MS Europa in Antwerpen - 1ste Aanloop aan Cruiseponton / 1st Cruise Call at Cruise Pontoon

NL: Het luxecruiseschip MS Europa van de Duitse rederij Hapag-Lloyd Cruises bracht op dinsdag 17 augustus 2021 opnieuw een bezoek aan Antwerpen. Het was het eerste zeecruiseschip dat na de corona-pauze in de Scheldestad aanmeerde, maar ook het eerste zeecruiseschip dat aanmeerde aan het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.

EN: The luxury cruise ship MS Europa of the German cruise line Hapag-Lloyd Cruises paid another visit to Antwerp on Tuesday, 17 August 2021. It was the first sea cruise ship to dock in the city of Antwerp after the corona break, but also the first sea cruise ship to dock at the new cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.

NL: Na anderhalf jaar mocht Antwerpen op 17 augustus opnieuw een zeecruiseschip ontvangen. Het 5+ sterrenschip MS Europa van Hapag-Lloyd Cruises had de eer om als eerste schip terug te komen naar de stad. Sinds midden juli is hun voltallige vloot opnieuw in de vaart. MS Europa was daarbij het laatste schip dat opnieuw in zee stak.

EN: NL: On August 17th, after one and a half years, Antwerp was able to welcome another sea cruise ship. The 5+ star ship MS Europa of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises had the honour to be the first ship to return to the city. Since mid-July, their entire fleet has been back in service. MS Europa was the last ship to take to the sea again.

Cruiseponton / Cruise Pontoon

NL: Wat de cruiseaanloop nog uniek maakt, is dat MS Europa als eerste zeecruiseschip gebruik gemaakt heeft van het nieuwe cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras. Voorheen meerden er enkel kleinere schepen aan zoals het Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży en het schoolschip Horyzont II in het voorjaar.

Op het nieuwe cruiseponton wordt geen gebruik meer gemaakt van een mobiele gangway of loopbrug zoals dat aan het Zuiderterras het geval was. Omdat het volledige ponton meebeweegt met de getijden is er geen vraag meer naar een gangway die zichzelf daaraan aanpast. Vanaf nu gebruiken de schepen hun eigen gangway die ze standaard allemaal aan boord hebben.

Ondanks de werken aan de kaaien en Het Steen werd er door Hapag-Lloyd Cruises voor gekozen om aan te meren aan het cruiseponton. Momenteel kunnen de cruiseschepen nog steeds aanmeren aan het Zuiderterras mochten ze dat willen. Vanaf midden oktober, wanneer Het Steen zal openen als het toeristische onthaal van Antwerpen, zullen de cruiseschepen standaard aanmeren aan het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras.

EN: What makes the cruise call even more unique is that MS Europa was the first sea cruise ship to use the new cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras. Previously, only smaller ships moored there, such as the Tall Ship Dar Młodzieży and the school ship Horyzont II in the spring.

On the new cruise pontoon, no mobile gangway is used as was the case on the Zuiderterras. Because the entire pontoon moves with the tides, there is no longer any demand for a gangway that adjusts itself accordingly. From now on, the ships will use their own gangway, which they all have on board as standard.

Despite the works on the quays and the fortress Het Steen, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises opted to dock at the cruise pontoon. At the moment, the cruise ships can still dock at the Zuiderterras if they wish. As from mid-October, when Het Steen will open as the tourist reception of Antwerp, the cruise ships will automatically dock at the cruise pontoon at the Noorderterras.

Drenkeling op Zee / Man overboard at Sea

NL: De cruiseaanloop werd spijtig genoeg overschaduwd door een spijtig voorval. In de vroege namiddag op 16 augustus werd er een reddingsactie opgestart omdat er op MS Europa een man overboord geslagen was. Het schip was op dat moment onderweg van de Duitse stad Hamburg richting Antwerpen en bevond zich niet ver van het Nederlandse Waddeneiland Texel.

Het bleek te gaan om man van in de 80 die om een nog onbekende reden van één van de bovendekken van het schip in het water was gevallen. Er werd meteen een grote zoekactie opgestart met vijf reddingboten, twee helikopters, een vliegtuig, een schip van de Kustwacht en nog enkele andere schepen die in de buurt waren. Door de hoge golven van 5 tot 6 meter was het echter zeer moeilijk om te zoeken. Na een aantal uur werd de zoekactie stopgezet omdat de overlevingskans van de man volgens de Kustwacht nihil geworden was.

EN: The cruise call was overshadowed by an unfortunate incident. In the early afternoon of August 16th, a rescue operation was launched because a man had fallen overboard on MS Europa. At that moment, the ship was en route from the German city of Hamburg to Antwerp and was not far from the Dutch Wadden Island of Texel.

It turned out to be an 80 year old man who had fallen into the water from one of the upper decks of the ship for an unknown reason. A major search operation was immediately launched with five lifeboats, two helicopters, an aeroplane, a Coastguard vessel and several other vessels in the vicinity. However, the high waves of 5 to 6 metres made the search very difficult. After several hours, the search was stopped because the chances of survival of the man had become zero according to the Coast Guard.

Volgende Cruiseaanloop? / Next Cruise Call?

NL: Momenteel staan er nog steeds een aantal cruiseaanlopen in Antwerpen gepland voor 2021. Het zal enkel nog afwachten worden of ze ook daadwerkelijk zullen plaatsvinden, want de cruiserederijen moet nog regelmatig hun vaarschema volledig omgooien door de constant veranderende regels omtrent corona.

Als alles goed gaat zal MS Amera van Phoenix Reisen op 23 september een bezoek brengen aan Antwerpen. Voor de laatste info over de cruiseaanlopen vragen we u om onze website in het oog te houden.

EN: At the moment, there are still a number of planned cruise calls for 2021. We will just have to wait and see if they will actually take place, as cruise companies still have to completely rearrange their sailing schedule regularly due to the constantly changing rules regarding corona.

MS Seaventure’s nieuwe livrei / MS Seaventure’s new livery

NL: MS Seaventure, het nieuwste cruiseschip van de Zwitserse rederij Scylla Ocean, straalt in haar nieuwe kleuren. Tijdens een droogdokperiode bij EDR Antwerp Shipyard werd het schip beschilderd in de huisstijl van de Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises die het schip chartert.

EN: MS Seaventure, the newest cruise ship of the Swiss cruise line Scylla Ocean, shines in her new colours. During a dry-docking period at EDR Antwerp Shipyard, the ship was painted in the house style of the German shipping company VIVA Cruises, which charters the ship.

NL: Het expeditiecruiseschip MS SEAVENTURE lag van 26 april tot en met 5 mei in het droogdok bij EDR Antwerp Shipyard. Daar kreeg het schip zowel boven als onder de waterlijn een groot onderhoud en kreeg het ook een nieuwe laag verf.

Na 10 dagen in het droogdok kreeg MS SEAVENTURE terug water onder haar kiel. Terwijl de romp van het schip voorheen bijna volledig wit was is de onderkant van de romp nu lichtblauw geschilderd in de huiskleuren van de Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises, waarvoor het schip binnenkort in zee zal steken. In het droogdok verscheen ook de naam ‘SEAVENTURE’ in reliëf op de boeg.

EN: The expedition cruise ship MS SEAVENTURE was in dry dock at EDR Antwerp Shipyard from 26 April to 5 May. There the ship received major maintenance above and below the waterline and was also given a new layer of paint.

After 10 days in dry-dock, MS SEAVENTURE got water under her keel again. While the hull of the ship was almost completely white before, the bottom of the hull is now painted light blue in the house colours of the German cruise line VIVA Cruises, for which the ship will soon start cruising. In the dry dock, the name 'SEAVENTURE' also appeared in relief on the bow.  

NL: Het schip ligt nu terug in het water aan de kaai in één van de dokken van EDR Antwerp Shipyard. Hier wordt nog de laatste hand gelegd aan MS SEAVENTURE om haar klaar te stomen voor haar eerste gasten. De eerste reis, of maiden voyage, staat gepland om op 18 juni 2021 te vertrekken vanuit Bremerhaven in Duitsland. De 16-daagse cruise zal de passagiers doorheen heel Noorwegen en Spitsbergen voeren.

EN: The ship is now back in the water at the quay in one of the docks of EDR Antwerp Shipyard. Here the finishing touches are being put on MS SEAVENTURE to get her ready for her first guests. The maiden voyage is scheduled to depart from Bremerhaven in Germany on June 18, 2021. The 16-day cruise will take passengers all throughout Norway and Spitsbergen.

MS SEAVENTURE in Droogdok / Dry Dock

NL: MS SEAVENTURE, het nieuwste cruiseschip van de Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises, ging op maandag 26 april in het droogdok voor onderhoud en schilderwerken. Binnen 10 à 12 dagen zal het schip stralen in de huiskleuren van VIVA Cruises.

EN: MS SEAVENTURE, the newest cruise ship of the German shipping company VIVA Cruises. went into dry dock on Monday 26 April for maintenance and painting work. Within 10 to 12 days, the ship will shine in the house colours of VIVA Cruises.

NL: Het expeditiecruiseschip MS SEAVENTURE ligt, zoals we hier eerder berichtte, sinds 16 januari 2021 aangemeerd bij de scheepswerf EDR Antwerp Ship Repair. Daar werden de voorbije maanden, onder toezicht van de Zwitserse cruise rederij Scylla Ocean, talrijke vernieuwingen doorgevoerd binnenin het schip. Zo kregen verschillende delen van het schip ondertussen een nieuwe bekleding.

EN: As we reported here earlier, the expedition cruise ship MS SEAVENTURE has been docked at EDR Antwerp Ship Repair since 16 January 2021. In the past few months, under the supervision of the Swiss cruise line Scylla Ocean, numerous renovations have been carried out inside the ship. For example, various parts of the ship have been refurbished.

NL: Op maandag 26 april gingen de werken aan het schip de tweede fase in. MS SEAVENTURE werd verplaatst naar één van de droogdokken op het werfterrein en het schip werd meteen uit het water gehaald. Nu het schip volledig droog staat kan er begonnen worden aan het onderhoud van de romp en de propellers. Na het algemene onderhoud zal alles onder de waterlijn een nieuwe verflaag krijgen.

Ook boven de waterlijn zijn er aan de buitenkant van het schip nog aanpassingen gepland. MS SEAVENTURE is momenteel gehuld in witte doeken om tijdens het spuiten van de verf geen overspray te hebben. Binnen enkele dagen zal men namelijk beginnen met de romp te beschilderen in de huisstijl van VIVA Cruises, zijnde een blauwe romp met een witte bovenbouw. De schouw zal ook beschilderd worden in twee tinten blauw met een golfpatroon.

EN: On Monday 26 April, the works on the ship entered the second phase. MS SEAVENTURE was moved to one of the dry docks at the shipyard and the ship was immediately taken out of the water. Now that the ship is laying completely dry, maintenance of the hull and propellers can begin. After the general maintenance, everything below the waterline will get a new layer of paint.

Above the waterline, adjustments to the outside of the ship are also planned. MS SEAVENTURE is currently covered in white tarps to avoid overspray during the painting process. In a few days, they will start painting the hull in the house style of VIVA Cruises, being a blue hull and white upperstructure. The funnel will also be painted in two shades of blue with a wave pattern.

Cruiseschip MS Seaventure at EDR Antwerp Shipyard

NL: Bij de scheepswerf EDR Antwerp Shipyard in de haven van Antwerpen ligt momenteel het expeditiecruiseschip MS Seaventure aangemeerd. Het schip wordt daar verder afgewerkt en klaargestoomd voor haar eerste cruiseseizoen voor de nieuwe eigenaar VIVA Cruises Ltd.

EN: The expedition cruise ship MS Seaventure is currently docked at the shipyard EDR Antwerp Shipyard in the port of Antwerp. The ship is being finished there and will be prepared for her first cruise season for the new owner VIVA Cruises Ltd.

NL: Het kleine expeditiecruiseschip MS Seaventure voer op zaterdag 16 januari tijdens hevige sneeuwbuien de Westerschelde op. Het was omwille van corona bijna een jaar geleden dat er nog eens een zeecruiseschip koers zette naar Antwerpen. Tegen de avond kwam het schip via de Berendrechtsluis aan bij de scheepswerf van EDR Antwerp Shipyard.

NL: MS Seaventure kwam rechtstreeks van de kleine Deense haven Hundested. Daar lag het schip al enkele maanden aan de kaai voor werken, maar door de slechte bereikbaarheid werd ervoor gekozen om richting Antwerpen te varen. “In de afgelopen jaren heeft Scylla verschillende dockingen en reparaties laten uitvoeren voor hun riviercruiseschepen bij EDR Antwerp Shipyard waarvan we zeer tevreden waren. Daarom werd besloten om ook MS Seaventure naar Antwerpen te sturen. De centrale ligging van de haven van Antwerpen is daarbij zeker ook een pluspunt.”, liet Bart Vos van RSR Shipping weten.

EN: The small expedition cruise ship MS Seaventure sailed onto the Westerscheldt on Saturday 16 January during heavy snowfall. Because of corona, it had been almost a year since a sea cruise ship set course for Antwerp. In the evening the vessel arrived at EDR Antwerp Shipyard via the Berendrechtlock.

EN: MS Seaventure arrived directly from the small Danish port of Hundested. There the ship had been moored for several months for works, but due to the poor accessibility it was chosen to sail to Antwerp. "In recent years, Scylla has had several dockings and repair operations for their river cruise ships carried out at EDR Antwerp Shipyard with which we were very satisfied. It was therefore decided to also send MS Seaventure to Antwerp. The central location of the port of Antwerp is certainly also a plus", said Bart Vos of RSR Shipping.

Nieuwe naam en schildering / New name and livery

NL: Het schip droeg tot oktober 2020 de naam MS Bremen en maakte deel uit van de vloot van Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. Onder die naam was het schip ook drie keer te gast in Antwerpen. Begin 2019 werd bekend gemaakt dat het schip de vloot zou verlaten. De Zwitserse rederij Scylla, die tot dan toe enkel riviercruiseschepen onder haar naam had, kocht het schip en veranderde de naam in MS Seaventure. “Door een nieuw segment van de cruisemarkt aan te spreken spreidt Scylla de risico’s. Daarbij kwam ook dat verschillende touroperators, waarmee we een goede band opgebouwd hebben, ook vragende partij waren voor de komst van een expeditiecruiseschip.”, aldus Bart Vos.

Normaal gezien zou Scylla het schip pas overnemen in de lente van 2021, maar doordat er door het coronavirus geen cruises meer gevaren konden worden, heeft Hapag-Lloyd Cruises besloten om het schip al in oktober aan Scylla over te dragen. MS Seaventure zal nu bij EDR Antwerp Shipyard verder klaargemaakt worden voor haar eerste cruiseseizoen. Momenteel ligt het schip nog gewoon aan de kade in de werf, maar binnenkort zal het schip het droogdok ingaan. Daar zal een volledig nazicht gebeuren van de romp en schroeven en zal MS Seaventure ook in de huiskleuren van VIVA Cruises Ltd. geschilderd worden.

EN: The ship was named MS Bremen until October 2020 and was part of the fleet of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. Under that name, the ship also visited Antwerp three times. In early 2019, it was announced that the ship would be leaving the fleet. The Swiss shipping company Scylla, which until then had only river cruise ships under its name, bought the ship and changed the name to MS Seaventure. "By addressing a new segment of the cruise market, Scylla spreads the risks. In addition, several tour operators, with whom we have built up good relations, were also asking for the addition of an expedition cruise ship", says Bart Vos.

Normally, Scylla would only take over the ship in the spring of 2021, but due to the fact that no more cruises could be sailed due to the coronavirus, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises decided to hand over the ship to Scylla already in October. MS Seaventure will now be further prepared for her first cruise season at EDR Antwerp Shipyard. At the moment, the ship is still moored at the quay in the shipyard, but soon she will enter dry dock. There, the hull and propellers will be overhauled and MS Seaventure will be painted in the house livery of VIVA Cruises Ltd.

NL: De Duitse rederij VIVA Cruises Ltd. heeft het schip gecharterd en zal het inzetten als expeditiecruiseschip. Er worden cruises gepland naar IJsland, Groenland en Antarctica. Doordat het schip een versterkte romp heeft kan het zonder problemen in deze uitdagende wateren varen. Tijdens een cruise langs West-Europa zal MS Seaventure op 11 mei 2021 voor de eerste keer met passagiers naar Antwerpen komen. Het schip zal dan gebruik kunnen maken van het splinternieuwe cruiseponton en de nieuwe cruiseterminal aan Het Steen.

EN: The German shipping company VIVA Cruises Ltd. has chartered the ship and will deploy it as an expedition cruise ship. Cruises are planned to visit Iceland, Greenland and Antarctica. Because the ship has a reinforced hull, it can sail in these challenging waters without any problems. During a cruise along Western Europe, MS Seaventure will bring passengers to Antwerp for the first time on 11 May 2021. The ship will then be able to use the brand new cruise pontoon and the new cruise terminal at Het Steen.

Grootste hospitaalschip ter wereld wordt afgewerkt in Antwerpen / The world's largest hospital ship will be outfitted in Antwerp

NL: In het voorjaar van 2021 zal het schip MS Global Mercy in Antwerpen ingericht en afgewerkt worden tot het grootste private ziekenhuisschip ter wereld. Daarover hebben Port of Antwerp en hulporganisatie Mercy Ships overeenstemming bereikt. Het schip zal kosteloos gedurende meer dan 3 maanden in de haven van Antwerpen kunnen liggen voor deze werken. Tientallen Belgische bedrijven en organisaties zullen meewerken aan het project. De bouw van de Global Mercy maakt vanaf eind 2021 een verdubbeling van de medische hulp mogelijk in de allerarmste landen van Afrika.

EN: In the spring of 2021 the ship MS Global Mercy will be converted and finished into the largest private hospital ship in the world in Antwerp. Port of Antwerp and the aid organisation Mercy Ships have reached agreement on this. The vessel will be able to lie in the port of Antwerp for more than 3 months free of charge for these works. Dozens of Belgian companies and organisations will participate in the project. The construction of the Global Mercy will enable a doubling of medical aid in the poorest countries of Africa from the end of 2021.

NL: De Global Mercy ligt momenteel nog in China waar het wordt gebouwd door de China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) in de scheepswerf van Tianjin Xingang. Het schip is 174 meter lang, 28 meter breed, telt 12 verdiepingen en is 37.000 BRT groot.

De komende weken staan nog enkele testvaarten gepland. Daarna wordt het klaargemaakt voor vertrek naar Antwerpen. In de haven van Antwerpen zal het grootste ziekenhuisschip ter wereld, met 200 bedden en 6 volwaardige operatiekwartieren, verder ingericht en afgewerkt worden.

Bert van Dijk, voorzitter van Mercy Ships: “De afwerking van de Global Mercy omvat de installatie van systemen en medische apparatuur die samen met de 650 vrijwilligers het kloppend hart gaan vormen van dit uitzonderlijke ziekenhuisschip. Hiermee zullen we dubbel zoveel mensenlevens kunnen redden als vandaag het geval is, en dat voor de komende 50 jaar”.

EN: The Global Mercy is currently still in China where it is being built by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) at the Tianjin Xingang shipyard. The ship is 174 metres long, 28 metres wide, has 12 floors and is 37,000 GRT in size.

More sea trials are planned in the coming weeks. The ship will then be prepared for departure to Antwerp. In the port of Antwerp, the largest hospital ship in the world, with 200 beds and 6 fully-fledged operating quarters, will be further fitted out and completed.

Bert van Dijk, chairman of Mercy Ships: "The finishing touches to the Global Mercy include the installation of systems and medical equipment which, together with the 650 volunteers, will form the beating heart of this exceptional hospital ship. This will enable us to save twice as many lives as today, and that for the next 50 years".

NL: Mercy Ships gaf er de voorkeur aan om het schip in te richten in de haven van Antwerpen vanwege de flexibiliteit, de aantrekkelijke voorwaarden en de locatie, maar ook vanwege het grote enthousiasme van betrouwbare partners en de hoge mate van professionaliteit en kennis van Afrika, waar het schip zal worden ingezet. In Antwerpen zijn intussen de voorbereidingen gestart om het schip te ontvangen. Er is een plaats gereserveerd aan het Nautisch Operationeel Centrum van Port of Antwerp. Veel bedrijven en organisaties hebben reeds hun medewerking met enthousiasme toegezegd.

“Met dit project willen we ook het maatschappelijke engagement van de haven onderstrepen”, zegt Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO van Port of Antwerp. “Tientallen bedrijven, binnen en buiten de haven, hebben al laten weten dat ze willen meewerken aan dit unieke project. Op die manier leveren we samen ook een mooie bijdrage aan de bevolking van Afrika waarmee de haven een sterke band heeft”.

Het schip zal 10 maanden per jaar in een Afrikaanse haven aanmeren om er mensen de levensnoodzakelijke medische zorg te verlenen die ze daar missen. Het zal ook als opleidings- en trainingscentrum dienen voor plaatselijke gezondheidswerkers.

EN: Mercy Ships preferred to set up the vessel in the port of Antwerp because of its flexibility, attractive conditions and location, but also because of the great enthusiasm of reliable partners and the high level of professionalism and knowledge of Africa, where the vessel will be deployed. In the meantime, preparations have started in Antwerp to receive the ship. A place has been reserved at the Nautical Operational Centre of Port of Antwerp. Many companies and organisations have already enthusiastically pledged their cooperation.

"With this project we also want to underline the social commitment of the port," says Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of Antwerp. "Dozens of companies, both inside and outside the port, have already expressed their willingness to participate in this unique project. In this way, together we are also making a great contribution to the people of Africa with whom the port has a strong bond".

The ship will dock in an African port for 10 months a year to provide people with the vital medical care they need there. It will also serve as an education and training centre for local health workers.

NL: Het jaar 2020 had een recordjaar geweest moeten zijn qua cruiseaanlopen en passagiersaantallen. Spijtig genoeg dacht het coronavirus daar anders over. In totaal kwamen er uiteindelijk maar twee zeecruiseschepen langs. Ook voor 2021 wordt het afwachten welke schepen werkelijk zullen komen.

EN: The year 2020 should have been a record year in terms of cruise calls and passenger numbers. Unfortunately, the corona virus took a different view. In total, only two sea cruise ships passed in the end. For 2021, too, it remains to be seen which ships will actually arrive.

NL: Met maarliefst 41 zeecruiseaanlopen zou 2020 het recordseizoen van Antwerpen in 2001 evenaren. Qua passagiersaantallen ging er zelfs ruimschoots een nieuw record gevestigd worden met maarliefst 42.000 zeecruisepassagiers. Het coronavirus zorgde er echter voor dat de volledige cruise-industrie vanaf maart wereldwijd stil viel. Alle aanlopen werden stelselmatig geannuleerd wanneer duidelijk werd dat dit probleem voor langere tijd zou aanhouden.

De enige cruiseschepen die in 2020 naar Antwerpen kwamen waren MS AIDAcara van AIDA Cruises en MS Black Watch van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in februari. In totaal brachten ze 2078 passagiers naar de stad. Ondertussen werd MS Black Watch verkocht en vervangen door MS Rotterdam van Holland America Line. MS Black Watch ligt nu in de buurt van Istanboel in Turkije waar ze gebruikt gaat worden als drijvend hotel. Ook de toekomst van MS AIDAcara is onzeker. AIDA Cruises liet recent weten dat ze eventueel één of meerde schepen zouden verkopen.

Rond de zomer waagden sommige rederijen zich aan een voorzichtige heropstart van hun cruises. Ponant en Hapag-Lloyd Cruises staken terug in zee met zeer strenge hygiëneregels. Die laatste had ook de intentie om nog drie aanlopen te doen in Antwerpen in oktober. Spijtig genoeg vielen die samen met de tweede besmettingsgolf waardoor de aanvragen geweigerd werden.

EN: With no fewer than 41 sea cruise runs, 2020 would equal Antwerp's record season of 2001. In terms of passenger numbers, a new record would have been set with no less than 42,000 sea cruise passengers. However, the corona virus caused the entire cruise industry to grind to a halt worldwide from March onwards. All calls were systematically cancelled when it became clear that the problem would persist for an extended period of time.

The only cruise ships coming to Antwerp in 2020 were MS AIDAcara from AIDA Cruises and MS Black Watch of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines in February. They brought a total of 2078 passengers to the city. A few months later, MS Black Watch was sold and replaced by MS Rotterdam of Holland America Line. MS Black Watch is now located near Istanbul in Turkey where it will be used as a floating hotel. Also the future of MS AIDAcara is uncertain as AIDA Cruises recently announced that they might sell one or more ships.

Around the summer some cruise lines dared to carefully restart their cruises. Ponant and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises returned to sea with very strict hygiene rules. The latter also intended to make three more calls at Antwerp in October. Unfortunately, these coincided with the second wave of infections, after which the applications were refused.

Vooruitblik naar 2021 / Outlook for 2021

NL: Momenteel ziet het zeecruiseseizoen voor 2021 er nog veel belovend uit. Er zouden 6 schepen voor de eerste keer naar de stad komen, waaronder ook de Sea Cloud Spirit, een splinternieuw zeilcruiseschip. Het nieuwe schip van Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, MS Bolette, zou ook enkele keren te zien moeten zijn in Antwerpen.

Het is wel nog afwachten welke schepen ook echt zullen langskomen. Tot vorige week stonden er nog 30 zeecruiseaanlopen gepland, maar dat is nu al teruggevallen op 26 omdat Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines hun vaarpauze opnieuw verlengd heeft tot het voorjaar van 2021. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk zullen ook nog andere rederijen deze beslissing volgen.

Wat wel zeker is, is dat de schepen in 2021 ontvangen zullen worden aan de nieuwe cruiseterminal in Het Steen. De schepen zullen vanaf dan aanmeren aan het cruiseponton aan het Noorderterras. EN: At the moment, the sea cruise season for 2021 still looks promising. There should be 6 ships coming to the city for the first time, including the Sea Cloud Spirit, a brand new sailing cruise ship. The new ship of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, MS Bolette, should also be seen a few times in Antwerp.

It remains to be seen which ships will actually visit. Until last week, 30 sea cruise calls were planned, but that number has already dropped to 26 because Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has extended their sailing break again until spring 2021. It is highly likely that other cruise lines will follow this decision.

What is certain is that the ships will be received at the new cruise terminal in the medieval fortress  ‘Het Steen’ in 2021.
