterras greener, plants were chosen that thrive in the vicinity of the Scheldt with its brackish water. There will be large planting beds in which a mixture of grasses such as verbena or large burnet will be planted, which will then change into shrubs and bushes with a maximum height of one and a half metres. There will also be zones with plants such as sea kale, cypress herb and bluespirea. The planting beds are constructed in such a way that they will also be able to buffer rainwater.

"Because the planting beds are on the city side, the view of the Scheldt is preserved. The seating, both free-standing and as part of the planting beds, will also be placed with a view of the Scheldt," says Annick De Ridder, Alderman for Urban Development. Furthermore, for the renovation of the terraces we will also examine whether the roofs can be partially opened up so that more light can reach the quays.

If all goes well, work on the Noorderterras will start in the summer of 2022. As a result, the walking terrace will be closed off to the public for a while. Kaailine' is part of the central part of the Scheldt quays, between Noorderterras and Zuiderterras. For that part, a design for the quay area is in preparation. The reconstruction of the quays between the Noorderterras and the Steenplein, whereby the space under the terrace will also be given a new interpretation, is planned from the spring of 2024.

NL: Het cruiseschip Bolette van de Engelse rederij Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines bracht op 5 en 6 november 2021 voor de eerste keer een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het schip meerde aan aan het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.

NL: Met de cruiseaanloop van MS Bolette op 5 en 6 november werd het korte cruiseseizoen van 2021 beëindigd. Antwerpen mocht dit jaar vijf cruiseaanlopen ontvangen. Gezien de omstandigheden met COIVD-19 is dat geen slecht aantal. Er werden eerst nog enkele extra aanlopen verwacht maar die werden al snel opnieuw geannuleerd door de rederijen vanwege de steeds veranderende situatie. Het kan nog steeds zijn dat er aanlopen toegevoegd zullen worden voor 2021, al achten we die kans wel vrij klein.

EN: With the cruise call of MS Bolette on 5 and 6 November, the short cruise season of 2021 has ended. Antwerp received a total of five cruise calls this year. Given the circumstances with COIVD-19 that is not a bad number. Initially, a few extra calls were expected, but these were soon cancelled again by the cruise lines due to the ever-changing situation. It is still possible that calls will be added for 2021, although we consider this probability to be rather low.

NL: MS Bolette was het eerste cruiseschip dat aanmeerde in Antwerpen sinds de officiële opening van Het Steen als toeristisch centrum. Toch was het nog niet mogelijk om de cruiseterminal te gebruiken omdat de verbinding tussen het terminalgebouw en het cruiseponton nog volop afgewerkt wordt. Van zodra dat in orde is kunnen de passagiers ook in stijl ontvangen worden in het middeleeuwse fort.

Voor de fotografen was het wel al mogelijk om voor de eerste keer een cruiseschip te fotograferen vanuit de nieuwe uitkijktoren van Het Steen. Van daaruit krijg je een knap zicht over het volledige cruiseponton.

EN: MS Bolette was the first cruise ship to berth in Antwerp since the official opening of Het Steen as a tourist centre. However, it was not yet possible to use the cruise terminal because the connection between the terminal building and the cruise pontoon is still being finished. As soon as that is in order, the passengers can be received in style in the medieval fortress.

For the photographers though, it was possible to photograph a cruise ship for the first time from the new observation tower at Het Steen. From there, you get a great view of the entire cruise pontoon.

Na 20 jaar opnieuw in Antwerpen / Na 20 jaar opnieuw in Antwerpen

NL: Het mag dan wel de allereerst aanloop zijn van het schip als ‘MS Bolette’, toch is het niet de alleerste keer dat het schip in Antwerpen te zien is. In 2001 lag het schip al twee keer aangemeerd in Antwerpen als MS Amsterdam van Holland America Line.

In 2020 kocht Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines het schip nadat de Carnival Corp., het moederbedrijf van Holland America Line, door de coronapandemie versneld afscheid nam van maar liefst 19 cruiseschepen. Ook haar zusterschip MS Rotterdam werd gekocht door Fred. Olsen. Dat schip kreeg de naam Borealis.

Het ziet ernaar uit dat MS Bolette ook het cruiseseizoen van 2022 zal mogen openen.

EN: It may be the first call of the ship as 'MS Bolette', but it is not the first time the ship has been seen in Antwerp. In 2001, the ship was already docked in Antwerp twice as Holland America Line's MS Amsterdam.

In 2020, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines bought the ship after Carnival Corp., Holland America Line's parent company, accelerated the departure of no less than 19 cruise ships due to the corona pandemic. Her sister ship MS Rotterdam was also bought by Fred. Olsen. That ship was named Borealis.

Het Steen opent de deuren als nieuw toeristisch Centrum van Antwerpen / Het Steen opens its doors as Antwerp’s new tourism center

NL: Na een grondige restauratie opent Het Steen de poorten voor het grote publiek op vrijdag 22 oktober 2021. Als toeristisch onthaalcentrum is het de ideale startplaats om Antwerpen te ontdekken. Het oudste bewaarde gebouw van Antwerpen herbergt een bezoekerscentrum, een nieuwe cruiseterminal, panoramisch dakterras en het belevingsparcours The Antwerp Story.

EN: After a thorough restoration, Het Steen opens its doors to the general public on Friday 22 October 2021. As a tourist reception centre, it is the ideal starting point for discovering Antwerp. The oldest preserved building in Antwerp houses a visitor centre, a new cruise terminal, panoramic roof terrace and the experience trail The Antwerp Story.

NL: Het Steen kende de voorbije 800 jaar veel functies: van burcht tot gevangenis en van tehuis tot museum. Koen Kennis, schepen voor toerisme: “Sinds 2008 bleef het gesloten voor het brede publiek, waardoor een hele generatie Antwerpenaren opgroeide zonder het oudste gebouw van de stad ooit te hebben betreden. Ik heb dat altijd erg jammer gevonden. Met deze restauratie krijgen de Sinjoren ‘hun’ Steen nu terug, en bovendien zwaaien de poorten ook open voor bezoekers aan de stad. Het Steen maakte immers zoveel mee dat het de perfecte plek is om het verhaal van de stad te vertellen.”

EN: Het Steen has had many functions over the past 800 years: from fortress to prison and from home to museum. Koen Kennis, alderman for tourism: "Since 2008, it has remained closed to the general public, causing a whole generation of Antwerp citizens to grow up without ever having entered the city's oldest building. I have always found that a great pity. With this restoration, the ‘Sinjoren’ will now get 'their' Steen back, and moreover, the gates will swing open for visitors to the city. After all, the Steen has been through so much that it is the perfect place to tell the city's story."

Het toeristisch centrum / All things tourism

NL: In het vernieuwde Steen is alles wat met toerisme in Antwerpen te maken heeft gecentraliseerd. Zo verhuisde de toeristische dienst en de stadswinkel van de Grote Markt naar het middeleeuwse fort. Er werd ook een belevingsparcours gecreëerd met de naam The Antwerp Story. Tijdens dit interactieve parcours kom je in een notendop te weten wat Antwerpen zo speciaal maakt. Hiervoor wordt onder meer gebruik gemaakt van de laatste technologieën om zowel de geschiedenis als het heden tot leven te laten komen.

EN: In the renovated Steen, everything to do with tourism in Antwerp is centralised. The tourist information centre and the city shop have moved from the Grote Markt to the medieval fortress. An experience trail called The Antwerp Story has also been created. During this interactive route you will find out in a nutshell what makes Antwerp so special. The latest technologies are used to bring both history and the present to life.

Cruise Terminal

NL: Onderaan in het gebouw, op het niveau van de kaai, werd er een nieuwe cruiseterminal gecreëerd. De passagiers zullen ontvangen worden in een ruime hal waar plaats is voor 400 personen. Er werd ook een aparte ruimte voorzien om de security-check te doen. Het geheel zal uiteindelijk naadloos aansluiten op het nieuwe cruiseponton. Momenteel wordt er nog de laatste hand gelegd aan de kaaien tussen de cruiseterminal en het ponton.

EN: In the lower half of the building, on the level of the quay, a new cruise terminal was created. Passengers will be welcomed in a spacious hall with room for 400 people. There is also a separate area for the security check. The whole space will eventually connect seamlessly to the new cruise pontoon. Currently, the finishing touches are being added to the quay between the cruise terminal and the pontoon.

Uitkijktoren / Observation tower

NL: De nieuwe aanbouw van Het Steen bevat ook een gloednieuwe uitkijktoren. De toren zal, op slechts enkele dagen na, het volledige jaar door gratis te bezoeken zijn tussen 10:00 en 22:00u. Vanop het hoogste punt krijg je een prachtig uitzicht over de Schelde. Ook wanneer er een cruiseschip aangemeerd ligt aan het cruiseponton zal dat vanop de toren heel goed te zien zijn. Naast de toren bevindt zich ook nog een dakterras dat vrij toegankelijk is.

EN: The new extension to Het Steen also includes a brand new observation tower. Apart from a few single days, the tower can be visited free of charge throughout the year between 10:00 and 22:00. From the highest point, you will have a magnificent view over the river Scheldt. When a cruise ship is moored at the cruise pontoon, this will be clearly visible from the tower. Next to the tower is a roof terrace that is freely accessible.
