Op 17 december lag het laatste cruiseschip voor 2012 in Antwerpen aangemeerd: de Marco Polo, zoals te zien op de onderstaande foto's. Dit schip is al een vast gegeven geworden sinds de eerste call in 2010. Het schip kwam langs voor een bezoek aan onze kerstmarkt. Elk jaar meren er cruiseschepen aan in Antwerpen tijdens de kerstperiode. Hun cruise voert dan langs de verschillende kerstmarkten van West-Europa.
Eindbalans:
Als we terugkijken op het voorbije cruiseseizoen kunnen we zeggen dat 2012 een goed jaar was. Er waren 25 calls en spijtig genoeg drie annulaties: Wind Surf (door slecht weer op zee), Bremen (door beschadigingen aan een propeller) en de Sorolla.
Deze laatste was in 2012 als eens verschoven. Normaal gezien stond de aanloop gepland voor mei, maar dit werd toen gewijzigd naar november. In oktober werd dan door Cruise Port Antwerp gemeld dat ook dit niet zou doorgaan. De call wordt verschoven naar ergens in 2013. Een exacte datum hebben we nog niet.
Dit jaar vonden er enkele zeer opmerkelijke gebeurtenissen plaats aan de Scheldekaaien. Als eerste opende de AIDAluna het cruiseseizoen. Zes weken lang konden we het schip verwelkomen in onze stad waarna het voor de laatste keer zijn lijn losgooide. Op zich is dit niet zo speciaal, maar in dit geval wel omdat de AIDAluna het laatste schip van AIDA Cruises was dat naar Antwerpen kwam. Volgende jaren gaan de schepen, zoals u denkelijk al wel weet, naar de haven van Zeebrugge. Als tweede kwamen er twee schepen van Phoenix Reisen naar Antwerpen, namelijk de Albatros en Amadea. Deze nieuwe rederij is goed nieuws voor Antwerpen. In 2013 komen de twee schepen ook terug.
De Wind Surf was zeker en vast de blikvanger voor dit jaar als men kijkt naar het concept. Dit 162 meter lang schip is een kruising tussen een zeilschip en een cruiseschip. Tussen de 5 masten hangen etelijke vierkante meters zijl. Bij de afvaart hees het schip zijn zeilen wat zeer speciaal is want dit doen ze niet overal. Normaal gezien moest het schip nog een tweede call maken maar die werd afgelast door slecht weer op de Noordzee.
Dit jaar was de Wind Surf niet het enige cruiseschip met zeilen in Antwerpen. De Star Flyer maakte zich namelijk voor één dag vast aan de cruiseterminal. Deze gracieuze viermaster is een echt zeilschip. Geen entertainment aan boord, geen casino, ... Enkel rust en gezelligheid. Dankzij een uitnodiging van Schepen van Toerisme Philip Heylen was het mogelijk op dit prachtige schip te geraken. Foto's en info vindt u op de website en deze blog.
Een andere zeer belangrijke gebeurtenis dit jaar is de allereerste call van de MSC Lirica. Na enkele jaren te onderhandelen is het dan toch eindelijk gelukt om een schip van MSC Cruises naar Antwerpen te laten komen. Voor deze unieke gebeurtenis werd van het vertrek een enorm event gemaakt. Antwerpen had speciaal hiervoor een sleepboot afgehuurd om waterstralen in de lucht te spuiten tijdens het vertrek. Verder zijn er honderden blauwe en witte ballonnen opgelaten en werd er confetti in de lucht geschoten. Alles natuurlijk in de kleuren van MSC Cruises. Het bleek dat de kapitein en de bemanning van de MSC Lirica zeer tevreden waren over hun verblijf in onze stad want in plaats van de gebruikelijke drie hoornsalvo's weergalmden er bijna 20 over Antwerpen. Het schip heeft in oktober nog een tweede aanloop gedaan in onze stad. Toen was ons team uitgenodigd om de Lirica nu eens van binnen te bekijken. Volgend jaar staan er al 13 cruisecalls op de lijst. Dit is weinig in vergelijk met dit jaar maar er zit wel een zeer speciale en unieke call bij! Namelijk de splinternieuwe 'MS Europa 2' die op zijn Maiden Voyage naar Antwerpen komt. Meer info over het nieuwe cruiseseizoen komt er als de officiële lijst met aanlopen bekend is. Dit zal ergens in het voorjaar van 2013 zijn.
Voor dit jaar kunnen we zeker besluiten dat het een prachtig seizoen is geweest. Hopelijk is het mogelijk dezelfde, of zelfs nog betere, cijfers te behalen in komende jaren.

On the 17th of December the last cruise ship called at Antwerp for 2012. This year it was the Marco Polo as can be seen on the photos below. This ship is already well know in Antwerp as it has been several times in our citiy since its maiden call in 2010. The Marco Polo came to our city for a visit of the Christmas market. Every year there are special cruise calls calling at Antwerp specially for this market. Their cruise sails from one market to another at the coast of Western Europe.

When we look back at the season of 2012 we can say that it was a good cruise year. Antwerp had 25 and unfortunately 3 cancellations: Wind Surf (due to bad weather at sea), Bremen (due to a damaged propeller) and the Sorolla.
This last one has already been rescheduled
early this year. Normally the call was set for Mai, but this was changed to
November. In October Cruise Port Antwerp announced that the call would be
cancelled for 2012. The ship will now come somewhere in 2013., but an exact
date is not yet know.
This year a few great cruise events took place. In
March the AIDAluna opened the cruise season. Every week, and this six weeks
after another, the ship was docked in Antwerp. The AIDAluna was the last ship
of AIDA Cruises that docked in Antwerp. They will not return to Antwerp the
following years, but will call at Zeebrugge instead. A second important event
this year were the Phoenix Reisen-ships that made their maiden calls in our
city. The Amadea and Albatros will next year also return to Antwerp.
The Wind Surf was without any doubt the
headline of this year's cruise season. This 162 metres long cruise ship is a
crossing between a sailing ship and a cruise ship. Between its 5 masts enormous
sails ornament the ship. At the departure the ship set its sails, what is very
special because normally they sail out without sails. Normally the ship should
have made a second call but this was cancelled due to bad weather on the
Northsea.
But this year the Wind Surf was not the only cruise
ships with sails in Antwerp. Also the Star Flyer docked one day at the cruise
terminal. This gracious four-masted sailing ship has no entertainment or casino
onboard. I's the perfect ship for people who love a tranquil and cozy ship.
Thanks to an invitation of Alderman of Culture and Tourisme Philip Heylen it
was possible to visit this magnificent ship. Photos and info can be found on

Another very important event this year was
the maiden call of the MSC Lirica. Thanks
to long negotiations Antwerp finally succeeded in bringing MSC Cruises
to Antwerp. For the occasion Antwerp had chartered a tugboat to spray a water
curtain into the air. There were also hundreds of balloons launched and
confetti was shot into the air by cannons. And of course all this is the
colours of MSC Cruises. The captain and the crew of the MSC Lirica were very
pleased with their stay in Antwerp because instead of the normal 3 horn blasts almost
20 were fired across Antwerp. In October the ship was docked for the second
time in Antwerp. Our team was able to go onboard and take a look around this

For next
are at the moment cruisecalls planned
This is little compared with this years season but their will take place a very
special and unique call! The 'MS Europa 2' will call at Antwerp on its Maiden
Voyage. More info about the next cruise season will follow when the official
list with cruise calls is published. This will be in the early months of 2013.
For this
year we can conclude that it has been an amazing season. Hopefully this trend
will keep on going the following years.
